Carmie L. Vance, 74, of Arlington, Texas , died Sunday, Mach 6, 2005, at Medical Center of Arlington. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 10, 2005, at Eastern Gate United Baptist Church, Huntington, WV, by the Rev. Ray Vance. Interment in Ben Hatfield Cemetery, Salt Rock, WV. He was born September 4, 1930, at Salt Rock, WV, a son of Roy and Edith Hatfield Vance. He was a charter member of Eastern Gate United Baptist Church in Huntington. Mr. Vance was a truck driver and had resided in Arlington since 1981. He married Mabel Grimmett on November 15, 1958 in Huntington, WV, and she survives along with daughters, Jill Reuter of Kopperl, Texas , Connie Trogden of Montana and Patty Butler of Kentucky; sons, Marty Vance of Hurst, Texas , and Denny Vance of Nashville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; brothers, Romie Vance of Virginia, the Rev. Ray Vance of West Virginia; and sisters Pauline Adkins of Huntington, WV, Nancy Bredon of Florida and Louise Murphy of West Virginia. Sandra Elaine Rutherford, 41, of Culloden, W.Va., passed away at her residence on Saturday, March 5, 2005. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, March 10, 2005 at the Open Door Baptist Church, Huntington, by the Rev. Jerry Chapman. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton, W.Va. Sandra was an employee of River Park Hospital and a member of the Open Door Baptist Church. She was born on April 20, 1963, in Huntington, W.Va., the daughter of the late Booker and Evelyn Mechanic Keesee. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Keesee, one sister, Marsha Keesee, a nephew, Tommy Keesee and a niece, Evelyn Keesee. She is survived by her husband, Marshall “Marty” Rutherford; three sons, all at home, Brandon Keesee, Tyler and Richard Rutherford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Allen and Diane Keesee of Mobile, Ala., and Stephen Keesee of Franklin, Tenn.; one half sister, Minnie Ann Nelson of Baton Rouge, La.; several nieces and nephews. Mr. Charles Edward Bartram, Jr., 80, of Ona, husband of Margie Ross Bartram, died Saturday, March 12, 2005, in Mariner Health Care. He was a retired mechanic and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Julian E. Carroll, 96, of Huntington, passed away Friday, March 11, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Graveside services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 14, 2005, in White Chapel Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. He was born Aug. 30,1908, in Milton, a son of the late Claude and Hattie Carroll. He was a former owner of Carroll Trucking Company and was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Tackett Carroll. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Reid and Sue Ann Carroll of Barboursville; one brother, Virgil Carroll of Milton; and two grandchildren, Danielle and Megan Carroll. Janet Marie Dillon, 61, of Huntington passed away March 11, 2005, at her residence. Nellie M. Chaney
Nellie M. Chaney, 84, of 181 N. Elkhart Ave., died Sunday (Feb. 27, 2005) in Elkhart General Hospital. She was born May 13, 1920, in Logan County, WVa., to William and Lola Lee Jimison. On July 25, 1936, she married Wilson Chaney in Catlettsburg, Ky. He died in 1969. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy (Robert) Bruscato of Countryside, Ill., and Susan Shepherd of Elkhart; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert F. Jimison of Culloden, W.Va.., and Richard Jimison of Edwardsburg. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda J. Cooper; a son, Barry Lee Chaney; a sister and a brother. The Rev. David Hughes of New Salem United Methodist Church officiated at funeral services. Burial in Prairie Street Cemetery. Mrs. Chaney retired in 1984 from the Cheery Corner at Elkhart General Hospital after 23 years of service. Memorials may be given to .the ALS Foundation or the American diabetes. Association.
Howard E. Williams
Howard E. Williams, 88, of Milton put up a strong fight in life and death, and passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2005, in The Arbors at Gallipolis Nursing home, where the staff especially cared for him like their own, and where they cared for the rest of his family like we were one of their family. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 13, 2005, at Milton Baptist Church with Dr. Thomas J. DuBose officiating. Burial in Milton Cemetery. He was born December 17,1916, in Owensboro, Ky., a son of the late Rev. Walter W. and Ella E. Williams.
He was also preceded in death by one son, David Howard Williams and eight brothers and sisters. Mr. Williams was a graduate of Milton High School and went to Marshall College, where he played football under Coach Cam Henderson. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, where he served in the exclusive Carlson's Marine Raiders, specializing in unconventional strategies and hand-to-hand combat near and behind enemy lines. Because of his valiant service and injuries, he was awarded four Purple Hearts. He had been a member of the Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club; was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; the American Legion; and a life member of the military Order of the Purple Heart. During his life after war, he supported his family as a merchant and salesman. He was a member of Milton Baptist Church and had been a faithful member of Jackson Men's Sunday School Class. He was quite active in the town of Milton and had been a previous Citizen of the Month. Howard was a member of the Milton Senior Center, where he loved to play in the Milton Seniors “Fun Band”. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Brinker Williams; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary K and William Freytag of Asheville, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Vicki Parsons Williams of Ona; two granddaughters Ashlee Williams and Emilee Williams; and one brother, Rev. He was born November 9, 1959 in Marysville, Ohio, a son of Bill and Janet Adkins Scarberry of Barboursville. He was an employee of Heiner's Bakery for more than 25 years. Ruth Jeanette Spradling, 59, of Barboursville, passed away March 9, 2005, at home. Funeral services were conducted at noon Saturday, March 12, 2005 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born May 24, 1945, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late James B. and Mahalia Elizabeth Scott Spradling. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Charles R. Spradling and one sister, Alberta Spradling. She is survived by four sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia Morris, Rose and Russell Johnson, Mary and Kenneth Johnson and Carolyn Kessler; four brothers and one sister-in-law, James B. “John” Spradling Jr., George William and Patty Spradling, Jackie D. Spradling and Edward Spradling, and her beloved cat, Kandi.
Owen K. Marshall
Owen K. Marshall, 54, of Winfield died February 26, 2005, in Putnam General Hospital following a sudden illness. Born July 26, 1950, he was a son of Arla M. Marshall of Nitro and the late Owen S. Marshall. He was a lifelong resident of Kanawha and Putnam counties and was employed in quality control with South Charleston Stamping Plant. He served during the Vietnam Era with the U.S. Navy, and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving in addition to his mother: son, Eric B. Marshall of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; brothers, Thomas S. Marshall of Grove City, Ohio and Ronald G. Marshall of Summersville; one niece and five nephews. Frederick K. Creasey
Frederick K. Creasey, 87, of Winfield died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, in Putnam General Hospital. He was a retired flight instructor from Piedmont Airlines, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was a pastor in West Virginia and North Carolina and was a member of Winfield Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas , as well as a graduate of the School of Pastoral Care and Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran, serving during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia M. Creasey. Surviving: brother, Joe Creasey of Sun City Center, Florida; sister-in-law, Lou Ann Dornsife of Winfield; one niece and one nephew. Service was held Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Winfield Baptist Church with Pastor David Johns, Pastor Don Myers and Pastor E. Ted Walls officiating. Sherman C. Bennett Jr.
Sherman Cecil Bennett Jr., 80, of Scott Depot died March 2, 2005, in Putnam General Hospital. Born July 14, 1924 in Norton, Randolph County, he was a son of the late Sherman Cecil Sr. and Marie Fallon Bennett. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, William, Wallace and Winfred Bennett, his grandson, Brian McNeal, and his great-grandson, Ethan Wiersma. He was retired from Appalachian Life Insurance Company and attended King's River Worship Center, St. Albans. He served during World War II with the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 656, Nitro, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9097, Teays Valley. Surviving: wife, Helene Bennett; children, Sherman C. Bennett III, Richard A. Bennett and his wife, Karen, Lloyd Eugene Bennett and his wife, Janis, Tonya Lovejoy and her husband, Eddie, Patricia Neeley and her husband, Jack, and Steve Dent, all of Hurricane, and Brenda Davis and her husband Clarence, of Winfield; sister, Dolores “Dee” Handley of St. Albans; brother, Willard “Curly” Bennett of Las Vegas; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Dexter Yocum Jr.
Dexter “Tab” Yocum Jr., 80, of Scott Depot died March 1, 2005, at his home.
Born February 22, 1925 in Kayford, he was the son of the late Dexter Sr. and Eunice Yocum. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Florence Sevy Yocum.
He was a retired operator from Bethlehem Steel and was a member of St. John United Methodist Church, Scott Depot, and Alexander Memorial Presbyterian Church, Stony Bottom. He was a 50-year member of Boone Masonic Lodge 162, White sville, Scottish Rite Bodies, Charleston, and VFW Post 4595. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, having seen five combats and earning five battle stars. He also participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He and his late wife loved their camp in Stony Bottom.
Surviving: daughter, Donna Burchett and husband Jim, of Houston, Texas ; granddaughters, Lisa DeCoster of Katy, Texas and Candace Rosu of Montclair, New Jersey; great-grandchildren, Abbey, Andre and Jacob; his faithful companion, Cindy.
Service was held Saturday, March 5, 2005, at St. John United Methodist Church with Dr. Martin H. Hallett officiating. Burial with military honors and Masonic rites was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn Ann Barnett, 56, of Culloden, W.Va., fought her final battle with pain, leaving this world on March 2, 2005. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She was a faithful member of Grace Wesleyan Church of Culloden, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and treasurer. She worked for many years at H&R Block in St. Albans, W.Va. She will be sadly missed by all her family and friends. She is survived by parents, Lawrence and Alma Clay of Culloden, W.Va.; her husband, Otho “Art” Barnett; sons, James “Jimmy” with wife Jill of Hurricane, W.Va., Eric with wife Tonya of Dover, Del; grandsons, Hunter and Zachary; sisters, Linda Runion with husband Dan of Culloden W.Va., Pamela Clay Egnor with husband John of Wayne, W.Va.; brother Greg Clay with wife Marilyn of Warner Robbins, Ga.; brother-in-law, Mike Barnett with wife Marcella of Lima, Ohio; sister-in-law, Brenda Peal with husband Jennings of Homosassa, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. Arreva Overly Ross, 75, of Huntington, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, March 2, 2005. Funeral services were conducted at noon Saturday, March 5, 2005, at Green Valley Baptist Church by the Rev. Sherwood Thompson. Burial in Green Valley Cemetery. She was born May 23,1929 in Wayne, W.Va., a daughter of the late Luther and Violet Ferguson Parsons. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, William Overly, her second husband, James Ross, one brother, Willis Parsons, and one sister, Louella Brinegar. She was a member of Bethlehem United Baptist Church and she attended Gethsemane United Baptist Church. She is survived by three daughters, Sheila Rowe of South Point, Ohio, Terri Browning of Proctorville, Ohio, and Billie Wolford of Ona; one son Robert William Vance; four brothers, Robert, Willard, Karry and Homer Parsons, all of Lincoln County, West Virginia; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Zollie “Dave” Lawhon, Jr.
Zollie “Dave” Lawhon, Jr., 78, of Glenwood, WV, went to be with the Lord peacefully at home on March 3, 2005. Dave was born May 5, 1926 in Cabell County, a son of the late Zollie and Susie Stevenson Lawhon. He was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Army and US. Air Force. Dave retired from the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local #521 in 1988. He leaves behind his wife of 37 years, Judy Thompson Lawhon, who he loved dearly with all his heart. Also seven daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Bob Spillman of Cocoa, Fla, Sydney and Lyle Bellomy of Lesage, Carolyn and Bud Thompson of Ona, Marilyn and Dennis Cupit of Georgia, Terri Lawhon of Daytona Beach, Fla., Lora and Brian Cremeans of Milton and Melissa Lawhon of Glenwood. Also his two sons and a daughter-in-law, Joe and Jennifer Lawhon of Glenwood and David Lawhon and his fiance, Jolene Stephens of Rush, Ky. One sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Don Ivers of Columbus, Ohio; special mother-in-law, Maudie Thompson and special friend Jean McGuffin. Dave also left behind his 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His life revolved around all his family and friends. He will be sadly and greatly missed by everyone who knew him. Dave was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. Never to be forgot and will always be remembered in so many different ways. We were and are blessed to know such a wonderful man, our husband, daddy and friend.

Thelma Kathleen Holley Sullivan, 77, of Ona died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at her residence. She was born Sept 9, 1927, in Huntington, a daughter of the late Otis Kenton and Anna Mae Turner Holley. She was a homemaker and devoted wife, mother, and friend with a gentle spirit, soft blue eyes and a sweet, sweet smile. She was a member of Barboursville Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Murrell Sullivan; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna Jean and Cihota of Huntington; one son and daughter-in-law, David Murrell and Anna Sullivan of Barboursville; four grandchildren, Rebecca Elizabeth and Jennifer Dawn Cihota of Huntington and Russell Murrell and Kathleen Marie Sullivan of Barboursville; and her aunt, Macil Massie of Milton. She was preceded in death by one sister, Norma Lee Holley and one brother, Robert Kenton Holley. Doris Jean Payton Stowasser, 69, of Hurricane, wife of William “Bill” Stowasser, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was born May 19, 1935, a daughter of the late Harrison and America Thompson Payton. She was a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church. She is survived by one son, Bill Cart; one daughter, Alice Cart; one stepson, Greg Stowasser; one stepdaughter, Pamela Stowasser; one sister, Dearlene Moore; and eight grandchildren, Wayne Hatfield, Walter Hatfield, Michelle Hysell, Renee Hysell, Kevin Cart, Kimberly Cart, Kristy Black and Kenneth Cart. Dorothy Louise Bowen, 80, of Barboursville, passed away Saturday, February 26,2005, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at River Cities Community Church, Huntington, W.Va., by the Rev. Larry Greene. Interment in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Huntington, W.Va. She was born May 31, 1924, a daughter of the Ray Ernest Toney and Glady Pemberton. She was a retired aide from Barboursville State Hospital. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clive Bowen; a son, David Bowen; two sisters, Virginia Maynard and Viola Miller; and a special great-grandson, Ben Bowen, whom she dearly loved. She prayed so much for him to win his battle with cancer, and she wanted to take care of him and now she is. They went to their everlasting, home together. His Nana is holding him in her arms. She is survived by two daughters, Susan Lewis of Huntington and Karen Wilburn of Barboursville; one son, Robert Bowen of Barboursville; and one brother, William Toney of Barboursville.
