CHARLESTON — William Shaffer Staub, 95, passed away Thursday, Nov. 24, 2005, in Beckley.
Born April 19, 1910, in Romney, he was the son of Earl Flam Staub and Helen Gert-rude Wagoner Staub. He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Flam Staub, Jr.
Shaffer received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from West Virginia University in 1934. He was captain of WVU’s varsity baseball team in 1932 and 1933, in which he is believed to have been the oldest living baseball player from WVU. Shaffer received commission of second lieutenant in the Army Reserve; was a member of Mountain Honorary; captain of Company E Military; member of the Red Dragon Castilieres; Phi Kappa Sigma social fraternity; and Torch and Serpent.
From 1941 to 1946, Shaffer served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the rank of lieutenant colonel and later retired at the rank of colonel. Following his service with the Army, he returned to West Virginia Water Service Co. as vice president and chief engineer until 1955.
In 1955, Shaffer joined Harry Gidley and Bill Kelley to form the consulting engineering firm of Kelley, Gidley and Staub Inc. After numerous projects, including the construction of over 1,000 complete water systems in Brazil, he was appointed as chief of West Virginia’s water supply program for the West Virginia Department of Health.
In 1970, he served the West Virginia Health Department as chief of public water supply and retired in 1975. He was a former national director of American Water Works Association where he was a life member; a life member of American Society of Civil Engineers; a life member of the American Academy of Sanitary Engineers; and a registered engineer in West Virginia.
Shaffer was married to Dorothy Arnold, a Romney native, until her passing on Feb. 27, 1999. Friday, Nov. 25, 2005, the date after his passing, would have been their 69th wedding anniversary.
Shaffer was a member of Ruffner Memorial Presbyterian Church in Charleston, where he was a Sunday school teacher of the Clique Class, a deacon and a ruling elder.
Shaffer had just recently moved to Beckley to reside with his daughter, Jane Hash, and her husband, Richard.
In addition to his daughter and son-in-law, he is survived by his granddaughter, Tracey Hash Shumate and her husband, Will, of Bradley; and great-granddaughters, Kathy Shumate-Vanover of Asheboro, N.C., and her husband, Ben Vanover of Gurnee, Ill., who is currently serving in the U.S. Navy, and Kerri Shumate of Bradley.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. to noon today at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, with service immediately following. The Rev. Amy Parker will conduct the service.
Final graveside rites will be Sunday at Indian Mound cemetery, Romney.

Shirley M. Devores
On Wednesday, April 5, 2006, Shirley M. “Red” Devores passed away at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Beckley following a long illness. He was 84 years of age.
Born Shirley Mack Devores on May 23, 1921, at Ferndale, Red was the son of the late Louis McKinley and Tressie Given Devores and spent his childhood in the community of Widen in Clay County.
A veteran of World War II, he entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and was in the Battle of Normandy. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Service Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He settled in Beckley in 1959 after residing in St. Albans for several years. Red was the chief radio technician for Company D of the West Virginia State Police, retiring in June 1983 with 30 years of service.
A faithful member of First United Methodist Church on South Heber Street, Red was a past member of the Board of Trustees and a member of the Methodist Men. In his leisure time, he enjoyed amateur radio as W8LYV and ran phone patches for missionaries in South America.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John Paul Devores, in 2003; and brothers, Eugene Devores and Gordon Devores.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Doris June Kittle Devores, whom he married on Dec. 11, 1943; three daughters, Susan Tate of Grove City, Ohio, Betsy Smith of Manassas, Va., and Annette Devores of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren, Courtney Devores and her husband, Phil Strickland, of Charlotte, N.C., Robert Foster and his wife, Nicole, of Mount Laurel, N.J., Jason Smith of Grove City and Eric Smith of Locust Grove, Va.; a brother, Franklin Dale Devores of Shinnston; a sister, Lenora Devores Curtis of Easton, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Melton Mortuary, 1200 Harper Road, Beckley, with the Rev. Dr. Bob Stoddard officiating. Graveside service will be 6 p.m. Saturday at the IOOF cemetery in Flemington.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary.

Bessie Lillian Cox Dove
OAK HILL — Bessie Lillian Cox Dove, 83, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley following a short illness.
Born at Brooklyn on May 21, 1922, she was the daughter of the late William Nelson and Eunice Mandy Alley Cox.
She was the retired owner of Dove’s Outlet, Oak Hill, and a homemaker.
Bessie was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Oak Hill.
She was preceded in death by six sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include her husband, Everette Hueston Dove; three sons, Donald Clyde Dove of Scarbro, Melvin Hueston Dove of Oak Hill and Mark Edward Dove of Fayetteville; two daughters, Rita Jeanette Snyder of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Rebecca Jane Dunaway of Indiana; a brother, Leonard Cox of Newark, Del.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

William R. Hinkle
LEWISBURG — William R. Hinkle, 74, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at Cleveland Clinic following a long illness.
Born Feb. 10, 1932, at Rupert, he was the son of the late Amos and Nellie Black Hinkle of Clintonville.
Mr. Hinkle attended Smoot Baptist Church. He was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army, was a member of the Ex-POWs of the Korean War, having been captured in November 1950 and released in May 1953. After being released from captivity, he made his career as a coal miner, retiring in 1974, was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign War and Disabled American Veterans.
He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a sister, Velma Loudermilk; twin infant brothers, Amos Franlin and Howard Clifton Hinkle; and a brother, Thomas Hinkle.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Delta Shortridge Hinkle; two daughters, Deloris Hedrick and husband, Freddie, of Clintonville and Dianna Hinkle of Matthews, N.C.; two sons, Mark Hinkle and wife, Lynn, of Lewisburg and Eddie Hinkle of Dawson; four sisters, Mary Sue Cochran of Summersville, Ann Mullins of Columbus, Ohio, Wanda Campbell of Newark, Ohio, and Phyllis Polsten of Mesquite, Texas; a brother, Randall Hinkle of Warrenton, Va.; 10 loving grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special POW friends.
Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg, with the Rev. Jim Lushinger officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville, with full military honors.

Crystal Herold Patterson
On Wednesday, April 5, 2006, Crystal Herold Patterson passed away in a Beckley hospital. She was in her 95th year.
Born Crystal Dale Herold on Nov. 22, 1910, at Summersville, she was one of six children born to the late Paris A. and Strauss Blankenship Herold.
Crystal spent her childhood at Summersville and had been a resident of Beckley since age 15; she was a longtime resident of South Kanawha Street. Her home sat beside Beckley Presbyterian Church where she had been a faithful member and was active in the Women’s Circle. In earlier years she had been a receptionist at Pinecrest Hospital. Crystal was quite knowledgeable about the history of Beckley and historians would often call upon her for her insight about the early history of this city. A lover of flowers, she will be remembered for the beautiful roses that she grew.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry M. Patterson II; a son, Harry M. Patterson III; a grandson, Harry M. Patterson IV; and her daughter-in-law, Priscilla Sue Bane Patterson.
She was the last survivor of her immediate family.
She was the beloved Mother of Richard H. “Dick” Patterson of Crab Orchard; and the dear grandmother of Richard H. Patterson II and his wife, Tonya, Susan Ann Patterson, Kathryn Jane Patterson Simms and her husband, L. Scott, William M. Patterson and his wife, Casey, John R. Patterson, Thomas K. Patterson and his wife, Sheri Lynne, and Robert C. Patterson and his wife, Jodi; and the great-grandmother of Stacia Bane and Alexa C. Simms, Eve Amelia, Cabel Christian, Anne K. and Robert Connor Patterson, and Samantha Perry. Crystal is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Virginia “Ginger” Patterson of Beckley; and several nieces and nephews, among them a beloved niece, Jane R. Pennington and her husband, Fred.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Beckley Presbyterian Church, 203 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, with the Rev. Adrian Pratt officiating. Burial will follow in the Patterson-McCreery family plot at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call noon until time of the service Saturday at the church.
Grandsons and Robert McLean will serve as pallbearers.

Margaret Elizabeth Bostic
CONYERS, Ga. — Margaret Elizabeth Bostic, 90, formerly of Monroe County, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2007 at Rockdale Medical Center after an extended illness.
She was born Sept. 8, 1916, in Earling to the late Ora and Charlotte Lucas Burwell.
As a graduate of Chapmansville High School and Concord College, she was an educator for 36 years in West Virginia and 10 years in Georgia. She was an active member of Rockdale Baptist Church where she was involved in Sunday school and the joyful Senior Saints Choir. One of her life-long hobbies was quilting.
Mrs. Bostic was preceded in death by three brothers, Orville, William and Daniel Burwell.
Surviving are her loving husband of 61 years, Claude Bostic; they resided in Conyers; two daughters, Charlotte Fisher and husband, Charles, of Sebastopol, Calif., and Marilene Cunningham and husband, Bob, of Cumming, Ga.; four grandchildren, Caryn Fisher of Sebastopol, Charles Fisher of San Diego, Calif., Brent Cunningham of Slidell, La., and Ashley Cunningham of Alpharetta, Ga.; three sisters, Lena Hobbs of Winston-Salem, N.C., Juanita Lusk of Burnville, N.C., and Bernice Hauth of Black Mountain, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 1, at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, with the Rev. Jonathan Jennings officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill cemetery, Union.
