William Michael McCaffrey, 62 of Barboursville, passed away Saturday May 1, 2004. He was born December 16, 1941 in Huntington, a son of Mary Mankin McCaffrey of Barboursville and the late John McCaffrey. Also surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, John and Jane McCaffrey of Columbus, Ohio; one brother and sister-in-law, John B. and Joyce McCaffrey of The Villages, Fla., and six grandchildren. Mary L. Williams
Mary L. Williams, 71, of Scott Depot died April 25, 2004 from a heart attack. She was raised in Charleston and was educated at Stonewall Jackson High School, Marshall University, and earned a master's degree in counseling and guidance from West Virginia Graduate College.She worked with her husband as a partner in Counseling Assessment Inc. and had retired from Union Carbide. She was a board member of the Putnam County Humane Society, and a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Her interests included literature, reading and writing, doll collecting, and bird watching.Surviving: husband Robert; daughter, Ginger Mullins of Scott Depot; son, James of Belle; son-in-law, Rick Mullins; grandchildren, Tyler Mullins, Luke Mullins, Lance Mullins and Shauna Mullins.Service was held Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Bartlett Burdette Cox Funeral Home with the Rev. O.L. “Leff” Moore Jr., 60, of Teays Valley died April 20, 2004, in CAMC Memorial Hospital following a short illness.Born September 3, 1943, Leff was the son of Orville L. Moore Sr., a retired motor carrier for the Charleston Daily Mail, and Margaret Peyton Moore, postmaster at Scott Depot for more than 20 years.He was a lifelong citizens and passionate supporter of Putnam County. His love and concern for this community and West Virginia inspired him to strive to accomplish all that was possible. He was a proud graduate of Winfield High School and attended West Virginia State College. He was the voice of the manufactured housing industry in West Virginia, setting policy and establishing laws that would set precedent for future generations. He served as the executive director of the West Virginia Manufactured Housing Association for more than 30 years. He was a well-respected advocate for the recreational vehicle industry and the safe operation of recreational vehicles, most notably ATVs, representing local, state and national interests in his role as executive director of the west Virginia Recreational Vehicle Association.Leff's vision of the future and his effective leadership contributed greatly to the success of Putnam County's growth and prosperity. As a county commissioner (1977-1982) he fought to provide basic services such as water and sewer improvements, ambulance service, a public sanitary landfill, the expansion of the County Parks and Recreation system, and funding to secure the building of Putnam General Hospital. For his contributions he was the only two-time recipient to receive the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce coveted Mayo Lester Award. Leff worked tirelessly as the founder and has been credited for the success of the Hatfield-McCoy Regional Recreation Trail system in southern West Virginia and beyond.Leff's unwavering belief in the principles of the Democrat Party embodied his conviction that government was meant to serve all people. He loved traveling around the state, speaking to Democrats, sharing his ideas and teaching others about the Democrat Party philosophy.Leff was “Mr. Democrat” He served on numerous boards and committees and most recently as chairman of the board of South Putnam Public Service District and chairman of the board of Putnam General Hospital. Loren Jack Zinn
Loren Jack Zinn, 77, of Hurricane died April 27, 2004, in Putnam General Hospital.Jack was born November 4, 1926 in Kenmore, West Virginia, a son of the late Orville M. and Georgia V. Zinn. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Woodford Steele Zinn.He was a graduate of Mogador (Ohio) High School and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a degree in construction engineering. He was retired from Avtex Fibers, Nitro, and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II at Saipan in the South Pacific. He was a member of Putnam Masonic Lodge No. 139 AF & AM, and loved to hunt and fish.Surviving: his fiancee, Juanita Craft of Huntington; many friends and neighbors.Service was held Thursday, April 29, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley. Burial with Masonic rites by Putnam Masonic Lodge No. 139 AF & AM was in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington.
Andy Turley
Andy Turley, 14, of Scott Depot died Monday, April 26, 2004, in Cabell Huntington Hospital, after a short illness.
He was an eighth grade student at Winfield Middle School, a member of the football team, and an avid fisherman. He attended Teays Valley Church of God and was a member fo the Youth Bible Quiz Team.
Surviving: his parents, Tony and Chris Turley of Scott Depot; brother, Kyle Turley, and sister, Amber Turley, both at home; grandparents, Paul and Barbara Turley of South Charleston, and Helen Dent of South Charleston; many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Service was held Thursday, April 29, 2004, at Teays Valley Church of God with the Rev. Ken Toler officiating. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.
Alice Ann Van Pelt
Alice Ann Van Pelt, 62, of Scott Depot died at home following a short illness.
Alice was preceded in death by her mother, Melva Dell Robinson.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She was a Christian.
Surviving: husband, Ben; sons, Scott Van Pelt and wife, Cheryl, of Hurricane, and Gregory Van Pelt of Scott Depot; father, Leroy Robinson of Scott Depot; brother, Ed Robinson and wife, Jeanette, of Charleston; grandchildren, Troy and Alissa Van Pelt, both of Hurricane, Michael Van Pelt of Culloden, Chad Cecil of Livingtone, Texas , Shana Cecil-Pratte and husband, Stephen, of Lemoore, California; great-grandson, Conor Pratte of Lemoore; special nieces, Brooke Stargill and her husband, Eric, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and Summer Robinson of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Service was held Thursday, April 29, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. J. D. Harrah officiating. Burial was in Hurricane Cemetery.

Larry E. Hill
Larry E. Hill, 49, of Winfield, formerly of Sissonville, died April 27, 2004, in CAMC Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was a retired dispatcher from American Towing.
Surviving: wife, Linda; daughters, Melissa Jarvis and her husband, David, of Elkview and Lisa Flannery of Cross Lanes; mother, Velma Garnes Hill; stepfather, Pete Schott; sister, Kay Lowery of Marmet; brother, Scott Martin of Charleston; grandchildren, Ashley, Travis, Caleb, Amanda, Zach, and Matthew.

Silas Daniel “Danny” Sovine, 49, of Culloden died April 29, 2004, on his farm after a short illness. He was a retired truck driver and a lifelong resident of the area. Surviving: wife, Pat; sons, Timothy Cowen of Culloden, Jason Cowen of North Carolina, and Travis Edmonds of Culloden; daughter, Jessica Benton of Culloden; five grandchildren; brother, Alford Andrew “Sonny” Sovine of Hurricane; sister, Hazel Kozey of Brook Park, Ohio. Service was held Monday, May 3, 2004, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Ray Sovine officiating. Burial was in Culloden Community Cemetery.
Catherine M. McClellan
Catherine M. McClellan, 84, of Winfield died April 30, 2004, at Thomas Memorial Hospital..
She was a member of Judson Baptist Church, Winfield.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, Todd McClellan.
Surviving: her husband of 65 years, Howard; sons, Howard Lee McClellan and his wife, Sharon, of Mount Alto, Jim McClellan and his wife, Tami, of Cottageville; daughter, Janet Meadows and her husband, Fred, of Winfield; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Saginaw of Scott Depot, Mildred Major of South Point, Ohio, and Edna Davis of Hurricane.
Graveside service was held Monday, May 3, 2004, at Jackson County Memorial Gardens, Cottageville, with the Rev. Fred McCallister officiating. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Kristofer Paul Rhodes
Kristofer Paul Rhodes, 6, of Hurricane died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, as a result of a house fire.
He attended kindergarten at Conner Street Elementary School.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Barbara Jean Cooke.
Surviving: mother and father, Jearlyn and Andrew Collier; sister, Christina Rene Rhodes; stepbrother, Andre “Mikey” Collier; biological dad, James O. William C. Coffman
William C. Coffman, 82, of Winfield died Friday, April 30, 2004, in Putnam General Hospital.
He was retired from Union Carbide Corp., Institute Plant, with 33 years of service. He was a member of Winfield Church of the Nazarene, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Nitro Masonic Lodge No., 170, A.F. & A.M.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline D. Coffman, and brother, Harold Coffman.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Geneva Lynne and Wayne Iverson; son and daughter-in-law, William C. and Terri Coffman; sister, Louise Ramsey of California; brothers, Gene Coffman of Oxford, Massachusetts, Wallace Ferrell of St. Albans and Ralph Coffman of San Antonio; grandchildren, Kristin Kerlin of South Carolina and Teri Davis of Culloden; great-grandchildren, Trenton Davis and Gavin Davis.

Charles M. Cruikshanks
Charles Melton Cruikshanks, 80, of Scott Depot died Saturday, May 1, 2004, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was retired from the U.S. Army with 20 years of service. He was retired from the Putnam County Board of Education. The Cruikshanks are the owners of The 35 Diner. He was a Christian and a member of Disabled American Veterans for 44 years. He was a World War II veteran.
He was born on February 22, 1924 at Wallback, and was a 23-year resident of Scott Depot.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Willa Cruikshanks; sister, Gloria Ann Hensley, and brother Harold Cruikshanks.
Surviving: wife, Jeannie Cruikshanks; daughter, Becky and her husband, Rod Vannoy; granddaughter, Kim and her husband, Shane Greenlee; great-grandson, Nicholas Taylor Greenlee; sisters, Kate Mishlan of Belle Valley, Ohio, Marge Jarvis of Montgomery, Sharon Elswick of Fairview, Tennessee; brothers, Clifton Cruikshanks of Scott Depot, Ben Cruikshanks of Glen Ferris, Bob Cruikshanks of Folsom, Louisiana, John Cruikshanks of Scott Depot, Paul Cruikshanks of Scott Depot, and Ralph Cruikshanks of Belle Valley; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Monday, May 3, 2004, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. Mark Jarvis and the Rev. Loretta Isaiah officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, with military rites.

James C. Fletcher Sr.
James Chilton Fletcher Sr., 71, of Scott Depot died May 1, 2004, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.
He was retired from Union Carbide Corp., South Charleston Plant, with 37 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran of the
Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie Fletcher.
Surviving: daughters, Barbara Quentrill and her husband, Lyonial, and Lisa Roger and her husband, Pete, all of Hurricane; sons, James C. Fletcher Jr. of Charleston and Mike Atkinson and his wife, Teonia, of Ravenswood; sister, Ruby Coalter of Nitro; brother, Wilford L. Fletcher of Hurricane; six grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Bruce Young officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane, with military rites.
Lorenelle L. White
Lorenelle L. White of Hurricane died Saturday, May 1, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the former publisher of the State Journal Newspaper, and most recently served as general sales manager for WOWK-TV. During her 25-year career in broadcasting, she was a member of various organizations, boards and committees, including the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce, West Virginia Roundtable, the Education Alliance, the Charleston Chamber of Commerce, Charleston Rotary Club, Putnam Rotary Club, the Board of West Virginia Commission for Fair Taxation, Advantage Valley, and Sleepy Hollow Golf Club, as well as serving as chairman of the Board of St. Francis Hospital and president of Charleston Ad Club. She was honored as Media Advocate of the Year, received the Women in Small Business Award and was named one of West Virginia Executive Magazine's "Top Women in Business.” She was preceded in death by her parents, Loren and Texal Linville. Surviving: husband, William “Bill” White ; daughters, Amber Myers and Jaime Rinehart; sons, Andrew White and Tanner White ; sisters, Loraye Linville; grandsons, Luke Myers and Parker Rinehart; nephew, Andrew Burwell. Service was held Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made given in her emory to the American Lung Association, 415 Dickinson Street, South Charleston.
