Henry “Bud” Keyes, Jr., 88, of Barboursville, passed away Thursday, July 8, 2004, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born September 3, 1915, in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of the late Henry and Henrietta Richner Keyes/ He was a retired employee of Associated Grocers, a member of the Kuhn Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder, and a member of the Minerva Lodge, #13, AF&AM, Barboursville. He is survived by his wife, Ada Morris Keyes; two daughters and one son-in-law, Pam Keyes Heaton and her husband Jim of Johnson City, Tenn., and Kaye Keyes of Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren, Tiffany Strasser (Nick), Lori DeVault (Gerald) and Jamee Roberts (Joe); four great-grandchildren, Jack and Max DeVault, Josie Roberts and Summer Strasser; brother-in-law and his wife Gene and Bobbie Morris of Huntington. The family would also like to thank his caregivers, Cathy Crabtree, Connie Young, Amy Clark, Sharon Bledsoe, Trella Epperson and Kelly Marcum, and good friends, Hunter and Phyllis Stanley. Charles Allen Rakes Jr.
Charles Allen Rakes, Jr, 64, of Huntington passed away Thursday, July 8, 2004, at St Mary's Medical Center. He was born in Wayne County, the son of the late Charles Allen Sr and Effie Anderson Rakes. He is survived by his wife Shelva Adkins Rakes; two sons, Henry Rakes of Huntington and Kenneth Alien Rakes of Ironton; one daughter, Samantha Lawson of Huntington. Also surviving are his grandchildren Kathy Rakes, John Lawson and Chris Rakes, and a great-grandchild, Taylor Lawson; two sisters, Annie Giscomb of Huntington and Jean Whishome of Tennessee; and one brother, Ernest Rakes of Lavalette. Marilyn Ann Edmonds, 72, of Huntington, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 8, 2004, at St Mary's Medical Center after a short illness. She was born February 17, 1932, to the late Lon and Luvenia Poynter. She was a graduate of Huntington East High School She was a retired employee of C&P Telephone Company with 32 years of service and a member of the West Virginia Telephone Pioneers. She was a member of Oak Hill United Brethren Independent Church. Marilyn was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald Poynter and Roland Poynter. She is survived by her devoted husband of 46 years, Vernon Edmonds; three loving daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Gregg Childers of Huntington, Lisa and Dr. Bradley Henry of Hurricane, and Sherry and Mark Call of Barboursville; sister Dessie Nichols of Huntington; sister and brother-in-law, Gayle and Doyl Chapman of Columbus, Ohio, brother and sister-in-law, William “Bill” and Sue Poynter of Proctorville, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Betty Poynter and Kathy Poynter, brother-in-law and wife, Carroll and Ann Edmonds, all of Barboursville; eight adoring grandchildren Kristi, Brittani, and Kayla Childers, Justin and Andrew Henry, and Taylor, Madison. and Chandler Call; a special great-granddaughter, Makenna Bowen; and a host of friends and relatives. Ronald Russell Scarberry
Ronald Russell Scarberry, 58, loving husband to Joana Kristy (Sliger) Scarberry for 33 years, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at home in Ona, following a year-and-a-half-long battle with cancer. He was co-owner of Landscaping by Hillcrest. Born September 3, 1945, in Proctorville, Ohio, to Russell and Lanier Scarberry, Ron graduated from Fairland High School and served with the U.S. Air Force in Spokane, Washington and Okinawa, Japan from 1965 through 1969. He retired from GTE Telephone Company with 28 years of service. Ron was an avid horse enthusiast, and along with his wife and parents-in-law, Thomas and Edna Mae Sliger, operated Hillcrest Stables where he met and befriended hundreds of equestrians and their horses. He was also very fond of leisure water sports, including white water rafting, canoeing and boating. Ron and Kristy loved to travel and made the eastern seaboard, west coast and southern beaches, Florida, Hawaii, Alaska and British Columbia, Canada some of their favorite destinations.
In addition to Kristy, Ron's best friend, he is survived by a son Thomas S. Scarberry and his wife Gemma of Ona. He is also survived by brother-in-law and friend, Thomas “Tommy” and Carolyn Sliger of Charlotte, North Carolina, very dear friend and co-worker, Carletta S. Morgan and long time friend, Jennifer L Ball, both of Ona, and barn buddy, Cathy Lawson of Barboursville. One of Ron's great-greatest sources of pride and blessing was being “PawPaw”” to his grandchildren, Savannah McKenzie Scarberry, 4, and Dakota Jordan “DJ” Scarberry, 2. The children spent lots of time with their Pawpaw despite their young lives. They were the highlight of his life.
Ron Scarberry will not only be greatly missed by his wife and family, but also by a host of friends and neighbors, his church family, co-workers and customers from across the tri-state. Claude Ernest Legg, 75, of Milton W.Va., went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, July 10, 2004, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by Pastor Ray Sovine. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born January 12, 1929, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late Edward Ernest Legg and Virginia Lee Bayless Legg. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Martha Jane Pauley Legg; two sons, Claude Ernest Legg Jr. and Baby Boy Legg, and one sister, Adele Legg Miller. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving 20 years, and he also retired from Cabell County Commission as an administrative assistant He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and John J. Bourn II and Lee Ann and Randy Black all of Milton; one son, Mike Legg of Milton; one sister, Phyllis Piccini of Miami, Fla.; two brothers, Lloyd Legg of Glenwood, WVa., and Wayne Legg of Milton; four grandchildren, Mandy Chapman and her husband Bryan, Ashley Black, Laura Bourn and Christy Bourn; and three great-grandchildren Kyndall Chapman, Madyson Chapman and Hunter Black. Raymond Garcia, 81, of Milton, husband of Rena Blankenship Garcia, died Saturday, June 26, 200.4, at his residence. A memorial service was held Friday, July 2, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Father Bert Valdes officiating. Inurement will be at a later date at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, Calif. Ray was born July 17, 1922, in Frederick Colo., a son of the late Max and Josephine Montez Garcia. He was also preceded in death by his beloved Chrisina Renay; sisters, Matilda Vigil, Elsie Beaubien and Rita Rowley; brothers, Max and Rueben Garcia. Ray served as a Pharmacist Mate in the Navy during World War II and as a military Police in the Army during the Koren Campaign. He was a member of the American Legion Post 139, Milton and the DAV, and retired from Chemical Leaman Tank Lines. Along with his wife, Ray is survived by his three daughters and son-in-laws, Anita and Russell Copodonna and granddaughters Brittney and Jeni of Milton, Lisa and Randy Park and children Kimberly and Kevin of Phelan, Calif., Karen and David Hall and children Taylor and Trevor of Richmond, Ind.; two sons, Darrin Garcia at home and Raymond Garica II of Las Vegas, Nev., and granddaughter Kayla Garcia of Riverside, Calif.; stepsons, Dana Tyler of Milton and Dwight Tyler of St. Albans; three brothers, Ted Garcia of La Mirada, Calif., Tony Garcia and Frank Garcia of San Bruno, Calif.; his loving sister, Doris Childers of Burney, Calif.; godchildren, Raymond Pacheco, Antonette Ellis, Rebecca Deutch and Heather Hutchinson.

Gary Lee Mansfield, 37, of Jacksonville, Florida, formerly of Barboursville, passed away Saturday, June 26, 2004, in Florida. He was born September 24, 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of Helen Browning Mansfield of Barboursville and Larry T. Mansfield of Huntington. He was a former employee of Kirklands. He is also survived by one brother, Carl Joseph Mansfield of Barboursville.

Elmer Orlando Ball, 90, of Kilgore Creek, Milton went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 29, 2004 after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 3, 2004 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with the Rev. Joe Dolen and the Rev. James Jobe officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born March 21, 1914 in Milton, WV, a son of the late Otta and Fannie Nicholas Ball. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Dorkas Ball Gill; sister, Leona Vititoe and brother, Cecil Ball.
He was a former employee of Harshbarger Milling Co. and retired from Blenko Glass Co. He was also a member and trustee of Good Hope Baptist Church.

Raymond Donald Hodges, 43, of Hurricane, formerly of Baltimore, Maryland, died Monday, June 28, 2004, at the home of his fiancee, Tina Ellison.
He was employed by William T. Burnett and Co. of Baltimore.
Surviving: daughters, Christina Hodges and Jessica Hodges; sisters, Marie Weaverling and Angel Truffer, all of Baltimore; grandparents, Elizabeth and Meryl Potter of L'ance, Michigan.

Bertha Lively Riddle
Bertha Lively Riddle, 70, of Scott Depot died June 20, 2004, at home following a long illness.
Born February 18, 1934 in St. Albans, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Edward and Bertha Mae Johnson Lively. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Joyce Oberle, and a sister, Flora Mae Erwin.
She was a member of Abney Street Church of God, St. Albans, and was a forerm Girl Scout leader. She and her husband were owners of Riddle Masonry and are the owners of Teays Valley Mini Storage.
Surviving: husband of 52 years, Lee Riddle; daughters and a son-in-law, Janet and Jerry Brightwell of St. Albans, and Jackie Thomas of Hurricane; son and his wife, Joseph Lee and Margie Riddle of Hurricane, sisters, Lola Nester of Scot Depot and Opal Bumgardner of St. Albans; brother, Joseph Lively of Scott Depot; grandchildren, James L. McCormick II, Janet Leigh Vannatter and Jonathan David Oberle, all of whom she raised, Justin Lee Riddle, Jacinda Anne Thomas, Shelly Denise Riddle and Brian Lee Riddle; seven great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, June 25, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Jack A.C. Lawrence officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Mary V. Welch
Mary V. Shelton Welch, 93, of Hurricane, formerly of Huntington, died Monday, June 21, 2004, in SunBridge of Putnam following a short illness.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hurricane.
Surviving: son, Donald E. Shelton and wife, Kay, of Leesburg, Florida; daughter, Patricia Shelton Hogsett and husband, Charles, of Hurricane; grandchildren, Becky, Chuck, Steve and Joe; seven great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, June 24, 2004, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Dr. Charles Hendricks and the Rev. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington.
Winnie K. Cremeans
Winnie Katherine Woody Cremeans, 95, of Scott Depot died June 23, 2004.
Born April 4, 1909 in Mason County, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Sarah Edith Moses Woody. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Rev. John Bailey Cremeans, infant daughter, Betty Jean Cremeans, sisters, Irene Brumfield, Wilma Holley and Glenna Woody, brothers, Henry Woody, Charles Woody, Woodrow “Ted” Woody and Garland Woody, son-in-law, Clyde “Jack” Reynolds, and grandson-in-law, Jerry M. Black.
Winnie and her husband pastored many churches from huntington to Charleston and in the earlier years she operated a small grocery store in Milton while he served the church.
Surviving: daughter, Louise Reynolds of Milton; son, Dr. Charles “Chuck” Cremeans of Springfield, Missouri; brother, George Woody Jr. of Duluth, Minnesota; grandchildren, carolyn Black, Betty Jean Reynolds, Kristin Donovan, the Rev. John C. Cremeans and the Rev. Donald “Buddy” Cremeans; great-grandchildren, Jeff Black, Kelly Spencer, Kristi and Katie Donovan, Allison, Emily, John Bailey, Drew, Grace, Devin, and natalie Cremeans; great-great-grandchildre, Caitlin and Jonathan Black.
Service was held Monday, June 28, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Bruce Young, the Rev. David Ashworth and the Rev. Larry Woody officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.
Ruby P. Childress
Ruby P. Childress, 85, of Hurricane, formerly of Marietta, Georgia and Henderson, North Carolina, died June 26, 2004.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William J. and Sarah Slaughter Carter, and her husband, Emory “Buddy” Childress.
Ruby was a devoted wife, mother and the eldest of five siblings, living most o fher adult life in South Park, Kanawha City. Most recently she was an active member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Henderson NC.
Surviving: sons and daughters-in-law, Rid and Malinda Childress of Marietta, Georgia, Bill and Ruby Childress of Henderson, North Carolina, Sam Childress of Honalulu, and John and Bethann Childress of Swanton, Ohio; sisters, Dolly Gray of Cross Lanes, Estelle Toon of Cross Lanes, Clo Robertson of Belle, and Ann Robertson of Oceanside, California; grandchildren, Kristen Childress of Milton, Jordan Childress of Swanton, Ohio, Joshua Childress of Swanton, and Andy Childress and wife, Shannon of Portsmouth, Virginia; one great-grandchild, erin Childress of Portsmouth.

Gordon Harrison, 88, of Eleanor died June 26, 2004, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
He was retired from Monsanto with 33 years of service and was an Air Force veteran of World War II.

Glenn Mark Graham, 80, of Huntington, W.Va, formerly of Ashland Ky, passed from this life Thursday, June 24,2004, in the Huntington VA Medical Center after a brief illness. Glenn was born Feb. 18, 1924, in Huntington. He served as a minister of the gospel in The Church of Christ for many years and retired from C&O Railway working as a machinist. He was a veteran of the U.S Army. He leaves behind his wife, Evelyn Graham, and four children: three daughters, Glenda Demonbren and her husband Steve of San Antonio, Texas , Becky Davis and her husband Curt of Barboursville, W.Va., and Debbie Dahler and her husband Gil of Lavalette, W.Va, and one son, Glenn Graham and his wife Rosemary from Atlanta, Ga. Jane Lambert of Culloden and Venesa G. Smith of Charleston W Va, one brother, Vernon D. Vernon Mills
Mr. Vernon Mills, 78, of Barboursville, went to heaven on Saturday, June 26, 2004. He was born July 29,1925, in Cabell County, a son of the late Edmond and Meral Hale Mills. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Enoch Mills. Vernon was a member of Steele Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a sergeant in the U.S Army with the 285 Engineers during World War II. He was a retired INCO employee with 40 years of service. Vernon is survived by his wife of S7 years, Janice L Nash Mills; three sisters, Dorthy Brown, Beatrice Simpkins and Delores Perry, and two brothers Dennis Mills and Larry Mills. Also surviving are one daughter, Karen Sue Walters and her husband Jack; four sons, Robert V Mills, Roger P. Mills and his wife Susan, Timothy A. Mills and his wife “Mernie” and Clinton B. Mills and his wife Teresa; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Services were conducted at 1 pm June 29, 2004 at Wallace Funeral Home with the Rev Ralph Sager, Dr Ed Grant and Dr Chuck Pullins officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Shane Mills, Travis Mills, Ryan Walters, Tracy Blake, Jason Nash, Art Green, Duane Ruggier and Dennis Smith.
