Warren D. Sharpenberg, 83, of 109 Cranberry Pointe Way, Beckley, went peacefully to be with his God on Monday, Nov. 7, 2005. He was born Sept. 21, 1922, in Belle Vernon, Pa., the son of the late Frank P. and Maude Hough Sharpenberg.
Mr. Sharpenberg was a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church, AIME (American Institute of Mining Engineers), West Virginia Mining Institute, American Legion Post 32, West Virginia University Alumni Association, Black Knight Country Club and the Beckley Rotary Club, where he was awarded the Paul Harris Award in 2000.
He was a graduate of Morgantown High School, setting state track and field records, some not broken until after 20 years. He loved sports, particularly golf, his hobby and lifelong recreation. He was a graduate of West Virginia University School of Mines and a Registered Professional Engineer. He contributed many innovative and creative ideas to the mining industry that are still used today. He was a former vice president of Consolidation Coal Co. and president of Itmann Coal Co.
Warren served as a captain in the Army Corps of Engineers in World War II in both the European and Pacific Theaters of Operations.
His friends and family will miss his charming personality and great sense of humor. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Grace Williams Sharpenberg; daughter, Margaret Ann Bays and her husband, Jerry Bays, of Beckley; a son, Thomas E. Sharpenberg and his wife, Debi, of Lakeland, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews around the United States.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Lee Sharpenberg, and a son, Paul Richard Sharpenberg; sisters, Opal Brown and Vera McCue; and brothers, Dwight L. and Homer W. Sharpenberg.
Memorial service will be given by the Rev. Adrian J. Pratt at Beckley Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will be one hour before service.

Glenn Allyn Cook
BECKWITH — Glenn Allyn Cook, 83, of Beckwith, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2006, at the Fayette Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Fayetteville, following an extended illness.
Born on October 15, 1922 in Fayette County, he was the son of the late Pearl M. Cook and Bessie Falls Cook.
Glenn was a member of the Cotton Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Beckwith, and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a self-employed carpenter, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mae Feazell and Violet Shieler; and four brothers, Preston Cook, Loyal Cook, Shelburn Cook, and Pat Cook.
Survivors include his sisters-in-law, Margaret Ann Cook of Fayetteville and Betty Cook of Oak Hill; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with Rev. Mark Secrist officiating. Burial will follow.

Rachel Mae Kirby Cutlip
GRASSY MEADOWS — Rachel Mae Kirby Cutlip, 75, of Grassy Meadows, formerly of Camp Springs, Md., died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a long illness.
Born March 25, 1931 at Pence Springs, she was the daughter of the late Hobert Francis and Bertha Mae Smith Kirby.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hill Cutlip.
Mrs. Cutlip was a retired cafeteria worker, having retired from the Prince George County School system, Camp Springs, Md., and was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith, a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Silver Hill, Md., and was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include a son, Robert Dale Cutlip of Grassy Meadows; two daughters, Virginia Mae Kirby Young and her husband Joe of Fort Spring and Annie Darnell Cutlip and fiancé Tracy Horney of Clayton; a sister, Audrey Louise Kirby Jones of Alderson; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with Preacher Eddie Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.
Friends may call today from 7 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

OAK HILL — James P. “Bud” King, 80, died Saturday, April 22, 2006, at his home following a long illness.
Born Aug. 24, 1925, at Bolt, he was the son of the late Paul Upton and Lottie M. Acord King.
Mr. King was retired Receiving Clerk for Long Airdox in Oak Hill. He was of the Protestant faith, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Oak Hill Lodge 120 AF and AM.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, William H. “Jocko” Booth.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary Jane Lucas King of Oak Hill; two daughters, Rose Mary Christian and husband, Butch, of Oak Hill, and Becky Booth of Oak Hill; three granddaughters, Amy Hunt and husband, Steve, of Orlando, Fla., Brook Hunt and husband, Rick, of Oak Hill, and Kerby Booth of Oak Hill; a great-grandson, Eason Hunt of Orlando, Fla.; special aunts, Maggie Dickens of Vandalia, Ohio, and Stollie Acord of Bolt; caregivers, Henrietta Massey, Diana McKinney, and Joyce Foster and others.

Beulah J. Layne, 66, of Mabscott, passed away April 22, 2006.
Born January 23, 1940 in Patrick County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Sidney Reynolds and the late Sallie Lu Scott Reynolds.
In addition to her parents, Beulah was preceded in death by her husband, Davie Layne, and a sister, Cassie Blevins.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Teresa “Penny” Sparks and husband, Andrew, of Mabscott, Frelon Dean Layne and wife, Stacy, of Beckley, Davie Layne and wife, Angela, of Pax, Sidney Layne and wife, Terry, of Beckley, and Dennis Layne of Mabscott; grandchildren, Mark, Joshua, Jacob, Ashley, Luke, Zachary, and Clifton; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Wheeler Reynolds, Hova Reynolds, Frank Reynolds, and Eddie Reynolds.

Horace R. McKinney
STEPHENSON — Horace R. McKinney, 89, of Stephenson, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital.
Born November 30, 1916 at Basin, he was the son of the late Edward and Nita Mills McKinney.
Mr. McKinney was a retired coal miner from Westmoreland Coal Company; he was a member of the UMWA, and the Mullens Masonic Lodge with over 50 years of service. Mr. McKinney was a graduate of the Herndon High School; he entered the United States Army on April 14, 1942. He was a Staff Sergeant stationed at Jefferson Banks, Missouri; Chanute Field, Illinois; Glen L. Martin Training School, Baltimore, Maryland; Tyndall Field, Florida; Avon Park, Florida; Ireland; England; France; Ft. Meade, Maryland. He was awarded the Air Medal with eleven clusters, 4 BS, Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal, Vayusena Medal, Amer., European-African Middle Eastern (EAME) Campaign Medal. He was a turret gunner and flew sixty-nine combat missions.
Mr. McKinney was a member of the Amigo Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Mr. McKinney was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul McKinney and Glen McKinney.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Hankins McKinney, whom he married sixty-three years ago on April 22, 1943. He is also survived by a son, Stephen R. McKinney and his wife, Cheryl, of Stephenson; a daughter, Barbara Hardy and her husband, Kenneth, of Amigo; four grandchildren, Amy Schwarz and her husband, John Thomas, of Oak Hill, Stacy Cozart and her husband, Bryan, of Amigo, Beth Ann Lusk and her husband, Benjamin, of Amigo, Ryan Cook of Amigo; two great-grandchildren, Christian Marie Gabriell Cozort of Amigo and Kaleigh Nichole Schwarz of Oak Hill.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 147 Virginia Street, Sophia, with Rev. Gilbert Dodson officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

MARFRANCE — Richard Smith, 53, died Friday, April 21, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a short illness.
Born Jan. 5, 1953, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of Margie Stokes Smith of Marfrance and the late Rexford Smith.
Mr. Smith was a disabled Mill Wright, and was of the Baptist faith, and a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Japatha No. 222 in Baltimore, Md.
Other than his mother he is survived by three brothers, Rexford Smith Jr. and his wife, Janis, of Ft. Myers, Fla., Chalmer Smith and his wife, Mona, of Baltimore, Md., and Glenmore Smith and his wife, Sandi, of Rainelle; two nieces, Kandis Brown of Rainelle, and Kim Smith of Baltimore, Md.; two nephews, John Smith of Rainelle, and Rob Smith of Baltimore, Md.; two great-nieces, Brianny and Kaitlyn Ray; and two great-nephews, Noah and Ethan Brown.

Thelma Hurt Smith, 81, of Reno, Nev., formerly of Coal City, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2006 in Reno, Nevada, following a short illness.
Born March 6, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Basil Hurt and the late Enomia Barrett Hurt.
She was a member of the Coal City Eastern Star and the Coal City Community Church.
In addition to her parents, Thelma was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Hurt and Basil Hurt, Jr.
She is survived by a son, David and wife, Debbie; a grandson, Andy Smith; and a granddaughter, Jenny Smith all of Reno, Nevada; and a brother, James “Newt” Hurt of Coal City.
