KEYSER — T. Wanda C. “Tudy” Hale, 90, died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md., after a long battle with emphysema and osteoporosis.
She was born Sept. 10, 1915, at Mullens, a daughter of the late Walter A. and Hilda “Jackson” Cook.
Mrs. Hale was formerly employed by Colcord Coal Co. before becoming a housewife and mother.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Ira Verne Cook.
Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Robert C. Hale; three children, John R. Hale and wife, Melinda, of Keyser, Charlotte Frola and husband, Ron, of Prescott, Ariz., and Wanda Faye McInnis and husband, Kevin, of Sugarland, Texas; five grandchildren, Jason R. Hale of Keyser, Justin J. Hale of Brooklyn, N.Y., Peter Frola of Prescott, Margaret Frola of Annapolis, Md., and Theodore Panipinto of Gainesville, Fla.; and three stepgrandchildren, Nina, Josie and Cathy.
Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with Michael Lykens, CLP, officiating. Internment will be in Miller cemetery, Rock Creek.
Friends may call two hours before service Friday at the funeral home.

Betty Jo Rader Hughes
MOUNT HOPE — Betty Jo Rader Hughes, 82, formerly of Beckley, died at 7 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, June and Sanford McNeely, after an extended illness.
She was born Aug. 10, 1923, in Meadow Bridge, a daughter of the late William C. Rader and Isabel Law Rader.
Mrs. Hughes was the owner-operator of Hughes Packette in Stanaford.
She was a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church.
A 1941 graduate of Stoco High School, Mrs. Hughes was also a graduate of St. Genevieve College in Asheville, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William P. Hughes, who died in 1979; a brother, William C. Rader Jr.; a sister-in-law, Kathleen Rutledge Rader; and a niece, Sandra Sue Rader Stewart.
Survivors include a sister, June R. McNeely and husband, Sanford, of Mount Hope; nieces Christine McNeely Foster and husband, Fred, Peggy Rader Mankin and husband, David, Helen Jo Rader Blackburn and husband, Fred, and Katie Lee Rader Ayers and husband, George; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Private service was held Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley, with the Rev. Jerry Cook officiating.

Paul Francis Hummel
Paul Francis Hummel, 75, of Coal City, entered into heaven on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005.
He was born Sept. 17, 1930, into the parish of St. Francis de Sales in McKees Rocks, Pa.
Being the youngest of three sons, he was preceded in death by his parents, Clara Sloan and John Phillip Hummel, and two brothers, David and John Hummel, all of Pittsburgh.
Proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army for 21 years, he retired in 1969 and settled in Sophia with his family. He began a second career at the Beckley VA Medical Center where he was chief of security and then volunteered there for several years following his retirement. Paul was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church in Beckley, a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 5657, a life member of DAV and VFW, and the Second Indianhead Division Association.
Paul is survived by his wife of 53 years, Maxine Davis Hummel; four daughters, Diane Worrells and husband, Randy, of Lakeland, Fla., Kathleen Dickerson and husband, Michael, of Fairdale, Dolores Hutchens and husband, James, of Coal City and Paula Wheeler and husband, David, of Fayetteville; and seven grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Father Sam Sacus and the Rev. Randall Pugh officiating.
Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Sons-in-law and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may visit 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. There will be a rosary service at 7:30 p.m.

Lovelean Lewis
Lovelean Lewis was born Aug. 16, 1923, in Finlow, W.Va., to the late Hattie and Clarence Merchant.
She entered eternal rest on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005.
Lovelean grew up in Minden. She married her beloved Wilbur at an early age and remained married for 56 years until he preceded her in death on April 26, 1996.
Lovelean was an employee of the Bassett Furniture Co. for more than 30 years. She was a faithful member of The Paradise Temple church of Ridgeway, Va., officiating Pastor Joseph J. Mayo.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Sadie Mae Merchant of Harlem Heights; and two nephews, Steven and Frank.
Lovelean leaves behind her six sisters, Reather Lee Thomas of Orange, N.J., Rose Jennings of Newark, N.J., Lorraine Rumph of Akron, Ohio, Ethel James of Akron, Mattie Walls of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ada Holden of Orange; nieces and nephews, Burma Wise of Orange, Winston, Theodore Lee, Jessie, Anita, Lovell, Issiac Jr., Kevin, Terry, Sonya, Deborah, Gregory, Monique, Rachelle, Tammy, Teresa, Donna, Darlene, Sharon, Brian, Deshawn, JaQuay, Anthony, Ginger, Keith, Felicia, Dejoris, Tyrone and Sylvester; and a host of grandnieces and nephews.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Harlem Heights, with Pastor Joseph J. Mayo officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Frances Santy Owens
Mrs. Frances Santy Owens, 92, of Beckley, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, in a Sandy Hook, Ky., nursing facility.
Born Oct. 17, 1913, in Bafia, Messina, Sicily, she was the daughter of the late Santo and Domenica Mirabile Italiano.
Mrs. Owens immigrated from Italy in 1920 at the age of 6. She was former owner-operator of the Corner New Deal on South Oakwood Avenue in Beckley and was an Avon representative for 50 years. She was a member of St. Francis deSales Catholic Church and had been a resident of Beckley since 1920.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Santy; her second husband, Bernard Owens; two brothers, Joseph and John Italiano; and two sisters, Tina Italiano Smith and Santa Italiano Brown.
She is survived by two sisters, Janie Terreo and husband, James, of Bruin, Ky., and Mary Rettburgh and husband, Jack, of Statesville, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral liturgy will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church, Beckley, with the Rev. Samuel S. Sacus officiating. Rite of committal will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley, where a vigil prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m., led by the Rev. Samuel S. Sacus.
Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Oretha Vass Shawver
ALDERSON — Oretha Vass Shawver, 97, of Alderson, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, at The Brier Rehabilitation And Nursing Center, Ronceverte, following a short illness.
Born Dec. 2, 1907, at Lindside, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary Todd “Molly” Smith Vass.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Allen Shawver; a sister, Lucille Sutton; and a niece, Norma June Webb.
Mrs. Shawver was a retired school teacher, having taught school in Monroe and Greenbrier counties for 32 years. She attended Alderson Baptist Academy and Junior College and graduated from Concord College with a teaching certificate. Mrs. Shawver had been a member of Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, for the past 76 years, having joined the church in 1929. She was a member of the Homemaker’s Sunday School Class and loved church and Sunday school. Mrs. Shawver was very active in social and civic organizations in the community of Alderson and will always be remembered for her generosity and kindness to others.
Survivors include a special great-niece, Mary Morris and her husband, Jeff, of White Sulphur Springs; great-great-nieces, Holly Morris of White Sulphur Springs and Tracy White and her husband, Tony, of Roanoke, Va.; a great-great-great-nephew, Logen Withrow of Roanoke; special friend, Patty Hill of Frankford; and several other nieces and nephews.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, with the Rev. Mark Stauffer officiating. Burial will follow in Alderson cemetery.
Friends may call noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the church.

William D. ‘Bill’ Shuff
ANSTED — William D. “Bill” Shuff, 69, of Ansted passed away Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness.
Bill was born July 1, 1936, at Lansing, W.Va. He was the son of the late Clyde and Russie Pike Shuff.
Bill was a coal miner and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was very much involved with the Little League baseball team and the Boy Scouts and he helped organize the Midland Trail baseball team.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Norma Lusher.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Shuff; two sons, William “Chuck” Shuff and April of Hico and Steve Shuff and Jessica of Glenville; two brothers, Robert Shuff and Norma and John Shuff and Mona, all of Lansing; and four grandchildren, Trey and Kylie of Glenville, and Megan and Mackenzie of Hico.
Service will be 2 p.m. today at Ansted Baptist Church with Pastor Jack Eades and Pastor Doug Eades officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Garden, Victor.

Virginia Belle Miller Wallace
PASADENA, Texas — Mrs. Virginia Belle Miller Wallace passed away Monday, Nov. 28, 2005.
Virginia was born in Mabscott on March 29, 1917, the daughter of Frank James Miller and Ida Cole Parker.
She married Orville “Doc” Wallace on Jan. 14, 1938, in Beckley. The couple made their home in Oceana, and were the co-owners of the Union Cut Rate Drug Store. They were active members of Oceana Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Wallace was also involved with the Pineville Order of the Eastern Star until moving to Pasadena in 1970.
Her parents, Frank and Ida Miller; brother, Woodrow Miller; sister, Mary Madeline Miller Weaver; and husband, Orville “Doc” Wallace, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a brother, Charles Miller of Cocoa, Fla., and her four children.
A part of Virginia still lives on in those children, Peggy Wallace Huchison and Pat Wallace, both of Pasadena, Larry Wallace of Houston, Texas, and Paulette Wallace Frazier of Glen Fork; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Burial was 11 a.m. Wednesday at Forest Park Lawndale cemetery, Houston.
