SCARBRO — Walter D. Fitzpatrick, 66, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at his home.
Born July 30, 1939, at Dothan, he was the son of the late Edgar Jefferson and Beulah Pearl Buttrick Fitzpatrick.
Walter was a retired coal mining truck driver and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, James, Gene, Lacy, Donald, Larry and Carmen Fitzpatrick; and a sister, Delma Fitzpatrick.
Survivors include his wife, Rayola Altice Fitzpatrick; a brother, Clarence Fitzpatrick and wife, Julie, of Mossy; four sisters, Ruth King of Dothan, Chris Bryant and husband, Roger, of Ypsilanti, Mich., Kay Jaime and husband, Robert, of Prestonsburg, Ky., and Deloris Treadway and husband, Stanley, of Maysville, Ga., and several loving nieces and nephews.
As he requested, his body has been donated to the WVU Medical Center Human Gift Registry for polio and cancer research.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Eugene Ray Foster
Eugene Ray Foster, 80, of Beckley died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at his home after a short illness.
He was born June 30, 1925, in Beckley, the son of the late James G. Foster and Dora Taylor Foster.
He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and served in the 233rd Army Air Force Base Unit during World War II. Upon his return, he received a B.S. degree in business administration from West Virginia University. He also attended the West Virginia School of Banking and the American Institute of Banking.
Mr. Foster served as executive vice president of Beckley National Bank until his retirement in 1984. Mr. Foster was a member of First Baptist Church, Rotary International and was a 32nd degree Mason. Mr. Foster was a past president of the Beckley0Raleigh County YMCA, past exalted ruler of the Beckley Elks Lodge and past director of the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce. He was a former board member of the following organizations: Beckley National Bank, Mountain National Bank, Southern Bank Shares, Women’s Resource Center and Appalachian Regional Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, James Garfield Foster, Robert “Bob” Foster, George Edward “Ed” Foster and Joseph “Jack” Foster; and his sister Lucille Porter.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Wyatt Perdue Foster; his son Richard Foster and wife, Mary Ann, of Beckley; his stepson John Perdue and wife, Beverley, of Kingsport, Tenn.; his stepdaughter, Paula Poe and husband, J.D., of Kingsport; grandchildren Dylan Foster, Evan Foster, Greg Perdue, Melissa Simmons and David Poe; great-grandchildren, Erica Simmons, Jack Simmons and Lily Perdue; and his sister, Mary Virginia Lawrence of Winter Park, Fla.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with Dr. Philip Smith officiating. Friends may call noon until time of service Thursday at the mortuary.

SENECAVILLE, Ohio — Mary Ellen Adkins Pate, 67, formerly of Beckwith, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, at her home in Senecaville following a long illness.
Born Aug. 12, 1938, at Beckwith, she was the daughter of the late March Adkins and Sally Holly Miller.
Mrs. Pate was a member of Cotton Hill Missionary Baptist Church and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Phyllis Pate; and a sister, Nina Shockey.
Survivors include her husband, Robert E. Pate; four daughters, Vicky Ondrejovich and Debra Arnold, both of Columbia Station, Ohio, Teresa McGuire of LaGrange, Ohio, and Sheila Priddy of Grafton, Ohio; a son, Robert E. Pate Jr. and wife, Loretta, of Avon Lake, Ohio; a sister, Betty Johnson of Beaver; a half brother, Russell Miller; four half sisters, Alice Comer, Kathy Wilson, Joanne Quick and Janet Granc; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Howard Shrewsbury Jr.
ROCK — Howard Shrewsbury Jr., 72, of Wheeler Road, Rock, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at his home.
Born Dec. 8, 1933, at Herndon, he was the son of the late Howard Shrewsbury Sr. and Zida Basham Shrewsbury.
Mr. Shrewsbury was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving three years in Korea.
He received the Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal with one star, National Defense Service Medal, U.N. Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Sharpshooter Medal at Quantico, Va.
He was a retired coal miner, working more than 30 years, and was a member of the UMWA.
He was a member of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church at Rock.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors.
He was a loving husband and father and enjoyed spending time with his family.
He enjoyed walks with his two dogs, Hannah and Daisy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Cecil Sexton.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Sybil Ross Shrewsbury; two sons, Dennis Shrewsbury and his wife, Angela, of Rock and Jerry Shrewsbury and his wife, Cheryl, of Arista, Mont.; three stepsons, Clarence Sexton and his wife, Pamela, of Rock, Larry Sexton and his wife, Wilma, of Beeson and Roger Sexton and his fiancé, Dreama Robinette, of Carswell Hollow; four brothers, Charles Shrewsbury and his wife, Betty, and Ronnie Shrewsbury and his wife, Carolyn, all of Becknal Flats, Homer Shrewsbury of Lashmeet and Berlin Shrewsbury and his wife, Hirohma, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Dona Harmon and her husband, Sonny, of Egeria and Ramona Meadows and her husband, Claude, of Mount Airy, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home, Princeton, with Dr. David Dockery and the Rev. Billy Hill officiating.
Interment will follow in Howard Shrewsbury Jr. Family cemetery, Rock, where military rites will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Council.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jimmy Browning, Tim Blevins, Alvin Sadler, Brent Murphy, Curtis Murphy, Randall Shrewsbury, Charles Fleming and Willis Bishop. His three grandsons, Andrew Shrewsbury, Tim Sexton and David Sexton, will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Chester Smith Jr.
Chester Smith Jr. passed away Monday, Jan. 2, 2006.
Born March 27, 1934, he was the son of the late Chester and Lucy Smith Sr.
Chester was a graduate of Mark Twain High School, Class of 1953, and a member of Beckley Moose Lodge No. 1606.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Smith; and two sisters, Mary Frances Scott and Betty Puckett.
Those left to cherish his loving memory include a son, Chester Smith III “Chuckie” and wife, Kim, and their daughter, Brittany Jean Smith, of Louisville, Ky.; two brothers, James Smith and his wife, Dixie, of Miamisburg, Ohio, and Kenneth Smith and his wife, Sharon, of Ann Arbor, Mch.; and three sisters, Pauline Clemons of Sophia, Iris “Juanita” Hylton of Beckley and Doris Lilly of Cape Carteret, NC.
Service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with Pastor Mark Schrade officiating.
In keeping with Mr. Smith’s wishes, his body will be cremated and the ashes will be interred at a later date.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

MARFRANCE — Walter Oswald Walkup, 76, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea following a short illness.
Mr. Walkup was a wonderful father, stepfather and grandfather. He was retired from the U.S. Navy and the coal mines. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Clarence and Gladys Falkner Walkup, and a number of brothers and sisters. He was the last surviving member of his family.
Survivors include his wife, Mable Bragg Walkup; two sons, Clarence Walkup of Lake City, Fla., and Walter Lee Walkup of Mascoutah, Ill.; two stepsons, Elbert Lee Bragg Jr. of Marfrance and Delbert Bragg of Marfrance; a daughter, Kim Deitz of Clifton Forge, Va.; five stepdaughters, Linda Garcia of Nettie, Drema Trout of Marfrance, Suellen McClung of Statesville, N.C., Lorraine King of Statesville and Jewel Bragg of Nettie; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Houston Boothe officiating. Burial will follow in Orient Hill cemetery.
