George C. Mitchell, 67, a long-time resident of Gillette, Wyoming, passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2002, at his home in Gillette after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. Graveside services and burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2002, at the Elks Cemetery in Sheridan, Wyoming. Kane Funeral Home of Sheridan will be in charge.
Mr. Mitchell was born May 17, 1934, in Miles City, Montana, to Earl and Imogene Mitchell. He attended schools in Wyoming and Montana, graduating from high school in 1952 at Custer, Montana. In his younger years, he worked for the Padlock Ranch and also the Earl Simpson ranches of Sheridan. In 1958, George married Christina Werner of Spotted Horse, Wyoming. They spent their early married life at Broadus, Montana, where he worked for A.J. Bone Trucking. They later moved to Tucson, Arizona, and he worked in the copper mines. In 1966, George transferred to the Anaconda Copper Mine at Butte, Montana. Then, in 1967, when the copper mine went on strike, he moved his family to Gillette, Wyoming. George worked for Stone Construction, Paul’s Truck and Tractor, and Bob Deaver Construction in Gillette. In 1974, he started working for Amax Coal Co. of Gillette, where he stayed until he retired in 1994. After retirement, George and Christina traveled extensively throughout the United States.
George enjoyed traveling, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, and going on vacations with his family. Also, his big highlight was watching his grandchildren in their sports events, skiing, and water skiing. George was a charter member of the Gillette Elks Lodge and later transferred his membership to the Sheridan Elks Lodge.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife Christina of Gillette, WY; his son George Mitchell of Gillette, WY; his daughter Lori Horsley of Gillette, WY; his daughter Kim Roderick of Bozeman, MT; his son Randy Reeves of Wright, WY; his daughter Diane Barbero of Boyes, MT; his fourteen grandchildren; his two great-grandchildren; his mother Imogene Mitchell of Sheridan, WY; and three brothers, Parke of Concord, CA, Dallas of Suisun, CA, and Carsie of Big Horn, MT. He was preceded in death by a son and his father.
A memorial has been established in his name to benefit the Northeast Wyoming Hospice, and donations may be sent to 400 S. Kendrick, Suite 301, P.O. Box 3259, Gillette, WY 82717-3259, or in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.
Gary Lee Morgan, 50, of Sheridan passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Morgan was born on August 21, 1951 in Rantoul, Illinois to Irvin and Willa M. (Walker) Morgan. Growing up, Gary enjoyed trains, swimming judo and playing basketball. As a result of his love of trains, Gary worked as a Railroad Engineer for Burlington Northern. In 1971 he joined the Air Force, served in Panama and had an honorable discharge in 1974.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother and is survived by his father, Irvin, step-mother, Ann Morgan of Aurora, Colorado and his aunt, Betty, her husband John and their son, John Brewer of Aurora, Colorado.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2002 at the V.A. Medical Center Chapel with Chaplain Wright officiating. Kane Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Doris Mussell, age 98, died March 13, 2002, of natural causes at Sugarland Ridge, where she had lived the last three years.
She was born on a ranch in Cherry County, Nebraska, in 1903 to Wallace and Stella Nelson, the third of five children. Her parents homesteaded in Francis, Saskatchewan, Canada, and both died when she was a child. Upon their death she was raised by her grandparents, Sarah and Edward Weed, in Independence, Missouri. Her grandfather, Edward, was a Civil War veteran. She graduated from William Chrissman High School in Independence, from Kansas City Business College in Kansas City, and from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. She worked as a secretary until 1937, when she married Lee O. Mussell in Des Moines, Iowa. She devoted the next twenty years to raising her three children.
She returned to full-time employment in 1957 occasioned by her husband’s illness, retiring in 1974 from her position as Departmental Administrator with the National Handcraft Institute of Des Moines, Iowa. Upon her retirement, she resided in Columbia and Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and finally in Sheridan, Wyoming. She was an active member of P.E.O.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her four siblings, Leah Nelson of Missouri, Wallace Nelson of California, Myra Harder of Maryland, and Marie Green of Arizona. Surviving family include Margaret Hansen of Clear Lake, Iowa, Dr. Howard Mussell of Sheridan, Wyoming, Frank Mussell of Portland, Oregon, and five grandchildren, Dr. Grant Piepergerdes of Liberty, Missouri, Dr. Amy Warren of Houston, Texas, Anne Means of Liberty, Missouri, and McKenzie Mussell and Channing Mussell of Portland, Oregon.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is planned in Independence, Missouri, with interment in the family plot in Mound Grove Cemetery, Independence, Missouri. A reception to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2002, between 1 and 3 p.m. at the Prairie Dog Women’s Club at Highway 14 and Meade Creek Road, Sheridan, Wyoming.

The family came to Wyoming when he was a young child. He grew up and graduated from high school in Evanston, WY. After high school, he served in the U.S. Navy. He married his wife Delores in 1961, in Craig, CO. He lived in Casper, WY, where he worked for a trucking company. He moved to St. George, UT, where he cooked at the Hilton Hotel until coming to Sheridan in 1998. He enjoyed reading and making things with his hands.
He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.

Rolinda Payne, 55, of Sheridan passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2002, at the V.A. Medical Center in Sheridan. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 14, 2002, at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Terral Bearden officiating. Interment will take place in Bozeman, Montana at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Anna Pilch, a life long Sheridan County resident, died Saturday, March 2, 2002.
She was born November 1, 1917, in Acme, WY, to Joseph & Mary (Mahalek) Seul.
She ranched for sixty-two years on Lower Prairie Dog Road. Her husband, Joe S. Pilch, preceded her in death in 1984.

Josephine Polito, 91 of Sheridan, WY died Sunday January 13, 2002 at Sheridan Manor.
Miss Polito was born December 2, 1910 to Bruno Leonard and Elizabeth (Varcelli) Polito in Cirella, Italy. She came to the United States when she was 10 years old and the family ranched at Decker, MT. She attended school at Kleenburn and graduated from Kleenburn School. Miss Polito moved to Sheridan in 1940 and went to work as a laundry worker for Superior Laundry. She retired from Superior Laundry in 1975.
In 1977 she returned to her hometown in Italy, to visit family and friends, and then went on to Sidney, Australia. This had been a dream of hers she never expected to accomplish. Miss Polito also was very supportive of all of her nieces and nephews.
Miss Polito was a member of Holy Name Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by four sisters; Rose Baker, Mary Bach, and Ellen Polito, all of Sheridan, and Lois Lewis of Hardin, MT, her nieces and nephews, and numerous grand nieces and nephews.
Vigil for Miss Polito will be 7:00PM Wednesday January 16, 2002 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Liturgy will be 10:00AM Thursday January 17, 2002 at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Robert Fox as celebrant. Burial will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
Memorials in memory of Miss Polito may be made to Holy Name Catholic Church or Holy Name School.
Sharon K. Race, 52, of Parkman, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2002, at her residence.
Sharon was born on June 2, 1949, to Orval and Mabel (Jackson) Denbo in Holyoke, Colorado, and was confirmed in the First Christian Church in Holyoke. She married her husband Ray E. Race on December 5, 1969, in Wray, Colorado, and the couple has lived in the Sheridan area for the past 24 years after moving from Holyoke, Colorado.
Sharon was a member of the Sheridan County Cattlewomen, the Girl Scouts, the Dayton Benefit Club, and First Christian Church. She was a licensed cosmetologist, and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, bird watching, cooking and baking. Caring for others was her life.
Sharon is survived by her husband Ray of Parkman; her two sons Edwin Race and wife Kellie of Holyoke, Colorado, and Eric Race and wife Justine of Gillette, Wyoming; her three grandchildren, Christopher S. Race, Jasmine C. Race and Victoria Jo Race; her parents, Orval and Mabel Denbo of Holyoke, Colorado ; her sister Diane Craven and husband Cody of Haxtun, Colorado; and her two brothers Gary Denbo and wife Lynn of Lamar, Nebraska, and Dan Denbo and wife Linda of Holyoke, Colorado.
Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2002, at the Ranchester Community Church with Pastor Dan Keller officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling the local arrangements.
The family has requested that memorials be made in Sharon’s name to the Sharon Race Memorial Fund in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.
Elmer W. Reisch, Sr., 91, passed away on Tuesday, February 19, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Mr. Reisch was born November 26, 1910, in Turtle Lake, Wisconsin, to John and Hazel (Brown) Reisch. His family later moved to Campbell County. After homesteading in Campbell County, he enlisted in the Army in 1941, and served in the European Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Elmer returned to Wyoming and worked for Bondi Construction, Holly Sugar, Allen Fordyce, and Ike Fordyce until his retirement. He was a professional sheep shearer during the shearing season, an occupation which he continued until he was 80 years old.
Mr. Reisch married Inez Baker in 1945. Following the loss of Inez, he married Rose Montegna in 1970. They have resided in Sheridan since that time. Mr. Reisch was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and Holy Name Catholic Church. He enjoyed trapping, gardening, carpentry, and working with 4-H members preparing sheep for county fairs.
Mr. Reisch was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Inez, and his brothers Jack and Marvin Reisch. He is survived by his wife Rose of Sheridan; his son Elmer “Sonny” Reisch, Jr. of Sheridan; his daughter Loree Price and husband Paul of Prescott, Washington; his four grandsons, Richard Price, David Price, Robert Price, and Amory Price; his three great-granddaughters, Brandi Price, Amanda Price, and Schantea’ Price; his two sisters, Norma Leis of Sheridan, and Lucille Shorten and husband Leon of Joliet, Montana; and his brother Floyd Reisch and wife Pearl of Anaconda, Montana.
An open visitation will be held between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 22, 2002, at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2002, at Holy Name Catholic Church with The Very Reverend Eugene Sullivan officiating. Interment will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with military honors. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
