ANSTED — Clyde Taylor Wood, 83, departed this life Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, at his residence following a short illness.
Mr. Wood was born June 12, 1922, at Victor, and was the son of the late Edwin Johnson and Martha Jane Ellis Wood. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Wood, on Aug. 13, 1989; a son, C. Thomas Wood; a sister, Sarah K. Legg; and three brothers, Edwin J. Wood, William Taft Wood and an infant brother.
Mr. Wood was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, a member of the Victor United Methodist Church at Victor and was a retired store manager at NAPA Auto Parts.
Surviving are two daughters, Martha Webb of Lakewood, Colo., and Marilyn Miller of Wilmington, N.C.; two sons, John Wood of Victor and Keith Wood of Boomer; three sisters, Annabelle Chapman of Hico, Mary Virginia Bennett and Joanne Sommerville, both of Newport News, Va.; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted with the Revs. Patrick Ferrell and Lon Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Restlawn Memory Gardens at Victor.

Evangeline Marilyn McPherson Young
Evangeline Marilyn McPherson Young passed away on Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, after a long illness at the age of 72.
She was born March 25, 1933, in Saint Francis, Maine, but had been a resident of Hinton since 1976.
She is survived by her husband, Ople H. (Sarge) Young of Hinton; eight children, a son, James R. Young and his wife, Pam, of Hinton, a daughter, Lisbet R. Huffman and her husband, Greg, of Jumping Branch; a son, Opie H. Young and his wife, Tabitha, of Lindside; a daughter, Robin L. Dun and her husband, John, of Jumping Branch; a daughter, Cally A. Bradshaw and her husband, Billy, of Marietta, Ga.; a son, Al Winslow of Saint Petersburg, Fla.; a daughter, Layne M. Chenier of Saint Petersburg, Fla., and a daughter, Margo E. Winslow of Victorville, Calif. She also has 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Special mention to grandsons, Justin M. Young of Hinton and Austin Dunn of Jumping Branch, and granddaughter, Kara Via of Lindside. She is also survived by her sisters, Freda Thibodeau Zue Pelletier, Phillis Jandreau and Esther Harvey, all of Maine, Jean Rush of Michigan, Betty Ristan of Virginia, Peggy Jeand-Heur of California and Mary Veltri of Clarksburg; and brothers, Lloyd, Eldon and Ewan McPherson, all of Maine.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors with the Revs. Arthur Bufogle and Kevin Culligan, OCD officiating.
Friends may call 1 p.m. until time of the service Thursday at the funeral parlors.

Cecil ‘Red’ Adkins
LOOKOUT — Cecil “Red” Adkins, 79, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley following a long illness.
Born July 29, 1926, he was the son of the late Lewis E. and Lilly Adkins.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Vernon Adkins.
He was a retired coal mine foreman for A&P/Cedar Coal Co. and loved camping with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Dreama Matheney Adkins; a daughter, Peggy Criddle and husband, Mike, of Franklinton, La.; two sons, Rick Adkins and wife, Karen, of Lookout and Tom Adkins and wife, Linda, of Cross Lanes; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brother and sisters, Gerald Adkins, Sissy Gray, Rosey Ramsey, Lucille Dix, Reva Martin, Ada Donalson, Olivene Bennett and Zela Armstrong.
Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted, with Pastor David Bennett and Pastor Curtis Whaley officiating. Entombment will follow in Chapel of Rest Mausoleum, Victor.

Ruby M. Garten
HINTON — Ruby M. Garten, 97, died Monday evening, Dec. 26, 2005, at Pinecrest Hospital in Beckley following a long illness.
Born March 30, 1908, at Bellepoint, she was the daughter of the late Grover and Amy Wikel Saunders.
Ms. Garten was a homemaker and was a member of Hinton Gospel Tabernacle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, O.P. Garten, in 1981; a daughter, Barbara Plumley, in 1987; an infant son; and two brothers, Orville and Claude Saunders.
Survivors include a son, Ron Garten and wife, Marlene, of Troutville, Va.; three daughters, Christine Hazelwood and husband, Fred, of Hagerstown, Md., Bonnie Bennett and husband, Lawrence, of Alderson and Retha Garten of O’Brien, Fla.; a brother, Donald Saunders and wife, Peggy, of Centerville, Ohio; two sisters, Eunice Garten of Oak Hill and Mary Brown of Middletown, Ohio; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with the Rev. Retha Garten officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Methodist Church cemetery on Zion Mountain near Hinton.

Bobby L. Harrison
Bobby L. Harrison, 52, of Lester, entered eternity on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005.
Born Sept. 13, 1953, at Holden, he was the son of the late James F. Harrison and Francis M. Harrison of Logan.
Bobby was a disabled American veteran who served his country proudly in the United States Army during the 1970s.
He attended school at Southern West Virginia Community College Surveying and Mine Engineering. He was a member of the DAV and the American Legion.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Randy Dale Harrison, and grandfather, Dave Bunch.
Those left to mourn in addition to his mother include his loving wife of 27 years, Patricia Harrison; children, David Harrison of Beckley, Brian Harrison and companion, Jennifer Workman, of Huntington and daughter Christine Isacsson and husband, Per Gunnar, of Fraziers Bottom; three very much loved grandchildren, River, Lake and Brooks; brother, James D. Harrison and wife, Brenda, of Logan; sister, Debbie Barnette and husband, Jerry, of Henlawson; half brother, Bret Harrison and wife, Gail, of Ohio; half sisters, Rhonda Hill and Gail Mahoney, both of Ohio; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Visitation and celebration of life will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Sophia.
In keeping with Bobby’s wishes, cremation will follow the visitation.

NEW RICHMOND — Nancy M. Long, 83, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005, at a Princeton care center following a long illness.
Born Feb. 7, 1922, in Harlan County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Dan and Mary Hampton.
Mrs. Long was a member of New Richmond Chapel.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Long, on April 22, 1999.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Osborne of New Richmond; a son, J.E. Lewallen of Harbor City, Calif.; five grandchildren, Raymond Osborne and his wife, Priscilla, of Rockview, Michael Lewallen and his wife, Teresa, of North Carolina, Timothy Lewallen of California, Sherry Osborne of New York and Jason Lewallen of California; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Service will be 1 p.m. today at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Larry England officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

SPANISHBURG — Daniel Stewart Milam, 28, of 159 Horner Lane, died Sunday Dec. 25, 2005, at his home.
Born Feb. 21, 1977, in Beckley, he was the son of John Marvin Milam of Princeton and Cathy Goodwin Hartley and her husband and Daniel’s stepfather, Clyde, of Spanishburg.
Daniel was a graduate of Mullens High School and a graduate of Concord College at Athens. He was last working as a GPS field technician for microDATA GIS. Daniel was a member of Basin Freewill Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a paternal grandfather, Bill Milam, and a maternal grandmother, Maggie Goodwin.
Survivors in addition to his parents and stepfather include his two sisters, Cynthia G. Mills and husband, Marvin, of Kegley and Olivia Milam of Spanishburg; paternal grandmother, Maude Milam of Princeton; maternal grandfather Luther S. Goodwin of Herndon Heights; nieces and nephew, Amelia Ellen “Emily” Mills, Allison Elizabeth Mills and Aaron Dean Mills; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.
