Mary Rebecca Reed

Mary Rebecca Reed, age 85, of Shady Spring, died Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born at Blue Jay on March 16, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Sarah Smith Rollyson.

Mrs. Reed was a homemaker, was of the Methodist faith and had lived at Shady Spring for the past 12 years, having previously resided in Beaver.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Charles Prince and Wayne Reed; a great-grandson, Brandon Shrewsbury; and a son-in-law, Norman Gilkerson.

Survivors include sons, Kirk Prince and wife, Billye, of Shreveport, La., Charles Mack Prince of Shady Spring; daughters, Barbara Cogar of Shady Spring and Rebecca Gilkerson of Beaver; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. Betty Lusk officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of the service today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Vadis Crawford Smith Jr.

PETERSTOWN — Vadis Mack Crawford Smith Jr., 78, formerly of Beckley, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005, at Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton.

Born April 23, 1927, he was the son of the late Vadis Mack Smith Sr. and Threasa Young Smith.

Mr. Smith was a retired truck driver and a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a sister, Juanita Bowling of Manassas, Va.; and his caregiver, Melinda Belcher of Peterstown, with whom he made his home for 15 years.

Honoring Mr. Smith’s request, the body will be cremated.

Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur Scott Warden

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Arthur Scott Warden, 29, formerly of Shady Spring and St. Albans, died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005, in a Charlotte, N.C., hospital, following a short-term illness.

Born Oct. 28, 1976, at Beckley, he was the son of Arthur Lewis Warden Jr. of Daniels and Terica Holtsclaw-Wolfe of St. Albans, and the stepson of Sharon Warden of Daniels.

Mr. Warden was a framer for Perfect Angles in Rock Hill, S.C.

He was a graduate of Shady Spring High School and lived in Rock Hill for the past seven years. He was a member of the Riverwood Baptist Church at St. Albans.

Other survivors besides his parents include his fiancée, Frances Lilly of Rock Hill, S.C.; children, Destiney Faith Lambert of Prosperity, Brennon Alan Lee Knight of Rock Hill, and Eathen Danyel Ray Knight of Rock Hill; a brother, Aaron Holtsclaw of Rock Hill, S.C.; sisters, Christi Holtsclaw, and her children, Ethan and Kaitlyn of St. Albans, and Krystal Warden of Daniels, and April Warden of Daniels; paternal grandmother, Bertha Warden of Beckley; and maternal grandparents, William and Bobby Knapp of Nitro.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel, with the Pastor Jack Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Grandview cemetery.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Tom Moran, Roger Warden, Tim Warden, Harry Wood, Dale Meadows, Dwight Long.

A memorial service will also be held for Mr. Warden Saturday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 523 Second St., St. Albans, with the Rev. Joel Harpold officiating. Visitation will start at 1 p.m. prior to the service.

Ralph Owen Wilson Jr.

HINTON — Ralph Owen Wilson Jr., 80, of 206 Cedar Ave., died at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, in the Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital, Hinton, following a long illness.

Harry E. Albaugh Sr.

Harry E. Albaugh Sr., 88, died Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, at Oakridge Center in Charleston.

Born July 3, 1917, at Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Herbert and Pearl (Church) Albaugh.

Mr. Albaugh grew up in Littleton in Wetzel County and graduated from Littleton High School as class valedictorian in 1936. He then moved to Charleston and met his future wife, Vivian Sands. There he was employed by the National Biscuit Co. as sales representative.

He was drafted into the United States Army and was under the command of Lt. Gen. Mark Clark, where as a private, he headed up a mortar unit in the 88th Division. He fought from battlefields all over Italy, where he earned the distinguished Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals and Three Battle Stars. He personally witnessed the bodies of Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini and his mistress hanging upside down, in Italy one day, after they were executed by Italian partisans.

At the end of World War II, he returned to work for National Biscuit Company and was relocated to Point Pleasant in 1952 until his retirement in 1978.

Mr. and Mrs. Albaugh have lived in Beckley at Pikeview Apartments since 1997. Mr. Albaugh was a 14-degree member of the Charleston branch of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Wilma Villars and Ethel Burch of Monongahela, Pa.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Vivian; and his son, Harry Jr. and wife Sharon of Shady Spring; his granddaughter, Diana, and husband Peter Hornbeck Jr., of Masontown; grandsons, Todd and wife Jennifer Albaugh of Camp Creek, and Brent and wife Benetta Albaugh of Augusta, Ga. Mr. Albaugh has two great-grandchildren, Shanleigh Hornbeck and Ryan Albaugh. He also has several nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania and Michigan.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005, at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home in Point Pleasant with Robert L. Patterson II officiating. Burial will follow at Kirkland Memorial Gardens near Point Pleasant.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Jack Bradberry

Jack Bradberry, 74, of Zion Mountain, died Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, in Summers County ARH Hospital in Hinton following a long illness.

Jack suffered from Parkinson’s disease, along with the grief of losing the love of his life, Sara, on June 14, 2003, that eventually led to his death.

Jack was born on April 29, 1931, at Bertha in Summers County. He was the son of the late Fred and Grace Garten Bradberry.

Jack was a member of Bellepoint Baptist Church in Hinton and was a member of the Teamsters. Jack was a truck driver for most of his life. He started driving with J.O. Ball Lumber Co., and then later drove for Odie Meador Lumber Co., Belle Lines, Smith Transfer, and American Freight. After his retirement, he drove shortly for R.T. Rogers Oil Co. and then for Orders Paving.

Jack loved to garden, fish and camp. He had a great love for his family and wanted nothing more than to be with them.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Sara Ball Bradberry. Also preceded by his son-in-law, Toney A. Anderson; and by his daughter-in-law, Susan Smith Bradberry; one brother, Jimmy Bradberry; and two sisters, Frances Bradberry Meador and Baby Maxine.

Survivors include his son, William “Bill” Bradberry of Zion Mountain, who is associate professor of accounting at New River Community and Technical College in Beckley, and his fiancée Debbie Connor; his daughter, Becky Bradberry Anderson of Zion Mountain; three grandsons, Matthew and Caleb Bradberry, and Trevor Anderson; two granddaughters, Jackie Anderson Persinger and husband Jeffrey and Sherry Anderson, both of Hinton; a very special cousin, whom he loved like a brother, Arnold “Cuz” Bradberry & wife Betty of Millboro, Va.

Other family members include Robert & Susan Orders and their family, Doris Bradberry and family, Phillip Meador, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Mike Ballard officiating, assisted by Pastor David Board. Burial will follow in the Ball Family cemetery on Zion Mountain.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Arnold Bradberry, Donnie Bradberry, Jeffrey Persinger, Eric Persinger, Larry Persinger, David Cole, Jack Hartwell and Jarod Hartwell.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bud Shanks, Doug Fox, Richard Cook, Bobby Bradberry and Robert Orders.

Daddy, you are finally together again with Mom, the love of your life, the beat of your heart. God has joined you again together, this time in eternity, never to be separated again. Someday we will join you and our circle will become unbroken once again. We love you.

Gertrude Elizabeth Calhoun

Gertrude Elizabeth Calhoun, 91, of Midway passed away Nov. 16, 2005.

Born Aug. 10, 1914, she was the daughter of the late G.S. and Rosa Ann Franklin.

Mrs. Calhoun was a homemaker and member of the Bethel Freewill Baptist Church for 43 years.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. F.C. Calhoun; brothers, James D. Franklin, Clarence Franklin, Russell Franklin, Don Franklin and Robert Franklin; sisters, Mary Calhoun and May Oakes; and her son-in-law, James P. Hunter.

Those left to cherish her loving memory include sons, the Rev. Bill Calhoun and wife, Joyce, of Crab Orchard and Harold Dean Calhoun and wife, Sandra Kay, of Lexington, Ky.; daughters, Rose Marie Hunter of Charleston, Reba Jane Beckett and husband, Jimmy, of Crab Orchard, and Drema Slaughter and husband, Don, of Lakeland, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Hazel Lewis of Gastonia, N.C., and Pauline Calhoun of High Point, N.C.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at the Bethel Freewill Baptist Church in MacArthur with the Rev. Sherman Sizemore officiating.

Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Beckley and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bethel Freewill Baptist Church in MacArthur.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, is serving the family.

Opal Zetta Collins

Opal Zetta Collins of Sophia passed away from this life at 3:50 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005.

She moved on to glory surrounded by her five children, her daughter-in-law and grandson.

Opal was born May 3, 1916, in McDowell County, W.Va. She was the daughter of the late George and Ollie Roland.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, David W. Collins, in 1988.

Mom and Dad moved to Sophia in 1955 and spent the remainder of their life on Dunn Street. Mom worked at the Sophia Laundromat for several years and always cherished the many friends she made while working.

Her pride and joy were her five surviving children: Margaret Jane Petry and husband, Ernest, of Rhonda, Alla Marie Ferguson, who lived with her and was her caregiver for the past 18 years, Patsy Sue Smith and husband, Hanes, of Beckley, Kathleen Waldron and husband, Herb, of Glen Daniel, and GMSgt. (USAFR) John Edward Collins and wife, Sharon, of Bonaire, Ga.; grandchildren, Betty Jane Marks, Ernestine McCoy, John Taylor Ferguson, Ernest Len Petry Jr., Ernest D. Nichols Jr., George David Nichols, Phillip Martin Browning Jr., David Lee Browning and Kevin Lee Collins; 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dewey Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 147 Virginia St., Sophia, is serving the family.

Carol Louise Berger

LEWISBURG — Carol Crawford Berger, 57, of Lewisburg, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2006, after a six-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Born Dec. 13, 1948, in Tacoma, Wash., she was the daughter of the late Paul Crawford and Louise Thompson of Kilsyth.

Carol was a graduate of Mount Hope High School, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Va., and Morris Harvey College. She was employed for over a decade at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Lewisburg. Carol was a faithful mother, friend and devoted follower of Christ.

Those left to cherish her memory include her aforementioned mother, Zora Louise Martin; three sisters, Jane Dorsey of Beckley, Patricia Crawford of Mount Hope and Terry Leigh Stover of Beaver; and her two sons, Cameron Crawford Berger and Charles S. Jr., both of Huntington.

Service was 1 p.m. Monday, June 26, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Roger E. Pauley officiating. Burial followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, was in charge of arrangements.
