William E. Whiting
William E. Whiting, 85, formerly of Piney View, passed away Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005.
He was the son of the late Arthur and Eliza Whiting.
William worked at two shipyards in the Baltimore area as a welder during World War II, and was a coal miner for 22 years with Slab Fork Coal Company at Slab Fork.
Mr. Whiting was a member of the UMWA and a member of the First Baptist Church at Prosperity.
He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Richard Whiting; five sisters and two brothers.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 65 1/2 years, Demma Jean Whiting; a daughter, Twila Adkins of Madison; a son, William Edward Whiting Jr. and wife, Shirley, of Stevensville, Md.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Luther Whiting of Auburn Hills, Mich., and Charles Whiting of Terra Haute, Ind., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastors Gary Walker and George Wood officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Tony Bava
Tony Bava of Richlands, Va., formerly of Gunter Road, Beckley, died Sunday, April 30, 2006, in Clinchville, Va. Medical Center. He was 84 years of age.
The son of Italian immigrants, Tony was one of nine children born to Joseph and Catherine Costanzo Bava. He was born on Jan. 27, 1922, in New Kingston, Pa.
Tony spent his childhood at Glen White coming there from New Kingston at the age of 6. A resident of the Mt. Tabor community since 1956, he was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School Class of 1943. A veteran of World War II, Tony served under General George Patton. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon.
Ton was a retired inspector with WV Department of Highways with 21 years of service. A member of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church, he was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. An avid WVU fan, Tony was a member of the Crab Orchard-MacArthur Lions Club. He had been a resident of Richlands the past five years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Clara Dwiggins, Angie Sanders, Francis Caruso, Anna Pannell and Lena Stiner; and three brothers, Sam Pilliteri, John and Charles Bava.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Mary Ann Davis Bava, he was the loving father of Karen Hudson and her husband, Richard, of Richlands, and Joseph Bava and his wife, Diane, of Lady Lake, Fla.; and the dear grandfather of Sara and Emily Hudson and Ashley Adams and Jessica Bava. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. David Brannock officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Beckley. Military rites will be conducted by the Oak Hill Post 3110 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Friends may call one hour before the service Wednesday at the funeral chapel.
Pallbearers will be nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Crab Orchard-MacArthur Lions Club.

UPATOI, Ga. — Terry Lynn Bowling, 56, died Friday, April 28, 2006, at Columbia Doctors Hospital after a three-year battle with multiple cancers.
Born April 20, 1950, at Josephine, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Daphnal O. Bolen Hornsby.
Mrs. Bowling was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Temple Assembly of God Church.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lorie Leigh Bowling; a brother, Harold Dean Hornsby; and sister, Reva Doreen Hornsby.
Survivors include her husband, Major (Ret.) George L. Bowling of Upatoi, Ga.; two sons, Chuck Bowling and daughter-in-law, Tracy of Smiths, Ala., and Robert L. Bowling of Upatoi, Ga.; three sisters, Erma Delp of Beckley, Kitty Hungate of Ghent, Jill Perkins of Odd; five brothers, Darrell Hornsby of Flat Top, Gary Hornsby of Odd, Kenneth Hornsby, Tommy Hornsby, Billy Hornsby, all of Josephine; two grandchildren, Jackson Lee Bowling and Reagan Elizabeth Bowling of Smiths, Ala.

Mabel P. Furrow Canaday
Mabel P. Furrow Canaday, 75, of White Sulphur Springs, passed away on April 29, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Austin Furrow and Pearl Marie Houck.
Mabel was an avid reader who loved to draw, travel, do crosswords and watch Nascar. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who always looked forward to cooking Sunday dinner and having reunions. Mabel was a member of the Alvon United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Canaday, and several brothers and sisters.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son James (Tommy) Canaday and wife, Carol (Sue), of Wayside; daughter Sandra (Sissy) Nolen and husband, Marvin (Shorty), of White Sulphur; daughter Helen Hoke and husband, Billy, of White Sulphur and son Michael Canaday and wife, Roberta, of Meadow Bridge. She also leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 9 great- grandchildren and sister Ethel Houck.

Ronald B. Gunter
Ronald B. Gunter, 78, of Dry Hill Road, Beckley departed from this life Sunday April 30, 2006, at Heartland of Beckley following a long illness with Alzheimer’s Disease.
He was a 1946 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He was the owner of Gunter Electric Company in Beckley, R.B. Gunter Machinery and Gunter Holdings. He was a member of Bluestone Baptist Church at Jumping Branch. He was a former member of the Dry Hill Kiwanis Club, the Beckley Historical Society, the Beckley Gun Club, Beckley Ski Club and Leisure Lanes Bowling League. His special hobby was farming at his Streeter & Sandstone farms, starting at an early age with his father.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie O. & Maude Gunter.
Also preceded by one sister and brother-in-law, Ardis and Homer Lively, and one brother and sister-in-law, Nolan and Charlotte Gunter.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Allenbaugh Gunter; two sons, Ronald K. Gunter and wife, Judy, of Beckley, and Daniel K. ANSTED — Susan Alicia Benger Hawver, 70, of Ansted, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2006, at a Charleston hospital following a short illness.
Susan was born Aug. 13, 1935, at Powellton Hollow, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late P.L. Benger Sr. and Serepta Beatrice Thompson Benger.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond (Doc) Hawver Sr.; sisters and brothers, Martha McClure, Betty Wardrep, David Benger, Percy Benger Jr. and James Benger.
Survivors are a daughter, Jayme Bibb of Ansted; four sons, Raymond (Corky) Hawver Jr., James Thomas Belcher, Richard Kevin Belcher and Derrick Shawn Hawver, all of Ansted; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted, with Pastor Robert Wade officiating. Burial will follow in Montgomery Memorial Park at London.

He was the son of the late Norman W. and Hettie Hamric Loving.
