Ilene G. Fortner, 83, formerly of Baileysville, passed away Monday, Nov. 28, 2005.

RANDOLPH, Ohio — Mr. Bucky Joe Handy, 53, made his final journey, Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at home after a long battle with cancer.
He was born Dec. 5, 1951, in Alliance, Ohio, the son of Lillie O. (Underwood) Hahn of Rootstown, Ohio, and the late Luther C. Handy.
Mr. Handy was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Korea. He was employed in the field of tool and die. He enjoyed fishing, cooking and gardening.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Hunter Cantrell (Handy)
He is survived by two sons, (Joseph) Shane Handy and Brian S. Handy of Alliance; a brother, Luther (Bob) Handy of Salem, Ohio, two sisters, Melissa S. Handy, of Alliance and Nancy O. Cline of Randolph; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home Chapel in Union with the Rev. Bob Ratliff officiating. Burial will follow in the Wickline cemetery at Zenith where graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 68 of Narrows, Va.
Family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home

CYCLONE — Betty Jean Dickens Adkins, 66, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 30, 2006, at her residence with her family by her side.
Born May 26, 1939, at Pine Knob, she was the daughter of the late Cody and Bradie Peters Dickens.
Survivors include three daughters, Drema Dickens and her husband, Tommy, of Dry Creek, Donna Blankenship and her husband, Lucas, of Cyclone and Lisa Justice and her husband, Mike, of Cyclone; two sons, Johnny Adkins Jr. and his wife, Tina, of Cyclone and Steve Adkins and his wife, Carol, of Cyclone; three sisters, Shirley Wright and her husband, James, of Stover, Patty Webb and her husband, Paul, of Arnett and Rosie Lively and her companion, Danny Dickens, of Naoma; a brother, Cody “Tommy” Dickens Jr. and his companion, Cheryl Wright, of Naoma; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Promise Land Church, Oceana, with the Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Dickens Family cemetery, Naoma.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the church.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Special singers will be the Turner Family and Pearl Blankenship.

UPATOI, Ga. — Terry Lynn Bowling, 56, died Friday, April 28, 2006, at Columbia Doctors Hospital after a three-year battle with multiple cancers.
Born April 20, 1950, at Josephine, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Daphnal O. Bolen Hornsby.
Mrs. Bowling was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Temple Assembly of God Church.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lorie Leigh Bowling; a brother, Harold Dean Hornsby; and sister, Reva Doreen Hornsby.
Survivors include her husband, Maj. (Ret.) George L. Bowling; two sons, Chuck Bowling and daughter-in-law, Tracy, of Smiths, Ala., and Robert L. Bowling of Upatoi; three sisters, Erma Delp of Beckley, Kitty Hungate of Ghent and Jill Perkins of Odd; five brothers, Darrell Hornsby of Flat Top, Gary Hornsby of Odd, and Kenneth Hornsby, Tommy Hornsby and Billy Hornsby, all of Josephine; and two grandchildren, Jackson Lee Bowling and Reagan Elizabeth Bowling of Smiths.

ANSTED — Helen Pauline Cole, 63, passed away Monday, May 1, 2006, at a Charleston hospital following a sudden illness.
Born Dec. 5, 1942, at Ansted, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Athalene Halstead Johnson.
She was a retired librarian of Ansted Library and a member of Lover’s Leap Baptist Church at Ansted.
She is survived by her husband, Ronnie Lee Cole Sr.; a daughter, Sandra Cole of Fayetteville; three sons, Faron Cole and wife, Nioka Faye, of Winston-Salem, N.C., Robert Dale Cole and wife, Bonnie, of Denver, N.C., and Ronnie Lee Cole Jr. and wife, Tonya, of Ansted; two sisters, Mary Combs of Virginia and Juanita Coldiron of Texas; a brother, Carl Johnson of Parkersburg; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Betty L. Cook
Betty L. Cook, of Naoma, earned her wings and went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 1, 2006, following a long illness. She was born March 29, 1936, at Cove Creek in Saxon Posey.
Betty was a Christian and a member of Naoma Freewill Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary.
Betty was a loving woman who never let life’s problems get her down. She would always point upward and say, “I’ve got God on my side.” One of her favorite songs was “Thank You Lord For Your Blessings On Me.” It touched hearts when she would sing it in church.
She was preceded in death by her father, Rev. Roscoe Herbert Cook; her mother, Wavie Cook; a brother, Milford Cook of Stover; and a sister, Aline Massey of Newton Falls, Ohio.
Betty is survived by her husband of 50 years, Billy Cook; six children, daughters Gloria Stanley and her husband, Scottie, of Clear Fork and Regina Bailey and her husband, Frank, of Breckenridge, and sons Richard Cook of North Carolina, Larry Cook of Naoma, Jerry Cook and his wife, Beulah Jean, of Naoma and Toby Cook and his wife, Angie, of Naoma; sister, Anna Mae Lucas and her husband, Robert, of Beckley; a sister-in-law, Dora Cook of Beckley; a brother-in-law, Lawrence Cook of Cleveland, Ohio; aunt, Etta Richmond of Logan; six grandchildren, Gary Dickens, Frank Cook, Misty Dawn Jefferies, Nikkie Willis, Jessica Lynn Cook and B.J. Cook; and three great-grandchildren, Ashley Nichole Dickens, Alexis Jefferies and Christian Jefferies.
She is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

ATLANTA — John Patrick Gillooly, 65, formerly of Weston, died Sunday, April 30, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.
Born Aug. 16, 1940, at Weston, he was the son of Regina Gissy Gillooly Droppleman of Charleston and the late James Joseph Gillooly.
Mr. Gillooly was a retired U.S. Secret Service agent. He was a graduate of Morris Harvey College. He was of the Catholic faith and had lived in Atlanta since 1977.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Connie Sue Phillips Gillooly; and a brother, James Joseph Gillooly Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Calkins Gillooly; daughter, Michelle Armstrong of Gainesville, Fla.; stepsons, David Bonds of Atlanta and Christopher Bonds of Atlanta; three sisters, Mary Agnes Cooper of Weston, Regina Richardson of Charleston and Joan Paisant of New Orleans, La.; and two grandchildren, Kristen Wright of Milton, Fla., and Joseph Armstrong of Gainesville, Fla.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Deacon Jay Ziolkowski officiating.
