James W. (J.W.) McCallister, 87, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Hinton, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond following a long illness.
Born Nov. 22, 1918 in Hinton, he was the son of the late James William and Nannie Dolan McCallister.
J.W. was retired from the C & O Railway Company. He was a member of the Sallisbury Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Va. He was also a member of the Hinton Elks Lodge #821, the Hinton Masonic Lodge #62, and the Beni Kedem Shrine in Charleston, W.Va.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Betty Lou McCallister; one son, Alex McCallister of Fredericksburg, Va.; one daughter, Tamara Ingram and husband Wayne of Chester, Va.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church of Hinton with Rev. Stewart McMurray officiating. Interment will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park in Hinton.

Thomas L. Rollins
KOPPERSTON — Thomas L. Rollins departed this life Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, in Carilion Roanoke Memorial hospital in Roanoke, Va., at the age of 84 years, four months, and seven days, following a short illness.
Born Aug. 10, 1921 at Oceana, he was the son of the late Hanley Bee Rollins and Maggie Cook Rollins.
Mr. Rollins served in the Army Air Corp during World War II for four years and was stationed in New Delhi, India. He was employed by Eastern Coal Association and Peabody Coal Company for 42 years, retiring in 1984 at the age of 63. Mr. Rollins was a member of Toneda Missionary Baptist Church where he served as deacon for many years. At the time of his death he was a resident of the Richfield Retirement Community in Salem, Va.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roger Dale Rollins; an infant brother, Ira Bee Rollins; two sisters, Linda Ruth Rollins and Clarice Brown.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mae Rollins, a resident of Richfield Retirement Community in Salem, Va.; four daughters, Cheryl Parris and her husband, Ben, of Atlanta, Ga., Karen Stewart and her husband, Tom, of Roanoke, Va., Connie Rollins of Orlando, Fla., and Sharon Rollins of Albuquerque, N.M.; two brothers, Eugene Rollins of Maryland and Lewis Jeff Rollins of Newark, Ohio; two sisters, Anilee Rollins of Beckley and Cora Shelly of Zonesville, Ohio; grandchildren, Warren D. McLaws and his wife, Rebecca, of Atlanta, Ga., Kara and Erin Stewart of Roanoke, Va., Andrea Brown and her husband, Rob, of Roanoke, Va., T.J. Stewart of Arlington, Texas, Travis Rollins of California, Amy Rollins of Florida, and Angela Rollins of Chandler, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Glin Brown of Roanoke, Va., Hunter and Ethan McLaws of Atlanta, Ga., and Trevor and Deanna Rollins of California; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
A celebration of Mr. Rollins’ life will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, at the Adam Toler Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James Hamrick officiating, and the Eric Lusk Singers providing the music. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.
Casketbearers will be the deacons of Toneda Missionary Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Franklin Lee Smedley Sr.
Franklin Lee Smedley Sr., 69, of Beckley, died Dec. 14, 2005, at Beckley; he was the son of the late Oscar J. Smedley and Tellarean Peters Smedley.
Mr. Smedley was a retired manager of an Auto Parts Store. He resided for many years in Winchester, Mass. He spent 14 years serving in the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his children, Franklin Lee Smedley Jr. of Lake Arrowhead, Calif., Robert Glen Smedley of Gloucester, Mass., Cynthia Langevin and husband, Robert, of Derry, N.H.; grandchildren, Jaime Dawn Langevin of Derry, N.H., Grant William Langevin of Derry, N.H., William Lee Smedley of Lake Arrowhead, Calif.; longtime friend, Judy Elmore of Beckley; brother, Harold Smedley of Texas; and a sister, Alma of Huntington.

OCEANA — Theresa Kay Walker, 45, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at her home.
Born Sept. 20, 1960, at Pineville, the daughter of the late Arnold Leroy and Beulah Gay Bailey Walker Sr.
Her brother, Arnold L. “Boe” Walker Jr.; grandparents, Otto Walker, Jenny Shrader Walker and the Rev. Roy A. Bailey, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include her grandmother, Pina Bailey of Oceana; a sister-in-law, Sherry Craft Walker of Sun Hill, W.Va.; a niece, Elizabeth Dawn Jones and husband, Larry II, of Cedar Creek, W.Va.; two nephews, Jason Lee Walker and Timothy Lee Walker, both of Cedar Creek, W.Va.; four uncles, Shelby Walker of Maryland, Landon Walker of Virginia, Weldon Walker of Florida, and Denvil Bailey and wife, Eva, of Virginia; two aunts, Diane Mathis and husband, John, of Oceana, and Jewell Acels of North Carolina; cousins, Tim Bailey and Terry Bailey of Oceana; a special friend, Patsy McQuire of North Carolina, and a host of other family and friends.

MOUNT HOPE — Joyce M. Breeden-Adkins, 56, passed away Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, after an extended illness.
Born Nov. 21, 1948, at Eccles, she was the daughter of the late Clark Adkins and Laura Adkins.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by two children, Marie Showalter and William Showalter; three brothers, Herbert Adkins, Charles W. Adkins, and Estel Adkins; three sisters, Lorene M. Marciniak, Freda M. Cook and Wanda C. Adkins; and an infant brother.
Those left to cherish her memory are her three daughters, Lisa L. Higginbotham and husband, Charles, of Oak Hill, Shawn K. Showalter and husband, David, of Ohio, and Pamela D. Lena M. Grose, 84, of Beckley, passed on to a better life on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Jimmy Adamos of Beckley after a long illness.
Born Feb. 14, 1921, in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Margaret Cook Cobb.
Mrs. Gorse was a homemaker, a lifelong resident of Raleigh County and was the last surviving member of her brothers’ and sisters’ family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Solomon Earl Grose; and a son, Eules “Buddy” Cobb.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Adamos and her husband, Jimmy, of Beckley; two sons, Larry and Eugene Grose, both of Beckley; two special grandchildren, Shawn Long of Monterey, Calif., and his children, Zackary and Alexandra, Jamie Long of Goldsboro, N.C., and his children, Cayden and Brooke; two additional grandchildren; special friend, Holly Garner; and many nieces and nephews.
Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum B, with the Rev. Mona Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Family members will serve as pallbearers.
There will be no public visitation.
