Winifred Joyce Bennett
Winifred Joyce Bennett, 71, who first conceived and spearheaded the effort that scientifically established a genetic link between Thomas Jefferson and descendants of his slave Sally Hemmings, died Saturday from kidney failure at her home in Arlington, Virginia.
She was born July 12, 1935, in Columbus Ohio, the daughter of William J. Joyce Jr. and Sara Louise Beeler Joyce.
Ms. Bennett graduated from Dana Hall School of Wellesley, MA, in 1953. She re-ceived her BA degree in Philosophy and Art History from Cornell University in 1957, and served as president of her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta. Once graduated, she moved to New York City, where she was offered a contract with Ford Modeling Agency while pursuing a graduate degree in Philosophy and Art History at New York University.
Due to her strong logic background, the Meade Paper Company invited Ms. Bennett to help develop and apply a new technology, the computer. She moved to Dayton, OH, and at Meade, wrote computer programs for many large corporations.
She married Hunter M. Bennett Jr. in 1963 and relocated to West Virginia, where she spent the next 30 years raising her family in Weston and later Clarksburg.
She was active in many local organizations, including the Tuesday Club literary society. As education continued to be one of her passions, Ms. Bennett assisted the Harrison County public school system in implementing its first gifted program. There she taught computer programming. Later, she wrote programs for Brockway Glass Company.
After her divorce in 1993, she relocated to Charlottesville, VA, and continued her postgraduate studies at the University of Virginia. There she became interested in the history of Monticello and the Jefferson family. She was amazed to discover that no one had yet thought to apply modern genetic testing methods to determine whether Thomas Jefferson had indeed fathered children with his slave, Sally Hemmings.
Ms. Bennett researched, identified and located Jefferson and Hemmings descendants, and convinced them and medical professionals at UVA to assist her in a quest to discover the truth. Meticulous DNA workups proved that at least one child of Sally Hemmings, her son Eston, did in fact have Jefferson blood running in his veins. In addition, using historical records from Monticello, Ms. Bennett confirmed that Thomas Jefferson shared the same roof with Ms. Hemmings during the period when Eston was conceived.
Ms. Bennett also conducted extensive interviews describing the expectations and subsequent impact of the DNA test results on the lives of those who proved to be Jefferson descendants, and those who incorrectly had suspected a relationship. The bombshell of this proof is evidenced by innumerable articles, books and films documenting the Jefferson/Hemmings relationship, which captured the imagination of the country.
Since 1996, Ms. Bennett resided in Arlington, VA, with her daughter and grandchildren. Ms. Bennett was involved in many national and local organizations, such as the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Patterson House renovation and renewal, the Washington Club and Capital Speakers. She continued to enjoy reading, writing and playing bridge.
Her survivors include her son, John Jackson Bennett of New York, NY; her daughter, Phoebe Bennett of Arlington, VA; her brother, William B. Joyce of Basking Ridge, NJ; and three grandchildren.
