KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kathy Gwen Payne Hahn, 50, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Dothan, passed away Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.
Born April 21, 1955, at Oak Hill, Kathy was the daughter of Woodrow and Mary Lou (Payne) Payne of Dothan.
Kathy was a homemaker. She was also a graduate of Collins High School, Oak Hill.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. James K. Hahn; one son, Zack Hahn, and one daughter, Jess Hahn, both of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Deanna (Gerald) Lucas of Oak Hill; and one brother, Charlie (Becky) Payne of Mossy.
Visitation will be held from 12 noon until 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Lum Toney officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
Pallbearers will be Zack Hahn, Charlie Payne, Gerald Lucas, Craig Lucas, Richard Wark, and Pete Demaria.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the KU Endowment Unit 423901 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City, KS 66160.

Doris Aileen Harris
Doris Aileen Harris, 65, of 716 F St., Beckley, passed away Dec. 28, 2005, at the Medical Center in Hackensack, N.J., following an extended illness.
Born May 6, 1940, at Lewisburg, Doris was the daughter of the late A.D. Dickson and Edna Dickson.
Doris was a bookkeeper at Daughters of Miriam Nursing Home. She was a member of St. Matthew A.M.E., and was a member of the Senior Choir. She was also a member of the Community Action program.
Survivors include her husband George H. Harris; three sons, Vernon Dickson and wife Jean of Paterson, N.J., Timothy Dickson and wife Jackie of Winston Salem, N.C., and Walter Harris Jr. of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Jeanene Hammett of Clifton, N.J.; a brother, Horrace Dickson of East Rutherford, N.J.; one nephew and a host of nieces, other relatives, and friends.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Matthew A.M.E. Church, 103 Mills, with the Rev. Abner Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park.
Friends may call two hours prior to the services at the church.

Bennie Ray Hatfield
COAL MOUNTAIN — Bennie Ray Hatfield, 76, of Coal Mountain, passed away at Raleigh General Hospital, following a short illness.
Born Dec. 8, 1929, at Coal Mountain, he was the son of the late Epp and Mary Hatfield.
Mr. Hatfield was a member of the UMWA and a retired tipple foreman for Island Creek Coal Company. He worked a total of 46 years in the mining industry. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Mary Ellen Dalton Hatfield; a brother, Epp Hatfield Jr. and wife Gladyce; and an infant brother.
He is survived by his two daughters, Teresa Hatfield and husband Brendon Hatfield of Beckley and Connie Walls and husband Timmy Walls of Coal Mountain; four grandchildren, Craig Hatfield and wife Molly of Cincinnati, Ohio, Todd Hatfield and wife Kelli of Beckley, Shannon Walls and fiance Brian Drown of Huntington, and Lindsey Walls and fiance Ryan Spalding of Princeton; two great-grandchildren, Reece and Brooke Hatfield of Cincinnati, Ohio; and one sister-in-law, Sue Lester and husband Roger of Alderson.
Bennie will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends who love him very much.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Big Cub Creek Missionary Baptist Church at Coal Mountain, with the Rev. Glenn Hatfield and Randall Staton officiating. Burial will follow at the Hatfield cemetery in Coal Mountain.
Visitation will be 6 until 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Mounts Funeral Home in Gilbert.
Pallbearers will be Craig Hatfield, Todd Hatfield, Cameron Hatfield, Ronnie Hatfield, Ryan Spalding, and Brian Drown.

Brandon Michael Mangus
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Brandon Michael Mangus, 30, of 5819 Spring Run Drive, Columbus, Ohio, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at his home in the presence of his family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Aug. 16, 1975, in Beckley, he was the son of Sheila Mae Farley Mangus of Columbus, Ohio, and John T. Mangus II, also of Columbus, Ohio.
Brandon had recently been residing with his Aunt and Uncle Cathy and Brian Stone, who had been caring for him at their home in Daniels.
Brandon had been working in restaurant management until his illness. He graduated from Utica High School, Utica, Ohio, in 1993, and also spent two years at Marshall University. Brandon was an avid Ohio State football fan, NY Yankees baseball fan and, since living in Beckley, was becoming a WVU football fan. He loved to fish, especially when he was catching the most fish. Brandon was of the Christian faith and attended Terry Christian Church at Terry. Brandon was a very courageous and proud man who touched the lives of everyone he met. His wonderful personality and smile made him many, many friends.
Brandon was preceded in death by his grandparents, Coasten Farley, Betty Farley Gilmore, and Walter J. Gilmore.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his 6-year-old son, Koasten Michael W. Mangus, and Koasten’s mother, Cory Loughman, of Newark, Ohio; brothers, Ryan Mangus and his wife Audra and their children, Kennedi and Gavin of Newark, Ohio, and John T. Mangus III and fiancee Mechele of Columbus, Ohio; sister, April Spires of Columbus, Ohio; aunts and uncles, Cathy and Brian Stone, and their son, Brian Douglas of Daniels, Rachel and Bill Durbin of Huntington, and Ronnie and Melissa Hall of Beckley; and a very special friend and nurse, Melissa Nelson of Ohio.
Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Melton Mortuary in Beckley, with the Rev. Gene Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Beckley, where he will be laid to rest near his grandparents.
Visitation will be two hours prior to the service on Tuesday.
Pallbearers will be John T. Mangus II, John T. Mangus III, Ryan Mangus, Brian Stone, Ronnie Hall, Quentin Burke, and honorary pallbearer will be Brandon’s son, Koasten.

Doug Murdock
Doug Murdock, 27, passed away Dec. 28, 2005, following a tragic hunting accident.
Born May 1, 1978, he was the son of James and Vera Murdock of Glenfork.
Doug was a graduate of Pineville High School, and went to college and earned an associate’s degree at Davidson College. He was employed by Morton Metalcraft at Welcome North Carolina for eight years.
Mr. Murdock was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed the outdoors. He treasured being home with his son, and passing football with his nephew.
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Millie A Murdock.
Douglas was a loving husband, father, and son, and will be sadly missed by his wife, Christine, and son, Nathaniel Grant Murdock; his parents; a brother, James Murdock of Welcome, N.C.; a nephew, Seth; his maternal grandmother, Gladys Lilly of Glenfork; and a paternal grandfather, James Clifton Sr. of Stanaford.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with Pastor Randy Lusk and Rev. Gary Ford officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Chad Dale Patton, 31, of White Sulphur Springs, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005.

Phyllis Tuckwiller Proffitt
ATLANTA, Ga. — Phyllis Tuckwiller Proffitt, 81, of Atlanta, Ga., died on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, N.C., after a brave nine-year struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
She was born in Ronceverte on Aug. 17, 1924, to Eugene Anthony Tuckwiller and Margaret Phillips Tuckwiller.
She attended Lewisburg High School and Greenbrier College. She later attended the Medical College of Virginia, becoming a Junior Nurse in 1945. After World War II, she married Captain Julius Preston Proffitt Jr., and they moved to Charlottesville, Va., where he attended Law School. They later moved to Tazewell, Va., where Mrs. Proffitt was actively involved in the community, her church, and raising her family. Later in life they moved to Atlanta, where she continued her involvement with her church and community. She served as an elder, a deacon, circle moderator, and held numerous offices with Presbyterian Women. She was actively involved with Meals on Wheels and Elderberries. She was awarded a lifetime membership in Presbyterian Women. Mrs. Proffitt was also a talented artist and floral arranger. She especially liked the mountains and the verse, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.” (Psalm 121). She was a beloved wife, faithful, loving, and kind mother, and devoted grandmother. She befriended many people throughout her life. She will be greatly missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius Preston Proffitt Jr.; a sister, Elizabeth Peck of Spokane, Wash.; a sister, Helen Schaffer of Baton Rouge, La.; and a brother, Eugene A. Tuckwiller (Shine) of Lewisburg.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Robert Copeland of Greensboro, Ga.; her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Denise Proffitt of West Palm Beach, Fla.; her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Sean Brady of Phoenix, Ariz. Other survivors are her grandchildren, Alan Copeland of Livermore, Calif., Ellie Proffitt of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Chris Proffitt of Jefferson, Ga.; also triplet great-grandchildren, Morgan, Preston, and Chase. Her surviving siblings are Margaret Schmidt (Kita) and David Tuckwiller of Lewisburg, and Rachael Province of Charlotte, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
Her family thanks the wonderful, loving caregivers at Arbor Acres who devoted years to Mrs. Proffitt’s care.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Clifton Presbyterian Church in Maxwelton.
The family will receive visitors at the church one hour prior to the service.

Melissa Cara Toney Settle
FAYETTEVILLE — Melissa Cara Toney Settle, 40, of Rt. 2, Fayetteville, passed away Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, on Rt. 61, following an auto accident.
Born Dec. 7, 1965, at Oak Hill, Melissa was the daughter of Alfred F. Toney of Oak Hill, and the late Joann Foster Toney.
Melissa was a homemaker, and a member of the Page Baptist Church at Page.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Joann Foster Toney.
Survivors include her father, Alfred “ToJo” Toney of Oak Hill; her stepmother, Mary Toney of Oak Hill; her husband, Michael “Mike” Settle of Rt. 2, Fayetteville; a son, Brandon Settle at home; two brothers, Clint Toney of Rt. 2, Fayetteville, and Joseph F. Toney of Oak Hill; and her grandmother, Nine Lee Settle Foster of Rt. 2, Fayetteville.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Tyree Funeral Home Chapel of Oak Hill, with Delmas Wolfe officiating. Burial will follow in Settle’s Final Rest at Rt. 2, Fayetteville.

Virgil J. Stanley
OAK HILL — Virgil J. Stanley, 94, of Oak Hill, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at Hidden Valley Nursing Center, following a long illness.
Born July 9, 1911, at Winifred, the son of the late Milton and Anna Cooper Stanley.
Virgil was a member of Fellowship Memorial Baptist Church, a retired coal miner at Armco Steels Robinhood Mines in Boone County, and a member of U.M.W.A.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice; his second wife, Georgia; a son, Hugh; stepdaughter, Sue Vaught; three sisters, Lucille Dangerfield, Macil Childers, and Sarah Wyatt; and four brothers, Emil, Damon, Cledith, and Gene.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Zella Stanley; a daughter, Rita Pawlus and her husband Steve of Scarbro; a stepson, John Vaught of Hiram, Ohio; a sister, Mary Wyer of Wenatchee, Wash.; a brother, Bill of Sun City, Ariz.; grandchildren, Lisa Anderson and Greg Pawlus; stepgrandchildren, Grover, Clifton, and Donald Vaught; great-grandson, Hunter Anderson; stepgreat-grandchildren, Paul, Rachel, and Valori Vaught; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fellowship Memorial Baptist Church, Oak Hill, with Rev. Daniel Rice officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens cemetery, Madison.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. today at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel.
