Willard W. Davis Jr.

Willard Wilson “Bill” Davis Jr., 63, of Buffalo died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at the Huntington VA Medical Center following a short illness.

He was a Christian, a self-employed carpenter, a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, member of the Paralyzed Veterans Association, member of the Eleanor VFW, the Bison Hunting Club, and a proud U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, having served five tours of duty, receiving four Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, and the Indochina Service Medal.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard W. Davis Sr. and Gertrude Stover Davis Tucker.

Surviving: his wife of 31 years, Nora Falk Davis; sons, Willard W. Davis III of Ocala, Florida, Dewey Dewayne Davis of High Point, North Carolina, and David Eugene Davis of Washington , D.C.; sister, Paulina Ann Parker of Euless, Texas ; brothers, Leslie W. Tucker Jr. of Dallas, Texas , Gary Tucker, Johnny Tucker and Mike Tucker, all of Buffalo; father-in-law, Ray Falk of Texas ; brother-in-law, Dr. David J. Falk, and his wife, Joy, of Island Park, New Jersey; nephew, Phillip Falk of New Jersey; five grandchildren.

Memorial service was held Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Mike Tucker officiating.

Emma Kennedy

Emma “Midge” Wandling Kennedy, 67, of Culloden died May 12, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington, following a sudden illness.

Born April 29, 1937 in Nitro, she was a daughter of the late A. Ray Wandling and Evelyn Hicks Leadman. She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, Bill Leadman, and her sister, Georgie Collins.

She was a retired payroll clerk with Monsanto Corp., Nitro, with 28 years of service and attended Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church, Hurricane.

Surviving: husband, Quentin Kennedy; special niece, Angela Strope of Scott Depot; sisters, Dorothy Slowin of Nitro and Genevieve Hatfield of Scott Depot; several other nieces and nephews and special neighbors, including Erma Stowers of Culloden; adopted grandchildren, Kristin, Leah, Mya, Jenna, Alexis, Olivia, Ashton, and Austin.

Service was held Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. John D. Smith and Pastor John Duffy officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Memorial donations may be made to Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church Building Fund, 3926 Teays Valley Road, Hurricane WV 25526.

Katherine Geneva “Nanny” Mallory Cyrus

Katherine Geneva “Nanny” Mallory Cyrus, 89, of Barboursville passed away Saturday, May 15, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2004, in White Chapel Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Brent Gibson officiating. Katherine was born Jan 17,1915, in Guyandotte, W.Va. She was the daughter of the late Artie Phipps Mallory Merritt and William Cole Mallory. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Hysell Mallory; four sisters, Margaret Cyrus, Marie Hope Allen, Cora Emma Fowble and Artie Jo Merritt Jordan; and a special aunt, Myrtle Mallory, with whom she made her home as a child. Katherine is survived by her husband of 67 years, Hughie Allen Cyrus; one daughter, Katherine Jane McDermott and her husband, William “Bill” McDermott of Ona; two grandchildren, Alan McDermott and his wife Lynda of Milton and Misty Adkins and her husband Shannon of Ona; four great-grandsons, William and Adam McDermott of Milton and Keegan and Kylar Adkins of Ona, two sisters, Billie Cole Pinson and Sara Jacks; two very special friends, Linda Stephens, her caregiver, and Lana Thompson; and a host of nieces and nephews. She attended Morris Harvey College, where she was a chemistry major. Katherine was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church, Barboursville. Chapter #95 Order of the Eastern Star, V.F.W. #1064 Ladies Auxiliary and Silver Clover 4-H leader.

She was a former cook for Cabell County Board of Education at Watson School and a seamstress for Wash Rite Laundry. She was a quilter and will be remembered by her quilts. Pallbearers were Alan, William and Adam McDermott, Rodney Ashworth, Michael “Butch” Cyrus and Shannon Adkins. Honorary pallbearers were Keegan and Kylar Adkins. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arranmgements.

Wilburn H. Triplett Jr.

Wilburn H. Triplett Jr., of Salt Rock, W.Va., husband of Betty Childers Triplett, passed from this life to eternal life on May 14, 2004, surrounded by his family and friends. He was born Jan 18, 1929, in Lincoln County, W.Va., a son of the late Wilburn H. Triplett and Ethel Lucas Triplett. He was preceded in death by one brother, James D. Triplett; one sister, Amma Jean Hutchison; and one nephew, Gregory Triplett. Survivors include a beloved daughter, Jana Allyson Triplett of Salt Rock; two sisters, Wilmarene Midkiff of Pleasant View and Betty Chester of West Hamlin; one brother and sister-in-law, Bob R. and Judy Triplett of Miami, Fla.; one brother-in-law, Bob Hutchison of Branchland, WV.; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Triplett of Pleasant View and Betty Childers of Salt Rock; three nephews Ronnie Hutchison (Kathy), John Hutchison (Tola) and Bruce Hutchison (Cheryl); 10 nieces, Sue Ross, Debbie Pennington (Kenny), Nancy Lawson (Jerry), Katie Triplett, Jennifer Reyes (Miguel), Patie Triplett, Laura Brake (Travers), Patty Day (Lloyd), Laura Kasey and Jennifer Ross (Don); and two very special friends, James Albert Coffman and Cass Hutchison.

Wilburn was a member of the Salt Rock United Methodist Church where he served over the years at various times as church superintendent, choir director, Sunday school teacher, trustee and secretary of the administrative board. He was a Lincoln County 4-H camp leader. He graduated from Guyan Valley High School and Marshall University, where he also received his graduate degree. He was an influential teacher who touched the lives of many students. His teaching career began in 1948 and was interrupted by a two-year term of service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After 40 years of service, he retired from the Lincoln County school system in 1988. He was Lincoln County Teacher of the Year in 1988-89 and elected to the Guyan Valley Hall of Fame in 1994. He was nominated for the National Teachers Hall of Fame in 1988. Mr. Triplett's favorite quote was, “The mark of a good teacher is when your students no longer need you.” Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Handley Funeral Home, Hamlin, WV, by the Rev. Scott Ferguson, the Rev. Cass Hutchison and the Rev. Zachary Bills. Burial in the Triplett Family Cemetery, Pleasant View, WV. The family offers special thanks to friends, church family, family, St. Mary's Medical Center staff of 4th south and 6 south floors and Dr. Shawn Coffman, who helped “Trip” through his illness.

William Epson Smith

William Epson Smith, 79, of Reading, Pa., formerly of Barboursville, passed away Tuesday May 11 2004. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 15, 200.4, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. He was born January 1, 1925, in Ransom, Ky., son of the late John Wetzel and Edna Alice Hatfield Smith. He was preceded in death by two brothers John Wetzel Smith Jr. and Tolbert E. Smith; one sister, Dorothy Nicholas; one granddaughter, April Swann; one son-in-law, Tom Cornwell. He is survived by his wife Emma Beatrice Adkins Smith; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra and Jeffrey Watt of Reading, Pa., Susan Cornwell of Cincinnati; seven brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred “Joe” and Dot Smith of Milton, Herbert and Jennie Smith of Milton, Douglas and Ginger Smith of Barboursville, Frank and Jo Ann Smith of Tennessee, Vernon John and Kathleen Smith of Culloden, Robert Lee and Denise Smith of Culloden, Hommer Warren and Debby Smith of Milton; six sisters and four brothers-in-law, Patsy and Richard Cavnar of Texas , Lorriane Nicholas of North Carolina, Verna “Sue” Blevins of Huntington, Josephine and David Clark of Culloden, Ruby and Don Sowards of Milton, Charlotte Gail and Homer Nance of Milton; two granddaughters Angela Swann of Pittsburgh, Maria Cornwell Bottle of Cincinnati; two grandsons, Michael Cornwell of Cincinnati, Benjamin Cornwell of Chicago; one great-grandson Andrew Cornwell Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Emma Midge Kennedy

Emma Midge Kennedy, 67, of Culloden, wife of Quentin Kennedy, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004 in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was a retired Monsanto Corp. payroll clerk. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 15, 2004, Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane; burial in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Contributions may be made to Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church building fund.

Cline J. “Deadhorse” Ashworth

Cline J. “Deadhorse” Ashworth, 71, of Ona, WV, passed away Monday, May 10, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 14, 2004 at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, WV, by Pastor Paul Meadows. Burial in Arthur Cemetery. He was born April 10, 1933, in Ona, W.Va, a son of the late john Russell and Mary Belle Nowlin Ashworth. He was a retired foreman from ACF Industries, a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean Conflict, and a member of the American upon Post Legion Post #139, Milton. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Pete and Jimmy Ashworth; sisters, Shelby Jean, Maxine, Zenith and Elnora. He is survived by his wife, Betty M. Black Ashworth; two sons, C.J.. Ashworth Jr. of South Carolina and Brent A. Ashworth of Ona; five daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl Y. and Bruce Hutchison of Branchland, Mary E. and Will Ayres of Hinton, W.Va., Cindy Fox of North Carolina, Diana L and John Champion of Willis, Texas , Amy Ashworth of Ona; one aunt Maye Nowlin of Ona, W.Va., one brother Garuld M. Ashworth of Ona; 15 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. military side services were conducted by American Legion Post #139, Milton. Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Ralph Sullivan

Ralph Sullivan, 79, of Huntington, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, May 9, 2004, at his home. He was born January 10, 1925, the son of the late Ben and Doshie Adams Sullivan. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Eva “Jackie” Sullivan; his four children and their spouses: Mark and Kelli Sullivan of Pedro, Ohio, Susan and Mark Ball of Huntington, Steven and Angela Sullivan of Huntington and Teresa and Charles Barry of Milton; six grandchildren, Jordan Sullivan, Zachary and Tyler Ball, Jacob and Jeremy Sullivan, and Jessica Turner; two sisters-in-law, Jewel Sullivan and Patty Queen; a brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Pauline Wood; and many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Chester, Grover and Richard Sullivan, and one sister, Eva Sullivan. He was retired from C&O Railway with more than 40 years of service; a veteran proudly serving in the U.S. Army during WWII from February 10, 1943, through February 14, 1946. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who always had a story to share. Funeral services were conducted May 12, 2004 at Henson Mortuary with Pastor Tony Vance and Pastor James Wells officiating. Burial in Oaklawn Memorial Park.

Noel Max Gibson

Noel Max Gibson, 73, of Poca died May 2, 2004, at home after a short illness.

He was the retired founder and owner of Putnam Home Improvement. He became a Christian in 1954 and was an active member of Bancroft Church of God Mission, serving as a deacon and trustee, and was a former treasurer and Sunday school teacher.

Born July 5, 1930, he was the son of the late John Earl and Dessie Dell Parkins Gibson. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Clifford Ray, Clive Houston and Elbert Hershel Gibson Sr.

Surviving: his wife of 52 years, JoAnn Cooley Gibson; son and daughter-in-law, David and Brenda Gibson of Scott Depot; daughter and son-in-law, Lu Ann and Zach Raynes of Eleanor; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Teresa Gibson of Columbus, Ohio; brothers, the Rev. Buel Gibson of Nitro and Darrel Gibson of Poca; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Service was held Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at Bancroft Church of God Mission with the Rev. Scott Gibson, the Rev. Ralph Workman and Pastor Earl Cochran officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Leonard W. Spangler Jr.

Leonard Winford Spangler Jr., 53, of Winfield died may 4, 2004, at home following a short illness.

He was born September 10, 1950 in Cedar Bluff, Virginia, and was preceded in death by his father, Leonard W. Spangler Sr., and sister, Loretta Lynn Spangler.

He started at Union Carbide in 1970 and was employed by Dow Chemical Corporation as a Six Segma Black Belt project manager at the time of his death. He was a member of Dunbar Church of the Nazarene and a graduate of West Virginia State College. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1972 to 1976.

Surviving: wife, Evelyn Marie Turley Spangler; sons, Eric Todd Spangler and his wife, LeaAnn, of Danville, Shawn Brandon Spangler of Winfield; stepson, Jeffrey Todd Turley of Dunbar; mother and stepfather, Otis E. and Lula May White of Cedar Bluff, Virginia; grandmother, Lura Talley of Cedar Bluff; brother and sister-in-law, Michael Dean and Beth Ann Spangler of Morristown, Tennessee; one granddaughter and one stepgrandson.

Service was held Saturday, May 8, 2004, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Philip Bowles officiating. Burial was in Tyler mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Virgil Mason McCallister

Virgil Mason McCallister, 66, of Hurricane died May 6, 2004, at his home.

He was a retired utility superintendent with the city of Hurricane.

Surviving: wife, Lillie Mae McCallister; son, Charles Allen McCallister of Hurricane; daughters, Linda Ball of Milton, Lisa Petyon and Diane Taylor, both of Hurricane; sister, Saforna Ryans of South Bend, Indiana; brothers, Willard Lee and James Franklin McCallister, both of Hurricane; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Service was held Monday, May 10, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Kenny Knotts officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Hurricane.

Cora Lee Cummings

Cora Lee Cummings, 53, of Liberty died Friday, May 7, 2004, at home following a short illness.

She was employed as a custodian at the Putnam County Courthouse.

Surviving: her companion for 15 years, Gary R. Coleman of Liberty; son, Tye Cummins and wife, Tammy, of Scott Depot; daughter, Tonya Sanders and husband, James, of Poca; grandchildren, Isabelle Cummings, Cassandra Sanders, Brittney Sanders, Zachary Cummings, and Jessica Cummings; five brothers; three sisters.

Burial was Monday, May 10, 2004, at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Given, with Arliss Blackshire officiating. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.

Glenville T. Humphrey

Mr. Glenville T. Humphrey, 88, of Poca died May 8, 2004.

He was retired from Monsanto with 25 years of service. He was a former coal miner who also enjoyed farming. He was a member of Heizer Creek Community Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Humphrey, and two sons, Troy and Freddy Humphrey.

Surviving: children, Gladys Wine of Ripley and Ray Humphrey of Nitro; sister, Doris Cotton of Teays Valley; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Service was held Monday, May 10, 2004, at Gatens Funeral Home Chapel, Poca, with Paul Arthur and Pastor Randy Carter officiating. Burial was in Humphrey Family Cemetery, Poca.

Betty Jo Hall Brady

Betty Jo Hall Brady, 79, passed away on April 30, 2004, from complications. of Alzheimer's. Formerly of Huntington and Barboursville, West Virginia, Betty lived in Oviedo, Fla., with her devoted husband, James T. Brady Jr.; daughter, Carol Brady Tittle; and son-in-law, Chuck Tittle. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Ashley Snowden, her husband David and their two children, Libby Snowden and James Brady Snowden of Lemoore, Calif, sisters, Virginia Hall Krieger of Huntington, W.Va., and Carol Hall Teagle of Lakeland, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Cinda Pike Short of Plant City, Fla., William Pike of Jonesboro, Ga., Tom Kreiger of Huntington, Joe Kreiger of Tallahassee, Fla., Mary Jane Brunfield of Ona, W Va, Susan Gaynor of Columbus, Ohio, Jane White Peters of Columbus, Sherry White of Hilton Head Island, S.C, Becky White Minger of Shadyside, Ohio, Cathy Brady Knapp of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Jed Daniels and Fred Daniels, both of Boynton Beach, Fla. Betty and Jim were married for 56 years.

Betty graduated from Marshall Lab School and attended Greenbrier Junior College. In her younger years, Betty enjoyed playing tennis and later became an avid golfer. Betty was a past 9-hole champion at Guyan Golf and Country Club, Huntington She and Jim were members of Barboursville First United Methodist Church. Betty was predeceased by her parents, Carl “Hoot” Hall and Josephine Hall of Huntington and infant sister, Lena Mae. All who knew Betty marveled at her joie de vivre and love of family. All who knew her will miss her smile and fun-loving ways, but most importantly her family will carry in their hearts her kind and loving spirit.

The family requests remembrances be made to Alzheimer's research, Hospice or Barboursville First United Methodist Church Arrangements were with Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville. A memorial service was held at the First United Methodist Church in Barboursville on Tuesday, May 4, 2004, by the Rev. Judith Fisher. Entombment in Ridgelawn Memorial Park.

Gary David Barrett

Gary David Barrett, 69, of Milton, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2004, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Darrell Huffman Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. He was born October 18, 1934, in Williamsport, Pa., a son of the late Dean C. Barrett and Dorothy Wright Barrett Harper. He was a retired employee of INCO, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of New Life Church. He is survived by his wife, Norma J. Crawford Barrett; two daughters, Tammy Renee Barrett Brinkman of Louisville and Amy Lynn McGinnis Mount of Huntington; one son, David Dean Barrett of Milton; one brother, Richard Barrett of North Carolina; and three granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.

Iva Agnes Camp

Iva Agnes Camp, 82, of Columbus, Ohio passed away at her home May 1, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, W.Va., with the Minister Dearl Hutchison officiating. Burial in Pete Meadows Cemetery, Glenwood. She was born March 23, 1922, in Ashton, W.Va., the daughter of the late Ward and Garnett Hawthorne Camp. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Beulah Gay Camp; and one brother, Lester J. Camp. She is survived by her brothers, Ward J. Camp of Ashton, W.Va., Douglas Camp of Fairfield, Ohio, Willard Camp of Ashton, W.Va., Richard Camp of Carroll, Ohio, and William “Bill” Camp of Prattville, Ala.; and two sisters, Leona Wallace and Augusta Chapman, both of Ashton, W.Va. She is also survived by several nieces and nephew.
