CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Margaret Bloom Lyter, 87, of Charles Town, died Friday, March 20, 1998, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.
Born Aug. 14, 1910, in Halltown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Laura Dunn Henretty.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Otho S. Bloom Sr., in 1969; and her second husband, John W. Lyter II, in 1986.
She earned her teaching degree at Shepherd College and taught for 44 years in Jefferson County, W.Va., and Loudoun County, Va. She taught in the Round Hill School for 35 years.
In addition to teaching, she and her first husband owned and operated the former Jefferson Hardware Store, Charles Town.
She was a member of retired teachers of Loudoun County, Va.; served as president of St. Thomas Lutheran Church Woman's Auxiliary, was a Sunday School teacher, worship leader and a member of the church choir.
She was instrumental in forming the local American Cancer Society and mental health programs. She served as president of the former Charles Town General Hospital Auxiliary and was a volunteer with Jefferson Memorial Hospital and Knott Nursing Home.
She was involved with Jefferson County Red Cross, March of Dimes, Potomac Highlands Association, Old Charles Town Library, Old Charles Town Museum, Old Opera House and Millbrook Orchestra.
She was a member of General Federation of Women's Clubs, Charles Town Woman's Club, serving as president for three terms and parliamentarian for 10 years. She also served as president of GFWC West Virginia Eastern District and served as chairman on GFWC West Virginia state projects.
She was instrumental in the first and second restoration of Holl's Pump and the dedication of Holl's Pump during the city's centennial in 1986.
She was the recipient of the 1988 Jefferson County Citizen of the Year award presented by The Journal.
In 1996, she was honored for her years of dedication as chairman of the annual Charles Town Christmas Parade by being named Grand Marshal of the first Charles Town Heritage Days Parade during the 1996 West Virginia Homecoming Celebration.
She is survived by one son, Otho S. Bloom of Charles Town; and two grandchildren, Margaret Louise Bloom and Jeffrey Scott Bloom.
She was preceded in death by one son, Harry S. Bloom, in 1967; one sister, Martha Taylor; and one brother, Guy Henretty.
Services will be Monday, March 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Charles Town. The Rev. Richard E. Neal will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town.
Bertie B. Gardner
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Bertie Butler Gardner, 100, of Shepherdstown, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born June 6, 1897, in Kearneysville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George W. and Bessie Whittington Kave.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry C. Gardner, in 1973.
She was a homemaker.
She was a life member of New Street United Methodist Church, Shepherdstown.
She is survived by three daughters, Margaret G. Moore of Shepherdstown, Katherine V. Cook of Tilgmanton, Md., and Mary G. Grove of Sharpsburg; one brother, Albert Kave of Shepherdstown; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, May Griffith and Annabelle Moore; and six brothers, Franklin Kave, Robert Kave, Oscar Kave, Joseph Kave, George Kave and Johnny Kave.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at New Street United Methodist Church, Shepherdstown. The Rev. Wendy Shullenbarger will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery, Shepherdstown.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church.

Robert F. Caplinger Sr.
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Robert F. "Bob" Caplinger Sr., 52, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.
Born June 26, 1945, in Bergton, Va., he was the son of the Rev. Austin J. Caplinger and the late Nola Halterman Caplinger.
He was a member of The House of the Lord Church.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his stepmother, Geneva Caplinger; his wife, Linda Morris Caplinger; one daughter, Susan Faye Henry of Hedgesville, W.Va.; one son, The Rev. Robert F. Caplinger Jr. of Martinsburg; two stepdaughters, Carol M. Smith and Virginia L. Barrett, both of Martinsburg; one stepson, Vincent J. Cool of Martinsburg; three sisters, Shirley Butts, Arvilla Collins and Bonnie LeHew, all of Martinsburg; two brothers, David Caplinger of Martinsburg and Austin J. Caplinger of Broadway, Va.; one half sister, Ginger Caplinger of Martinsburg; one half brother, John Caplinger of Martinsburg; two stepbrothers, Randy Everhart and Jeff Everhart, both of Martinsburg; four grandchildren; and six stepgrandchildren.
Services will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Robert F. Caplinger Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

James O. Washington
BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - James O. Washington, 70, of Bunker Hill, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.
Born Sept. 17, 1927, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Raymond E. Washington and Ethel Green Banks.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle Mae Dokes Washington.
He was an active member of Senior Citizen's Center of Martinsburg.
He is survived by one son, James E. Washington of Bunker Hill; four daughters, Ethel Mae Smith, Mary Ann Ballard and Barbara Washington, all of Martinsburg, and Kay Devonshire of Bunker Hill; one brother, Raymond E. Washington of Bunker Hill; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three aunts; nieces and nephews; and a close friend, Ernestine Roundsaville of Martinsburg.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Harry L. Washington.
Services will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. James E. Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, with military graveside services conducted by Newton D. Baker Post 896, VFW, and Berkeley Post 14, American Legion.

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - Pauline N. Hesse Webber, 78, of Kearneysville, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.
Born Sept. 1, 1919, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Dola Myers Hesse.
She was employed by Perfection Garment Co. of Martinsburg; and later with London Fog Co. of Boonsboro.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her husband, George W. Webber; two daughters, Juanita F. Burke of Kearneysville and Gail E. Cushwa of Spring Mills, W.Va.; one sister, Dorothy Plumber of Martinsburg; one brother, Ralph Hesse of Martinsburg; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn Stilwell.
Graveside services will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Rosedale cemetery. The Rev. Mitchell L. Miller will officiate.

GERRARDSTOWN, W.Va. - Catherine M. Franks, 78, of Gerrardstown, died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at her home.
Born Feb. 28, 1920, in Frederick County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Ashton and Mazie Dick Unger.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Franks.
She retired from Corning Glass Works.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Inwood, W.Va.
She is survived by two daughters, Delores A. Dunham of Glengary, W.Va., and Geneva M. McFarland of Inwood; three sons, Donald L. Franks of Inwood, Phillip D. Franks of Glengary and Charles W. Franks of Gerrardstown; two sisters, Madeline Thompson of Orlando, Fla., and Nina House of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Thomas A. Unger of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Harold W. Unger of Hedgesville, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two infant sons, Arnold Franks and Larry Franks; two sisters, Margaret Unger and Vera Unger; and three brothers, Paul Unger, James Unger and Walter Holliday.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Inwood. The Rev. Devin B. Ward will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Carmel cemetery, Glengary.

Irma M. Patrick
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Irma Mosell Patrick, 94, of Charles Town, died Friday, March 20, 1998, in Cleveland.
Born Aug. 16, 1903, in Charles Town, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Flora Duffie Snowden.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin L. Patrick, in 1974.
She was a graduate of Storer College in Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and received her master's of education from West Virginia University.
She taught for 44 years and was principal of the former Eagle Avenue School, Charles Town. She was the first black female principal in Jefferson County, W.Va.
She was a member of St. Philips Episcopal Church, Charles Town, and the Women's Auxiliary.
She was a charter member of Modern Maids and Matrons Club, Charles Town.
She is survived by one son, Charles Shannon Hull of Bedford Heights, Ohio; three grandchildren, Stacey Hull, Charles Hull Jr., and Sharon Boiner; six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Bertha Rideoutt, Clara Jackson and Yvonne Callowy; and three brothers, Charles Snowden Jr., Edgar Snowden and Margruder Snowden.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Philips Episcopal Church, 411 S. Lawrence St., Charles Town. The Rev. Edward Greene will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens cemetery.
