TALCOTT Jerry Eugene Howerton, 50, died Wednesday afternoon, May 9, 2007, at his home following a long illness.
Born Sept. 1, 1956, at Mullens, he was a son of Goldie Haynes Howerton of Talcott and the late Ralph Howerton Sr.
A disabled construction worker, he occasionally attended Rollynsburg Baptist Church and was an avid fisherman who also loved riding motorcycles. Jerry was always ready to help any of his neighbors and friends when they needed him.
He was preceded in death by a son, James Anthony Howerton; a sister, Donna Santiago; and a niece, Brenda Hufnagle.
Besides his mother, Jerry is survived by a son, Jerry Eugene Howerton Jr. of Lusby, Md.; a granddaughter, Destiny Marie Howerton of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters, Carol Huber of Nimitz, Charlene Adams of Glen Burnie, Md., and Phyllis Landin and husband, Ronnie, of Columbia, Md.; three brothers, Ralph Howerton Jr. and wife, Ann, of Lusby, Terry Lee Howerton and wife, Sherry, of Hyattsville, Md., and Donald Bud Howerton and wife, Michelle, of Sharpsburg, Md.; numerous nieces and nephews; and special people in his life Elaine, Nina and Ashley.
Service will be 1 p.m. today at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor Ron Iddings officiating. Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of the service today. Following the service his body will be cremated.

Martie Ray Kennedy
SIMON Martie Ray Kennedy, 33, died Tuesday, May 10, 2007, at his residence.
Mr. Kennedy was a auto detailer and worked for Domino Printing and Advertising in Gilbert.
He was born Nov. 26, 1974m at Man, a son of Virgil and Redith (Walls) Kennedy.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Dotty Wallsm and paternal grandparents, Jason and Velva Kennedy.
He was a 1993 graduate of Baileysville High School and the Wyoming County Vocational School as an auto mechanic. He was of the Jesus Name faith.
Besides his parents, other survivors include a sister, Michelle Welch and husband, Pete, of Logan; three brothers, Jody Kennedy and wife, Deborah, of Simon, Jeremy Kennedy and wife, Tiffany, of Ikes Fork and Eric Shawn Kennedy of Simon; maternal grandfather, Dallas Walls of Tamcliffe; two nephews, Micky Endicott of Logan and Jody J. Kennedy Jr. of Simon; two nieces, Brieanna and Britney Welch of Logan; and a host of family and friends.
Service will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 14, at Upper Room Jesus Name Church, Simon, with the Revs. William Cook, Bradley Kennedy and Jerry Thomas Cook. Burial will follow in Kennedy Family cemetery, Long Branch, Simon.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. today and Sunday at the church.

Mary Louise Small Lay
MOUNT HOPE Surrounded by her loving family, Mary Louise Small Lay, 84, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 10, 2007, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Born Nov. 29, 1922, at Boone in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late John Ernest and Zoie Wood Small.
She retired from Beckley Hospital where she was a clerical worker and nurse aide. She was also a homemaker and a loving mother.
Mrs. Lay was a Christian and a member of Maple Fork Baptist and a member of Winolia Chapter No. 59 OES where she was worthy matron from 1965 to 1966.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Kenneth Lay Sr. on Jan. 6, 1988.
She was also preceded by three brothers, John Small, James Small and Alfred Small; a sister, Elizabeth Williams; and a half brother, Lowell Pyatt.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Jesse K. Lay Jr. and his wife, Kay, of Mount Hope; a grandson, Casey Lay, and a granddaughter, Lesley Lay Phillips and husband, Joey, all of Mount Hope; and two great granddaughters, Sydney and Tess Phillips.
Service will be Monday, May 14, beginning with Eastern Star rites at 2:30 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, with the Rev. Robert Barley officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Visitation will be 1 to 2:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will include Jack Wygal, Robert Acord, Joseph Lorenzino, Bobby Acord, Jerry Acord and Joey Phillips.

COAL MOUNTAIN Franklin Nickolas Thomas, 71, of Coal Mountain, beloved husband of Goldie (Steele) Thomas, departed this life Monday, May 7, 2007, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va., after a long illness.
Born Nov. 7, 1935, at Landville, he was the son of the late Nick and Mary Thomas.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ivy Hoskins; two brothers, Steven and Harry Thomas; and a brother-in-law, Jay Walls.
Franklin was of the Freewill Baptist faith and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served for eight years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Melissa Thomas at home; a son, Frankie (Denisa) Thomas; a special grandson, Tanner; a step-grandson, Deric; and mother-in-law, Dessie Steele.
Additional survivors include three sisters, Milka Walls of Brair Creek, Elosie (George) Smith of Texas and Edith (Freddie) Wallace of Rockview; two brothers, Paul (Linda) Thomas of Coal Mountain and George Thomas of Oceana; and a brother-in-law, Harry Hoskins.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Glenn Hatfield and the Rev. Timmy Walls officiating. Burial will follow in the community cemetery at Coal Mountain. Friends will serve as pallbearers.
Marie E. Treadway
Marie E. Treadway, Sept. 22, 1918-Oct. 25, 2005. Mother joined God, Daddy and her other loved ones on Tuesday morning, Oct. 25, 2005, at Raleigh General Hospital Emergency Room.
She was the daughter of Charles Wilburn and Bessie Ethel Wilburn Pannell. She was the stepdaughter of Shirley Cecil Pete Pannell.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Walker J. Treadway; her parents; and two brothers, Charles MacRae and Houston Gordon Wilburn.
She was a 1936 graduate of East Bank High School. She worked with the Navy Department in Washington, D.C., the Department of Human Services, and later joined the staff at Beckley VA Medical Center when it opened in 1949. There she became the supervisor of the ward secretaries and the secretary to the administrator until her stroke in 1967 which caused her to take an early retirement.
She was a devout Christian and she and her husband were members of Calloway Heights Missionary Baptist Church since 1952. She held office in the circles of the church and was a choir member for several years, until the time she could no longer take part in the activities.
She married Howard Cecil Fout on Dec. 26, 1936, and their union produced one daughter, Phyllis Jean, who is married to Roy Verdine, with whom she made her home the last days of her life here on earth.
She is survived by five grandchildren, Phillip LeeRoy (Trudy), William Joseph (Arlene), Shirley Jeanelle Jeannie (Don Riffe Jr.), Susan Reanelle (Tony Sanderson) and Thomas Scott (Christina). There are 19 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren; and one nephew, Larry Houston Wilburn and wife, Sue, of Florida.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for over 50 years and was currently a member of Alpha Master Chapter. There will be a ritual during the visitation by the sorority. She was a member of the American Association of Medical Records Librarians.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Pastor Bill Parker officiating. Friends may call noon until time of the service. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.

Joseph Anthony Alberty
MULLENS Joseph Anthony Alberty, 45, of Guyandotte Hills Apartment, Mullens, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at Raleigh General Hospital of a sudden illness.
He was born Sept. 30, 1960, at Mullens. Joe was a resident of Beckley and Iroquois several years before residing in Mullens.
Joe was a 1979 graduate of Mullens High School. He worked for the West Virginia Department of Highways in Wyoming County.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lorraine Lucion Alberty and Jack Alberty; a brother, Jackie Alberty; and a niece, Angelina Clemins Ellis.
Survivors include his sisters, Brenda Young and husband, James, of Bassett, Va., Sue Fuller and husband, Hank, of Iroquois and Debra Clemins and friend, Billy Reed, of Stephenson; nieces, Rebecca Sizemore, Lora Evans, Julia Bryant and Ronda Barker; nephews, J.R. Fuller and J.W. Clemins; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rhodell Church of God with the Rev. Gary Eskins officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.
Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church and one before service Saturday at the church.
Pallbearers will be Jesse Whitt, J.R. Fuller, Tony Miller, Doyle Miller, J.W. Clemins, Romeo Cook and Kevin Cook.
