Hayward Kemp Smith, 81, of Route Four, Buckhannon, Childers Run community, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.
He was born October 31, 1919, at Crawford, a son of the late Wirt G. and Violet McCray Smith.
His wife, Wanda Priest Smith, whom he married October 7, 1941, died October 24, 2000.
Surviving are one son, Kenneth L. Smith of Clendenin; one daughter, Donna Rae Bell of Stafford, Va.; five grandchildren, Christopher Smith, Jessica Keel, Allyson Keel Speet, William Keel, and Justin Smith; two great-grandchildren, Aislinn Speet and Meredith Speet; one brother, William Smith of Bealeton, Va.; four sisters, Mrs. Warren (Elsie) Steerman of Harrington, Del., Madeline Eckes of Buckhannon, Mrs. Carl (Jean) Lowther of Ireland, and Virginia Ellis of New Castle, Del.; several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Warren Gayle Smith; and one sister, Mary Lee Collins.
Mr. Smith retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of service; he served during World War II and the Korean Conflict and served in the Civilian Conservation Camp. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 15 years of service.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, April 3, at 11 a.m., at Alkire Funeral Chapel in Ireland, with Father James Murphy officiating. Interment followed in the McCutchan Chapel cemetery.
Thomas L. Stalnaker
Thomas Linn Stalnaker, 57, of the Pleasant Valley community of Fairmont, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
He was born February 24, 1944, at Weston, a son of the late Frank W. and Cotha Frame Stalnaker.
Surviving are his wife, Jane Martin Stalnaker of Fairmont; two sons, Matthew Stalnaker and Mark Linn Stalnaker, both of Fairmont; one sister, Sheila Anne Wilson of Linn; two aunts, Edna Frame Fitzpatrick of Belmont and Nellie Stalnaker Pierce of New Castle, Ind.
Mr. Stalnaker was employed by State Farm Insurance Company as a claim specialist with 31 years of service. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.
A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 2, at Troy Baptist Church. Interment followed in the IOOF cemetery at Troy. Ford Funeral Home of Fairmont was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Loretta M. Stout
Loretta M. Stout, 92, of Willowick, Ohio, died Sunday, March 31, 2001, at Manor Care Nursing Home in Willoughby, Ohio, following an extended illness.
She was born February 23, 1909, in Braxton County, a daughter of the late James and Hallie Spicer Robinson.
Her husband, Arden Lee Stout, whom she married April 12, 1934, preceded her in death December 3, 1991.
Surviving are five daughters and four sons-in-law, Iona Craig of Willowick, Ohio, Nancy and Jeff Schwarzwalper of Mentor-on-the-Lake, Ohio, Linda and Ken Barber of Kirtland, Ohio, Joann and Darrell Meadows of Roanoke, and Donnie and Wes Wells of Willowick, Ohio; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Polly Stout of Painesville, Ohio, and Bob and Janet Stout of Kirtland, Ohio; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, James Robinson; and one sister, Aurlena Nicholson.
Mrs. Stout was a homemaker.
A funeral service will be held today, Wednesday, April 4, at 1 p.m., at Boyle Funeral Home, with Rev. David Jessie officiating. Interment will follow in the Sutton City cemetery.
Mildred H. Waggoner
Mildred Harriet Waggoner, 79, of Essex, Md., died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Franklin Square Hospital Center in Rossville, Md.
She was born January 16, 1922, at Freeport, Pa., a daughter of the late Paul Johnson Wilson and Olive Carey Wilson.
Her husband, George W. Waggoner, survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Jane Morley of Hollywood, S.C., and Dolores Small of Nutter Fort; one son, Raymond Waggoner of Burlington, Ky.; two sisters, Gealdean Myers and Virginia Pitts; one brother, Paul Wilson Jr.; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
One son, George W. Waggoner Jr., is deceased.
Mrs. Waggoner attended Freeport High School in Pennsylvania and was a computer operator at the Baltimore County Courthouse.
A funeral service will be held today, Wednesday, April 4, at noon, at Morris Funeral Home in Jane Lew. Burial will follow in the Freemansburg United Methodist Church cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour.
Hettie E. Dennison
Hettie E. Dennison, 68, of Lawrenceville, Ga., formerly of Ellenboro, died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Lawrenceville.
She was born April 9, 1933, at Salem, a daughter of the late James B. and Zelma Davis Gum.
Her husband, Homer M. Dennison, preceded her in death.
Surviving are one son, Rick Dennison of Pennsboro; two daughters, Rosena M. Rogers of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, and Nina Williams of Lawrenceville, Ga.; three sisters, Blair Ann Middleton, Sue Somerville, and Lou Cumpston, all of Parkersburg; three brothers, Bill and Mike Gum, both of Parkersburg, and Dave Gum of Weston; six grandchildren.
Mrs. Dennison was a homemaker and a Methodist. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 20 of Ellenboro.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 29, at Pennsboro Apostolic Church in Pennsboro, with Pastor Frank Simons officiating. Burial followed in the Ellenboro cemetery at Ellenboro. McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Floyd Richard Keith
Floyd Richard Keith, 79, of 834 Walnut Street in Weston, died at 12:10 a.m. Sunday, July 1, 2001, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston, following an extended illness.
He was born March 2, 1922, at Weston, a son of the late Floyd Ernest and Victoria Everett Keith.
His wife of 58 years, Mary Lee Butcher Keith, survives.
Also surviving are one son, David Richard Keith of Cross Lanes; three grandsons, Chadwick Martin Keith and his wife Melissa of Seth, Bradley Eugene Keith and his wife Dawn of Seth, and Jamie Allen Keith and his wife Stephanie of East Bank; two great-granddaughters, Marissa Keith of Seth and Samantha Jo Keith of East Bank; one daughter-in-law, Terri S. Keith of Seth; five sisters, Mrs. Carl (Maxine) Slaughter of Weston, Mrs. James (Vergie) Riffle of St. Albans, Mrs. James (Ruth) Archibald of East Palestine, Ohio, Mary Aladine Marangoni of Akron, Ohio, and Mrs. Don (Joan) Singleton of Bristol, Conn.; two brothers, Rondal Keith of Terryville, Conn., and Fay R. Keith and his wife Darlene of Uniontown, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Martin Lee Keith; two sisters, Mildred Barnett and Zelda Keith (an infant sister); and one brother, Brighton E. Keith.
Mr. Keith was a heavy equipment operator for many years in this area. He was maintenance supervisor for Big Mountain Coal Company-Armco at Prenter for 15 years. He served as a corporal in the Army 338th Engineers Regiment, Company D, during World War II, from 1942 until 1945, during which time he was in North Africa and Italy. He was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church, where he held several offices. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, July 3, at 2 p.m., at Broad Street United Methodist Church, with Rev. Clifford West officiating. Interment followed in the Weston Masonic cemetery. Military graveside services were conducted by American Legion Post 4 of Weston, American Legion Post 166 of Jane Lew, VFW Post 5131 of Jane Lew, DAV Chapter 51, and Central WV Chapter 697 Military Order of Purple Heart. Mildred Allman Kraus
Mildred Allman Kraus, 89, of Weston, died at 2:20 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2001, at her residence, following an extended illness.
She was born April 10, 1912, at Jane Lew, a daughter of the late Guy and Blanche Musser Allman.
Her husband, Joseph Kraus, whom she married in 1949, preceded her in death in June 1961.
Surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, John K. "Keeko" and Mary Allman of Roanoke, Va.; several special nieces and nephews, Susie Kraus Stark, Pat Kraus, Dave Kraus, Helen Carney, and Joanne Carney, all of Weston, Michael Stark of Jane Lew, John and Darla Allman of Roanoke, Va., Nancy Conroy of Leveltown, N.Y., and Peter Allman of Sunnyside, N.Y.; several great-nieces and great-nephews, Theresa Johnston, Robert Stark, and Randy Stark, all of Weston, Stephanie Allman and Shannon Allman Flint, both of Roanoke, Va.; and many great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Mrs. Kraus was a graduate of Jane Lew High School and Salem College. She was an elementary and reading teacher in Lewis County for 42 years and a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Weston.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, July 2, at 10 a.m., at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Rev. Father John Ralph as celebrant. Interment followed in the Broad Run cemetery at Jane Lew. Boyle Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Ralph Douglas
Ralph Carl "Doug" Douglas Jr., 82, of 620 Center Avenue in Weston, died at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Crestview Manor in Jane Lew, following an extended illness.
He was born April 29, 1919, in Lewis County, a son of the late Ralph and Vada B. (Russell) Douglas.
His wife of 55 years, Avenell June (Allman) Douglas, survives.
Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, John Joseph and Debra (Carpenter) Douglas of Weston and Stephen Criss and Nina (Sims) Douglas of Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Robin Douglas and Joe L. Helms II of Matthews, N.C.; one sister, Genevieve (Douglas) Weaver of Akron, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Eric Martin of St. Petersburg, Fla., Jennifer Dodrill of Bridgeport, Steven Douglas of Atlanta, Ga., Rachael Douglas of Weston, Tess Douglas of Weston, Jared and Conner Helms of Matthews, N.C., and Olivia Douglas of Weston; three great-grandchildren, John, Joseph and Jaryn Dodrill, all of Bridgeport; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Curt Russell Douglas; and one sister, Kathleen (Douglas) Gainer.
Mr. Douglas was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the 201st Infantry during World War II. He later joined the Army Reserves and was a member of and held the office of president of the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He worked for the B&O Railroad and then went into the oil and gas drilling supply business. He retired from McJunkin Corporation as a sales representative with many years of service. He held the office of Chairman of the Board of Directors for three consecutive terms at Deerfield Country Club in Weston. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, and meeting his buddies for breakfast at Hardee's. He was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church.
A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 30, at Boyle Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Michael Linger officiating. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Barbara A. Reynolds
Barbara A. Reynolds, 62, of 931 Raccoon Run Road in Weston, died at 9:45 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, following a sudden illness.
She was born September 30, 1938, at Ravenna, Ohio, a daughter of the late Edward and Mamie Hayden.
Her husband, John "Dick" Reynolds, whom she married November 23, 1968, survives.
Also surviving are one son, Lloyd Richard Reynolds of St. Augustine, Fla.; two sisters, Nancy Fisher of Ravenna, Ohio, and Ruth Shortridge of Star City, Tenn.
Mrs. Reynolds was a cook and a waitress and later worked as a home health aide. She was a member of Grace Baptist Temple at Jane Lew.
A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, at Boyle Funeral Home, with Rev. Roger Brown officiating. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Draper Lee Strader
Draper Lee Strader, 62, of Route Four, Weston, died at 7:30 p.m. June 27, 2001, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston, following an extended illness.
He was born January 2, 1939, in Lewis County, a son of the late Draper Clay and Edna Blanche (Shouldis) Strader.
His wife, the former Kay Shrader, whom he married July 1, 1961, survives.
Also surviving are one son, Dennis Lee Strader of Clarksburg; four daughters, Cathy Strader, Malisa Westfall, and Crystal Strader, all of Weston, and Sonia Waugh of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Gary Lynn and Phyllis Strader of Weston and Elwood and Sandy Strader of Weston; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Betty Jo and Darrell Burkhammer of Weston and Clara Atchison of Weston; six grandchildren, Andrea, Haley and Madison Waugh, all of Columbus, Ohio, Joshua Hicks, Malisa Collette Westfall, and Marina Westfall, all of Weston; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant sister, Shirley Ann Strader; one infant brother, Charles Lesley Strader; one brother-in-law, Jack Atchison; and one sister-in-law, Sue Strader.
Mr. Strader retired after 45 years of service in the glassware manufacturing business; the West Virginia Glass Specialty Company in Weston consumed most of those years. He was a member of Weston Moose Lodge 1376 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Weston. He was a Methodist.
A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 30, at Boyle Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Michael Linger officiating. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
