Cubby F.D. Barber

OCEANA — Cubby F.D. Barber departed this life Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at the age of 40 years, 10 months and 20 days at his home following complications from a stroke.

Born May 30, 1965, he was the son of Franklin Dewey and Janet Juanita Lester Barber of Lillydale.

Cubby loved NASCAR and driving trucks. He was a 1984 graduate of Oceana High School, owner of B.J. Leasing Co. and a member of the Shriners. Cubby was known for his saying, “Come in, Come on.” He was a wonderful father and brother. He was loved by all who knew him and will be dearly missed.

Cubby was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Hugh and Lettie Barber; and his maternal grandparents, Bill and Louise Lester.

Those left to cherish his memory are his parents, Franklin Dewey and Janet Barber of Lillydale; a son, Jonathan David Barber of Oceana; a daughter, Kayla Nichole Barber of Oceana; three sisters, Beckie Mullens and her husband, Steve, of Pineville, Sandie Barber of Crab Orchard and Kellie Cook and her husband, Todd, of Hanover; two nieces, Valerie Weaver and Jessica Mullens, and a nephew, Jacob Mullens, all of Pineville; his companion, Sandra Amburgey of Oceana; and several dear family and friends.

A celebration of Cubby’s life will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. J.L. Riffe officiating and music provided by the Rev. Erwin Gregory. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Casketbearers will be the members of the Oceana Fire Department.

Family will receive friends 11 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.

Service entrusted to the Adam Toler Memorial Funeral Home, Oceana.

Susan Lucy Bragg

Susan Lucy Bragg, 94, of Sullivan, died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

Born June 4, 1911, at Sullivan, she was the daughter of the late James Everett Richmond and Sally Beth Jones Richmond.

Mrs. Bragg was a homemaker. She was of the Protestant faith and a born-again Christian. She dearly loved her children and grandchildren. She lived in the Sullivan area most of her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Bragg, four sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include a son, Ray Bragg and wife, Debbie, of Coal City; daughters, Helen West of Coal City, Eva Bragg at home and Eresell Troxell of Westminster, Md.; brothers, Fred Richmond of Glen Morgan and Charlie Richmond of Crab Orchard; sister, Myrtle Lamb of Crab Orchard; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Clarence Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Tilden cemetery, Sullivan.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Grandsons and family members will serve as pallbearers.

Lucille Ellen Brown

Lucille Ellen Brown, 86, of Stanaford, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006.

She was born Jan. 17, 1920, in Stanaford and was the daughter of the late Henry and Pearl Smith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Brown; daughter-in-law, Donna Brown; and three brothers, Wesley Smith, Carl Smith and Lowell Smith.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Brown of Beckley and William and wife, Carla Brown, of Stanaford; a brother, Robert Smith of Oak Hill; two sisters, Wilda Burdette of Maryland and Evelyn Isengogle of North Carolina; three grandchildren, B.J. Brown and wife, Sharon, of Beckley, Gary Brown of Beckley and Kelly Dyke and husband, Mike, of Beckley; five great-grandchildren, LaTrisha Brown of Beckley, Katelyn, Madison and Lauren Dyke, all of Beckley, and Justin and Andrea Brown, both of Hickory, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of Packs Branch Baptist Church in Mount Hope.

Service for Mrs. Brown will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 22, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with Pastor Bill Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, is in charge of arrangements.

Danny Coffman, 67, of Terry, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2006.

LANCASTER, Ky. — Diana Kay Day, 50, of Lancaster, formerly of Fayetteville, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, in Lancaster.

PRINCETON — Arlene Hester, 90, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006.

Service will be 7:30 p.m. today at Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home, Princeton. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton. Friends and family attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Friends may call 6 p.m. until time of service today at the funeral home.

Hazel Pearl Keffer, 79, of Beckley, died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Steven K. Lafon

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Steven K. Lafon, 50, of Knoxville, died Monday, April 17, 2006, at his home following a short illness.

Born Feb. 1, 1956, in Beckley, he was the son of Delila Waddell Lafon of Beckley and the late Garland E. Lafon.

Steven was a 1974 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and was a 1978 graduate of Marshall University. He was retired as a vice president of Conoco in Houston, Texas, and was recently employed by Wells Fargo in Beckley.

Besides his mother, survivors include a daughter, Leslie Ann Lafon, and a son, Steven K. Lafon II, of Houston; two sisters, Linda Brian and her husband, David, of Dallas, Texas, and Phyllis Winnett and her husband, Dan, of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Larry E. Lafon of Knoxville; nephews, Bryan Hopkins and his wife, Sherry, Joel Lafon and Andrew Brian; his great-nephew, Holden Hopkins; and his nieces, Paige and Hallie Lafon and Kristin Brian.

Service will be 2:30 p.m. today at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Craig Stevens and the Rev. Mark Schrade officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 1 p.m. until time of service today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Almond, Larry Misiti, Ed Ford, Ox Thompson, Evan Thurman, Jerry McKinney and Rocky McKinney.

Robert Nelson Lester

ANNANDALE, Va. — Robert Nelson Lester, 65, formerly of Wyoming County, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2006, in Sleepy Hollow Manor following a long illness.

Jacob Alexander Lewis

Jacob Alexander Lewis, 11-month-old infant son of Michael Ballard and Amanda Lewis, became an angel Tuesday, April 18, 2006. Jacob entered this life April 23, 2005, in Beckley.

Jacob was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, James Ballard.

Those left to cherish his memory include his parents, Amanda Lewis of Beckley and Michael Ballard of Denver, N.C.; brothers, Taylor Lewis and Ira Lewis; half brother, Aaron Ballard; grandparents, Judy Ballard of Denver, N.C., and Clayton and Barbara Lewis of Beckley; uncles, Timmy Logan and wife, Sherry, Ricky Logan and wife, Lisa, Jerry Morris and wife, Michelle, and Donny Stacy, all of Mississippi; and an aunt, Tammy Dahlem and husband, Doug, of Mississippi.

Service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Calloway Heights Baptist Church, Beckley, with Pastor Bill Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley.

Phillip E. Massey

BROOK PARK, Ohio — Phillip E. Massey, 65, formerly of Oak Hill, passed away Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Medina Hospital after a long illness.

Born April 14, 1941, he was the son of the late Delbert F. and Ruby E. (nee Toney) Massey.

Phillip was a self-employed mechanic in Elyria, Ohio.

He was the loving companion of the late Marge Turner.

He was the loving father of Rita Parsons (Ed), Jeanie Roat (Dodie) and Phillip F. Massey; dear stepfather of Christine Turner; loving grandfather of Phillip Gavin Parsons and stepgrandfather of Eddie Parsons; dear brother of Cora West, Dreama Bartol, Linda Long, Leona Massie, Brenda Lewis, Tim Massey and the late Betty Hochberg and twin sister Beulah Wood.

Cremation was done by Busch Crematory.

Memorials may forwarded to your charity of choice.

Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at Park Heights Baptist Church, 16189 Sheldon Road, Middleburg Heights, Ohio.

There will be no public visitation.

Dewey L. McKinney

PINEVILLE — Dewey L. McKinney, 87, was called home Wednesday, April 19, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville. Friends may call noon until time of service Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Gideons International, Wyoming Camp, P.O. Box 436, Brenton, WV 24818.

Evelyn M. McMillen

YORKTOWN, Va. — Evelyn M. McMillen, 74, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2006.

Evelyn was born in Hotchkiss and was a longtime resident of Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Herbert and Beulah Birchfield. She was a 1950 graduate of Sophia High School and was salutatorian of her class. Evelyn worked for Bank of Warwick since 1967, and medically retired from Signet Bank in the late 1980s. She was a member of Yorkminster Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and attended nursery. She will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend.

Evelyn is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Russell L. McMillen Sr.; her sons, Russell Jr. and his wife, Vivian, of Yorktown, and Gregory and Diana and her grandson, Dwayne, of Gloucester, Va.; three grandchildren; sisters, Mable Snuffer of Lester and Jewell Light and her husband, Kenneth, of Marion, Va.; a brother, Fred Birchfield and his wife, Judy, of Cross Lanes; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at Yorkminster Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Courtney Cromie and Feild and Jenny Russell officiating.

The family will receive friends 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, Va.

Interment will be private in Peninsula Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Yorkminster Building Fund, 6218 George Washington Highway, Yorktown, VA 23692.

The McMillen family would like to thank the nursing staff of Riverside Regional Medical Center for their tender care for Evelyn and her family.
