Daniel Joseph Cavanaugh, 76, of 101 North 4th St., died Friday, July 25, at United Hospital Transitional Care Center, following an extended illness.
He was born Feb. 18, 1921, in Groton, Conn., a son of the late John Joseph Cavanaugh and Evelyn M. Holloway Cavanaugh.
Surviving are his wife, Leota Evelyn Burton Cavanaugh, Clarksburg; two brothers, John J. Cavanaugh, Lake Placid, Fla., George Cavanaugh, New London, Conn.; two sisters, Ruth Raines, Lighthouse Point, Fla., and Jane Wall, Waterford, Conn.
A World War II Army veteran, Cavanaugh also served as a combat medic with the Army's 34th Regiment of the 24th Division in the Korean War. Based in Japan on occupation duty, the division was rushed to Korea about a week after the war's outbreak.
The 34th Regiment suffered tremendous casualties in fighting, a delaying action against the invading North Koreans.
Several of his combat photos have appeared in military histories of the war. In his retirement, Cavanaugh worked to publicize the valor and sacrifices of Korean War veterans.
Mr. Cavanaugh was a member of the VFW Meuse Argonne Post No. 573.
He retired from the Army with 21 years of service. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal with silver star, Medical Badge, the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal with Germany and Japan clasps, and a Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Badge.
He also worked for the Federal Police force at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. until 1983.
Friends will be received from 1-3 p.m. today at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, where Catholic Burial Rites will be held at 9 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Father Peter Giannamore officiating. Interment will follow in the West Virginia National cemetery with military gravesite rites accorded.
PAUL M. COWGILL, JR.
Paul Miller Cowgill, Jr., 66, of Salem, died Thursday, July 24, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born July 10, 1931, in Weston, the son of the late Paul Miller Cowgill, Sr. and the late Louise Connor Cowgill.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Perri Cowgill, Salem; one son, David Eric Cowgill, Gibsonia, Pa.; a grandson, David Eric Cowgill, Jr., also of Gibsonia.
He is also survived by two sisters, Patricia Blair, Kenova, and Lois Kerwin, Maryville, Calif.; a brother, James Connor, Micco, Fla.; two nephews, four nieces and several great-nieces and great-nephews, and three daughters from a previous marriage, Erin Dare, Sara Beth and Cary Page and two grandsons.
Mr. Cowgill was a graduate of Marshall University and the West Virginia College of Law. He had been active in the practice of law in Kanawha, Ritchie and Doddridge counties prior to moving to Northern Virginia in 1967, where he was employed by the Interstate Commerce Commission as an Attorney Advisor and the Interstate Commerce Commission as an Attorney Advisor and later by the former D.C. Transit System as assistant general counsel.
In 1982, he returned to West Virginia and opened a law office in West Union, which has served Doddridge and neighboring counties. He served as the Director of Assessments and Levies in the first Underwood administration. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the West Virginia Bar Association and the Harrison County Bar Association.
Mr. Cowgill was also a member of Clarksburg Lodge No. 482, B.P.O. Elks and various other organizations. He was a Lutheran by faith.
Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday, where a funeral service will held at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Pastor Linda Muhly and the Reverend John Kopshina officiating. Interment will follow in Stonewall Park cemetery, Stonewood.
JAMES T. FAWCETT
FAIRMONT - James Thomas Fawcett, 90, of North Conway, N.H., and formerly of Fairmont and Clarksburg, died Friday afternoon in the Clipper House Nursing Home in New Hampshire.
He was born June 22, 1907, in Fairmont, the son of the late James Herdon and Mayme Thomas Fawcett.
Surviving are one son, James C. Fawcett, Grafton; five grandchildren, James Fawcett, Newburg, Elizabeth Doerr, McHenry, Md., Thomas Fawcett, Waverly, Ohio, Greg White, Mansfield, Mass. and Gary White, Amherst, N.H.; four great-grandchildren, Ryan and Kassandra Fawcett, Waverly, Austin Doerr, McHenry, and Abigail Lynn White, Mansfield.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite M. Fawcett, who died in 1981, and a daughter, Lynn Ann White.
He retired in 1988 as owner-operator of WHAR/WVHF radio station in Clarksburg with 25 years of service. He previously worked at WMNN radio in Fairmont for 10 years, the Jones Department Store, Fairmont and Owens Illinois Glass Factory in Fairmont.
He was a graduate of East Fairmont High School, where he was active in sports and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fairmont, where he taught Sunday School and coached basketball.
Friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Ford Funeral Home, Fairmont, and from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Roger Waybright officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn cemetery in Fairmont.
EARL D. FLUHARTY
Earl D. Fluharty, 63, of West Pike Street, died Saturday, July 26, at his residence, following a brief illness.
He was born March 2, 1934 in Smithfield, a late son of the late George R. Fluharty and Lucy Albright Fluharty.
Surviving are his wife, Betty L. Fluharty, whom he married April 1, 1956; two sons, Bradley D. "Rusty" Fluharty, Elkins, and Kevin E. Fluharty, Nitro; one daughter, Mrs. Antonio (Kathy) Romano, Bridgeport; six grandchildren, Brandi, Ashley and Cody Fluharty, all of Nitro, Ryan White, Elkins, Tony Romano, Jacksonville, N.C. and Charla Romano, Bridgeport; three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Alice Evelyn) Gregg, Clinton, Ohio, Mrs. Paul (Thelma) Sentelik, Naples, Fla. and Velma Shaffer, Clarksburg.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
Mr. Fluharty was a technician and former partner of Lawson Sales and Service.
Mr. Fluharty was a member of the St. James Methodist Church, Smithfield, Meuse Argonne Post No. 573 and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served with the United States Air Force.
Friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Davis Funeral Home, where the funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday with the Reverend Stanley E. Knisley officiating. Entombment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
AUBREY L. SWIGER, JR.
SALEM - Aubrey L. "Joe" Swiger, Jr., 75, of Jarvisville, died Saturday, July 26, in the United Hospital Center.
He was born June 4, 1922, in Reynoldsville, a son of the late A. L. "Mike" Swiger and Ada Goodwin Swiger.
On Sept. 26, 1936, he married Martha Marie Cain Swiger, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Lillian Cashdollar, Salem, and Linda Criss and Yvonne Jackson, both of Jarvisville; four sons, Joseph, Luke, and Charlie Herrod and Brian Koontz, all of Jarvisville; six grandchildren, Endris Riley, Holly Fisher, Stephen Cashdollar III, Chester and Joey Cashdollar and Amy McGary; fifteen great-grandchildren; 10 brothers, Richard, Elizabeth, Pa., Danny, Stonewood, Rex, Gene, Gail, Mike, Fay and Frenchie, all of Clarksburg, Jack, Liberty Addition and Denny, Gregory's Run; and six sisters, Anna Lee Hickman, Reynoldsville, Connie Machella, Spelter and Cindy Skinner, Minnie Costilow, Cathy Richardson and Robin Gonzalas, all of Clarksburg.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Swiger, a sister, Thelma Pratt, and a granddaughter, Esmah Davis.
Mr. Swiger was a welder and belonged to the Pipeliners Local No. 798, Tulsa, Okla. and Pipliners Local No. 152, Morgantown. He was a fox hunter, and a softball player, coach and sponsor.
He was a member of the Coplin United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for 15 years.
Friends will be received from 1-9 p.m. Monday at the Harbert Funeral Home, 289 West Main St., Salem, where the funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Lester Stinebiser officiating. Interment will follow in the Coplin United Methodist Church cemetery.
NEVA E. WILT
TENNERTON - Neva Ellen Wilt, 82, of Route 1, French Creek, died Friday, July 25, at St. Joseph's Hospital.
She was born Feb. 16, 1915, in Upshur County, the daughter of the later Ora Haynes Withers.
Her husband, Marion Wheeler Wilt, whom she married on April 19, 1935, preceded her in death on May 20, 1971.
She is survived by three sons, Charles L. Wilt, Colorado Springs, Colo., James H. Wilt, French Creek and Ralph R. Wilt, Staunton, Va.; one daughter, Carol Sue Nay, Shinnston; 14 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren; one half brother, William G. Withers, Jr., Canton, Ohio; three half-sisters, Mrs. Ann Hawkinberry, Farmington, and Mrs. Martha Casuccio and Leona Cliett, both of Merritt Island, Fla.
She was also preceded in death by a half brother, Groover Withers.
Mrs. Wilt was an active member of the Kanawha Run United Methodist Church.
Friends will be received from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Kanawha Run United Methodist Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Kanawha Run cemetery.
JAMES E. BYRNE
FLATWOODS - James E. "Spink" Byrne, 61, of Napier, died July 26, following a farming accident in Long Run.
Mr. Byrne was born March 1, 1936, at Dutch, the son of Ralph Byrne of Napier and the late Thelma J. Byrne.
Surviving are two sisters, Frances Byrne, Fairmont; Lena Jo Riffle, Gem; and one foster brother, Larry Ray Conrad, Frametown.
Mr. Byrne was preceded in death by one brother, Denzil Ray Byrne.

MRS. RUSSEL ESKEW
BUCKHANNON - Fannie V. Eskew, 76, of Rt.2, French Creek, died Sunday, July 27, at St. Joseph's Hospital.
She was born July 20, 1921, in French Creek, the daughter of the late Edward M. Cox and the late Zenna Belle Riffle.
She was united in marriage on October 10, 1949, to Russell Merl Eskew, who preceded her in death on April 14, 1975.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Randall (Sharon) McNemar, Buckhannon Jerri Eskew, French Creek, and Connie Baston, French Creek; four grandchildren, Rusty and Heather Baston and Katie and Kirk McNemar; two sisters, Mrs. Paul (Nellie) Stevens, Fairmont, and Geraldine Cox, French Creek.
She was preceded in death by a brother, James Edward Cox.
Mrs. Eskew was a member of the Waterloo United Methodist Church.
JAMES E. SHEPHERD
WEST UNION - James E. "Jim" Shepherd, 59, of Rt.1 Greenwood, died at 12:07 p.m., Saturday, July 26, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Parkersburg following an extended illness.
He was born in Parkersburg on March 26, 1938, a son of the late Joseph C. and Lillie M. (Underwood) Shepherd.
He is survived by his wife Fern (Satterfield) Shepherd, whom he married January 8, 1963.
Also surviving are one daughter, Melissa Shepherd, Greenwood; one son, James E. Shepherd II, Greenwood; one brother Carroll E. Shepherd, Greenwood; three grandchildren, Stephanie Gullett, Michigan, Joshua Ferguson, Central Station, and Arizona Nicholson of Greenwood.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald R. Shepherd and Raymond Shepherd.
Mr. Shepherd was a United States Army Veteran with service during the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Consolidated Gas Company in 1986 with over 21 years of service as a compressor operator. Mr. Shepherd was a member of the Arnold's Creek Christian Church in Deep Valley, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Family will receive friends at the Spurgeon Funeral Home, 212 Front St., from 2-9 p.m. today.
