He is survived by his wife, Joan Stickles Michael; one daughter, Diane Kee of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three sons, Nelson E. Michael Jr. of Bunker Hill, Scott D. Michael and Randy Michael, both of Martinsburg; one stepdaughter, Ashley Furley of Bunker Hill; two stepsons, James Shiley and Neal Sharp Jr., both of Bunker Hill; one sister, Roberta McKenna of Martinsburg; one brother, Mike Michael of Martinsburg; seven grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery with military graveside honors by Newton D. Baker 896 VFW and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.

Charles Rockwell
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Charles Rockwell, 75, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.
Born April 26, 1922, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ernest C. and Violia Powell Rockwell.
He was a 1940 graduate of Martinsburg High School.
In 1975, after 30 years, he retired as chief of protection and security in the engineering department at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served with the 25th Infantry in Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands and Vela la Vela. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
He was a member of the Men's Bible Class at Otterbein United Methodist Church.
He was a lifetime member of Newton D. Baker Post 896 Veterans of Foreign Wars; Berkeley Post 14 American Legion; and Martinsburg Lodge 120 Loyal Order of Moose.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Palmer Rockwell.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Paul Stanley and the Rev. William Merki will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

Catherine P. Clark Smith
HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Catherine Pauline Clark Smith, 81, of Hedgesville, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at her home.
Born March 25, 1916, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Mervil and Laurabelle Kerns Palmer.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Theodore C. Clark.
She was a seasonal worker at Musselman's for 18 years.
She was a member of Central Chapel Church in Ganotown, W.Va.
She is survived by her husband, Willard E. Smith; two stepchildren by her first marriage, Jessie J. Clark and Hilda Bivens, both of Shanghai, W.Va.; six stepchildren by her second marriage, William Smith, Linda Ambrose, Patricia Butts and David Smith, all of Hedgesville, Hope Smith and Mark Smith, both of Marion, Va.; two sisters, Frances Kursey of Tomahawk, W.Va., and Annabelle McKinney of Martinsburg; 18 step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three stepdaughters, Gloria Jean Smith, Luella R. Smith and J.J. Smith; five stepsons, Jack Clark, Rex Smith, Anthony Smith, Roger Smith and Daniel Smith; two sisters, Vallie McKinney and Charm Kees; and one brother, Lee Palmer.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. Burial will be in Central Chapel cemetery, Ganotown.

Carl D. Monk
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Carl Douglas Monk, 52, of Martinsburg, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at his home.
Born March 22, 1945, in Bluefield, W.Va., he was the son of Amoth Carl and Edith House Monk of Hawthorne, Fla.
He was a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Vetock of Fairfax, Va.; one sister, Rebecca Monk of Hawthorne; two grandchildren; a close friend, Brenda Jackson of Martinsburg; aunts and cousins.
A memorial service will be Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Berkeley Square Apartments Community Room in Martinsburg. The Rev. James W. Palmer will officiate. A memorial service will also be held at the graveside in Hawthorne cemetery, Hawthorne, later this week with the Rev. Gene Maddox officiating.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Baneta Florence Miller Hunter, 80, of Berkeley Springs, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born July 19, 1917, in Point Pleasant, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Achsah Belle McClung Miller.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Morgret Hunter, in 1978. They were married June 20, 1941.
She earned her bachelor's degree in education from Marshall University, Huntington, W.Va.
She and her husband owned and operated Hunter's Hardware, Berkeley Springs. She also was a reading teacher with the Morgan County public schools, retiring in 1978. Earlier, she taught at The Pines Hospital, Berkeley Springs. Most recently, she had been a homemaker.
She was a member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church, Berkeley Springs, where she served as organist and as a Sunday school teacher.
She had served on the board of directors of the Morgan County Public Library. She was active with Girl Scouts and Women's Club of Morgan County.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda K. Hunter and Jean Hunter Dick, both of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Sylvia Dahlstrom of Columbus, Ohio, and Mary Dee Shirk of Lady Lake, Fla.; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Miller.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs, where services will be conducted at 1 p.m. The Rev. Kathy Dawson will officiate. Burial will be private. The funeral home will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday for the convenience of friends.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Ruth C. Stalling, 88, a resident of Canterbury Nursing Home and formerly of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.
Born Sept. 17, 1909, in Jefferson County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Wright and Pearl Dunaway Clendening.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Stalling, in 1976.
She attended Leetown School; and was a 1928 graduate of Kings Daughters Hospital Training School for Nurses.
She was a visiting nurse for Metropolitan Insurance Co. in Hagerstown and in New Jersey.
She was a member of Leetown United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sisters, Frances C. Bradshaw and Pauline C. Kantner, both of Martinsburg; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, A. Elizabeth Clendening; and five brothers, Robert C. Clendening, D. Wright Clendening, J. Leonard Clendening, Edgar Lee Clendening and J. Paul Clendening.
Graveside services will be private.

Paul K. Dunham
INWOOD, W.Va. - Paul K. Dunham, 74, of Route 3, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Jan. 18, 1923, in Glengary, W.Va., he was the son of the late Amos Harwood and Ivy Pearl Mason Dunham.
He was a retired mechanic with 33 years of service with C.H. Musselman Co. and Knouse Foods.
He was a member of Mount Carmel Church, where he was a trustee, Sunday school superintendent and teacher of adult Sunday school classes.
He was a member of JOUAM Council 15.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II as a medic in the European Theater. He received four battle campaign stars; Bronze Arrow Head; Good Conduct Medal; Meritorious Unit Award; and World War II Victory Ribbon.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty L. Saville Dunham; two daughters, Judy D. Benner of Kearneysville, W.Va., and Paula L. Shade of Inwood, W.Va.; five brothers, Ollen Dunham of Jones Spring, W.Va., Bobby Dunham, Max Dunham, Glen Dunham and Eugene Dunham, all of Glengary, W.Va.; and one granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Evelyn Parsons, Azealea Bailey and Lillie Maxine Dunham; and two brothers, Floyd Dunham and Bruce Dunham.
Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Lester Kisner will officiate.
Burial will be in Central Chapel cemetery at Ganotown with military graveside services by Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.
