Virginia L. Scarberry, 83, of Barboursville, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 24, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center. She died peacefully surrounded by her loved ones. She was born September 19, 1920, in Marietta, Ohio, a daughter of the late Lester and Grace Sydenstricker Edgington. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Weible and Allie Peyton, and one brother, Ray Edgington. She was a loyal member of Cyrus Creek Baptist Church and was employed for many years at Sylvania and Big Bear and did volunteer work at St. Mary's Hospital. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Merle Scarberry; three children, Donna (Bill) Couch of Florida, Ronald (Barbara) Scarberry of Barboursville, and Kathy Bledsoe of North Carolina; one sister, Thelma Ramsey of Florida; five grandchildren, Christian Bledsoe, Stacy Bias, David Couch, Jay Scarberry, and Justin Bledsoe; five great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, May 27, 2004 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Pastor Bob Ray. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a friend and was loved by all who knew her. She gave endlessly of herself and her kindness was evident each day of her life. She was the light in our lives and an angel that lived among us. She will be greatly missed.
George Wilson Adkins
George Wilson Adkins, 76, of Huntington passed away May 23, 2004. Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Greenbottom Memorial Park. He was born February 22, 1928, in Huntington, a son of the late Thomas Jefferson Adkins and Mildred Hazel Ferguson Adkins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was retired from CSX with 42 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mertie Floyd Adkins; and three brothers, Jack Tom and Norvell. He is survived by one daughter, Rosetta Adkins of Orlando, Fla.; three sons, Ben Adkins, Gary Adkins and George Adkins Jr., all of Huntington; two sisters, Emma Kearns of Point Pleasant and Betty Simms of Kokomo, Indiana; one granddaughter, Lisa and one grandson, Jeff, and two great-grandchildren. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.
James Franklin Cole, 81, of Poca, formerly of Nitro, died Monday, July 19, 2004, at Hubbard Hospice House, following a long illness.
He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Nitro, Herbert J. Thomas Chapter of the Marine Corps League, and the Nitro VFW.
He was retired from Union Carbide with 32 years of service. He also served the youth of Nitro as a Little League baseball coach.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford Cole Sr. and Gleyon Cole, and his brother, Clifford Cole Jr. of Texas .
Surviving: wife, Geraldine Baker Cole; daughters, Lynn Facemyre and her husband, Hershel, and Mary Ellen Cross; son, James F. Cole Jr. and his wife, Brenda; seven grandchildren, David and Scott Facemyre, Holly and Julie Cross, Wendy Hatfield, Stephanie and Kimberly Cole; four great-grandchildren, Brittany, Nicholas, Lexie and Annie Facemyre; sisters, Mary Ann Taylor of Cross Lanes and Caroline Ellis of Hampton, Virginia.
Servie was held Thursday, July 22, 2004, at the First Baptist Church of Nitro with Dr. Lawrence Hoptry officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, was in charge of arrangements.

Hubert Glen “Dinky” Moore, 64, of Poca died at home on Sunday, July 18, 2004, after a short illness.
Surviving: wife, Lucille Barker Moore; son, Patrick Moore and wife, Meredith, of Poca; daughter, Nettie Karr and husband, Jeff, of North Carolina; brothers, Eugene “Gene” Moore, William “Yankee” Moore and Roy “Junk” Moore Jr., all of Poca; grandsons, Caleb and Chad; granddaughters, Sarah, Tasha, Kristen and Sarah; special friend, Al Woody; and a host of other family and friends.

Maynard Chap Smith
Maynard Chap Smith, 67, of Winfield died July 17, 2004, at Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
Born September 4, 1936, he was a son of the late Chap and Naomi Richardson Smith.
He was president of MCS Construction and was a member of the Miami Valley Carpenters Association No. 104, Dayton, Ohio and the Kanawha Valley Builders Association.
Surviving: wife, Carol Jean Smith; sons, Scott Alan Smith of Oxford, Ohio, Maynard Chap Smith II of Eaton, Ohio, James Maynard Smith and Phillip Smith, both of Winfield; daughters, Kimberly Marie Smith and Tracy Y. Smith, both of Richmond, Indiana, and Danielle Nicole Smith of Pittsburg, Ohio; sisters, Rita V. Coleman of Mount Airy, North Carolina and Mary Lee Strock of St. Albans; brother, Fred B. Mary Kathryn Pennington
Mary Kathryn Pennignton, 56, of Culloden died July 18, 2004, at home.
Kathy was born October 6, 1947 in South Charleston and was preceded in death by her son, Brett Godwin.
Surviving: her companion and caregiver, John Davis of Culloden; his children, John Davis Jr. of Scott Depot, Tessa Davis of Hurricane and Christy Davis of West Virginia; her father and stepmother, James C. and Georgia Hager of St. Albans; her mother, Mary Louisa Hager of Sarasota, Flirida; brothers, James A. Hager of North Carolina, Richard Johnson of Georgia, John Joynson of Nitro, Mark Johnson and Robert Johnson, both of St. Albans; sisters, Julie Hartman, Marilee Cooper and Kitty Johnson, all of St. Albans; seven grandchildren.

David A. King
David A. King, 79, of Florida, formerly of Eleanor, died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at his Florida home.
He was retired from Cape Canaveral with 40 years of service. He also enjoyed coahching Little League baseball for a number of years and was a Navy World War II veteran.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Spangler, and his parents, C.H. and Ruth King.
Surviving: wife, Wilma “Pee Wee” King; son, Wayne King of Florida; granddaughter, Tina Burkett of Florida; great-grandson, Bailey Burkett of Florida; brohers, John King and Bobby King, both of Eleanor, and Earl “Rooster” King of Poca; sisters, Elizabeth Schempp, Helen Sawyer and Norma Jean Wright, all of Florida, and Mont Rose Asbury of Nitro.

Denver Lee Warner
Denver Lee Warner, 64, of Vinton, Ohio, formerly of Putnam County, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Holzer Medical Center following a short illness.
He was a lifelong farmer and former employee of Goodrich-Gulf, Institute. He was also deputy auditor/appraiser for Meigs County and surrounding counties in Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Dale Dwight Warner.
Surviving: father and mother, Roy and Lola Casto Warner of Eleanor; sons, Ronald L. Warner of Gallipolis and Jeffery H. Warner of Vinton; sister, Brenda McDavid of Eleanor; brothers, Wayne Warner of Huntington and Gary Warner of Red House; grandchildren, McKenna, Aliza and Emma Warner.
Service was held a Red House UBI Church with Paul Arthur and Pastor Greg Blake officiating. Burial was in Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.
Lee Arnold Warner
Lee Arnold Warner, 81, of Hurricane died July 21, 2004, at home after a long illness.
Born September 12, 1922 in Elmwood, he was a son of the late Hobert C. and Macy Sayer Warner.
He was retired from the Union Carbide Corporation Tech Center, South Charleston, with 38 years of service and was a member of Forrest Burdette United Methodist Church, Hurricane. He was a member of Putnam Masonic Lodge 139, Hurricane, and was a member of Scottish Rite Bodies, Charleston. He served his country by serving in the United States Army during World War II.
Surviving: his wife of 61 years, Evelyn Parsons Warner; daughter, Jan Ramey and husband, Scott, of Hurricane, sons, Charles Lee Warner and wife, Jennifer of Sistersville, and James A. Warner and wife, Robin, of Hurricane; sisters, Elva Mae Pridemore of Scott Depot and Pauline Waddell of Independence, Missouri; six grandchildren, Kimberly, Samuel, Jamie, Curtis, Matthew and Eryn; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Alyssa.
Service was held Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. Dan Hogan officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Bobby Joe “Joey” Ellis Jr. of Hurricane died Friday, July 23, 2004.
Born February 28, 2004, he was a lifelong and beloved resident of Hurricane. He graduated from Hurricane High School in 1977.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sally Ellis.
Surviving: father, Bobby Joe Ellis Sr.; sisters, Catherine Ellis of Charleston, South Carolina and Cindy Moses of Hurricane; brother, MartinEllis Sr. of Winchester, Ohio; nieces, Summer Moses and Cynthia Ellis, both of Hurricane; nephews, Bryan Ellis of Louisville, Kentucky, Anthony Alford of Savannah, Georgia, MartinEllis Jr. of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Jared Moses of Hurricane, and Bobby Ellis of Winchester, Ohio; great-nephews, Dacoda Ellis of Hurricane and Collin Matheny of Culloden.
Special thnaks to his loving caregiver of six years, Dorothy Holmes of Red House.
His body was donated to the Marshall University School of Medicine.
A memorial service was held in celebration of his life at First Baptist Church, Hurricane, on Monday, July 26, 2004, with the Rev. Jim McGehee officiating.

Scott Patrick Connors
Scott Patrick Connors, 17, died July 23, 2004, in his home.
He was born in Trenton, New Jersey on July 29, 1986. He attended three years of elementary and middle school in Jackson, Ohio. He graduated from Hurricane High School this past May. He was scheduled to enter the United States Air Force in August as an active-duty airman.
Surviving: parents, Patrick and Cynthia Connors; siblings, Christopher, Allison and Ashley; aunt, Helenrae; many close friends.
Service was held Monday, July 26, 2004, at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane, with Dr. Dan A. Hogan officiating. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.
Wilbur H. Winter Sr.
Wilbur H. Winter Sr., 82, of Nitro died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
He lived most of his life in Nitro and Putnam County. He was a Christian and attended Rock Branch Independent Church. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and a member of the Nitro Masonic Lodge No. 170 AF & AM and also was past master of the Nitro Lodge. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Charleston and also a member of the Beni Kedem Shrine Temple of Charleston, where he played in the Oreintal Band. He was a driver for the Shriners Van that went to the various Shriners Hospitals for Children.
He was retired from Union Carbide Institute Plant, where he wads an insulator foreman with 40 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline E. Bonnett Winter, and son, Wilbur “Butch” Winter Jr.
Surviving: daughter, Judy Walker of Hurricane; sons, Bill Winter of Salem, Virginia and Thomas Winter of St. Albans; brother, Curtis Winter of Poca; sister, Ruth Forbes of St. Albans; grandchildren, Jamie Martin, Jeni Trivett, Kimberly Shirkey, Lory, Chris, Kelly and Julia Winter; nine great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at Rock Branch Independent Church with the Rev. Harold White officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes, with Masonic graveside rites by Nitro Masonic Lodge No. 170 AF & AM. Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, was in charge of arrangements.
