Beatrice Hill Sumpter
OAK HILL — Beatrice Hill Sumpter, 83, of Oak Hill, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division.
She was born Feb. 23, 1923, in Clintwood, Va., the daughter of the late Edward and Viola Rose Hill.
Mrs. Sumpter was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Sumpter; three brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include four sons, Larry Sumpter and wife, Darlene, of Oak Hill, Jerry Sumpter and wife, Verna, of Beckley, Terry Sumpter and wife, Sharon, of Sanford, N.C., and Danny Sumpter and wife, Vicki, of Oak Hill; two daughters, Patricia Shepperd and husband, Fred, of Beckley and Sandra Bryant and husband, James, of Oak Hill; a sister, Aima McLaughlin of Harrison, Mich.; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, July 3, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Jessie Parker officiating. Burial will be at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.
Gene Austin Tolliver
Gene Austin Tolliver, 78, of Fairdale, died Thursday, June 29, 2006, at his home.
Born at Meadow Creek on March 5, 1928, he was the son of the late Ellis Morris Tolliver and Ada Mae Garten Tolliver.
Mr. Tolliver was a U.S. Navy veteran, a member of the UMWA, a retired coal miner and a born-again Christian.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Morris Tolliver.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Graham Shirley Tolliver; daughters, Regina Lobach and husband, Dave, of Palm Bay, Fla., Terri Justice and husband, Mike, of Beckley and Barbara Bohlin and husband, John, of Palm Bay; stepsons, Jonathan Shirley and wife, Gwin, of Orlando, Fla., Philip Shirley and wife, Mary Lou, of Sarasota, Fla., and James Shirley of Sarasota; sisters, Freda Mae Fowler and husband, Elmer, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Betty Sturgill of Louisville, Ky.; grandchildren, Michelle Nelson, Angela Starr, Ashley Justice, Brian Justice, Madison Bohlin, Victoria Bohlin, Savannah Bohlin, Hannah Shirley, Katelynn Shirley, Scott Shirley, Justin Shirley, Tina Dunn and husband, Brian, and Nicole Hardesty and husband, Brian; and eight great-grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at Rose & Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Jerry Brooks officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Visitation will be one hour before service Sunday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Brian Justice, Scott Shirley, Justin Shirley, Keith Loundmon, Benny Sturgill, Gary Ayers and Jim Sweeney.

Virginia Margaret Waikem
Virginia Margaret Waikem, of Beckley, formerly of Canton, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2006, in a Beckley hospital. She was in her 98th year.
Born Dec. 1, 1907, at Belt Mary, Lebanon, she was the daughter of the Elias and Mary Kriker Waikem.
A longtime resident of Canton, she was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and a retired agent for the Internal Revenue Service with 34 years of service. For the past 10 years, she made her home with her daughter, Rosemarie Corey, and husband Ed of Beckley. While in Beckley, she was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church. She was a member of the Ladies of St. Francis, the Red Hat Society and the NARFE Society.
Margaret was blessed with a long and active life. She and her daughter Rose were always out and about in Beckley. She lived life to the fullest.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Corey; and three brothers, George, Joe and Mike Waikem.
In addition to her daughter and son-in-law, she is survived by a sister, Eugenia Waikem of Wildmar, Calif.; and two grandsons, Mark Corey and Steven Corey.
Funeral liturgy was 10 a.m. Friday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Canton, with Monsignor John C. Finnegan as celebrant. Rite of committal followed at St. Peter’s cemetery.
Friends called 6 to 8 p.m. at Rossi’s Funeral Home, Canton, with a parish prayer service at 6:45 p.m.

ELYRIA, Ohio — Carol F. White (nee Surratt), 62, of Elyria, passed away Thursday, June 29, 2006, at her residence following a long illness.
She was born in Beckley and had lived in Elyria since 1998.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, James R. Sr.; two sons, James R. Jr. (Dianne) of Elyria and David M. of Rome, N.Y.; two daughters, Pamela Dockery (Michael) of Ocala, Fla., and Karen Asbury (Michael) of Elyria; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth Michael and Cecil Peters; and her sister, Agnes Pierce.

GLEN JEAN — Violet Irene Adkins, 82, passed away Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at Hilltop Center.
Born April 24, 1923, at Vanwood, she was the daughter of the late Harry Shaver and Clara Cox Shaver.
Violet was preceded in death by three sons, Roland, Lee and Junior Adkins; a son-in-law, William Smith; two great-great-granddaughters, Trinity Smith and Anna Marie Mendiola; and her husband, Wallace Adkins, in 1972.
Violet loved sewing and quilting for her family and received great joy canning fruit and vegetables, and took great pride in taking care of her home and family.
Those left to cherish her memory are five sons, Richard Adkins of Glen Jean, Bobby Adkins and wife, Freda, of Prudence, Bill Adkins and wife, Mary, of Glen Jean, Phillip Adkins of Glen Jean and Romie Adkins and wife, Angie, of Glen Jean; five daughters, Patty Smith of Scarbro, Vivian Adkins and husband, Richard, of Mossy, Carylon Tincher and husband, Jim, of Oak Hill, Connie Wood and her husband, Dean, of Glen Jean and Donna Cottle and husband, Kenny, of Harvey; a brother, Sidney Shaver of Oak Hill; a sister, Myra Lou Gibson of Page; special nephew, Frankie Adkins and wife, Delores, of Vermillion, Ohio; 19 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Robert Burnett officiating. Burial will follow in Hilltop Union cemetery.

Lois Haney Crouse, 80, of Alderson and Baileysville, passed away Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, in McDowell Continuous Care, Gary, following a long illness.
Born Aug. 28, 1925, in Pike County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Ollie Powers Haney.
Mrs. Crouse was a member of Alderson Baptist Church. She was a retired cook from the Monroe County school system. She enjoyed sewing, singing in the church choir and spoiling her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Levi Crouse; a son, David Crouse; a brother, John Haney; and four sisters, Helen Shannon, Bernice Young, Ollie Matthews and Edna Haney.
