Ruby Thelma McCallister

Ruby Thelma McCallister, 85, of Barboursville, passed away Monday, February 9, 2004, at St Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, February 13, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Phil Wilson and Rev. Scott Ferguson. Burial in Enon Cemetery. She was born May 19,1918, in Barboursville, a daughter of the late Lambert B. and Nancy Ann Rayburn Bledsoe. She was a member of Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce McCallister; one daughter, Wanda Allen; two sisters, Violet Wagner and Goldie Day, and two brothers, Edgar Bledsoe and Charles Bledsoe. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Wilma Jean and Kenneth Bland of Proctorville, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Debbie McCallister of Lebanon, Ohio; one sister, Emily Smith of Barboursville, and one brother, Lambert Bledsoe Jr. of Ashland, Ky.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. The family would like to thank Hospice of Huntington, Steele Memorial United Methodist Church, Mike McClung, and Jake and Debbie Clark for their kindness during their mother's illness.

Retzel G. Hill Sr.

Retzel G. Hill Sr., 73, of Hurricane died January 30, 2004, at home after a long illness. He was the youngest child of eleven of the late Lorenzo and Cora Hill. He was a truck driver for Danville Lumber Company until his illness in 1981 and a member of Valley View Baptist Church.

Surviving: his wife of 48 years, Bonnie Hill; children and their spouses, Connie and James Nester of Charleston, Diana and Robert Goldsack II of Germantown, Maryland, Retzel G. Hill Jr. of Hurricane, Rebecca and Nick Delaney of Germantown, Priscilla and Rick Milam Jr. of Griffithsville; sister, Lennie Hooser of Hurricane; grandchildren, Virginia, Krystal, Stacey, Kayla and Heather Hill, T.J. Milam, Stephanie and Robert Goldsack III, and Meghan Delaney.

Service was held Monday, February 2, 2004, at Koontz Funeral Home, Hamlin, with the Rev. Roger Ross officiating. Interment was in Adkins-Hill Cemetery, Palermo.

Memorial donations may be made to Mrs. Bonnie Hill, 413 High School Avenue, Hurricane WV 25526.

Mildred L. Goble

Mildred L. Goble, 62, of Scott Depot died January 29, 2004, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. She was preceded in death by her father, Bertis Hazelett. She was retired from the West Virginia Department of Employment Security and was a member of Scott Depot Christ Fellowship. She was a graduate of Winfield High School, where she was valedictorian of the class of 1959 and a member of the Putnam County Quilters Guild.

Surviving: husband, Gary D. Goble; daughter, Cindy Hoye of Mooresville, North Carolina; son, Dewaine Goble of St. Albans; mother, Emma Hazelett of Scott Depot; sister, Phyllis Hazelett of Cleveland, Ohio; brother, Jim Hazelett of Scott depot; grandchildren, Joshua and Lauren Goble and Bethany Hoye.

Service was held Saturday, January 31, 2004, at Scott Depot Christ Fellowship with Dr. Rodney Taylor and Pastor Larry Hammett officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston WV 25311.

Thurmond M. Anderson

Thurmond M. “Butch” Anderson, 55, of Scott Depot died February 2, 2004, at home.

Surviving: his wife of 35 years, Joyce Miller Anderson; sisters, Marcella Atkinson of Georgia and Debbie Fish of Nitro.

Service was held Thursday, February 5, 2004, at Gatens Funeral Home Chapel, Poca, with James McCallister officiating. Burial was in the Anderson Family Cemetery, Dunbar.

Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Alfred V. Knight

Alfred V. “Buddy” Knight, 64, of Winfield died January 28, 2004, due to complications from heart surgery. He was the son of the late John and Nola Knight of St. Albans, formerly of Craigsville, Virginia. He was retired from Columbia Gas Transmission with over 40 years of service. He was a familiar face at Deer Run Golf Course. Since his retirement, he discovered a passion for the game of golf. He especially enjoyed being a ranger, earning him the nickname “Ranger Bud.”

Surviving: daughter, Stephanie Sturm, and grandson, John “JC” Bush, of Winfield; his faithful companion, his collie, Abraham; sister and brother-in-law, Dawn Day and Tom Calabrese of Hurricane; brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Marie Knight of Roanoke, Virginia; niece and her husband, Melissa and Mike Milam, and their daughters, Alexis and Brooklyn.

Service was held Saturday, January 31, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Father Tim Grossi officiating. Burial was in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Scott Depot.

Cameron Seth Patton

Cameron Seth Patton, died January 26, 2004 at WVU Children's Hospital. Cameron was the infant son of Donald and Melissa Patton of Winfield. Also surviving: sister, Kathryn; brother, Donald II; grandparents, Charles and Constance Landers of Winfield, Charles and Darlene Tyler of Hurricane; aunts and uncles, Patrick and Anna Moon of St. Albans, Charlie and Jen Landers of Nitro, John and Joyce Patton of Poca, and Mike Patton of Charleston; cousins, Taylor, Brinklie and Braydon Moon of St. Albans, Michael and Jennifer Patton of Midway; and a host of family and friends.

Service was held Saturday, January 31, 2004, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Jamie Wright officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Memorial donations may be made to the Cameron Patton Fund, c/o Putnam County Bank, 2761 Main Street, Hurricane WV 25526.

George E. King

George E. King, 71, of Poca died January 30, 2004, at home.

He was a retired carpenter of 46 years from the Local No. 1207. He was a member of the Nitro Moose and the American Legion. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving: wife, Ruth Wilkinson King; sons, Dewayne of Poca and Steve and wife, Tammy, King of Red House; daughter, Kathie King of Poca; brother, James J. and wife, Sue, King of Poca; grandchildren, Jonathan and Nathan King of Red House and Josh King of Hometown.

Service was held Monday, February 2, 2004, at Saint Patrick Catholic Church, Bancroft, with Father Bill Petro officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

David Meek Brown

David Meek Brown, 51, of Scott Depot died suddenly January 31, 2004, at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Ithaca, New York, the only son of Walter L. and Gene Meek Brown of Statesboro, Georgia.

He graduated from West Virginia University in 1975 with Bachelor's and Master's of Science degrees. He was a retired senior design specialist for Avaya Communications, formerly C&P Telephone and AT&T. He was currently working as a communication specialist at Marshall University.

He was an Eagle Scout and lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a founding member and was on the board of directors of the West Virginia Trophy Hunters Association, where he was instrumental in the production of the annual West Virginia Hunting and Fishing Show. He loved nature and enjoyed spending time with his camera in the woods.

He was a member of the Friendship Force International and had just begun a term as vice-president of Charleston Chapter. He was a loving and caring husband, father, son and brother.

Also surviving: wife, Sarah Jo Brown; daughters, Sarah Ann and Holly Elizabeth, both at home; sister, C.G. Brown Dillberger and her husband, John, of Creedmore, North Carolina.

Service was held Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. David Jones officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Memorial donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, 2829 Kanawha Blvd. East, Charleston WV 25311.

Thelma C. Forth

Thelma C. Forth, 84, of Hurricane died February 1, 2004, at home with her family by her side.

She was a homemaker and member of Teays Valley Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her son, Doug Forth, parents, Melvin and Annie Bailey Christian, 10 brothers and sisters.

Surviving: husband, Howard D. Forth; daughter, Connie Forth Bird of Hurricane; sister, Opal March of Miami, Florida; brothers, Oran Christian of St. Albans and Don Christian of South Charleston; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Service was held Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. Ken Toler officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Glen A. Miller

Glen A. Miller, 47, of Hurricane died Saturday, January 31, 2004.

He was a Protestant and an inspector for the Department of Highways with 23 years of service. He was a 1974 graduate of Charleston High School and a member of the Nitro Moose Lodge.

Surviving: wife, Cynthia Austin Miller; father, Walter Eugene Miller of Onalaska, Texas ; mother, Joan Marie Adams of Pineville; sisters, Debra Lynn Wiley Payne of Cedar Park, Texas , Karen Sue Miller of Onalaska, and Linda Meadows of Charleston; nephew, Christopher Wiley of Cedar Park; nieces, Courtney Wiley of Cedar Park and Brittany Miller of Onalaska; uncle and aunt, Raymond Miller and Carol Miller of Hurricane; cousins, Lisa and Kaitlyn Miller; stepbrother, William Adams of Apex, North Carolina; stepsister, Belinda Hill of Madison.

Service was held Thursday, February 5, 2004, at Cooke Funeral Home Chapel, Nitro, with the Rev. Glen Kuhn officiating.

Violet Juanita Sayre

Violet Juanita Sayre, 71, of Hometown died February 4, 2004, in Putnam General Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her son, Terry Sayre.

She was retired from Stone & Thomas Distribution Center, Rock Branch, and attended Hometown Church of God Mission.

Surviving: husband, Ray E. Sayre; son, Kevin B. Sayre of Hometown; sister, Judy Archer of Athens, Ohio; brothers, Dany Martin of Given and Edward Martin of Punta Gorda, Florida; grandchildren, Matthew Sayre of Buckhannon, Tara Nichole Sayre of St. Albans and Justin Blaine Sayre of Teays Valley.

Service was held Saturday, February 7, 2004, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastors Jim Boggess and Darren Persinger officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Red House.

Stanley Pennington

Stanley Pennington, 84, of Hurricane died February 6, 2004.

Surviving: wife, Garnette; son, Jeffrey of Hurricane.

There was no service. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

John P. Burgy Jr.

John P. Burgy Jr., 71, of Hurricane, formerly of South Charleston, died February 5, 2004, in CAMC General Hospital after a long illness.

He was born July 1, 1932 in South Charleston, the son of the late John and Francis Eulene Zimmerman Burgy.

He retired from FMC Corporation, South Charleston. He attended Lighthouse Baptist Church, Hurricane.

Surviving: his wife of 42 years, Helen J.; sons, Eric Burgy and wife, Stephanie, of South Charleston, John W. and companion, Barbara Taylor; brother, Richard L. Burgy of South Charleston.

Service was held Monday, February 9, 2004, at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston, with the Rev. Jerry White and the Rev. David Bowen officiating. Entombment was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
