Thomas William Evans, 96, of 215 Westmoreland St., Beckley, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a long illness.

Leona H. Gilmore
On Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, Leona H. Gilmore of Beckley, formerly of Sophia and McAlpin, died in a Beckley care center following a long illness. She was in her 95th year.
Born Leona Harriet McGhee on May 25, 1911, in Mincar, Fayette County, she was the second of nine children born to the late Joe and Hallie Ann Ellis McGhee.
Mrs. Gilmore was a member of United Methodist Temple. She was also a member of the Raleigh County Historical Society, Women of the Moose, the West Virginia Federation of the Blind and AARP.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Gilmore, in 1966; four brothers: Frank, Hubert, Joe and William McGhee; and three sisters, Lena Marczilla, Erma Sammons and Ella Likins.
She was the dear sister of Margaret Midkiff of Rupert. Several nephews and nieces also survive.
Service will be noon Friday, Jan. 12, at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Tommy Waddell officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour before service Friday.

BIM — Cynthia Lee Horsman, 49, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at home.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Green and Mr. and Mrs. James H. Davis.
She was a certified senior teller at BB&T in Danville.
She leaves behind her husband, Ray Horsman; a son, Jeremy Horsman of Bim; a daughter and son-in-law, Cayce and Jamie Cook of Bim; parents, Kenneth and Pat Davis of Beckley; and a sister and brother-in-law, Beth and Gene Miller and their family of Beckley. She also leaves behind her Christian family, Cazy FWB Church and a host of friends and family.
Always remember that Cindy wanted only happy tears shed for her; and to all Christians, we will see her again on the other side. To all veterans, remember that you held a special place in her heart.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Cazy FWB Church with the Rev. Tom Price, the Rev. Shelly Bowling, the Rev. Butch Brogan and the Rev. Scottie Elswick officiating. Singers will be By Grace and Melissa Rakes. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison.

Danny Miller
SAULSVILLE — Danny Miller, 55, passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, in Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, following a long illness.
Born April 7, 1951, in Pineville, he was the son of Herbert H. Miller of Brenton and the late Geraldine Shook Miller.
Danny attended Brenton Church of God. He was a member of the UMWA and the NRA.
Danny enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors.
In addition to his father, survivors include his wife, Deborah Kennedy Miller; a son, Brandon Miller and his wife, Gladys Marie, of Clear Fork; a daughter, Emily Miller Nelson and her husband, Jeremiah, of St. Albans; three sisters, Deborah Joyce Howard of Wolf Pen, Diane Denise Cook of Ramey Addition and Rebecca Jane Hylton of Glover; and a granddaughter, Jacqulin Marie Miller of Clear Fork.
Visitation will be noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville. Entombment will be at Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Matheny. Private funeral service will be held.

SUN CITY, Fla. — Fred Minks, 71, died Dec. 14, 2006.
Fred was the sister of Drema (Ira) Richmond of Beckley.
Service was Dec. 18, 2006, in Sun City.
Edgar F. Nunn
Edgar F. Nunn, 86, of Fairdale, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, in a local hospital after a long illness.
Born Jan. 5, 1921, at Bland, Va., he was the son of the late Daily and Hattie Jane Farmer.
Mr. Nunn was owner/operator of Nunn Lumber Co., operating his own logging business for many years, and also retired from Ellis Creek Coal Co. as a foreman. He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie Opal Nunn, on Nov. 17, 1998, whom he married on Aug. 21, 1941. He was also preceded in death by a son, James Nunn; a daughter, Gail Nunn; two sisters, Martha and Ruby; and a brother, Charles Nunn. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are his two sons, Mark Nunn and his wife, Melva, of Stover and Tim Nunn and his wife, Vie, of White Sulphur Springs; his five daughters, Irene Cook and her husband, Darrell, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Opal Jane Nunn of Sanadia, Texas, Nancy Walkup and her husband, Jimmy, of Beckley, Marilyn Wade of Clemmons, N.C., and Gay Nunn of Mount Hope; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Jerry Cantley officiating. Burial will follow in Calfee cemetery, Mount Tabor.
Friends may call one hour before service Friday at the funeral home.

Billy R. Short Jr.
Billy R. Short Jr., 54, of Beckley died Sunday, Jan 7, 2007.
Born June 17, 1952, in Warren, Ohio, he was the son of Billy Short Sr. and Clarice Qualls Short.
He was a Vietnam era veteran and a plumber. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and NASCAR.
Billy was preceded in death by his sister, Drema Short Bowman, and infant sister, Tammy.
Those left to cherish his memory in addition to his parents are a daughter, Holly Short of South Carolina; a brother, Victor Short of Beckley, with whom he resided; and sisters, Jackie Short of Cleveland, N.C., and Mary Canaday and husband, Dennis, of Beckley. Also missing his presence are many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
In keeping with his wishes, Mr. Short was cremated and there will be no service.

JUMPING BRANCH — Joyce A. Crawford, 64, died at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at the Charleston Area Medical Center following a long illness.
Born May 23, 1942, at Oswald, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Zada Bowles Morrison.
She was a member of the Hinton Gospel Tabernacle and was the former owner of Bob’s Produce and Deli in Hinton and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by one brother, David Arnold Morrison; one half brother, Donald Ruff; and one half sister, Arlena McCoy.
She is survived by one daughter, Lisa Deeds and husband, Wellington, of Jumping Branch, one son, Robert Ayers and wife, Ann, of Hinton, four brothers; Allen Morrison and wife, Annie, of Richmond, Va., Phillip Morrison and wife, Eva, of Dublin, Va., Joe Morrison and wife, Charlotte, of Hinton and Lonnie Morrison and wife, Virginia, of Hinton, two half sisters; Beth Fitzpatrick of Newport News, Va., and Martha Angle of Coal City, three grandchildren; Bobby Ayers, Haley Deeds and Brandon Ayers; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton with Pastor Lawrence Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Ward cemetery on Chestnut Mountain.
Friends may call at the funeral parlors 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Her family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

James Leonard ‘J.L.’ Duncan
WYOMING — James Leonard “J.L.” Duncan, 83, of Wyoming, passed away Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, surrounded by his family and the loving staff of Wyoming Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, New Richmond.
Born Aug. 8, 1923, in North Carolina, he was the son of the late Perry and Lena Nicholson Duncan.
Mr. Duncan was a member of Big Cub Missionary Baptist Church and also attended Wyoming United Methodist Church. J.L. was a World War II Army veteran and was retired from Island Creek Coal Company at Coal Mountain.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Florence; three brothers, Robert, Kermit and Herman; and his first wife, Ruby Duncan.
Survivors include his wife, Zola Carter Duncan; a son, James Duncan Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Dandridge, Tenn.; a brother, Thurman Duncan of South Carolina; two stepdaughters, Phyllis New and her husband, Herbert, of Wyoming, and Carolyn Stewart and her husband, William “Bill,” of Wyoming; a granddaughter, Kelly Duncan; two stepgranddaughters, Ashley Stewart of Wyoming and her fiancé, Joshua Harper, and Sara New of Wyoming; and a great-grandson, Tyler White.
Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Big Cub Missionary Baptist Church, Coal Mountain, with the Revs. Glen Hatfield, Gerald Roberts and Melissa White officiating. Burial will follow in Hatfield Community cemetery, Coal Mountain.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
