Carl Garnet Meadows

BARGER SPRINGS ­ Carl Garnet Meadows, 80, died at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, in a Hinton hospital following short illness.

Born Aug. 18, 1919, in Summers County, he was the son of the late George W. and Maude Taylor Meadows.

Mr. Meadows was a farmer and a former caretaker of the Summers County 4-H Camp for 15 years. He was a Freewill Baptist and a lifelong resident of Summers County.

He was preceded in death by four brothers; two sisters; and a grandson, Richard T. Webb.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Louise Fox Meadows; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Shirley) Webb and Jeannie Halloran, both of Barger Springs; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with the Rev. Jeff Perdue officiating. Burial will follow in Barger Springs cemetery.

Friends called 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Tommy and Brian Webb, David and Duane Rudisill, Jonathan Crook and Dennis Fox.

Eva B. Penn

Eva B. Poindexter Penn, 73, of 414 Bostic Ave., Beckley, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.

Thomas 'Willie' Pigg

Thomas "Willie" Pigg, 85, of Princewick, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness.

John H. Richmond

PIPESTEM ­ John Haskell Richmond, 78, died at 1:05 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, in a Hinton hospital following a long illness.

Born Nov. 13, 1921, in Meadow Creek, he was the son of the late Martin L. and Aimee L. McCormack Richmond.

Mr. Richmond was a retired train dispatcher for C&O Railway Co., Hinton, with 38 years of service. He was a member of Cooks Chapel Baptist Church, Pipestem, and had lived most of his life in Summers County.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Plummer; his stepmother, Della Gwinn; two brothers, Basil and Kenneth Richmond; and three sisters, Dorcas Richmond, Mabel DeLus and Elsie Mae Pinkelton.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn V. Lowery Richmond; a daughter, Patricia A. Johnson of Dale City, Va.; a brother, Melvin Richmond and his wife, Melissa, of Oak Hill; two sisters-in-law, Easter Richmond of St. Albans and Lois Richmond of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with the Rev. Dallas Peyton officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens, Hinton.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post No. 4326 of Sophia.

Grace V. Rudd

RONCEVERTE ­ Grace Virginia Rudd, 75, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Florence G. Skaggs

ANSTED ­ Florence G. Skaggs, 80, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, in a Charleston hospital following a long illness.

Born Nov. 10, 1918, in Ansted, she was the daughter of the late Emory Mclvin Withrow and Dessa Skaggs Withrow.

Mrs. Skaggs was a longtime member of Antioch Baptist and Ansted Baptist, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, worked with the youth and served on the board of the American Baptist Women as president and other offices which she held during the years. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil D. Skaggs, on July 11, 1990; and an infant son.

Survivors include three daughters, Janice F. Wilburn of Ammissville, Va., Jacquelyn F. Majewski of Hartland, Va., and Patricia A. McGraw of Ansted; three sons, Virgil L. Skaggs Jr. of Rocky Mount, Va., Richard A. Skaggs of Leesburg, Fla., and Ronald Skaggs of Victor; three sisters, Helen Harrison of Dunbar and Annabelle Skaggs and Frances Skaggs, both of Ansted; two brothers, Emory Withrow and Herbert Withrow, both of Ansted; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ansted Baptist Church with the Revs. Victor Hayes and John Larse officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Robert G. Staten

Robert Gregory Staten, 64, of Shady Spring, died at 2 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at a Winston-Salem1, N.C., medical center following a short illness.

Eudell D. Dickerson

Eudell D. "Big Chew" Dickerson of Rock Creek, WVa., died Thursday, October 14, 1999, in CAMC, Charleston, WVa., from injuries received in a rock fall at the Copperas Coal Mine in Clay County.

He was an employee of the Lightning Contract Services, Teays, W.Va., and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Mr. Dickerson was born May 4, 1939, in Cabin Creek, and was a son of the late Frank Joseph and Janet Louise Perry Dickerson.

He is survived by his wife, Diana Quarles Dickerson; two daughters, Bobbi Kay Dickerson of Rock Creek, and Paula Pittman of Naoma; a son, Edell Dickinson, Jr. of Rock Creek; two sisters, Carolyn Dickens of Sharon, and Marvina Zidzik of Fredricksburg, VA; five brothers, Franklin Dickerson of Indianapolis, Indiana, Gene Dickerson of Adrian, MI, Paul Cooper of Buffalo Mills, Penn., Jim Cooper of Walkertown, NC, and Randy Dickerson of Altoona, Penn.; two grandchildren, Jessica and Jason Pittman and a special nephew, James Quarles.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Oct.. 19, noon in the Armstrong Funeral Home Chapel in Whitesville. Pallbearers will be David Quarles, Jim Cooper, Butterball Cameron, Roy Faulk, Freddy Wheatley and Paul Cooper.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Violet M. Hill

SPANISHBURG ­ Violet M. Hill, 67, of 169 Ruble Avenue in Spanishburg, died Saturday at her home.

Ms. Hill is formerly of Mullens.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Bailey­Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.

Mildred Evelyn Laws

Mildred Evelyn Laws, 82, of Westlake, Ohio, formerly of MacArthur, died Sunday October 17, 1999 at Westlake Nursing Home.

Walter George Lewis

MOUNT HOPE ­ Walter George Lewis, 60, died Wednesday, October 13, at the VA Medical Center, in Beckley, of natural causes.

Born March 5, 1939, in Bessemer, Ala., he was the son of George Lewis and Violet Duncan Johnson.

He worked in the textile business in North Carolina.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by a a stepfather, Archie Johnson and a brother, Robert Lewis.

Survivors include a son, Anthony Wayne Lewis of Charlotte, NC, a daughter, Joann White of Cleveland, Ohio, and four grandchildren.

Friends may call one hour prior to the time of service today at 2 p.m. at the Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel in Beckley.

The Rev. Abner Wright will be officiating. Place of burial will be Greenwood Memorial Park.

Hallie McKinney

Hallie Reed Fox McKinney, 89, of 63 Main Street, Hinton, died Sunday in Nimitz, in a care home following, a long illness.
