Clyde A. Ervin Sr.
OAK HILL — Clyde A. Ervin Sr., 69, of Oak Hill, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Born Aug. 23, 1936 at Crown Hill, he was the son of the late Adrian Ervin and Irene Mullins Steele. Clyde had been self-employed since 1958, having owned Allied Exterminating Co.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Barbara Ervin; three sons, Clyde A Ervin Jr. of Oak Hill, James D. Ervin of Scarbro and William Keith Ervin and his wife, Terry, of Waynesboro, Va.; two brothers, Kenneth Ray Ervin Sr. and wife, Shirley, of Carl and Everette Steele and wife, Beverly, of Beckley; three sisters, Wanda Hackney of Waynesboro, Va., Brenda Puckett and husband, Jim, of Oak Hill and Susie Jones and husband, Don, of Shelbyville, Ind.; five grandchildren, Clyde A Ervin III, Zachary Ervin, Miranda Ervin, Tommy Durie and Lori Durie; and two great-grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Diarmuid H. O’Hara and the Rev. Dorothy Osborne officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ollie Fitch
MOUNT HOPE — Mrs. Ollie Fitch, 92, of Mount Hope, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, after a short illness.
She was born Feb. 19, 1920, in Nelson County, Va., the daughter of the late Rev. Charles Tolliver Johnson and Eva Virginia Johnson, and was a homemaker and a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Whipple.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sons, Lawrence, Leslie and Michael; three daughters, Diane, Della Mae and Celia; seven brothers, nine sisters, and a grandchild.
Survivors include sons Jonathan (Phyllis) of Portsmouth, Va., Charles of Chicago, Ill., and Ronnie of Beckley; sisters Beatrice Lett of Oak Hill and Hazel Summerville of Wingrove; 35 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and friends; and a special friend, Dorothy Mays of Mount Hope.
Homegoing service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Ritchie & Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Freddie Davenport and the Rev. Calvin Moore officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour before service Friday at the funeral parlor.

Elmer Ray Bailey
ODD — Elmer Ray Bailey, age 57, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006, at the Summers County ARH following a sudden illness.
Born at Amigo, on June 3, 1949, he was the son of the late Elmer E. Bailey and Dorothy McDaniel Bailey.
Mr. Bailey was employed as a carpenter for Wood’s Construction and was a Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was a member of the Mountain Valley Missionary Baptist Church at Odd.
Surviving son, Danny Bailey of Coal City; daughters, Crissy Polk and husband, Edward, of Coal City, Debbie Polk and husband, Doug, of Besoco, and Wendy Bailey of Odd; sisters, Ivy Dawson and husband, Virgil, of Crab Orchard, Kathy Sargent and husband, Martin, of Rhodell, Patricia Sizemore of Statesville, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. John Lilly and the Rev. Bill Reed officiating. Burial will follow in the Bailey Family cemetery at Odd.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

HILLTOP — Violet Bragg, 71, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, at Plateau Medical Center.

Barbara A. Bray
Barbara A. Bray, 70, formerly of Beckley, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2005, in a Parkersburg hospital following a long illness.
Born on March 7, 1936, in Sewell, WV, she was the daughter of the late Cecil Rice Bray and Thelma Virginia McCallister Bray.
In addition to her parents, Miss Bray was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Belcher, in January of this year.
Survivors include three brothers, Cecil Bray of Sophia, William W. Bray of Martinsburg and Kyle F. Bray of Gatewood, Va., and by two sisters, Mary Bray and Yvonne Bray, both of Beckley.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16th, in the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. David Trump officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park cemetery, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour to the service time Saturday.

Cindy Dawn Cales
HINTON — Cindy Dawn Cales, 43, of 272 Main St., Hinton, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006, in Hinton.
Born Jan. 12, 1963, at Ft. Meade, Md., she was the daughter of James E. and Sandra Willey Cales of Hinton.
Cindy served two years in the United States Air Force. She was a member of Ascension Episcopal Church in Hinton and served as organist at the church. She taught piano for several years in Hinton and was a 4-H All Star. She was a lifelong resident of Hinton.
Besides her parents, survivors include one son, Joel Edward Cales of Hinton; a daughter, Melanie Lee Cales of Hinton; a brother, J.C. Cales and wife Michelle of Hinton; and maternal grandmother, June Cox of Hinton.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Rev. Robert Moore and Rev. Grover Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park in Hinton. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

MATHENY — Charles Hall, 44, passed away Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006, at his residence.

George (Tommy) Jones
On Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006, George (Tommy) Jones of Coal City Road went to see his Lord and Savior. He was 73 years of age.
Born George Thomas Jones on April 26, 1933, at Abney, he was the second of four children born to the late George Ramey and Irene Young Jones.
Known affectionately as Tommy all his life, he spent his childhood at Abney and was a 1951 graduate of Stoco High School.
During the era of the Korean War, Tommy served in the United States Army.
A friendly and outgoing man, he became a natural for sales and began a career with Purity Bakery Company, where he eventually became a branch manager. He had 27 years with Purity. Tommy retired from Valley Bell as a branch manager. A resident of Kingsport, TN, for a number of years, Tommy returned to the Beckley area in 1994. He was a member of Coal City Freewill Baptist Church. In his leisure he enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Zettie Lilly Jones, in 2001; and a brother, Jimmy.
He is the loving father of David T. Jones and his wife Deborah of Abingdon, VA; the dear grandfather of Lindsey Jones; fond brother of Elizabeth (Betty) Hodges of Beckley and Eddie Jones and his wife Alma of West Melbourne, FL; several nieces and nephews also survive and a special friend, Sarah Ballengee.
Funeral services will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Revs. Charles Brown and Jeff Thompson officiating. Entombment will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at the mortuary and one hour prior to the services on Sunday.
Pallbearers will be Rusty Hodges, Billy, Derek and Ian Johnson, David Mills and Terry Lilly.

Julia McVey
Julia McVey, 88, of Crab Orchard, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, in a local hospital.
She was the daughter of the late J.B. and Mary Wills Wilson.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Frank McVey; her grandson, Jason McVey; and her son-in-law, Jim Lane.
Julia is survived by her son, Nick McVey; daughter, Sue Lane; grandchildren, Frank McVey, Mick Lane, Kevin Lane and Elizabeth McLaughlin; great-great-grandchildren, Justin, Brandon, Colin, Khristina and Criton.
As per Julia’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral.

Carl William Amick
NIMITZ — Carl William Amick, 76, of Nimitz, passed away Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006 while working on his farm at Nimitz, W.Va.
Born January 31, 1930 at Russellville, W.Va., he was the son of the late William Bartlett and Lena Nutter Amick.
Mr. Amick was a 1948 graduate of Nutall High School. Following high school he joined the U.S. Navy and became a Commissioned Officer in 1958. He served his country in Korea and Vietnam. He was the Commanding Officer of the USS Patapsco and retired as a Lieutenant Commander in October 1970.
Carl was an active member of the Bluestone Baptist Church and was associated with many organizations including: 17 years with the Southern Soil Conservation District, the American Red Cross, President of the Jumping Branch/Nimitz PSD, President of the Summers County Farm Bureau, Board Member at the Southern States COOP, Member of Woodlands Owner’s Association of West Virginia and others.
Preceded in death by one son, Steven Breck Amick, February 2, 2006 his parents, one sister, Laura Mae Amick and three brothers: Fred, Ray and Robert Amick.
He is survived by his wife: Loretta Thurmon Amick, two sons: Richard Amick of King George, VA., and Gene Amick and his wife Janet of Nimitz, W.Va., one daughter: Ronda Bachar and her husband Doug of Morgantown, W.Va., four granddaughters; Sarah Amick of Richmond, VA., Rachel Amick of Nimitz,W.Va. Amanda Bachar and Cheryl Bachar both of Morgantown, W.Va. and two grandsons; Jacob Amick of Laurel, MD., and Jared Bachar of Morgantown, W.Va.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Bluestone Baptist Church at Jumping Branch with Pastor Bill Fox officiating. Burial will follow in the Lilly-Crews cemetery at Nimitz.
Friends may call at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors in Hinton from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
