OAK HILL Sally Mae Webster Grunenberg, 91, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at the home of her caregiver in Mount Hope following a long illness.
Born Feb. 7, 1908, in Mount Airy, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Elwood and Ida Mae Willard Webster.
Mrs. Grunenberg was a homemaker and a member of Jones Avenue First Church of God, where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was a prayer warrior and caregiver to the needy. She was an avid crocheter of afghans.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Anton "Pete" Grunenberg, on July 19, 1995; a brother, Charley Webster; and five sisters, Ethel Legg, Ann Normandin, Minnie Helton, Nell Kessler and Virginia Bragg.
Survivors include two sons, William "Bill" Grunenberg of Oak Hill and Don Grunenberg of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; two daughters, Margaret Lattanzi of Fayetteville and Mildred Ball of Beckwith; a sister, Mary Martin of Rock Lick; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Ralph Shupe officiating. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Van D. Jenks
ENTERPRISE, Ala. Van D. Jenks, 65, formerly of Mullens, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, in an Enterprise hospital following a long illness.
Born Feb. 6, 1934, in Davy, he was the son of Mayme Jenks of Mullens and the late Mack Jenkins, who died in 1974.
Mr. Jenks served eight years in the U.S. Navy and three years in the Reserves. He was an eight-year resident of Enterprise, coming from San Diego.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles N. "Todd" Jenks, in 1996.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Arline Souza Jenks; a daughter, Michelle René Croteau of Pleasant Hills, Calif.; three sisters, Garnet Strong of Mayfield, Ky., and Freda Lambert and Sara Lou Frank, both of Mullens; three granddaughters, Amanda LaRae, Brianna Arline and Hillary Michelle Croteau, all of Pleasant Hills; a special niece, Patty Erdman of Mayfield; and a host of relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Otsego Bible Chapel with Mike Endreson, Mike Cook and Alan Lambert presiding.

George W. Karnes
BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. George William Karnes, 78, formerly of Cranberry, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at a Bethesda, Md., hospital following a short illness.
Born Feb. 5, 1921, in Landisburg, he was the son of the late George Karnes and Elizabeth Short Karnes.
Mr. Karnes was a coal miner and owner of Hills End Coal Co. He was a member of the Baptist Church, Melbourne, Fla., a member of Danese Masonic Laurel Lodge No. 104 AF and AM and a U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Ruth Romanuk Karnes; a brother, Robert Karnes; and two sisters, Pacola Cooper and Irma Baisden.
Survivors include three daughters, Donna Elizabeth Hilliard of Boynton Beach, Willa Dunn-Williams of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Barbara Karnes Wade and her husband, Richard, of Spotsylvania, Va.; a son, William David Holliday III and his wife, Melissa, of Margate, Fla.; a brother, John Karnes of Melbourne; a sister, Glenna Fishmal; two granddaughters, Cheryl Rooney of Syracuse, N.Y., and Alicia Giguere of Keene, N.H.; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Cranberry Community Church with the Rev. Randy Mann officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Mary R. Lawson, 50, of 333 Burgess St., Beckley, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at her home following a short illness.
Born March 1, 1949, in Sandstone, she was the daughter of the late Robert Bragg and Gerlean Bennett Bragg Gadd.
Mrs. Lawson was a homemaker and was of the Church of God faith.
Survivors include her husband of 30 years, Tim Lawson; two sons, John Lawson and Tim Lawson Jr., both of Bristol, Pa.; two daughters, Sandra Haines and her husband, Roger, of Glen White and Kathy Sue Lawson of Beckley; two brothers, Robert Bragg Jr. of Cool Ridge and the Rev. Davy Bennett and his wife, Quincy, of Ohio; two sisters, Helen Stauffacher and her husband, Roy, of Harper Heights, and Margie Evans of Mabscott; and six grandchildren, Kendall Lee Lawson, Tyler Carpenter, Tasha, Sarah, Tabitha and Roger Dale Haines.

LIVELY Cecil Willis "Buck" Lively, 78, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at his home following a short illness.
Born Oct. 16, 1920, in Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Jeff and Nancy Elizabeth Matthews Lively.
Mr. Lively was a retired miner operator for Milburn Collery, having 29 years of service. He was a member of the UMWA local, Charleston, District 17. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Cecil Willis Lively Jr. and James Lively.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Georgia Alma Williams Lively; four sons, Jerry Lively of St. Petersburg, Fla., Jimmy Lively of Mechanicsville, Md., Johnny Lively of Nokesville, Va., and Joe Lively of Roanoke, Va.; three daughters, Julia Gatling of Glenn Dale, Md., Jewell Bauer of Seminole, Fla., and Janet Hall of Poteau, Okla.; a brother, Troy James Lively of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three sisters, Ruby E. Ruby Louise Lilly Norris, 79, of Crab Orchard, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a sudden illness.
Born March 2, 1920, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Dolphie and Martha Lilly.
Mrs. Norris was a homemaker, of the Baptist faith and a lifelong resident of Raleigh County. She was a foster parent from 1972 to 1988.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Freeman Norris; three brothers, Oscar, Karl P. and William Lilly; and two sisters, JoAnn Bailey and Irene McMillon.
Survivors include four sons, Paul Norris and his wife, Darlene, of Beckley, Charles Norris of Richmond, Va., David Norris and his wife, Lynn, of Shady Spring and Dean Norris and his wife, Sue, of Crab Orchard; three daughters, Ella Helvey and her husband, Charles, of Midway, Nancy Withrow and her husband, Clint, of Richmond, Va., and Drema Donaghue and her husband, Mike, of Richmond, Va.; four sisters, Laura Sweiger of Baltimore, Sarah Smith of Flatwoods, Ky., Jean Lane of Beckley and Mable Cook of Cabell Heights; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

SARASOTA, Fla. Pauline M. Painter, 77, formerly of Shady Spring, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at the home of her sister in Sarasota following a long illness.
Born May 11, 1922, in Oswald, she was the daughter of the late Henry W. and Sarah Broyles Smith.
Mrs. Painter was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God, Page.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlos E. Painter, on April 24, 1973; a young son, Charles H. Painter, in 1956; and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Sterling and Jean Painter, both of Beckley; four grandchildren, Shannon Bodkin of Colorado, Tiffany Sterling of North Carolina, Jeromy Painter and his wife, April, of Piney View and Jordan Painter of Beckley; a sister, Mary E. Bergo of Sarasota; a great-granddaughter, Hannah Painter of Piney View; and several nieces and nephews.
