NEWARK, Ohio - Hartzell L. Burns, 84, of Newark, and formerly of Harrisville, W.Va., died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, at Licking Memorial Hospital, Newark.
Born Aug. 30, 1913, in Auburn, W.Va., he was the son of the late Rev. John Emory and Rosalie Florence Lowther Burns.
He was a retired sheriff's deputy.
He is survived by his wife, Faye E. Rankin Burns; one daughter, Rhea Dawn Langhurst of Old Bridge, N.J.; two sons, James Emory Burns of Lake Havisu, Ariz., and Larry Max Burns of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three sisters, Velma Allman of Weston, W.Va., Retha Law of Danville, Ky., and Freda Smith of Bridgeport, W.Va.; one brother, Carlton H. Burns of Harrisville; and six grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be held at Rosedale cemetery, Martinsburg.
Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.
Minnie R. Swearingen
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Minnie Roena Swearingen, 88, of Charles Town, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born Sept. 14, 1909, in Eatons, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin and Ida M. Howell Hewitt.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Alben Swearingen, in 1972.
She was a homemaker.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by one daughter, Dolores Swearingen Archer of Summit Point, W.Va.; two sons, Rodney L. Swearingen of Arlington, Va., and Edward B. Swearingen of Montgomery, Vt.; three sisters, Mary Windland of Vienna, W.Va., Helen Villers of Elizabeth, W.Va., and Betty Cross of Parkersburg, W.Va.; two brothers, Woodrow Hewitt of Walker, W.Va., and Harold Hewitt of Vienna; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.
Burial will be in East Lawn/Palms cemetery in Tucson, Ariz.

F. Elizabeth Hoopengardner
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - F. Elizabeth Hoopengardner, 92, a resident of Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs, and formerly of Hancock, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at the nursing home.
Born July 16, 1906, in Piney Grove, Md., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Lottie Heller Hoopengardner.
She was a 1926 graduate of Hancock High School.
She was manager for Silco in Hancock, was transferred to Silco in Westminster, Md., and later to Silco in Manassas, Va. After retiring from Silco, she was a cashier for Weaver's Restaurant in Hancock.
She was a member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, Hancock.
She is survived by two nieces, Bonnie A. Haynes of Hancock, and Kathy M. Mullins of Manassas; and one nephew, Barry F. Hoopengardner of Flintstone, Md.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Asbury Franklin Hoopengardner.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Buck Valley Christian cemetery, Buck Valley, Pa.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, which will be open from 1 to 9 p.m.

Chester K. Fike
FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Chester K. Fike, 81, of Falling Waters, and formerly of Friendsville, Md., died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.
Born March 11, 1917, in Friendsville, he was the son of the late William Hosea and Rhuie Grace VanSickle Fike.
He was a retired equipment operator for Rockville Fuel and Feed, Rockville, Md.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.
He was a member of Sand Spring Church of God in Friendsville.
He is survived by his wife, Iretha M. Bruner Fike; two daughters, Jean Atwell of MIddletown, Md., and Helen Inderdohnen of Rockville; one brother, Charles Fike of Arizona; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Newman Funeral Home, Friendsville. The Rev. Dana Umbel will officiate. Burial will be in Sand Spring cemetery.
Friends will be received at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Hazel Henrietta May, 78, of 753 Warm Springs Ave., and formerly of Falling Waters Road, Williamsport, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.
Born Aug. 30, 1919, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Samuel F. and Henrietta Kizziah Kerns Hornbaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Abram May, in 1991.
She was employed as a machine operator for Alkahn Label Mill until her retirement.
She was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church, Williamsport.
She was a member of AARP and a volunteer at City Hospital.
She is survived by a foster son, David B. Palmer of Williamsport; a brother, Ralph J. Hornbaker of Fairplay; a foster grandson, Daniel B. Palmer of Williamsport; and nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 17636 W. Washington St., Hagerstown. Edward Grove and the Rev. James E. Swecker will officiate.
There will be no viewing.

INWOOD, W.Va. - Mabel Ruth Heavner, 83, of Inwood, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
Born Aug. 14, 1914, in Gormania, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Martin Luther and Ollie Elizabeth Cosner Getz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Vernon Heavner.
She was a member of South Berkeley Baptist Church of Inwood.
She is survived by two daughters, Wanda Breedlove and Dolores DeHaven, both of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Audrey Heavner.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Herbert Glenn Dodson, 33, of John Rissler Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, in Charles Town.
Born Aug. 30, 1964, in Ranson, W.Va., he was the son of Dianne Casteel Dodson of Martinsburg, W.Va., and the late Herbert M. "Dickie" Dodson.
He was a member of Jackson-Perks Post 71 of the American Legion at Charles Town.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, Joshua Glenn Dodson of Rippon, W.Va.; two sisters, Teresa Lynn Kerns of Ranson and Lisa Diane Kerns of Martinsburg; two brothers, Kevin Manuel Dodson and Darryl Wayne Dodson Sr., both of Charles Town; maternal grandmother, Inez Casteel of Woodbridge, Va.; a special friend, Ada Cubbage of Ranson; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry, W.Va. The Rev. Franklin Nick will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.
