William J. Hutchison

On Sunday, July 16, 2006, William J. Hutchison went to see his Lord and Savior at the University of Virginia Medical Center following an illness of 3 months. He was 79 years of age.

Born William Joseph Hutchison at Clifton Forge, Virginia on March 25, 1927, he was the son of the late Joseph Maxwell and Myoma “Mickey” Campbell Hutchison.

William spent his childhood in Beckley, graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School.

After high school, he entered the US Coast Guard during WWII, enlisting as an apprenticed seaman. He was a recipient of the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon and the WWII Victory Medal. Later he would serve in the US Marine Corps entering in 1950, serving during the Korean Conflict, where he was a recipient of the UN Service Ribbon, Korean Service Ribbon and the Good Conduct Ribbon.

After his stints in service, he was employed by Beckley Newspapers for a number of years. Mr. Hutchison then began a career in the banking industry with Raleigh County National Bank, retiring from Beckley National Bank (CHASE) as a trust officer. He had 25 years in the industry.

A devoted member of the Piney View Bible Church, he was very active in church affairs, having been a trustee, Sunday school teacher and superintendent. He had also been a song leader for the church. When he had time he enjoyed hunting.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his little granddaughter, Haley Brianne Hutchison and a brother Howard Lee Hutchison.

He was the loving husband of Joan Pfadt Hutchison for 52 years; the beloved father of Joanna Bryant and her husband Dan of Bradley; Kim Beckett and her husband Joey of Shady Spring; and Michelle Lucas and her husband Jeff of Beckley; the dear grandfather of 11 grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Kendra Davis and her husband James of Arizona and 2 special nephews, Gregory and Steven Hutchison.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Cecil Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary and one hour prior to services on Thursday.

Pallbearers will be: Greg and Steve Hutchison, Mark Arthur, Doug Patton, Bill Basham, Roger Taylor, Denvil Blake and Harold Arthur.

Sherman Lovejoy Jr.

MT. NEBO — Sherman Lovejoy Jr., 78, died Monday morning, July 17, 2006, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Jimmy E. Maynor

Jimmy E. Maynor, 63, of Beckley passed away Saturday, July 15, 2006.

Born October 9, 1942 at Clear Creek; he was the son of the late James Easton Maynor and the late Zettie Dorothy Lilly Maynor.

In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Jarrell and a nephew, Keith L. Jarrell.

He was disabled and loved everyone including little children. He never complained about anything. We loved him very much and will miss him. We will all be together in heaven.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Pam of Ohio; two brothers, Paul F. Maynor and wife, Goldie of Sandlick and Ronald K. Maynor and wife, Audrey of Clear Creek; five sisters, Billie Jo Burgess of Tennessee, Anna Lou Wriston and husband, Lowell of Scarbro, Flossie Dillon and husband, Dennis of Clear Creek, Dorothy Price and husband, Harold of Hinton, and Vickie Bailey and husband, Curtis of Streetsboro, OH; one uncle, Everett Lilly and wife, JoAnn of Clear Creek; one aunt, Flossie Williams of Clear Creek; two grandchildren; 14 nephews; and seven nieces.

Services will be 12 o’clock noon Friday, July 21, 2006 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley with Pastor Loretta Taylor officiating with Sandra Taylor assisting. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family from 10 a.m. until time of the service Friday at the funeral home.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley is in charge of the arrangements.

Thomas Gordon McDaniel

CRAWLEY — Thomas Gordon McDaniel, 65, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a long illness.

Born June 27, 1941, at Quinwood, WV, he was the son of the late Henry and Nerma Arthur McDaniel.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger Paul McDaniel and Jackie Lane McDaniel.

Mr. McDaniel was a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA District No. 29.

Gordon was a member of Sunrise United Methodist Church at Clintonville.

Survivors include his wife, Janet E. Martin McDaniel of Crawley; two daughters, Debra K. (Debbie) Viers and husband, Rick, of Lewisburg, and Lisa A. Lockhart and husband, Kerry, of Clintonville; a son, Gary R. McDaniel and companion, Kaye Lowry, of Crawley; a sister, Nora Lee Martin and husband, Burk, of Quinwood; four grandchildren, Julie R. McDaniel of Lancaster, Ohio, Ciera McDaniel and Brooklyn McDaniel, both of Mt. Jackson, Va., and Thomas L. Lockhart of Clntonville.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Sunrise United Methodist Church, Clintonville, with the Rev. Paul Thompson, the Rev. Verlin Butcher, and the Rev. Roy Gwinn officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The McDaniel family would like to especially thank all the friends and family for their cards, visits, and prayers during his long illness.

Nora Elizabeth Bryant Scites

Nora Elizabeth Bryant Scites, 98, formerly of 106 Maple Ave., Beckley, passed away on Friday, July 14, 2006, at the Hidden Valley Nursing Home in Oak Hill, where she had been a resident for eight years.

Mrs. Scites was born Sept. 29, 1907, at Matewan. She worked for many years at the Logan Mercantile Store before moving to Beckley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawton Scites of Logan; her parents, William Estell Bryant and Eliza Ellen Brammer Bryant of Beckley; three sisters, Irene Carman of Beckley, Minnie Elliott of Glasgow, and Athelene Spears of Logan.

She is survived by her only son, William E. Bryant of Hampton, Va.; two grandsons, Samuel E. Bryant, of Hampton, and William L. Bryant of Chicago, Ill.; four great-grandchildren, Kelly M. Wilson of Hampton, Kevin M. Bryant of Chesapeake, Va., Christopher W. Bryant of Chicago, Ill., and Lauren A. Bryant of San Antonio, Texas; and three great-great-grandchildren, Breanna M. Wilson, Lauren N. Wilson, and Dylan M. Wilson of Hampton.

There will be a small private service for immediate family only.

The family would like to especially thank the staff at Hidden Valley Nursing Home for the yeas of loving treatment and special care provided to the matriarch of our family.

Leonard Ray Estep Sr.

MOOREFIELD — Leonard Ray Estep Sr., 74, passed this life on Sunday, June 25, 2006.

Service will be 11 a.m. today at Elmore Funeral Home, 217 Winchester Ave., Moorefield. The family received friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Linda G. Ferrell

Linda G. Ferrell died June 21, 2006.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at her home, 12950 SW 64th Lane, Ocala, Fla. Final memorial service will be 5 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at Baisden Community Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made in Linda’s honor to James D. Ferrell, P.O. Box 447, Gilbert, WV 25621. Contributions received will be distributed to Linda’s favorite charities by the family.

Waneta M. Handy

PETERSTOWN — Waneta M. Handy, 74, died Tuesday, June 27, 2006.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sheron Jean Heath

STUARTS DRAFT, Va. — Sheron Jean Heath, 50, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 27, 2006, surrounded by her loved ones in her home at 1684 White Hill Road, Stuarts Draft, after a long battle with cancer.

She was born in North Carolina, the daughter of Eugene and Christine (Spivey) Lindsey.

Survivors include her mother, Christine Lindsey of Staunton, Va.; her husband, Kyle Heath; two sons, Kyle Heath Jr. and his wife, Becky, and Luke Heath and his wife, Heather; two grandchildren, Luke Jr. and Hailey Heath; and two stepgrandchildren, Kaleb and Brody Lunsford, all of Stuarts Draft.

Sheron was a homemaker and graduated from high school in Norfolk, Va. She was known for her talent in floral design. She loved fellowship with her family and friends; she was a born-again Christian and was very active in serving the Lord through Jesus Christ.

Memorial service will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at Calvary United Methodist Church, Stuarts Draft, with Ministers David Ladd, Bennie Byler, Ken Overdorf and Dennis Bradley officiating.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 1, at Reynolds Funeral Service, Stuarts Draft.

All donations of sympathy can be given to AMC Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O. Box 215, Fishersville, VA 22939.

Pearl L. Hopkins

Pearl L. Hopkins, 86, of Sophia, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Charles Tate and Mary Tate.

Pearl was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Hopkins, and daughter, Dixie M. Moran.

Those left to cherish her memory include a son, Charles F. Hopkins and wife, Jan, of Perry, Fla.; daughter, Margaret L. Stafford and husband, Ro-ger, of Mabscott; daughter, Shelma P. Brown and husband, Charles, of Roanoke, Va.; son, Gary Hopkins of Sophia; daughter, Rose Pompie and husband, Tim, of Beckley; grandchildren, Elwood, David, Anna Rose, Jimmy, Gary Ray, Angela, Chris, Mike, Tommy, Susie, Tammie and David (Joby); and 10 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, June 30, at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, with the Rev. Jan Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family one hour before service.

Dolly June Kenneda

Dolly June Woody Kenneda, 74, of Long Branch, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 26, 2006, at Logan Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 12, 1932, at Lax of Buffalo Creek, she was the daughter of the late Don and Tennessee Goodman Woody.

She was married for 50 loving years to the late Willie Kenneda.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Mckinley “Boots” Woody and Bill Woody; a sister, Nancy Paynter; and infant brother, WC Goodman.

Mrs. Kenneda was a member of the Upper Room Jesus Name Church at Long Branch.

She is survived by five sons, Curtis (Sue) Kenneda of Simon, Leon (Lucy) Kenneda of Lily Dale, Clifford (Sandy) Kenneda of Cookville, Tenn., Danny (Sherry) Kenneda of Coal Mountain and Willie Dean Kenneda of the home; four daughters, Lavon “Sissy” (Alfred) Lowe of Hanover, Sharon (Lendell) Stokes of Coal Mountain, Brenda (Marvin Lee) Parsons of Man and Jacquline (Samuel Moss) Hatfield of Elizabeth; three brothers, Connie Kenneda and Linzie Joe Goodman of Cookville and Jason Woody of Bradshaw; two sisters, Bonnie Miller of Cookville and Anna Faye Lawrence of Dayton, Ohio; 24 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Upper Room Jesus Name Church at Long Branch with the Rev. Andrew Thompson and the Rev. Brad Kenneda officiating. Burial will follow at Lowe cemetery at Hanover.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call today and Friday after 6 p.m. at the church.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert is in charge of arrangements.

STATESVILLE, N.C. — Leroy Lockhart Sr., formerly of Panther, died June 24, 2006.

Private service will be 3 to 5 p.m. today at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert.
