Maxine Anderson Roberts, 84, of Winfield died Saturday, January 3, 2004, in Putnam General Hospital.
She was a retired secretary for John G. Anderson, attorney-at-law, and was a clerk for the Selective Service, Winfield. She was a member of Winfield Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Roberts, daughter, Billie Jean Thomas, sister, Helen Mitchell, and brothers, John and Jay W. “Bud” Anderson.
Surviving: daughter and sons-in-law, Terri and Adam Valleau of Baltimore, Maryland, Tom Thomas of Lexington, Ohio; brothers, William Anderson of Winfield, Gene Anderson of Hurricane, and Dr. Robert Anderson of Reck Ledge, Florida; grandchildren, Natalie and Maureen Thomas and Chris Valleau.
Service was held Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at Chapman-Erskine Funeral Home, Winfield, with Dr. Max V. Perrow officiating. Burial was in Winfield Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to a charity of one's choice.
Donna Sue Legg Meadows
Donna Sue Legg Meadows, 54 of Milton, W.Va., passed away Thursday, January 1, 2004 at Cabell-Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 4, 2004 at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by Pastor Kim Stone. Burial in Neal Cemetery. She was born July 30, 1949, in Huntington a daughter of the late Albert “Red” and Myrtle Neal Legg. She was the former manager of One Stop of Milton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Franklin Meadows; one grandchild, Miranda Meadows; one brother, Albert ,”Buddy” Legg; and one sister, Helen Legg Simmons. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Anthony Jividen of Barboursville, Kelly and Danny Vannatter of Ona, and Shelly and Todd Hatfield of Milton; one brother, James “Jimmy” Legg of Huntington; six grandchildren, Stefani and Caleb Hatfield, Danny and Destanee Vannatter and Cody and Zachary Jividen; several nieces and nephews, and a very special friend, Mary Jordan.
Betty Jean Womack
Betty Jean Womack, 80, of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away December 30, 2003, at St. Mary's Medical Center after a brief illness. Betty was born October 6, 1923, in Olive Hill, Ky., the daughter of the late John and Grace Newman Offill. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Leo Womack; one son, Corky Ball; five sisters, Florence Stamper, Dorothy Adams, Madge Reid, Olive Offill, and Hazel Offill; three brothers, Gus Offill, Everett Offill, and James Offill. She previously worked for Sylvania in Huntington, W.Va., and Cormans Dress Shop in Ashland, Ky. Betty loved working in her flower gardens, watching and feeding wildlife, loved to fish, loved playing and listening to music, and was known by all for her fantastic cooking, which she loved doing more than anything. She is survived by two daughters, Becky Coffman and husband Scotty Coffman of Hurricane, W.Va., Libby Ball of Huntington, W.Va.; one son, Ricky Ball and wife Darlene Ball of Cross Lanes, W.Va.; one daughter-in-law Kathryn Ball of Hurricane, W.Va.; one stepdaughter, Vickie Woodrum and husband Bob Woodrum of Crooksville, Ohio; a special friend Jane Hastings; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews. cousins and friends she loved very much. The family would like to thank Hospice of Huntington and the wonderful support of staff from Pro Nursing, Teresa Adkins, Charlotte Baumgardner, Carol Heffner, and Mary Faulkner. Leo Womack
Leo Womack, 88, of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away December 28,2003, at home after a brief illness. He was born September 6, 1915, in Putnam County, West Virginia, a son of the late William and Fannie Angle Womack. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Pansy Zeigler; three brothers Woodrow Womack, Ray Campbell and Ben Campbell and one step son Corky Ball. He was the former owner of Tri-State Pump and Supply in Catlettsburg, Ky., for more than 30 years and retired at age 82. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II where he was awarded the Purple Heart. Leo loved raising a vegetable garden in which he spent most of his time. He also loved to fish and he loved playing and listening to music. He is survived by his wife of 39 years Betty Jean Womack - who died two days later; one daughter, Vickie Woodrum and husband Bob Woodrum of Crooksville, Ohio; two stepdaughters, Becky Coffman and husband Scotty Coffman of Hurricane, W.Va., and Libby Ball of Huntington, W.Va.; one stepson, Ricky Ball and wife Darlene Ball of Cross Lanes W.Va.; one step daughter-in-law, Kathryn Ball of Hurricane, W.Va.; one sister, Madge Graham of Hurricane; a special friend Jane Hastings; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends he loved very much. Alberta Cummings
Alberta Cummings, 107, of Barboursville, passed away Monday, December 29, 2003, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 2, 2004, at Steele Memorial United
Methodist Church by Dr. Ed Grant and Rev. Ralph Sager. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born September 10, 1896, in Lincoln County, a daughter of the late Steven Elmer and Ida Clementine Thornton Heck. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Cummings, a son, James Elmer Cummings, a sister, Susan Heck Sturm, two brothers, Ralph and John Heck and a nephew, Lawrence Heck. During her early years she attended several elementary schools in Lincoln County, but completed grade school at Barboursville Elementary School. Following the eighth grade she entered Morris Harvey High School to complete high school and then to begin her college studies. She transferred to Marshall College, receiving a two year teaching certificate. In 1932, Mrs. Cummings received a Bachelor's degree from Marshall, completing her Master's degree at Ohio University in 1939. Mrs. Cummings began teaching in 1915, teaching 47 years in the Barboursville and county schools. She retired from teaching in 1962 as Home Economics teacher at Barboursville Junior High School. She was a member of Steele Memorial United Methodist Church in Barboursville, a member of the Mary Circle, and a member of the WV State Methodist Women. Mrs. Cummings was a prominent 4-H leader in county and state programs for 35 years, receiving several awards for her work and was active in the Women's Club.
She was a member of the West Virginia Retired Teachers and attended the Barboursville Senior Citizens Center. Mrs. Cummings was an avid seamstress and quilter, has enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking, canning and pickling. She is survived by a grandson, James Frederick Cummings and his wife, Linda of Huntington; a granddaughter, Ruth Ann Koch and her husband Neal of Lavalette; a great-grandson, Jeff Cummings and his wife Michelle; and great-granddaughters, Lisa C. Myers and her husband Steve, Beth Koch, Jayne Koch, and Laura Koch Taylor and her husband, Jim; five great-great-grandchildren and two nephews, Steve and Leonard Strum. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Steele Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund. The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to her dedicated caregivers, Ann, Diana, Loreda, and Sue for their kind and loving care.
Richard Melvin “Dick” Baumgardner
Richard Melvin Dick Baumgardner, 76, departed this world on the wings of angels to meet his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday December 28, 2003, from his home in Huntington, West Virginia. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home in Barboursville by Pastor C.J. Adkins and the Rev. Randy Spurgeon. Burial in Oaklawn Memorial Park. He was born September 2, 1927, in Barboursville, W.Va., a son of the late Albert and Nisha Howell Baumgardner. He was also preceded in by two brothers, Charles Frederick “Bricky” and Edmond Lowell; three sisters, Velma Mae Baumgardner, Lucille Bostic Crowe and Lillian Baumgardner; as well as one niece, Donna Jean Bostic Keffer. He grew up in Barboursville, graduating from Barboursville High School. He was a veteran of the
Korean War, serving in the 628 Tank Battalion in the US Army. As a young man he worked on the C&O Railroad for nine years before completing barber college in Columbus, Ohio. He was a barber for more than 50 years as the owner and operator of Fairfield Barber Shop for most of those years. He was a member of Westmoreland Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher for 10 years. He was also a member of VFW Post 1064, the American Legion Post 93 and a life-time member of the Disabled American Veterans. He is survived by wife, Patricia Ann Jenkins Baumgardner; and three daughters, Crystal Dunkle Cunningham and her husband Bruce, Karen Brooks and her husband Carl and Cindy Smallridge and her fiance Tim Robinson.
Additional survivors are one sister-in-law, Julia Wilson Baumgardner; seven grandchildren, Michael Mallory, Jacob and Caleb Dunkle, Amanda and Matthew Brooks, James Smallridge and Eric Robinson; three nephews and three nieces, Charles David, Dwain Edmond “Eddie” and Gregory Allen Baumgardner; Cheryl Diana Hall, Candace Freeman and Robin Berri Hager, plus a host of great-nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Charles David Baumgardner, Robert Dunkle, Carl Brooks Jr., James Smallridge, Bruce Cunningham and Tim Robinson. Honorary pallbearers were Charles and Jack Leist and Michael Mallory. He was loved and will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Nancy Virginia Harless
Mrs. Nancy Virginia Harless, 87, widow of Cephis W. Harless, died Sunday, December 28, 2003, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at Henson Mortuary, by the Rev. Sue Jarrett. Entombment in Ridgelawn Abbey of Devotion. She was born August 24, 1916, in Huntington, WV, a daughter of the late Thomas A. Thomas and Garnet Louise Marks Harless. She retired from H&R Block and was involved with CONTACT of Huntington. She was a member of Pea Ridge United Methodist Church. She had been active in her church, especially the Wednesday (Dorcus) quilters. Her greatest love was her children and being a homemaker. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Donald and Betty Harless of Cincinnati, Ohio, Nancy Wells of Huntington, Brenda and Jim Wamsley of Huntington, Fred Harless of Huntington; eight grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews; sister, Edith Seward of Conneautville, Pa.; and brothers, Jack Thomas of Huntington and Bill Thomas of Tarboro, N.C. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Harless was preceded in death by a brother, James M. Thomas, and son-in-law, the Rev. Travis E. Wells. Pallbearers were Travis Wells III, Tim Wells, Jim Wamsley, Jerry Beckett, Alan Meek and William Durstein.
Ronald D. “Buddy” Poynter
Ronald D. “Buddy” Poynter, 75, of Barboursville, passed away Sunday, December 28, 2003, at Morris Memorial Nursing Home. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor Kenny Estep. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born February 25, 1928, in Huntington, a son of the late Lonnie and Luvenia Cremeans Poynter. He was retired from INCO and was a member and deacon of Highlawn Baptist Church. He was a US Army veteran serving in the Korean Conflict, a member of Minerva Lodge #13 AF&AM, Barboursville, Huntington Scottish Rite Bodies and a member of VFW #1064, Huntington. He was preceded in death by one brother, Roland “Hody” Poynter. He is survived by his wife, Betty McComas Poynter; one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Roger Harper of Barboursville; one son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Becky Poynter of Ona; three sisters, Dessie Nichols and Marilyn Edmonds, both of Huntington and Gayle Chapman of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Bill Poynter of Proctorville, Ohio; three grandchildren, Stephanie Keefer, Jared Harper and Logan Poynter; and two great grandsons, Caelan and Ryan Keefer. The family would like to thank the South Wing Staff of Morris Memorial Nursing Home for their loving and excellent care during Ron's illness. Lucille Ball McClure, 92, of Milton passed away Thursday December 25, 2003, in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was born April 17, 1911, in Milton, a daughter of the late Lucian and Virginia Sweet Ball. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ray McClure; and siblings, Lucian Ball Jr., Dorothy Ball and Gladys Stewart. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Mary McClure; grandchildren, Alissa and Seth; and sisters, Faye Smith and Lillian Peck. A private graveside service was conducted in Milton Cemetery. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.
Jack Merwin Waldeck
Mr. Jack Merwin Waldeck, 77, of Huntington died Monday, December 22, 2003, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, December 28, 2003, at Henson Mortuary with the Rev. Sue Jarrett officiating. He was a retired Salesman. He was born in Huntington, a son of the late Jack and Ivy Hodges Waldeck. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Doss Waldeck. Mr. Waldeck was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II; was a member of Pea Ridge United Methodist Church, Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, the Audubon Society and the Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society. He is survived by a brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Doss, Ruth Hanley of Merritt Island, Fla., and Emma Margaret Choquette of Adams, Mass.; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Suzanne Jones.
Fletcher I. Walls
Fletcher I. Walls, 66 of Johnson City, Tenn., formerly of Barboursville, W.Va., passed. away on Tuesday, December 23, 2003, in Johnson City, Tenn. He was born October 14, 1937, in Earling, W.Va., to Helen Walls of Johnson City, Tenn., and the late Ralph Walls. Mr. Walls graduated from Huntington East High School and attended Marshall University. He was employed as general sales manager for Eagle International Carbide, Statesville, N.C. He is survived by his wife, Sandra J. Walls; his mother, Helen Walls; daughter Julia Walters and her husband Ben of Asheville, N.C.; son, Robert Walls and his wife Letha of Upland, Calif.; son Edward Walls and his wife Belinda of Gray, Tenn.; son Anthony Walls of Kingsport, Tenn.; he had three grandchildren, Zachary Walters, Carson Walls and Marinda Walls; two sisters, Nancy Hunyadi and her husband Matt; a niece, Erzsebet Hunyadi; and Kara Bluntach of Yorba Linda, Calif.; he is also survived by his brother-in-law, Don Ballengee, wife Krystal, and two nephews, Scott and Troy Ballengee. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, December 28, 2003, at Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville. His uncle, Jake Clark, performed services. Pallbearers were Jeff Clark, Brian Clark, Dickie Hinchman, Kevin Hinchman, Sid Hinchman, and Jim Cunningham. Honorary pallbearers were Don Ballengee, Charles Hensley, Frank Walls, Charles Walls, and Dennis Walls, and Keith Hoffnagle. Theresa G. Larkins Napoleon, 87, of Scott Depot, formerly of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, died Friday, December 19, 2003, at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law.
She was a homemaker and attended Ascension Catholic Church, Hurricane. She loved to garden.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank J. Napoleon.
Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, Leonard and Joan Larkins of Scott Depot; daughter, Shirley Podpora of Davisburg, Michigan; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at Divine Child Catholic Church, Dearborn Heights. Burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, Michigan. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.
Stella Milhorn Withrow
Stella Milhorn Withrow, 87, of Black Betsy died Friday, December 19, 2003, at Patty's House of Care, Hometown, following a long illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Eleanor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Withrow, her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Charlie Stone of Logan, 10 brothers and sisters, one stepdaughter, Grace Lewis, and a stepson, Chester Withrow.
Surviving: stepson and caregiver, Fred Milhorn and his wife, Willie of Eleanor; stepsons, Johnny Mac Milhorn of Bancroft and Eddie Withrow of Poca; stepdaughters, Marie Shamblin of Raymond City and Geraldine Breeden of Florida; several step-grandchildren; special niece, Doris “Bill” Brown of Midway, several other nieces and nephews.
Service was held Monday, December 22, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor David Panaro Jr. officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Mausoleum, Red House.
Pauline D. Coffman
Pauline D. Coffman, 82, of Winfield died December 19, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital.
She was a homemaker and bookkeeper, and a member of Winfield Church of the Nazarene and the Putnam County Homemakers Club. She was a published poet, a gardener, and an excellent craftsman. She was valedictorian of her high school class from Nuttall High School, and a 40-year resident of Putnam County.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Ira And Mary Zealie Davis, sisters, Irene Wood and Imogene Davis, and brother, Eugene Davis.
Surviving: husband, William C. Coffman; daughter and son-in-law, Geneva Lynne and Wayne Iverson; son and daughter-in-law, William C. and Terri Coffman; sisters, Helen Davis and Mabel Bennett of Rainelle, and Katherine Bennett of Cincinnati; grandchildren, Kristin Kerlin of South Carolina and Teri Davis of Culloden; great-grandchildren, Trenton Davis and Gavin Davis.
Service was held Monday, December 22, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. John Hayes officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Hustion Foster
Hustion Foster, 86, of Teays Valley Road, Hurricane, died December 18, 2003.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Vinton and Ethel Burdett Foster, sisters, Ocie Marie Harper and Mabel Slater, and brothers, Lovell and William C. Foster.
He grew up on Four Mile, Coopers Creek, Kanawha County, working on the farm until his parents moved to Cross Lanes. In the 1930s, he worked for United Fuel Gas, Standard Brick Company and Fletcher Enamel. From 1942 to 1947 he worked from Dunbar Flint Glass and from 1947 to 1964 fro Gravely Tractor, Dunbar. He also worked for Dunbar Printing and Shaw Manufacturing, Nitro. He retired in 1982 from Kanawha County schools as head custodian at Dunbar High School and Ben Franklin Vocation School with 12 years' service.
Surviving: his wife of 61 years, Erma Ruth Foster; daughter, Darlene D. Foster at home; son and his wife, Dale A. and Sharon A. Ranson Foster of Cross Lanes; grandson, Jeremy Foster at Marshall University and his fiancee, Alex Govea; sisters, Virginia Boyd, Bessie Cavender and Roxie Elizabeth Lacy, all of Cross Lanes; brothers, Ohmera “Red” Foster of Palm Bay, Florida; many nephews and nieces.
Service was held Sunday, December 21, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Delbert Hawley and the Rev. Billy Lanham officiating. Burial was in Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty.
Cecil C. Honaker Jr.
Cecil C. Honaker Jr., 67, of Red House died December 18, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital.
He was a former mechanic for R.H. Peters Chevrolet and Honaker's Garage. He was a member of Hometown Senior Citizens and the Lions Club and was a Christian.
Surviving: children, Stephanie Stubblefield and Chris Honaker; special nephew, Gary Beller and wife, Carolyn, of Red House; sister-in-law, Annetta Honaker of Eleanor; nieces, Debbie Ross of Teays Valley and Teresa Honaker of Eleanor.
Service was held Monday, December 22, 2003, at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Willard Beller officiating. Entombment followed in the mausoleum. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Adron “Dudder” McClanahan, 79, of Poca died December 21, 2003, at home.
He was a retired coal miner.

Service was held Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Cletus Price officiating. Burial was in Goff-McClanahan Cemetery, Charleston.
