Albert 'Rusty' Blaylock
Albert "Rusty" Blaylock, 81, of Purity Hill, Eccles, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.
Born May 31, 1919, in Lee County, Va., he was the son of the late Charlie H. and Sallie Ronald Blaylock.
Mr. Blaylock spent his childhood in Lee County and Harlan, Ky., before settling at the age of 17 in Eccles, where he spent the rest of his life. He was a retired coal miner, last working for Westmoreland Coal Co. for 45 years.
He was a member of Eccles First Baptist Church and UMWA District 29, Local 5770, where he was president at the time of his death.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nila Salley Blaylock, on April 3, 1999; and a son, Dennis Blaylock.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include a son, Danny Blaylock and his wife, Joyce, of Eccles; a daughter, Jane Terry and her husband, Ronald, of Huntington; and two grandsons, Brent Terry and Rusty Blaylock.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Gary Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Tommy McGinnis, Lance Smith, James Bailey, Ronnie O'Neal, Steve McGhee, Jessie Acord and Gene Davis.

Sara 'Sallie' Price-Burdette
Sara "Sallie" Katheryn Price-Burdette, 48, of Beckley, entered into a new life on Monday, Oct. 9, 2000.
Born July 4, 1952, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Halbert D. "Hal" Price II and Lois Gunter Price of Beckley.
Sallie spent her childhood on her parents' farm at Oak Grove. She was a 1970 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, and attended Concord College and West Virginia University. She was a resident of Richmond, Va., for a number of years and was employed as a supervisor of Adva Care. She returned to the Oak Grove community in 1994.
She was a former owner of Home Alone Critter Care and Food For Thought on Main Street in Beckley. She was a member of United Methodist Temple. She was an avid reader and will be remembered as a great lover of animals. She enjoyed outdoor activities, especially spending time on the Greenbrier River with her husband.
She will join her family members who have passed before her: her paternal grandparents, Halbert D. and Golden Price Sr.; her maternal grandfather, Paul Gunter; and several aunts and uncles.
She leaves to celebrate fond memories: her husband and best friend, Larry; a brother, Halbert "Bert" Price III and his wife, Jane; her maternal grandmother, Thelma Gunter of Mabscott; her father and mother-in-law, Paul and Jerri Burdette; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Dan, Christy, Rob and Jen; nieces and nephews; Rachel, Derek, Ashley, Brooks, Mary and Allie; stepniece, Jill; great-stepniece, Morgan; aunts and uncles, Mary Bailey, Joyce and Gene Wickline, John Kelly Price, with whom she shared her birthdate, and Ann Price Singer; special childhood friends, Marsha Starr and Kyra Otte; many cousins and extended family members; and by her pets, Charlotte, Drifter, Tess and Annie.
A celebration of her life will be 2 p.m. Thursday at her home on Halbert Lane (off Cleveland School Road) in her yard looking outward toward the trees with the Rev. Dan Johnson celebrating and Jon Schwitzerlette offering a ministry in music.

Juanita E. Lester
Juanita Elizabeth Lester, 72, of Beckley, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at her residence.
Born May 25, 1928, in Lamar, Okla., she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Katie Holt Jay.
Mrs. Lester was a dedicated mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Edwards; her second husband, Ronald J. Lester; two sisters, Hazel and Ozema Simpson; and a brother, Joe Jay.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Sexton of Beckley; two grandsons, Shannon Karl and his wife, Karen, and Christopher Sexton, all of Beckley; a foster granddaughter, Virginia Robinson; three great-grandchildren, Briana and Tyler Karl and Victoria Robinson, all of Beckley; three brothers, Jessie Jay of California, Jack Jay of Nevada and Junior Jay and his wife, Faye, of Wichita, Kan.; and two sisters, Geneva Morawitz of Garrett, Ariz., and Susie Worley of California.
Services will be noon Thursday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Ken Overdorf officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Robert 'Bob' Matheny
PRINCETON - Robert H. "Bob" Matheny, 74, of 210 College Ave., died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at Princeton Community Hospital.
Born Feb. 22, 1926, in Princeton, he was the son of the late Wallace Reid and Thelma Jenkins Matheny.
Mr. Matheny retired in 1993 after 18 yeas of service as pharmacy director for Bluefield Regional Medical Center. He was a 1943 graduate of Lewisburg High School, attended Greenbrier Military School for one year and continued his education at West Virginia University. He received his degree from the WVU School of Pharmacy in 1949. He worked for Hickman's Pharmacy in Princeton for 15 years following graduation. He then moved on to become owner and operator of Hankla's Pharmacy in Bluefield before moving to BRMC as pharmacy director in 1975.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Princeton. He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Fincastle Country Club in Bluefield. He was a 50-year member of Greenbrier Masonic Lodge No. 42, Lewisburg, Princeton Chapter No. 44, Royal Arch Masons, Bluefield Commandery No. 19, Knights Templar, and the Beni Kedem Shrine Temple in Charleston. He was also a member of Princeton Elks Lodge No. 1459 and Princeton Moose Lodge No. 1521.
His first wife, Nancy Imhoff Matheny, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Whalen Matheny; a sister, Ester "Chuck" Matheny, a brother, James R. "Butch" Matheny and a sister-in-law, Jane Matheny, all of Lewisburg; a niece, Amy M. Churilla and her husband, Jeff, and a nephew, Reid Matheny, all of Endicott City, Md.; a brother-in-law, Charles Matthews, and a niece, Melinda Brinza and her children, Clayton and Matthew, all of Mountain Home, Ariz.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home, Princeton, with the Rev. Clifford Schell officiating. Burial will follow in Monte Vista Park cemetery, Green Valley.

James Edward Pugh
James Edward Pugh, 73, of Grear Lane, Eccles, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness.
Born Jan. 21, 1927, in Eccles, he was the son of the late Frank Arthur and Mary Alice McGhee Pugh.
Mr. Pugh was a lifelong resident of Eccles. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
He retired in 1983 from Valley Bell Dairy and also worked for Broughton and Blossom dairies in Beckley. He was a member of Teamsters Local 175. He attended Eccles Church of God and enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, in 1977; a son, Johnathan Wayne Pugh, in August 1999; a brother, Frank Arthur Pugh, in 1939; and a sister, Sally Pugh Emminger, in March 2000.
Survivors include his wife, Clemma Fuson Pugh; a daughter, Cynthia Pugh Bennett and her husband, Danny, of Eccles; seven sons, James Edward Pugh Jr. of Cherry Hill, N.J., Frank A. Pugh and his wife, Brenda, of Chesterfield, Va., David A. Pugh and his wife, Faye Ann, of Surveyor, the Rev. Randall W. Pugh and his wife, Carole, of Fairdale, Mark S. Pugh of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Kevin Pugh of Beckley; a stepson, Jess Fuson Jr. of Eccles; two stepdaughters, Phyllis Camden and her husband, Bob, of Beaver and Barbara Fraley and husband, Bill, of Eccles; 13 grandchildren: Brian Bennett of Eccles, Angela Pugh Sklute and her husband, Jason, of Germany, Peggy Beth Bennett Lafferty and her husband, Steven, of Eccles, Frank A. Edith M. Quick
RAINELLE - Edith Morgan Quick, 99 years and 9 months, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea.
Born Jan. 28, 1901, in Randolph County, she was the daughter of the late W.T.W. and Clara Allman Morgan.
She was a descendant of the first white settler in what is now West Virginia, as well as the founder of Morgantown and Ephraim Morgan, a former state governor.
Mrs. Quick taught school in Randolph and Greenbrier counties, and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. She was an active member of the Rainelle Woman's Club for 26 years and enjoyed her bridge club for many years. She wrote poetry and many articles on the history of Rainelle and the postal department. She co-authored an article regarding the post office service in East Rainelle for the History of the Meadow River Lumber Co.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers; two sisters; her husband of 67 years, Richard S. Quick; a daughter, Elizabeth "Betty" Fink; and three grandchildren, Kathleen Fink, Michael Morgan Gearhart and Kimberley Hancock.
Survivors include two daughters, Joan Burns and Doraline Moore, both of Rainelle; a brother, Don Morgan of Berea, Ky.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
She was one of the oldest members of Rainelle United Methodist Church. Pastor Keith Shumaker of the Rainelle First Baptist Church was a good friend of hers and visited on a regular basis.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Rainelle, with the Pastor Keith Shumaker officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.
