OAK HILL — Mary Cook Cruikshank, 87, of Oak Hill, passed away Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, at home following an extended illness.

EDMOND — William Russel Holtsclaw, 56, passed away Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005, in the McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Va.
He was born Sept. 7, 1949, at Nuttallburg, the son of the late William W. Holtsclaw and Russie Mae Kelly Holtsclaw of Edmond.
Mr. Holtsclaw was of the Baptist faith, a retired construction worker, a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the VFW.
Other than his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Birdy Lillian Holtsclaw; and a brother, Dale.
Survivors are his mother, Russie Holtsclaw of Edmond; a daughter, Christie Holtsclaw of Hopewell, Va; two sons, William L. Holtsclaw and Richard Doyle, both of Hope-well; two sisters, Sylvia Hardy of Edmond and Carol Brown of Hopewell; a brother, Donald Holtsclaw of Edmond; and three grandchildren, Brian Doyle, Noah Steve Alexander and Dustin Holtsclaw.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted, with Pastor George Chittum officiating. Burial will follow in Willis cemetery, Victor.
Friends may call one hour before service Saturday at the funeral home.

Nancy J. Marcinko of Harper Road died peacefully at her home on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005. She was 84 years of age.

Ora Daniel Cook Phillips
Ora Daniel Cook Phillips, 94, of Beckley, entered into rest on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, at Oakridge Nursing Home, Charleston, after a short illness.
She was born in Saxon on Feb. 26, 1911, the daughter of the late Arch Daniel and Ollie Daniel Eskew.
She lived for 40 years in Pineville and three years at the Bayberry in Beckley.
Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her husbands, Warren Cook and Alton Phillips; a brother, Kermit Daniel; and three sisters, Nellie Ransom, Grace Surratt and Evelyn Farley.
Survivors include a sister, Kathleen Jarrell of Dry Creek; a special friend, Ronnie Vance at Bayberry of Beckley; a niece, Kathy Kinder of Charleston; a nephew, Greg Jarrell, D.O., of Dry Creek, who cared for her the last few years; and many nieces and nephews.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Valley Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Gene Daly officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Eldridge M. ‘Shorty’ Richmond
HIX — Eldridge M. “Shorty” Richmond, 81, of Hix, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at his home.
Born Jan. 31, 1924 at Hix, he was the son of the late Noah C. and Clara F. Brown Richmond, and a lifelong resident of Hix.
Mr. Richmond was a retired employee of C&O Railroad and a lifelong farmer and timberman.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mildred E. Grimmett Richmond; a son, Ronald Ray Richmond; three brothers, Ernest and Everette Richmond and Earl Phipps; and a sister, Evelyn Sears.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Jean Basham Richmond; two sons, Charles Richmond and wife, Imogene, of Hix and Noah C. “Roger” Richmond and wife, Mary, of Hix; seven granddaughters, Mary Ann, Doris Jean, Lisa Carol, Mary Lynn, Ann Marie, Patricia and Rhonda Rae; eight great-grandchildren, Tyler, Brittany, Kati, Nichole, Brooke, Hailey, Jospeh Miles and Dakota; a brother, William Richmond of Hinton; and two sisters, Geraldine Buckland and Lorene Adkins, both of Hinton.
Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor Melvin Wills officiating. Burial will follow in Elk Knob Baptist Church cemetery.

Virgie Eileen Settle
Virgie Eileen Settle, 68, of MacArthur, passed away to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at home peacefully following a long illness.
Born Nov. 14, 1937, at Maben, she was the daughter of Tiney Alberta Lambert of Sta-naford and the late Edward David Samuel Lambert.
A longtime caretaker and business owner, she was a loving and caring woman with a loving and caring heart and was loved by all her family and friends. Her grandchildren were greatly cherished. She loved visits from her mother, brothers, sisters, caregivers and friends. She enjoyed her gardening and flower growing, and especially fishing and camping.
She was preceded in death by a nephew, James “Jimmy” Patrick Lambert.
In addition to her mother, those left to cherish her memory include her husband and companion of 49 years, Charles E. Settle, Jr.; a son, Richard E. Settle and fiancée, Joyce Ann Wriston, of Crab Orchard; grandchildren, Amy Eileen Settle of Virginia Beach, Va., Jessica Jane Cerise and husband, William, of Slidell, La., and Ricky E. Settle of Chesapeake, Va.; a great-grandson, “Lil Bill” Cerise; brothers and sisters, Edith Surratt and husband, Dale, of MacArthur, Jim Lambert and wife, Laura, of MacArthur, Troy Lambert and wife, Mona, of Chesapeake, Va., Anna Mae Harrah of Beckley, Harless Lambert and wife, Ann, of Stanaford and Becky Aliff and husband, Kenny, of Beckley; and an aunt, Ada Florence Redden and husband, Kenneth, of Pontiac, Mich.

Jerry W. Smith
Jerry W. Smith, 49, of Beaver, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, at Raleigh General Hospital after an apparent heart attack.
He was born Nov. 24, 1956, in Beckley, a son of the late Earl Smith and Lessie Kelly Smith of Beaver.
Mr. Smith was a former coal miner and construction worker.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a half brother, Danny Southall.
Survivors include his wife, Connie Lilly Smith; a son, Jason Smith, and daughter, Sarah Smith, both at home; sisters Beverly East and husband, Perry, of Beaumont, Texas, Geraldine Coley of Nokesville, Va., Ellen Smith of Manassas, Va., and Kathy Bays and husband, Larry Inwood; and several nieces and nephews.
Private service will be Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. There will be no visitation.
Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Mary Cook Cruikshank
OAK HILL — Mary Cook Cruikshank, 87, passed over to Heaven on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, at home on Jones Avenue following one of life’s wrinkles.
She was born in Frametown on Aug. 26, 1918, in the rolling hills of Braxton County, the daughter of the late Morgan Letcher Cook and Susie Keener Cook. After several years, the family moved to Hinton and then finally moved to Oak Hill.
Mary was a faithful 50-plus-year member of Fayetteville Baptist Church and graduated from Hinton High School and Virginia Intermont. She cherished her many years in service as Sunday school superintendent, started the Goldeneers, worked with the West Virginia Baptist Convention, participated in the implementation of ELECT and dedicated time to be a Sunday school teacher. Mary was a member of the Minta Warren Bible Class, the Collawn Sunday School Class and active with the Ruth Thurmond and Leota Campbell circles. Mary was fondly known as the “Queen of the Felt Board” to many children attending Fayetteville Baptist Church.
Mary served Alderson-Broaddus College on the Board of Governors for several years and continued to support the school and even opened her home to visiting students.
Mary, along with her brother Paul, managed and partnered in Cook Department Stores. Her family had retail stores in Fayetteville, Gauley Bridge, Oak Hill and Summersville. She spent many years working on the Lions Club Style Show in Oak Hill and was active with the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce and the Oak Hill Merchants Association.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Sharon Cruikshank Ellison, and her brother, Ernest Paul Cook.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Roy D. Cruikshank; and her son, Stephen Michael and wife, Sharon Cruikshank. Other survivors include Mary’s grandchildren, Morgan R. and Michael R. Cruikshank; her nieces and nephews, Mary Sue and Noel Revels, E. Paul and Patty Cook Jr.; and very close and special niece Norma Jordan. Heartfelt thanks to her wonderful caregiver, Nola Treadway, and also to Hospice of Southern West Virginia for always being there for us.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Fayetteville Baptist Church with Pastor Ron George Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before service Sunday at the church.
Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.
