Jessie James Mullins, 94, passed away Monday, May 7, 2007.
Born Feb. 3, 1913, he was the son of the late Simmion J. and Annie Lane Mullins.
In addition to his parents, Jessie was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Marie Mullins. He was the last of a large family.
Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Mary F. Baldwin of Mount Hope and M. Louise Swann of Dunn, N.C.; two sons, James “Bud” Mullins of Whitelake, Mich., and Lloyd “Joe” Mullins of Lillington, N.C.; grandchildren, Lloyd Edward Baldwin, C. Marie Noble, Theresa Jernigan, Shirley Marshall, Tracey McKinney, Charles “Eddie” Stacey, Melissa Kitchen, Sebrina Swann, Jeff Flores, Jeremy Flores, Julie Moore and Jackson Mullins; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 11, at the funeral home.

James Eugene Williams
James Eugene Williams, 72, of Beckley, formerly of Artie, died Monday, May 7, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, after a long illness.
He was born Sept. 2, 1934, at Artie, a son of the late Ronda and Elphie H. Buzzard Williams.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Benny, Franklin and Manuel; and sisters, Bernice Williams, Gladys Dillon and Erma Norris.
He attended the Church of God, Artie.
He is survived by a sister, Dorena Williams and husband, Willie, of Clear Creek; brothers, Ross and Glen and wife, Margie, all of Artie, Darrell and wife, Yvonne, and Joe and wife, Patricia, all of Beckley; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Church of God, Artie, with the Rev. Jerry Lawrence officiating. Singer will be Judy Toney. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of the service Thursday at the church.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

James Edward Elder
OAK HILL — James Edward Elder, 82, of Oak Hill, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division.
He was born March 13, 1923, at Sanger, the son of the late William Edward and Hessie Carle Burgess Elder.
Mr. Elder was a retired serviceman for Sears and a former coal miner. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willie L. Elder and Bobby Lee Elder.
Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Gwinn of Fayetteville and Jeannie Smith of Oak Hill; a son, Randy Elder of Oak Hill; four brothers, Donald C. “Butch” Elder and Everette J. Elder, both of Oak Hill, and Lawrence G. Elder and Franklin D. Elder, both of Florida; two sisters, Charlotte I. Shuff and Betty A. Merritt, both of Oak Hill; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside service and committal service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with military graveside rites by VFW Post No. 3110, Oak Hill. The Rev. Bill Drennen will officiate. Burial will follow.
Louis Gonzalez
HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. — Louis Gonzalez, 92, formerly of Raleigh County and Florida, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, in a Hendersonville care center. He was 92 years of age.
He was the son of the late Camilo and Josephine Gonzalez.
Mr. Gonzalez left the coal mines after 32 years and began a new career as a diesel mechanic working in Ohio and Florida before retiring. He was an avid golfer and was credited with two holes-in-one. A member of First Baptist Church of Black Mountain, he was a man who loved his family and will be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.
Mr. Gonzalez is survived by his daughter, Narcia Ridenour and husband, Tommy, of Etowah, N.C.; grandson, Michael and wife, Michelle; great-grandchildren, Matthew and Micah; a sister, Louise Marron and husband, Mario, of Antioch, Calif.; and a foster brother, Tony Gonzalez of Antioch.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.

Naomi Frances Green
PINEVILLE — Naomi Frances Cline Green, 81, of Pineville, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C.
Born Aug. 22, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Jasper and Sally Musick Cline.
Mrs. Green was a homemaker and a member of Cook Memorial Baptist Church since 1946.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband Walter Green, on Aug. 1, 1972; and brothers, Carmel, Wardy and Aubrey Cline.
Survivors left to cherish her memory include her loving children, Larry Green and wife, Melinda, of Silver City, N.M., Karen Bailey and husband, Leon, of Pineville and Tim Green and wife, Karen, of Jesse.
Other survivors include her sisters, Alva Gunter of Beckley and Theda Collins of Russell, Ky.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Brian Green of Cincinnati, Ohio, Kevin Green of Bowling Green, Ohio, Amy Adams and husband, David, of Statesville, N.C., Christy Vance and husband, Ray, of Statesville and Cody Bailey of Pineville, as well as great-grandchildren, Jacob and Caleb Adams of Statesville.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Cook Memorial Baptist Church, Pineville, with Pastor Glen Kuhn officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and friends of the family.

Roy V. Groves
CANVAS — Roy V. Groves, 87, of Canvas, Nicholas County, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at his home.
Born Sept. 10, 1918, at Canvas, he was a son of the late Ray Vaughn and Etta Armstrong Groves.
Roy was a beloved husband, father and grandfather married to Mary Ault Groves for 60 years.
He was founder and operator of Groves Dairy Farm for more than 40 years and was affectionately known as the milkman. His business served five counties. Mr. Groves was also an owner of G&R Dairy, which produced milk products for the Nicholas County area.
Roy was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was named West Virginia Farmer of the Year in 1949. He served as a delegate from West Virginia on the United States Conservation Committee, and he served as the chairman of the board for Farmers and Merchants/One Valley Bank for 21 years. Roy also served on the board of directors for BB&T Bank in Summersville.
A member of Jordan Chapel United Methodist Church for 87 years, Roy served as the church’s treasurer for 37 years, and he was the treasurer for Deer Creek Wildlife Association. He was inducted into the West Virginia Turkey Hunter Hall of Fame in 1993.
He is survived by his loving wife of more than 60 years, Mary Ault Groves; daughter, Ruth Ann Walker and husband, Bill Elliott, of Glasgow; daughter, Barbara Jean Mattox and husband, Bill, of Arlington, Va.; and son, Vaughn R. Groves and wife, Mary, of Abingdon, Va. Roy is also survived by his sister, Bessie Adkins of Muddlety; and his grandchildren, Sara Walker Jones and husband, Owen, of St. Albans, Woodrow V. Walker and wife, Kristy, of Canvas, Courtney S. Groves, Meghan K. Groves, Benjamin C. Mattox, Alyssa V. Groves, Lauren S. Groves, Claire A. Mattox and Joshua V. Groves; and great-grandchildren, Jacob Lopetrone and Zachary, Andrew and Kelsi Walker. Also surviving are Roy’s “chosen children,” including David Hickman and wife, Jo Ann, Francis Bolyard Shaffer and David Bolyard; many nieces, nephews and cousins; his caregivers, Katie Underwood, Heather Davis and Dreama Vickers; and close family friend, Iris Chapman.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Jordan Chapel United Methodist Church, Canvas, with the Rev. Charles Wilson and the Rev. Harold Duskey officiating. Burial will follow at Groves cemetery, Canvas.
The family will receive friends one hour before service Saturday at the church.

Vernon Lacy Holt Sr.
Vernon Lacy Holt Sr., 62, of East Gulf, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at his home following a two-year battle with cancer.
Born at Lynchburg, Va., on April 17, 1943, he was the son of Vernon L. Holt of Rosedale, Md., and the late Hazel M. Jamerson Holt.
Mr. Holt served in the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was a retired steel worker and truck driver. He attended Weldon Bible Church at Allen Junction.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Louise Waters Holt; sons, Vernon Lacy Holt Jr. and wife, Kimberly, of Dundalk, Md., and Timothy Wayne Holt Sr. and wife, Rosellen, of East Gulf; daughters, Lou Ann Jackson of Bluff City, Tenn., and Theresa Ewing and husband, Raymond, of Dundalk; a brother, Timothy B. Holt of Essex, Md.; sisters Mary Ann Koski of Shrewsberry, Pa., Linda Kapajtic of Rosedale; seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor David Pollock officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
