Surviving are one son, Frederick R. Lang of Charleston; five grandchildren, David Lang, Susan Lang Miller, Samantha Lang Wafford, Lisa Lang Pritchard, and Sarah Lang Marconi; 10 great-grandchildren, Joshua Lang, Brieanne Lang, Kyle Miller, Ashley Miller, Matthew Wafford, MacKenzie Wafford, Jessica Pritchard, Samuel Pritchard, Greer Pritchard, and Katherine Pritchard.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Samuel Charles Lang; four brothers, Charles Stalnaker, Clarence Stalnaker, Homer Stalnaker, and David Stalnaker; and two sisters, Suella Stalnaker Heater and Lenora Stalnaker Davis.
Mrs. Lang and her husband formerly owned and operated Lang's Clothing Store in Weston. In Charleston, she was employed by Lang's Pharmacy and Commercial Insurance. She was a graduate of Clarksburg Business School.
She was a member of Charleston Baptist Temple, American Baptist Woman's Ministries, and Grayce Philathia Class; a former deaconess; a 50-year member of Eastern Star Chapter 49 of Weston; and a former member of the Woman's Club of Charleston and the Garden Club.
Mrs. Lang donated her body to The Human Gift Registry at West Virginia University. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests that donations in Mrs. Lang's name be made to Charleston Baptist Temple.
Marguerite F. Marple
Marguerite F. Marple, 74, of 113 Williams Ave., Weston, died at 12 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at her residence, following an extended illness.
She was born Sept. 28, 1928, on Maxwell Run in Lewis County, a daughter of the late Margie Kelley.
Her husband, Clenley Marple, whom she married Jul. 1, 1951, survives.
Also surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Sheila and Dennis Norman of Weston and Pamela McClain of Lost Creek; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Susan Marple of Route Four, Weston; four grandchildren, Natalie Frashure, Chasidy Murray, Chad Marple, and Gerald McClain II.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Regina.
Mrs. Marple was retired from the Lewis County Board of Education, having been a cook at Kitsonville School and Polk Creek Elementary School. She had previously been a cook at the Jackson's Mill State 4-H Camp. She was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church and attended First Presbyterian Church in Weston. She was also a member of the Weston Garden Club and the Theresa Snaith Auxiliary of Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital.
A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, at Boyle Funeral Home, with Rev. Russell Furr officiating. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Leonard L. McHenry
Leonard L. McHenry, 64, a resident of the Waldeck community of Weston, died at 12:50 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at West Virginia University Hospital in Morgantown, following an unexpected illness.
He was born Oct. 24, 1938, on Little Ellis in Gilmer County, a son of the late Arden and Garnett Radcliff McHenry.
His wife, Wanda Alltop McHenry, whom he married Dec. 30, 1976, survives.
Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Sherri Reed of Weston and David and Barbara Reed of Weston; one daughter, Annie McVay of Weston; six grandchildren, Bryan Reed, Matthew Reed, Chris Reed, Kevin Reed, Cheryl Reed, and Tom McVay; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Marjorie Flower of Linn; four brothers, Kenard McHenry of Mount Clare, Leroy McHenry of Cedarville, Arden McHenry of Linn, and Gerald McHenry of Linn; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Basil McHenry; and one infant brother.
Mr. McHenry was a graduate of Sand Fork High School. He retired from the Weston State Hospital with 27 years of service and was a Methodist.
A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Ellyson Mortuary Inc. in Glenville, with Pastor Bryan Groves officiating. Interment followed in the McHenry cemetery on Indian Fork in Gilmer County.
Ernest H. Messenger
Ernest H. Messenger, 81, of Township 32, Waterford, died at 10:15 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at DaySpring Healthcare Center in Beverly.
He was born Jan. 6, 1922, at Linn, a son of the late Peter and Ella Pickerell Messenger.
His wife, Dolores Collins Messenger, whom he married Dec. 23, 1950, survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Debbie Malec and her husband Dan of Waterford; two grandsons, Ernest Malec and his wife Teresa of Waterford and Jason Malec and his wife Antoniette of San Antonio, Tex.; one granddaughter, Mandy Neader and her husband Matt of Beverly; four great-grandchildren, Rebecca Sims, Hillary Malec, Cody Malec, and Marissa Neader.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Mr. Messenger was a truck driver; he owned and operated a trucking business for many years. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Submarine Service. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the Pearl Harbor attack and was the last survivor of the attack in Washington County.
A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at McCurdy Funeral Home in Beverly, with Rev. Karl Kesselring officiating. Burial followed in the Waterford cemetery, with military services conducted at the graveside.
David Lee Moore
David Lee Moore, 60, a resident of the Lorentz community of Buckhannon, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Charleston Memorial Hospital in Charleston.
He was born Aug. 11, 1942, in Lewis County, a son of the late David Hugh Moore and Helen Virginia Knight Puffenbarger.
His wife, Karen Sue Stalnaker Moore, whom he married Dec. 21, 1962, survives.
Also surviving are a son, Steven L. Moore of Lorentz; a sister, Jackie Moore Barre of Louisiana; three brothers, Denny Moore and Billy Moore, both of Ohio, and Jerry Moore of Weston; several nieces and nephews; and his stepfather, Everett Puffenbarger.
Mr. Moore was the owner of Video Zone in Weston. He was a Methodist.
A funeral service will be held today, Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 1 p.m., at Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel in Buckhannon, with Rev. William C. Eskew Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Lorentz cemetery.
Anna Louise Sharpless
Anna Louise Sharpless, 49, of 353 Mid Ave. in Weston, Shadybrook community, died at 8:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Grafton City Hospital in Grafton, following an extended illness.
She was born Aug. 14, 1953, in Lewis County, a daughter of the late John Edward and Rosetta Maxine (Brown) Kenney.
Her husband, Delroy L. Sharpless, whom she married Mar. 6, 1970, survives.
Also surviving are one grandson, Tyler Edward Bandy of Weston; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sandra and Frank Staats of Hortense, Ga., and Mary M. and Robert "Eddie" DeGarmo of Weston; one brother, John J. Kenney of Weston; one sister-in-law, Carlene Kenney of Jane Lew; her mother- and father-in-law, Sarah and Perry Box of Sheffield Lake, Ohio; an uncle, Jack Brown and his wife Louise of Weston; a special friend, Ellen Marks of Weston; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, John Edward Sharpless; one brother, Lawrence Edward Kenney; and one sister, Regina Kenney.
Mrs. Sharpless was a homemaker. She was a member of Weston Assembly of God and enjoyed reading Christian books and watching Christian movies.
Friends will be received at Weston Assembly of God today, Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., with Rev. Mark Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Nora Bliss Smith
Nora Bliss Smith, 93, formerly of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Nella's Nursing Home in Crystal Springs, following an extended illness.
She was born Nov. 30, 1909, in Gilmer County, a daughter of the late William Waugh James and Alma Nora (Reed) James.
Her husband, James Lloyd Smith, whom she married Aug. 15, 1957, preceded her in death Apr. 26, 1989.
Surviving are one stepdaughter, Wanda Rogers of Akron, Ohio; two stepgrandsons, Daniel Hoover of Weston and Butch Hoover of Ohio; one stepgranddaughter, Jenny Smith of Elkins; several stepgreat-grandchildren; three brothers, Clark James of Glenville, W.T. James of Ravenswood, and Samuel James of Parkersburg; one stepdaughter-in-law, Mimi Smith of Elkins; several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one infant daughter; one stepson, James L. Smith Jr.; one stepdaughter, Betty Hoover; seven brothers, Justus, Parker, Boyd, John, David, and Butcher James and an infant brother; two sisters, Mildred White and Mary Altop.
Mrs. Smith owned and operated the former J&B Donut Shop in Weston, where she was a baker. She was a member of Christian Fellowship Church of Buckhannon.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at Floyd Funeral Home, with Rev. Ed McDaniels officiating. Interment followed in the Weston Masonic cemetery.
Consuelo Curry Ward
Consuelo Curry Ward, 99, died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003.
She was born Sept. 22, 1903, at Parkersburg, a daughter of the late James Nelson and Nancy Furbee Curry.
She met and married Arthur R. Ward in 1929. He died in 1983.
Mrs. Ward and her husband moved to Weston shortly after their marriage and lived in Weston until they moved to Fairmont in 1951.
She was an Episcopalian and was active in the Rowe Guild as well as many civic organizations, especially the Daughters of the American Revolution, of which she was Regent in the Major William Haymond Chapter in Fairmont.
Her sole survivor is a son, Arthur N. Ward, M.D., of Marietta, Ga., with whom she had lived since 1993.
The body was cremated at the request of the deceased. A memorial service will be held in her son's Christian meeting.
Robert Lee Winans
Robert Lee Winans, 58, of 419 Pratt St. in Weston, died at 10:20 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at United Hospital Center in Clarksburg, following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 6, 1944, in Lewis County, a son of the late Brent F. and Alta Mae Puffenbarger Winans.
His wife, Shelby Jean Morris Winans, preceded him in death Jan. 27, 1984.
Surviving are one stepson, James David Morris of Clarksburg; three sisters, Emma Jean Sharier of West Lafayette, Ohio, Anna Mae Wilmoth of Horner, and Donna Jean Goldsmith of Weston; five brothers, Dan, John, Tom, Steve and Ron Winans, all of Camden.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Brent Cecil Winans and William Edward Pope.
Mr. Winans was a member of the Sand Fork Church of God. He was a glassworker and a truck driver.
A funeral service was held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, at Boyle Funeral Home, with Rev. Brian Groves officiating. Interment followed in the Snyder cemetery at Churchville.
