BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Bernard R. Ambrose, 77, of Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at his home.
Born in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Cecil R. and Lola Waugh Ambrose.
He worked for Victor Hosiery, formerly in Hagerstown. He was a foreman at Sylvania Shoe, Greencastle, Pa., where he worked for 10 years. He also worked as a machinist.
He is survived by his wife, Olive Oneta Unger Ambrose; two daughters, Iris Jean Taylor of Waynesboro, Pa., and Linda D. Jackson of Richmond, Va.; three sisters, Marjorie Ours of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Mildred Caruso of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Catherine Bowers of Hagerstown; nine grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Larry R. Ambrose; a brother, Joseph Ambrose; and three grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Everett Powell will officiate. Burial will be in Park Lawn Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg, Pa., with graveside services at 3 p.m.
Viewing will be Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Anne W. Payne
FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Anne Williamson Payne, 42, of Falling Waters, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at her home.
Born Jan. 12, 1956, in Martinsburg, W.Va, she was the daughter of Williamson Payne of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Mary Catherine Cloud Payne of Falling Waters.
She was a 1974 graduate of Hedgesville High School.
She was a member of Falling Waters Presbyterian Church at Spring Mills.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Pugh of Falling Waters and Catherine deLong of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, C. Benjamin Payne of Hedgesville; a grandmother, Elvira Cloud of Martinsburg; aunts; uncles; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Eleanor Payne; her grandfather, Charles L. Cloud; and a nephew.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Mitch L. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Falling Waters Presbyterian cemetery at Spring Mills.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Helen V. Vanmetre
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Helen V. Vanmetre, 85, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at Heartland of Martinsburg.
Born July 2, 1913, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Henry and Bettie Myers Vanmetre.
She was a graduate of West Virginia Beauty College.
She worked as a beautician.
She was a member of Christ Reformed Church and United Church Women.
She was a member of American Red Cross; national and local American Association of Retired Persons and City Hospital Auxiliary.
She volunteered for more than 20 years at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, King's Daughters Hospital and City Hospital.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice, Mary and Agnes Vanmetre; six brothers, Harry, Thomas, James, William, Charles and Robert Vanmetre; and a nephew.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. Dr. Thomas E. Hartshorn will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery, Shepherdstown, W.Va.

Dorothy E. Caperton
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Dorothy Ellen Huyett Caperton, 86, of Charles Town, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at her home.
Born Dec. 21, 1911, on Grasmere Farm in Charles Town, she was the daughter of the late Henry Herman and Annie Mary Robinson Huyett.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas R. Moore Jr., in 1944.
She graduated from St. Hilda's Hall, Charles Town. She was a 1933 graduate of Hollins College, Roanoke, Va.
She owned and operated Moore Insurance and Realty Co. Inc., Charles Town; and was a licensed West Virginia real estate broker. She and her husband also owned and operated Grasmere Farm in Charles Town. Earlier, she worked as a medical technician at Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C.
She was a life member of Charles Town Presbyterian Church.
She was an ornithologist and a member of Brooks Bird Club and the last charter member of Shenandoah Garden Club. She was a charter member of Jefferson County Cotillion Club and Friday Book Club and a member of West Virginia Horticulture Society. She served on West Virginia Garden Club committees was the first woman to serve on the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce board of directors.
She is survived by her husband, Hugh Caperton, whom she married July 13, 1952; two daughters, Ann Moore Cross of Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Katherine Caperton Beckhard of Vienna, Va.; a son, Thomas R. Moore III of Lima, Peru; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 4 p.m. at Charles Town Presbyterian Church, East Washington Street, Charles Town. The Rev. William Everhart will officiate. Burial will be private.
There will be no visitation.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mary Lee Kidwell, 70, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at City Hospital.
Born Aug. 14, 1927, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Bessie Smith Simpson.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis L. Kidwell; a daughter, Linda Dover of Martinsburg; a son, John Arthur Kidwell of Martinsburg; two sisters, Janet Miller of Damascus, Md., and Dorothy Wilson of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; three brothers, Hayward Simpson, Earl M. Simpson and Harlan Simpson, all of Martinsburg; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Wayne Kidwell; a sister, Berkeley Gay; and four brothers, Rudolph Simpson, Clifton Simpson, Marvin Simpson and Bernard Simpson.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Revs. Al Clipp and Thomas Tennis will officiate. Burial will be private.

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - William George Manning, 41, of Harpers Ferry, died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.
Born April 29, 1957, in Colombia, South America, he was the son of the late George and Beatrice Ramirez Manning.
He was employed by the U.S. government with Naval Intelligence in Washington, D.C.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Sharon Ann Brown, 44, of Charles Town, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at her home.
Born Nov. 3, 1953, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of Paul Wayne and Barbara Eileen Higgs Painter Sr. of Halltown, W.Va.
She was a section leader at Halltown Paper Board Co. at Halltown.
She was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, George T. Brown; two sons, Michael David Heflin of Brunswick, Md., and Joseph Calvin Heflin of Middletown, Md.; a sister, Vickie Ainsworth of Charles Town; a brother, Kenneth Painter of Gore, Va.; and a grandson.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Wayne Painter Jr.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry, W.Va. The Rev. Lisa Everhart will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Lutheran cemetery, Bolivar, W.Va.
