Jane Adkins
Jane Adkins, 67, of Milton passed away Saturday, May 22, 2004, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Graveside services were conducted Tuesday, May 25, 2004, in Forest Memorial Park, Milton, with Ernest Pruitt officiating. Jane was born July 16, 1937, in Wayne County, a daughter of the late Garland and Pearl Crockett Blankenship. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Anna Ruth Blankenship, and two brothers, Samuel Lee Blankenship and Karl Blankenship. Jane was a retired employee of St. Mary’s Hospital. She is survived by one daughter, Connie Sue Venoy, and her companion, Phillip McCormick; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael E. and Pam Adkins of Proctorville, Ohio; two sisters, Bonnie Pruitt of Clyde, Ohio, and Glenna Chaney of Gallipolis, Ohio; two brothers, Tim Blankenship of Tiffin, Ohio, and Gary Blankenship of Lavalette; three grandchildren, Matthew Venoy and Yvonne Adkins, both of Milton, and Bethany Adkins of Proctorville; one great-granddaughter, Rhea M. Rideout of Huntington; two step-grandchildren, Jeffery Harmon of Proctorville and Sherry L. Powell of Louisiana; and a host of nieces and nephews. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Jearold A. “Chuckie” Harshbarger
Jearold A. “Chuckie” Harshbarger, 56, of Milton, W.Va., passed away Thursday, May 20, 2004, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, May 23, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by the Rev. Gordon Rutherford. Burial in Gwinn Cemetery, Milton. He was born April 27, 1948, in Milton, a son of Harold H. Harshbarger of Milton, and Dorothy Alford Meadows of Eleanor, W.Va. He is also survived by his stepmother, Violet Finley Martin Harshbarger; one sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Roger Shull of Milton; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Harold Lee and Linda Harshbarger of Milton, and Kevin Harshbarger of Barboursville; stepsister Pamela Meadows of Eeanor; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Chuckie’s caregiver, James Burns for his care and, Brenda, Harold, and Violet for their continued loving care during his life.

Clyde Hensley
Clyde Hensley, 88, died May 14, 2004. He was born Oct. 12, 1915, in Milton, W.Va., to Woodvill Clyde and Mary Burdette Hensley. Residing in Chapel Hill, N.C., since 1984, he participated in the Duke Institute for Learning in Retirement (DILR), Meals on Wheels, Shared Housing of Chapel Hill, New Hope and Stoneridge/ Sedgefield Property Owners’ Associations and the Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church. Before retiring, Mr. Hensley worked as an accounting in Huntington, W.Va., and Ashland, Ky., for nearly 35 years. He and his wife, Yvonne, lived mostly in Barboursville, W.Va, W.Va. where they reared their children and belonged to the Barboursville Baptist Church. A graduate of Marshall University, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II in New York City. Mr. Hensley survived by his wife, Yvonne Matheny Hensley; their three children, David Hensley of Montreal, Canada, Blair Kokotek of Fair Lawn N.J., and Shelley Lounsbury of Stamford, Conn.; five grandsons; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Hensley of Chapel Hill; one niece; and five nephews. Family and friends met to celebrate his life Friday, May 21, at Binkley Baptist Church, Chapel Hill. Mr. Hensley was buried in Milton, WV. Arrangements by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh, N.C.

Helen D. Johnson
Helen D. Johnson, 84, of Huntington, went to be with the Lord Thursday, May 20, 2004, at Morris Memorial Nursing Home. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, May 23, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville by Minister Danny E. Evans. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. She was born May 16, 1920, in Huntington, a daughter of the late John Earl and Emma Hope Bond Duncan. She was a long time member of the Farmdale Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin J. Johnson. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Minister Danny E. Evans of Huntington; one son and daughter-in-law, Samp Earl and Kathy Johnson of Crown City, Ohio; four grandsons, Samp Douglas Johnson, John Earl Johnson and his wife Nikki of Crown City, Ohio, Zachary David Evans and Jonathan Daniel Evans of Huntington; one great-grandson, Sampson Dakota Johnson of Crown City.

Eugene Anderson Miller
Eugene Anderson Miller of Barboursville passed Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at his home. Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 24, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Charles E. Caserta. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born Oct. 19, 1927, in Pine Knob, W.Va., a son of the late Chapahannock Miller and Pearl Gunnoe Miller. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Army and was known in the Barboursville area for repairing lawn mowers. He was preceded in death his wife, Ruth May Carpenter Miller and one brother, Dale Miller. He is survived by one daughter, Deborah Miller Caldwell and her husband Carlton of Melbourne, Fla.; one brother, Byrd Miller of Pine Knob; and two grandchildren Lewis Mark Bowers Jr. and Heather Bowers Perdue. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. V.F.W. Post 9738 will conduct military graveside rites. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington, Box 464, Huntington, WV 25709.

Mr. Billy Jack Craig
Mr. Billy Jack Craig, 66 of Lesage, W.Va., died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Graveside funeral service were conducted Friday, May 21, 2004, at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, by Rev Jamie Jefferson. Burial followed. Billy Jack was born January 29, 1938, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late Homer O. Craig Sr. and Ethel M. Nelson Craig. He was retired from the Huntington Police Department and was a member of the F.O.P. Gold Star Lodge. He was preceded in death by a son Jeffrey Allen Craig. Survivors include his wife Betty Jean Craig; one daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Jim Nibert of Lesage; one sister, Mary Beall of Fairbanks, Alaska; one brother, Homer O. Craig, Jr.; two grandchildren, Ashley Miranda Kearns and James Richard Nibert II; two great-grandchildren, Isiah Kearns and Max Nibert. Chapman’s Mortuary Huntington, was in charge of arrangements. Funeral services were held Friday, May 21, 2004.

Tommy Allen “T.A.” Cogar
Tommy Allen “T.A.” Cogar, 74, of Milton, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington. He was born January 23, 1930, in Webster Springs, W.Va., son of the late Ballard and Amy Rose Cogar. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served as a Staff Sgt. during the Korean War. He graduated from Cowen High School in Webster County, W.Va., and Marshall College in 1958. He was a long time president of the original Malcolm Springs and Ona Little League youth football programs, and was a youth league basketball coach in Milton in the 1970s. He was on the founding board of the former Milton Tri-County Bank and Grant Medical Center. He was self employed as a Certified Public Accountant for 37 years with offices in Point Pleasant and Huntington. He was an avid Marshall sports fan, and enjoyed woodworking, crafting miniature 1-inch scale furniture which was sold at Tamarack Visitor’s Center in Beckley and on display at the Greenbrier Resort. He was preceded in death by a brother, Herman Cogar, and an infant son, Jamie J. Cogar. He is survived by his wife of 49-1/2 years, Jane Maralee (Gorrell) Cogar, three sons, T. Allen Cogar II of Pompano Beach, Fla., Gregory D. Cogar of Barboursville and Lindsay J. Cogar of Huntington; one daughter, Suzanne Cogar, of Irvine, California; one grandson, Tommy Allen Thompson of Meally, Ky.; one sister, Eulajean Gross of Cowen W.Va.; three brothers, Harry Cogar of Lorain, Ohio, Phil Cogar of Cleveland, Ohio and Connell Cogar of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Bethesda United Methodist Church, Ona, W.Va. by Rev Mark Fisher.
Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements. American Legion Post #93 Honor Guard performed military graveside services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethesda United Methodist Church, or the American Cancer Society.

Tommy Allen Cogar
Tommy Allen Cogar, 74, of Milton husband of J. Maralee Gorrell Cogar, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 22, 2004 at Bethesda United Methodist Church; entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Elmer Joe Evans
Elmer Joe Evans, 61, of Barboursville died Tuesday, May 18, 2004 in the Huntington VA Medical Center. Private memorial services will be held at a later time. Arrangements by Klingel Carpenter Mortuary, Huntington.

Eunice C. Turman
Eunice C. Turman, 72, of Barboursville, W.Va., companion of William Dille, died Monday, May 17, 2004, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Additional survivors include a son, Daniel R. Turman of Edwardsville, Ill.; two sisters, Mary Martin of Ironton, Ohio and Laura Childree of San Antonio, Texas ; three brothers, Bill, Bob, and David Gray all of Ashland, Ky.; and a grandson, Christopher Turman of Ashland. There was no services. Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements.

Seth Allen Call
Angels came down from Heaven on Sunday, May 16, 2004 and took SETH ALLEN CALL, 12, of Milton from his mother’s arms, surrounded by his father, brother, family and friends to a place where he will suffer no more. He was born August 2, 1991, into the arms and love of Stacy and Rosella Langdon Call. Waiting at Heaven’s gate will be his maternal grandparents, Joe and Sylvia Massie and Charles and Rose Langdon. He will also be joined by his paternal grandparents, Noah and Hazel Scarberry and Louie and Barbara Ellen Call. He will by sadly missed by his loving brother, Zachary Ryan Call (at home); maternal grandparents, Robert Lee and RosaLea Massie Langdon; and paternal grandparents, Wayne and Helen Faye Scarberry Call, all of Milton. Seth was always surrounded by love from his family of aunts and uncles, DeWayne and Lori Call and their daughter Meghan of Gallipolis, Ohio, Randy and Sharon Langdon and their daughters Aimee and Amber Adkins, Rhonda Langdon, all of Milton, Roberta Chapman of Nitro and her son Justin Chapman. Seth will never be forgotten by his many great aunts, great uncles and cousins. The family would like to thank Dr. Joe Evans and the staff of University Pediatrics and the PICU and 5th floor pediatrics staff at Cabell Huntington Hospital that have been our extended family for the past 12 years. Also, we would like to thank our church family, Mt. Zion Baptist Church at Fraziers Bottom, which has been with us since the day Seth was born. We would also like to thank Reverend Bob and Marceline Johnson for all of the love, prayers, phone calls and visits with our family. We want to thank all of our friends and community for the love, prayers and support given to Seth and us. There are too many to name and we will never forget each one that has touched our lives, as we know that Seth touched so many. Seth was lovingly cared for during the day by his grandmothers, Faye Call and Rose Langdon whose lives will never by the same. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 19, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with the Rev. Bob Johnson officiating. Burial in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Fraziers Bottom. “There are many things in life that we cannot understand, but we must trust God’s judgment and be guided by his hand, and all who have God’s blessing can rest safely in his care, for he promises safe passage on the wing’s of faith and prayer.” - Helen Steiner Rice

Glen Donovan “Shorty” Morrison
Glen Donovan “Shorty” Morrison, 70, of Huntington, passed away Sunday, May 16, 2004, at his residence. He was born October 17, 1933, in Wayne County, a son of the late C.E. Morrison and Lena Davis Morrison. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Eugenia Barnett, and a brother, Carlos Stacey Morrison. He graduated from Wayne High School in 1951 and attended Marshall University. He was a third generation merchant of C.E. Morrison and Son, and he was a buyer for the Creasey Wholesale Grocery Co. He was a member of Minerva Lodge #13 AF&AM and he attended Fellowship Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Phyllis Ann Brumfield Morrison; his son, Donovan Brent Morrison and Pam Cremeans of Barboursville; his daughter, Gina Ann Morrison Crews and son-in-law, Dr. William Gregory Crews of Barboursville; two precious grandchildren, Spencer Gregory Crews and Suzanne Lee Crews; and his brother, James Davis Morrison of Ashland, Ky. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Dr. Jerry Warren and Dr. Ed Grant. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Nephews served as pallbearers. Glen was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Margaret Opal Barker
Margaret Opal Barker, 84, of Culloden, sister of Garnet Cooper of Indiana and Lawrence Searls of Hurricane, died Sunday, May 16, 2004 in Sunbridge of Putnam. Funeral Services were conducted Wednesday, May 19th at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane.

Oralene Joy Caswell

Oralene Joy Bradley Caswell, 74, of Scott Depot died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at home after a long illness.

She was born in Wayne County, the daughter of Ora and Myrtle Bradley, and grew up in Kenova. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Kay McDermott of Smyrna, Georgia, and an infant daughter, Cheryl Lynn.

She was a longtime resident of Spring Hill and was a member of First Baptist Church, South Charleston. She was a member of the South Charleston Civitan Club and was an avid gardener, bridge player and traveler.

Surviving: husband, William O. Caswell; sons, Larry D. Caswell and his wife, Jane, Mike D. Caswell, Bruce Bradley Caswell and his wife, Cheryl, all of Charleston; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter, Alexandra Caswell.

Service was held Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at People's Baptist Church, Scott Depot, with the Rev. Peter Faulkner officiating. A private family burial followed at Hillcrest Cemetery, Wayne County. Rollins Funeral Home, Kenova, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jacqueline S. McClelland

Jacqueline Stultz McClelland, 50, of Scott Depot died May 9, 2004, at her residence following a courageous battle with cancer.

Jackie was a retired district supervisor with Fashion Bug between 1976 and 2003. She was a member of Cross of Grace Lutheran Church, Hurricane.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence C. Stultz, her sister, Patricia Geho, and her father-in-law, James M. McClelland.

Surviving: daughter, Jessica Eary of Nitro; mother, Mildred Stultz of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania ; sister, Laraine Pruce of Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania ; brother, Larry T. Stultz of Washington , Pennsylvania ; three grandchildren, Haley McClelland, Ryan Eary and Allison Eary; mother-in-law, Mary Roberta McClelland of Scott Depot; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

Service was held Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, Pittsburgh, with Pastor Brian Shirey officiating. Burial was in Jefferson Memorial Park, Pittsburgh. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to Cross of Grace Lutheran Church, PO Box 1025, Hurricane WV 25526; or the American Cancer Society, PO Box 102454, Atlanta GA 30398-2454; or Kanawha Hospice Care Inc., 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Joseph R. Miller

Joseph R. “Pete” Miller, 72, of Akron, Ohio, formerly of Poca, died May 9, 2004 at home after a long battle with cancer.

He was a member of the Hometown Church of God Mission. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Korean War veteran. he was retired from General Motors of Parma, Ohio, with 35 years of dedicated service. He was a member of U.A.W. Local 1005. For many years he was the grounds keeper for Dick and Fran Buchholzer.

Surviving: his wife of 42 years, Sue Casto Miller; daughter, Belinda “Susie” Miller of Akron; sons and daughters-in-law, James of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Kim Miller of Ravenna, Ohio, Joseph and Stephanie, John and Lisa, all of Akron; four grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; brothers, Hubert Miller of Scott Depot and Charles Miller of Tallmadge; sister, Ruby Hughes of Nitro; many nieces and nephews.

Service was held Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Gatens Funeral Home Chapel, Poca, with Pastors Darren Persinger and Jeff Pitchford officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

James W. Erwin

James William Erwin, 73, of Hurricane died May 14, 2004, after a short illness.

Born December 24, 2003 in Hurricane, he was the son of the late Richard and Emmer Mannon Erwin.

Jim was a lifelong resident of Hurricane and was retired from Allied Chemical, Nitro, and held several different jobs during his lifetime, including a being a television repairman. He was a member and deacon of Bethel Baptist Church, Hurricane.

Surviving: his wife of 54 years, Constance Loraine Erwin; children, Gary Lee Erwin and his wife, Denise, Larry Wayne Erwin, Paul Roger Erwin, all of Hurricane, Mary Beth Totten of Nitro, Carolyn Sue Mills and her husband, David, of Lexington, Alabama, David Allen Erwin and his wife, Theresa, of Winfield, Ruth Ann McCormick and her husband, Charles, of Paradise; grandchildren, Sarah, Katie, Holly, Melissa, Jimmy, Erica, Scott, April, Charlie, Justin D., Lauren, Brianna, Erica, Rosie, Justin R., Riley and Tyree.

Service was held Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Mark Kilburn officiating and special speaker, Charles McCormick. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Hurricane.

Phyllis Turley

Phyllis Jackson Turley, 73, of Poca, formerly of St. Albans, died May 11, 2004, at home following a long illness.

Born March 23, 1931 in Huntington, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Euna Rice Jackson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hallie L. Turley, and her sister, Mary Alice Jackson Carter.

She was a 1949 graduate of Dunbar High School, was retired from Florsheim Shoe Co., and was a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 868, St. Albans.

Surviving: daughter, Trina Higginbotham and her husband, Kurt, of Poca; sons, Hal Turley and his wife, Stephanie, of Huntington, David “Duke” Turley and his wife, Dawn, of DeSota, Texas , Mark Turley and his wife, Pam, of St. Albans; brothers, George W. Jackson of Charleston and David Jackson of Dunbar; grandchildren, Jason and his wife, Megan, Holly, Casey, Danielle, Lindsey, Nicholas, Jeremy, Sarah, Hallie, and Joshua.

Service was held Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. John Taylor officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Harry O. Byrnside

Harry O. Byrnside, 83, of Scott Depot died at home on May 13, 2004.

He was born in Missouri on November 22, 1920, to Herbert and Pearl Higley Byrnside, and moved to Charleston as a young child. He lived in Cross Lanes for many years before moving to Scott Depot in 1973.

He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He worked for Quality Press in Charleston for several years and was retired from the U.S. Government. He was a member of the Cross Lanes United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Craig Byrnside.

Surviving: daughter, Judy Cobble and husband, George, of Eleanor; son, Denny and wife, Marilyn, of Cross Lanes; grandchildren, David Byrnside, Amanda Byus, Jason Byrnside and Christina Cobble; sisters, Anabelle Love of St. Albans, Betty Truman of Charleston and Helen Thumm of South Charleston.

Service was held Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home with the Rev. Greg Hayes officiating. Burial with military rites was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.
