Charles Woodford Cecil

Mr. Charles Woodford Cecil, of Huntington born July 1, 1914, died July 13, 2004, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. He was born in Lee City, Ky., to MaeRose and Charley Frazier Cecil. He retired from Industrial Arts at Enslow Junior High School were he spent 34 years of his 41 years of teaching. He began his teaching career in 1935 in a rural one room school of Morgan County, Ky., where he did the custodial services as well as teach in the fall of 1941 he came to Huntington to teach Industrial Arts at West Junior High School. The following year he was transferred to Enslow Junior High School where he renamed until his retirement. Mr. Cecil received his BA degree from Morehead State University in Kentucky and continued his skills at Marshall University, West Virginia Tech, and West Virginia University. He served two terms as President of West Virginia Industrial Arts Association and was chosen Industrial Arts Teacher of the Year by the American Industrial Arts Association in 1968-1969. In 1974-1975 he was named Outstanding Teacher of America. Mr. Cecil was a devoted Christian and for many years a deacon and trustee at Lewis Memorial Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alta Eskridge Cecil and his second wife, Claramay Watson Shriver Moore Cecil, as well as his daughter Mary Rose Cecil Thomas. He is survived by his son, Robert Winston Cecil and his wife Susan; his son-in-law, Robert Thomas; grandchildren, Jon Cecil (JC) Thomas, Amber Thomas Reeves, Kristin Thomas, Stacy Cecil Adams, Stephanie Cecil, Mark Woodford Cecil and great-grandchildren, Douglas Reeves and Karma Adam; his sisters, Gladys Cecil Nickell and Jean Cecil Pieratt;

brothers and their wives, Wilmer and Emma Dean, J.W. and Avanell, Charles and Betty Cecil; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted by Dr. David Lemming at Lewis Memorial Baptist Church, July 17, 2004. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Joseph Ray Dawson, II

Joseph Ray Dawson, II, 32, of Peachtree, Ga., formerly of Huntington, died July 10, 2004, in Atlanta. He was born July 14,1971, in Huntington, W.Va. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ross and Hattie Tagliente, Uncle Jackie Ross Tagliente and grandfather, Menis Adkins. He is survived by his parents, Charles H. Jr. and Bobbie Adkins; wife Stephanie Dawson and two daughters, Paige Caroline Dawson, age 4, and Reese Mackenzie Dawson, 15 months; mother-in-law, Linda Crawn; uncle and aunt Ronnie and Renee Armstrong; and cousins Ronnie Ross, and Brandon Armstrong; grandmother, Ella Adkins and aunt Barbara Kenney. Joe graduated from Huntington High School and West Virginia University. Joe was Vice President of South Trust Bank in Atlanta, Ga. Joe was a dedicated and loving son, husband and father. He was an outstanding person with high morals, leadership and caring. He will be greatly missed by family, friends and co-workers. A great thanks and love to Ed and Mary Hamblin. Spending time with his family and friends gave him great joy. He loved playing golf, cooking and travel He was active in various organizations in both Canton Ohio, and Peachtree City, Georgia.

A memorial college fund has been established in the names of his two daughters Paige Caroline Dawson and Reese Mackenzie Dawson at the Huntington Bank, 919 5th Ave., Huntington WV (304) 526-4600, and the Fidelity Bank in Georgia (404) 248-5466. Skip Seibel and Gray Hampton officiated at services held at the First Presbyterian Church, 1015 5th Ave., Huntington WV on Friday, July 16, 2004 . Burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Joseph R. Dawson II

Joseph R. Dawson II, 32, formerly of Huntington, husband of Stephanie Stone Dawson, died Saturday, July 10, 2004 in Atlanta. He was a commercial banker. Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 16, 2004 at First Presbyterian Church, Huntington. Burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Huntington. Henson Mortuary, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Donald H. Young

Donald H. Young, 70, of Huntington, W.Va. went to be with the Lord Sunday, July 11, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Pastor Brad Toney and Pastor James Jobe. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born April 13, 1934, in Wayne County, a son of the late James Oley Young and Nora Ashton Breedon Young. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Trelma Eaine Young; one daughter, Carla Young; five sisters and three brothers. He was retired from INCO. Survivors include five daughters and three sons-in-law, Brenda and Donald .McKenzie of Barboursville, Veronica Bailey, Trella and Roger Epperson, Cathy Crabtree, Crystal and Warren St. Clair, all of Huntington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory and Arlene Young and Donald and Lisa Young, all of Huntington; five stepchildren, Roger Jenkins, Jim Jenkins, Jenny Porter, Barbara Thompson and Brenda Thornhill; one sister, three brothers, 15 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a special friend, Norma Bunch Young. The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of 6th floor and ICU at St. Mary's Medical Center for their wonderful care and kindness.

Joel M. Woodrum

Joel Morris “Joe” Woodrum, 70, of Winfield died Saturday, July 3, 2004 while vacationing in Colorado and New Mexico.

Born March 12, 1934, he was the son of D. P. Woodrum and Ruth Morris Woodrum, and nephew of Kathleen L. Morris.

He was retired from R.H. Peters Chevrolet in Hurricane. He was a 32-year member of the Winfield Lions Club and held many offices including president. He received many honors and awards, including the prestigious Leonard Jarrett (WV State Lions) Award and Melvin Jones (Lions International) Award for his commitment to service and sight conservation through Lions International. He was also a long-time supporter and member of the Board of Directors of the Putnam County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Surviving: his wife of 49 years, Patricia “Pat” Woodrum; sons, Joe Jr. “Woody,” his wife, Liz, and grandson, Joel III “Trey,” Bob and granddaughter, Hilary, Jim, his wife, Renee, and grandsons, Cole and Noah, and Bill, his wife, Lori, and grandson, Alex.

Service was held Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Oliver Hogue officiating. Burial was in Winfield Cemetery.

Elizabeth Bird

Elizabeth Hedrick Bird, 89, of Scott Depot died July 4, 2004, at Putnam General Hospital.

Born December 23, 1914 on Bridges Creek, Putnam County, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Harrison Hedrick and Nannie Ethel Griffith Hedrick. She was a homemaker, a Baptist and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.

Surviving: daughters, Laurel Black of St. Albans and Luferna “Fern” Spears of Scott Depot; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

Service was held Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley. Burial was in Griffith Cemetery, Hurricane.

Ronald L. Hunt

Ronald L. Hunt, 58, of Florida, formerly of Hurricane, died Sunday, July 4, 2004, in Florida after a long illness.

He was retired from the United State Army SFC.

Surviving: sisters, Donita Miles of Mechanicsville, Virginia and Jan Shirkey of Culloden; brother, Ken Hunt of Culloden; four nephews; two nieces.

Service was held Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

Lena Agnes Rideout

Lena Agnes “Aggie” Rideout, 75, of Hurricane died July 8, 2004.

She was born August 27, 1928 in Olcott. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Master Sgt. Robert E. Rideout, her mother, Dona N. Trampus, her stepfather, Al Thompson, and her father, James B. McNeely.

She worded as telephone operator at Langley AFB, Virginia and Nellis AFB, Las Vegas. Her last job was with the GSA operator 141, at the Federal Building in Charleston.

She has left behind her church family and many good friends.

Service was held Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Jim McGehee and Dr. Hendricks officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Hurricane.

Lucy V. Alford

Lucy V. Alford, 85, of Fraziers Bottom died July 8, 2004.

Service was held Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Burial was in Lunsford Cemetery, Milton.

Betty J. Bailey

Betty J. Bailey, 77, of Buffalo died July 9, 2004, in SunBridge of Putnam Nursing Center.

She was a native of Poca and former resident of Dunbar and Hometown. She was a retired live-in housekeeper for 29 years.

Surviving: sister, Mrs. Ruth Edith Sigman of Poca; brother, Bradford Bailey of Buffalo.

Service was held Monday, July 12, 2004, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca. Burial was in New Antioch Cemetery, Red House.

Mary Frances Painter

Mary Frances Painter, 81, of Bancroft died July 10, 2004 in Putnam General Hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of Bancroft, member of the Bancroft Church of God Mission and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Duane Painter.

Surviving: daughter, Barbara Casto and her husband, James, of Bancroft; sister, Pauline Miller of Cookeville, Tennessee; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Service was held Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Red House, with the Rev. Ralph Workman officiating. Burial followed in the memorial gardens. Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Charlotte Virginia Watts

Charlotte Virginia Watts, 80 of Salt Rock, WVa., went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 3, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 6, 2004, 2 p.m. at Henson Mortuary with Pastor Scott Ferguson officiating. Burial in Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock. She was born December 21, 1923, in Cabell County, W.Va, a daughter of the late William Silas and Eva Ratcliff Beckett. She attended Salt Rock United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Frederick H. Watts; one son, Frederick C. and Barbara Watts of Galion, Ohio; two daughters, Opal Jones of Salt Rock and Linda and Richard Peters of New Carlisle, Ohio; special friends Diana and Tommy Ellis; seven grandchildren, Charlotte Peters Laws, Steve (Angie) Peters, Nancy Jones, Darren (Yvonne) Watts, Kim (John) Griffith, Krista (Steve) Schinsky, and Karen (Andy) Tilly; eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild. Raymond Keith Mullins

Raymond Keith Mullins, 52, of Huntington, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2004. Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Forest Memorial Park Mausoleum, by the Rev. Richard Black. Burial following. There was no visitation. He was born September 7,1951, at Ona, W.Va., a son of the late Lloyd Thomas and Mabel Jefferson Mullins. He retired from the state of West Virginia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two children, Tiffany and Christopher Mullins and a brother, Roger Dale Mullins. He is survived by sisters, Mary Frances Cowles of Centerburg, Ohio, Anna Lea Lusher of West Liberty, Ohio, and Dotty Lou Legg of Barboursville; and two grandchildren Arrangements were entrusted to Henson Mortuary, Barboursville. Arnetta Susan Nicely

Arnetta Susan Nicely, 69, of Huntington, WV, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2004 in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Basil Hudson. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. She was born January 11, 1935, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Harlen and Violet Adkins Nicely. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Charlotte Gay Maynard; two infant sisters and one infant brother. She is survived by three sons and one daughter-in-law, Michael Gue, Lloyd and Shirley Gue and Thomas Gue; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Gloria and John Maynard, Shelia Johnson and Regina Jenkins and Herman Maynard; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Wanda Dailey and Roy Jr; she is also survived by her special friend, Thomas Vernatt, with whom she made her home. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Alma Lou Jeffers Thompson

Alma Lou Jeffers Thompson, 76, of Barboursville, widow of Rev. Charles S. Thompson Jr., died Saturday, July 3, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was a former teacher. Surviving are one son, Jeff Thompson of Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Helen Jean Armstrong of Franklin, Ind.; and two grandsons, Bryan Emond and Jordan Thompson of Orlando. Funeral services were held 7 p.m. Monday at Forrest Burdette United Methodist Church, Hurricane, W.Va.; burial Tuesday in Mount Storm (W-Va.) Cemetery. Helen Smith Akers

Mrs. Helen Smith Akers, 91, of Barboursville, W.Va., died Tuesday, June 29, 2004. in Mariner Health Care. Graveside memorial services were conducted 3 p.m.. Tuesday, July 6, 2004, in Woodmere Memorial Park Abbey of Peace by the Rev. Dr. John H. Niles. Burial following. Helen was born Nov. 15, 1912, in Charleston, W.Va., a daughter of the late Albert W. and Carrie Hamm Smith. She was a member of the Enslow Park Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, F.D. “Perk” Akers and one son, Forrest David Akers. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Larry Wilcox of Barboursville. Mary F. Johnston

Mary F. Johnston, 80, of Blacklick, Ohio, formerly of Huntington W.Va., passed away Saturday, July 3, 2004, after a brief illness. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel Barboursville by the Rev. L. V. Cartmill. Burial in Spring Hill Cemetery. She was born June 15,1924, in Huntington, a daughter of the late Theodore and Ethel Meadows Goolsby. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond L Johnston; two sisters, Lydia Mae Arbuiso and Martha Adkins; and six brothers, Emerson, Clyde, Charles, William, John and Ralph Goolsby. She is survived by one son, Harlan (Linda) Chase of Reynoldsburg Ohio; one daughter, Gayle Whitley of Gainesville, Fla.; grandchildren, Scott (Kathy) Chase, John Chase, Kelly (Bill) Meister, Mary Beth (Jim) Clark of Columbus, Ohio, Martin Whitley and Paul (Richelle) McComas of Gainesviile; greatgrandchildren, Scott Chase II, Andrew Clark, Emma Clark and Bryanne McComas; one brother-in-law, Garland (Doralie) Johnston; one son-in-law, Neva Dee Goolsby, and many nieces and nephews. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her for the kind and wonderful person that she was.

Lucy Virginia Alford

Lucy Virginia Alford, 85, of Fraziers Bottom passed away Thursday, July 8, 2004, at her daughter's residence. Funeral services were conducted 2 pm Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Truman Davis officiating. Burial in Lunsford Cemetery, Milton. Lucy was born April 13,1919, in Putnam County, a daughter of the late Lavender and Sarah Ann Meadows Ward. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Tom Alford; seven brothers and six sisters. Lucy attended 5 & 20 United Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Juanita “Pam” and Delmer Chapman and Wilma and Wesley Chapman; one brother, Jerome Ward; two sisters, Delpha Rhodes and Fay Edwards; six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Frank Adkins

Frank Adkins, 84 of Hurricane, W.Va, went to meet his Heavenly family Thursday July 8, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted 2 pm Sunday, July 11, 2004, at the Bloomingdale Baptist Church by Pastor Jeff Sizemore. Entombment in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. Frank was born January 16, 1920, in Wayne County, West Virginia, a son of the late Smiley and Mary Tooley Adkins. He was retired from Houdaille Industries. He was a US. Army veteran serving in WWII and participated in the Invasion of Normandy, receiving a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He was a member of the Bloomingdale Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers. Survivors include his wife, Alice F. Adkins; a daughter, Cheri “CJ” Wiley of West Hamlin; two sons, Jefferson D. Adkins of Cumming, Ga., and Frank “Dank” Sanders of Ohio; one stepson, Fred Adkins of Huntington; two sisters, Carrie Watts of Barboursville and Lilly Trout of Ohio; three brothers, Thomas Adkins of Ohio, John Adkins of Michigan and Jonah Austin Adkins of Florida; 11 grandchildren, including a special grandson, Randall White and seven great grandchildren. Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements.
