Elias Robert Brown

Elias Robert Brown, 76, of Route One, Weston, died Thursday evening, August 10, 2000, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.

He was born October 13, 1923, at Jane Lew, a son of the late Elias Clough and Emma Gay Smith Brown.

His wife, Agnes May Titus, whom he married in 1948, preceded him in death December 10, 1993.

Surviving are two sons, Jack Brown of Weston and Robert Gordon Brown of Weston; two daughters, Barbara Ellen Brown of Weston and Dianna Brown of Jane Lew; one sister, Barbara Brown Benton of Virginia; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Elizabeth Brown Sands; and one brother, John Brown.

Mr. Brown was a heavy equipment operator. He was a Baptist and a member of the Weston National Guard.
A funeral service was held Monday, August 14, at 11 a.m., at Morris Funeral Home in Jane Lew, with Rev. Russell Furr officiating. Burial followed in the Broad Run cemetery.

Karen L. Fittro

Karen L. Fittro, 58, of Clarksburg, died at 5:05 p.m. Sunday, August 13, 2000, at her daughter's residence in Clarksburg, following an extended illness.

She was born December 20, 1941, at Clarksburg, a daughter of the late Glen E. and Olive Westfall Fittro.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Susan J. and Tommy F. Thomas of Clarksburg; one brother, David N. Fittro of Clarksburg; three nieces, Angie Fittro of South Carolina, Mrs. Larry (Jill) Boso of Parkersburg, and Mrs. Steve (Connie) Jenkins of South Carolina; two nephews, Jonathan Fittro of Clarksburg and Bryan Fittro of Bridgeport.

Ms. Fittro was a member of United Methodist Temple on Locust Avenue in Clarksburg. She worked as a cook and nurse's aide and later was a licensed practical nurse at Crestview Manor in Jane Lew and Clarksburg Continuous Care Center in Clarksburg.
A funeral service will be held today, Wednesday, August 16, at 1 p.m., at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home in Clarksburg, with Rev. William Haynes Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Marshville Baptist Church cemetery at Marshville.

Lena H. Hall

Lena H. Hall, 78, of Route One, Weston, died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 9, 2000, at the home of a daughter in Weston, following an extended illness.

She was born July 26, 1922, at Benson, a daughter of the late Homer H. and Orpha Simons Hitt.

Her husband, Doyle Amerson Hall, whom she married August 29, 1942, preceded her in death June 5, 1984.

Surviving are two daughters, Alice Jean Fisher of Weston (at whose home she died) and Sara Jane Gilkerson of Scott Depot; one son, Robert D. Hall of Waynesburg, Pa.; five granddaughters and one great-grandchild; one brother, Ralph Hitt of Moorefield; several nieces and nephews.

One sister, Ruth Hitt, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Hall was a housewife. She was a member of Freeman's Creek Baptist Church, the Freemansburg Community Club, and Weston Chapter 40 Order of the Eastern Star.
A funeral service was held Friday, August 11, at 11 a.m., at Floyd Funeral Home, with Rev. Brad Tenney officiating, assisted by Rev. Martin Wine. Interment followed in the Weston Masonic cemetery. The family requests that memorial donations in Mrs. Hall's name be made to People's Hospice, PO Box 1680, Clarksburg, WV 26302-9960.

Viola Mae Jewell

Viola Mae Jewell, 90, of Route Three, Weston, Gaston community, died at 4 p.m. Thursday, August 10, 2000, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston, following an extended illness.

She was born March 14, 1910, at Georgetown in Lewis County, a daughter of the late Hughie C. and Luesettie Kelley Clark.

In 1930, she married Paul Jewell, to whom she was married for 28 years.

Surviving are one daughter, Dorothy L. Brown of Weston; one son, David Paul Jewell of Martinsville, Ind.; 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 3 stepgrandchildren, 7 stepgreat-grandchildren, and 2 stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Katherine Jewell Evans; five brothers, Otie, Erlo, Woodrow, Walter and Arthur "Bus" Clark; and one sister, Agnes Clark.

Mrs. Jewell was a homemaker and a Methodist.
A funeral service was held Sunday, August 13, at 1:30 p.m., at Floyd Funeral Home, with Rev. Wayne Smith officiating. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

William "Mac" McKinney

William Denver "Mac" McKinney, 83, of Elkins, formerly of Sunset Acres in Weston, died Tuesday, August 8, 2000, at 8:30 p.m., at Camden Clark Hospital in Parkersburg, following an extended illness.

He was born October 26, 1916, in Lewis County, a son of the late William P. and Cora Hersman McKinney.

His wife, Cleo McKinney, whom he married September 10, 1988, survives.

Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Jim Goss of Ephrata, Pa.; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Glenda and John Hyre of Weston; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Glenn and Patricia Hammer of Dublin, Ohio; two grandchildren, Douglas Goss of Mount Clare, Va., and Michael Goss of Sterling, Va.; five stepgrandchildren, Kerri Kiser of Blairsville, Pa., Susan Moody of Weston, Brad Hyre of Weirton, Todd Hammer of Columbus, Ohio, and Chance Hammer of Cleveland, Ohio; three nephews, Richard and Charles Queen, both of Morgantown, and Howard Reeder of Buckhannon.

He was preceded in death by one nephew, Hayward Fox.

Mr. McKinney graduated from Weston High School in 1935 and attended Glenville State College and Fairmont State College. He received a Masters Degree in Education from West Virginia University and completed postgraduate studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He taught in the public school system in Lewis County and served as principal in Monongalia County. He later served as principal in Fairfax County, Va., where he retired several years ago. He was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Weston, the Weston Rotary Club, the WV Association of Former Teachers, and the AARP.
A funeral service was held Saturday, August 12, at 10 a.m., at Boyle Funeral Home, with Rev. Michael Linger officiating Interment followed in the Fairview cemetery at Berlin.

Leslie Hayward Smith

Leslie Hayward Smith, 67, of Buckhannon, died Saturday, August 12, 2000, at Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Clarksburg.

He was born August 27, 1932, at Buckhannon, a son of the late Dewey and Jessie Fortney Smith.

His wife, Alice Ann Auskings Smith, whom he married May 7, 1951, survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Leslie H. Smith Jr. of Clinton, N.C., and Richard B. Smith of Martin, Ky.; one daughter, Melissa Smith Corley of Clinton, N.C.; five granddaughters, Judy Ann and Rose Anna Smith, both of Buckhannon, Cheridan K. Corley, Mikaela J. Corley, and Leslee B. Corley, all of Clinton, N.C.; three grandsons, John D. Corley II of Clinton, N.C., Ricky Smith of Buckhannon, and Robert Leslie Smith of Charleston; five stepgrandchildren, Justin, Kimberly, Shane, Stephanie and Terry Hall, all of Martin, Ky.; four great-grandchildren, Billy Cole, Shynna Casada, Victoria Casada, and Alicia Ann Smith, all of Buckhannon; four sisters, Virginia Henline of Weston, Wanda Stout of New Canton, Va., Vera Fitzpatrick of Conroe, Tex., and Maxine Zirkle of Rowland Heights, Calif.; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Deborah Lynn and Pamela Ann Smith; one grandson, Leslie H. "Lee" Smith III; and two brothers, Haymond Smith and Dewey Smith Jr.

Mr. Smith retired from Corhart Refractories with 25 1/2 years of service. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of Buckhannon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663 and the Orioles Lodge of Buckhannon. He had worked at The Record-Delta newspaper in recent years.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 15, at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home in Buckhannon, with Rev. Sid Cleavenger officiating. Burial followed in the Heavner cemetery. Buckhannon VFW Post 3663 and Frank B. Bartlett Post 7 American Legion conducted military gravesite rites.

Burl H. Smith

Burl H. Smith, 84, of Buckhannon, died Thursday, October 5, 2000, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.

He was born March 25, 1916, at Hemlock, a son of the late Sanford and Nola Nicholas Smith.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathryn Canterbury and Susan Shreve, both of Buckhannon; five sons, David C. Hull of Dillon, S.C., Burl J. Smith, Rodney L. Smith, and Timothy P. Smith, all of Buckhannon, and Wayne Sanford Smith of Horner; one sister, Mamie Tenney of Buckhannon; 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, John A. Hull; and one sister, Rosie Hoover.

Mr. Smith was a coal miner and a lumberman. He served in the Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of French Creek Chapter 36 DAV and Frank B. Bartlett Post 7 American Legion.
A funeral service was held Sunday, October 8, at 2 p.m., at Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, with Rev. Lloyd Tenney officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Olive Church cemetery at Hemlock. Frank B. Bartlett Post 7 American Legion, VFW Post 3663, and French Creek Chapter 36 DAV conducted military honors. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Genevieve Marie Frazier

Genevieve Marie Paugh Frazier, 87, formerly of Route One, Jane Lew, died Monday, October 9, 2000, at 4:42 a.m., at County Living Personal Care Home.

She was born September 18, 1913, at Clarksburg, a daughter of the late Alvin P. and Sudie Wiant Paugh.

Her husband, John Presley Frazier, whom she married September 17, 1932, preceded her in death August 29, 1989.

Surviving are four sons, Donald Frazier and Tom Frazier, both of Jane Lew, Jack Frazier of Route Three, Weston, and Francis Frazier of Route One, Bridgeport; three half brothers, James Paugh of Grafton, Roscoe Paugh of Harrisburg, Ill., and Lonnie Paugh of Jane Lew; five half sisters, Willa Dean Nelson of Lansing, Mich., Ruth Senerad of Flint, Mich., Ava Metheney of Bridgeport, June Kennedy of Swartz Creek, Mich., and Debbie Brooks of Morgantown; one sister, Norene Shultz of New Martinsville; two special friends, Sherry and Charlie Sellers of Jane Lew; 9 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son, John Frazier Jr.; two sisters, Beulah McWhorter and Garnett Corley; and two brothers, Hunter and Denzil Paugh.

Mrs. Frazier worked for the Lewis County Board of Education for 17 years as a cook at Jane Lew School. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and McWhorter United Methodist Church.
A funeral service will be held today, Wednesday, October 11, at 2 p.m., at Morris Funeral Home at Jane Lew, with Rev. Ronald Brown officiating, assisted by Karen Walls. Burial will follow in the Broad Run cemetery.

Harold Eugene Bailey

Harold Eugene Bailey, 79, of Franklin, died October 8, 2000, at his residence, after a brief illness.

He was born October 9, 1920, at Weston, a son of the late Gerald and Raytee Heater Bailey of Weston.

His wife, Dorothy M. Linger Bailey, survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Jane Beachler of Franklin; one son, Harold E. Bailey Jr. of Weston; six grandchildren, Brian Dunlop Bailey, Tyler Dunlop Bailey, and Lindsay Dunlop Bailey, all of Weston, Allen Beachler and Billy Jo Beachler, both of Franklin, and Travis Beachler of Pompano Beach, Fla.; one sister, Geraldine Cochran of Bridgeport; several nieces and nephews.

One sister, Virginia Bailey Linger of Weston, preceded him in death.

Mr. Bailey was a 1940 graduate of Weston High School. He entered the United States Navy March 9, 1944; he served on a destroyer in the European Campaign, particularly the Normandy Invasion, and was later dispatched to the Pacific Theatre to participate in the Battle of Okinawa and the final surrender on V-J Day. He was wounded in action at Okinawa and received the Purple Heart; he later received the Victory Medal. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1945, he worked extensively in the Weston area at Weston Glass and Louie Glass until he took a job in 1959 with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service at Franklin, where he spent 23 years helping and assisting the farmers and citizens of Pendleton and surrounding counties, retiring in 1982. After his retirement, he spent his time volunteering his services for community projects and enjoying muzzleloader gun making and shooting projects, carpentry, hunting, and trapping. He was a longtime active member of Franklin United Methodist Church, the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, the Order of the Purple Heart, and South Fork Kilbuck Rifles.
A funeral service will be held today, Wednesday, October 11, at 2 p.m., at Franklin United Methodist Church, with Rev. Walter Mullins officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Crest cemetery at Franklin. Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin is in charge of funeral arrangements.
