Louis Angel Velasquez, 69, of Crab Orchard, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2006.
Born Nov. 22, 1937, in St. Croy, Virgin Islands, he was the son of the late Gumercindo Velasquez and Salustiana Maldonado.
Louis enjoyed traveling, lawn maintenance, pets and was very sociable.
He was a retired nuclear medicine technician at the VA Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Tomasa Massey Whitehead.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Patreva; brothers, Pasqual Romero, David and Daniel Velasquez, all of the Virgin Islands; sisters, Tabita Phangyou and Bitin Gomez of the Virgin Islands, Sarita Roberts of Norwich, Conn., Ruth Robles of Hinesville, Ga., Maria Hearndon of Ironstation, N.C., and Juanita Johnson of North Charleston, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews and in-laws whom he loved dearly.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the local Salvation Army in his memory or the Building Fund at Crab Orchard Baptist Church.

James H. Whitt
James H. Whitt, 57, of Rock Creek, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley.
He was born Jan. 21, 1949, at Tazewell, Va., a son of the late Randolph and Hazel Joyce Whitt.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Days Saints, Beckley.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Darlene.
He is survived by his wife, Argie “Bunny” Whitt; sisters, Eva Whitt and Millie Mitchell, both of Ohio, and Debbie Gilley of Virginia; and two brothers, Johnny Whitt of Ohio and Clarence Whitt of Michigan.
Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, conducted by Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints. Interment will follow in Adkins cemetery, Naoma.
Visitation will be two hours before service at the funeral home.
Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, is in charge of arrangements.

BARTOW — Shirley Slaven, 71, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007.

Gloria Jean Walker
Gloria Jean Walker, 55, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 1, 2006, at Teays Valley Nursing and Rehab in Hurricane, where she had lived for the past nine years. Before going to Teays Valley, she had been a resident at the Wildwood House in Beckley for several years.
She was the daughter of Marie Rowsey of Barboursville. Other survivors include two sisters, Patricia Walker of Huntington and Judy Burcham of Cedar Bluff, Va.; two nephews, Dovel Burcham of Big Chimney and Ryan Burcham of Tennessee; and a niece, Sherry Lynch of Beckley.
Her last wish was to donate her body to the Marshall University School of Medicine Human Gift Registry for the studies of finding a cure for multiple sclerosis, which she had for 16 years.
Memorial service will be 3 p.m. today at St. Mary’s United Methodist Church, South Kanawha Street, Beckley.
She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

MOUNT HOPE - Laura Hannah, 71, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.
Born March 4, 1932, at Dunloop, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Bessie Hannah.
Mrs. Hannah was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Glen Jean.
She was preceded in death by an uncle, Warren Hankley; and a granddaughter, Miyako Tomasa Allen.
Survivors include three daughters, Dolly Champion of Mount Hope, Elizabeth Glover and husband, Michael, of Harvey and Eartha Davis Bradford and husband, Gerry, of Mount Hope; a brother, Frank Hannah and his wife, Michelle, of Indianapolis; a sister, Emma Jean Sanders and husband, Clarence, of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Glen Jean, with the Rev. Peter Collins officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour before service Saturday at the church.

Exa 'Peggy' Kennedy Horrocks
ATHENS, Tenn. - Exa "Peggy" Kennedy Horrocks, 87, passed away Thursday evening, April 3, 2003, at her home near Athens.
She was born in Marion County, Ala., and had lived the past 43 years in the McMinn/Bradley County area.
She was the daughter of the late Mark and Georgann Kennedy.
Peggy had been a member of the Church of Christ since childhood, attended Madisonville Church of Christ in Madisonville, Tenn., and was a retired beautician.
Preceding her in death were her two brothers, Orville and Carvel; and a sister, Millie.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, A. Joseph "Joe" Horrocks, formerly of Lansing; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Service was 7:30 p.m. April 6 at Grissom Funeral Home, Cleveland, Tenn., with Minister Kirby Hinds officiating. The family received friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Graveside service was April 8 at Winston Memorial cemetery, Haleyville, Ala., with Minister Kirby Hinds officiating and nephews serving as pallbearers. The family received friends 6 to 8 p.m. April 7 at Pinkard Funeral Home, Haleyville.

Roe Dairell Kirby
Roe Dairell Kirby, 49, of Beckley, formerly of Rupert, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a sudden illness.
Born Oct. 22, 1953, in Rainelle, he was the son of William Roe Kirby of Rupert and the late Eva Dosier Kirby.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lana Caldwell Kirby; and a brother, Joe Kirby.
Mr. Kirby was a self-employed carpenter. He was a 1972 graduate of Greenbrier West High School, Charmco, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his father and stepmother, William Roe Kirby and Norma Kirby of Rupert; a daughter, Alisse J. Kirby of Beckley; three brothers, David Kirby and wife, Bonnie, of Newark, Del., Emmett Kirby and wife, Tebbi, of Rupert and John Kirby and wife, Chris, of Georgetown, Ky.; three sisters, Drema Coulter and husband, Charles, of Milford, Del., Rebecca Canterbury and husband, Wayne, of Hines and Ruth Gordon and husband, Gary, of Charleston; several stepbrothers and stepsisters; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with Pastor Youel Altizer officiating. Burial will follow in Fletcher Addition of Alderson cemetery.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Rose Mary Lilly, 50, of Beckley, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 23, 2003, after a long battle with cancer.
Born Nov. 23, 1952, at Williamson, she was the daughter of the late Dewey McCoy and Ruth McCoy.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Moore of Columbus, Ohio, and Roberta Lanford of MacClenny, Fla.
Survivors include her husband of 32 years, George E. Lilly Sr.; a son, George E. Lilly Jr. and wife, Lora, and their children, Ethan Hunter and Logan Samuel, all of White Oak; a daughter, Badonna Mae Stasium and husband, Joshua, and their soon-to-be son, Ayden Riley, of Sicklerville, N.J.; and brothers, Ray Closter McCoy of Columbus, Ohio, and John D. McCoy and his wife, Drema, Dewey Neal McCoy and Jerry McCoy, all of MacClenny, Fla.
