Barbara J. Waugh, 58, of Ona, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 7, 2004, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 9, 2004, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Pastor Paul Meadows officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. She was born December 5, 1945, in Huntington a daughter of the late Charles R. and Mary E. White Lewis. She attended Beulah Ann Missionary Baptist Church, Ona. She is survived by her husband, Allen R. Waugh; daughter, Missy Black of Ona; three grandchildren, Kaitlin, Ryan and Kyle; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Patty and Toby Ray and Connie and Lloyd Morrison all of Ona.
Milton “Buck” Wells
Milton “Buck” Wells, 86, of Huntington went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 7, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 9, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. Jesse Lacy. Burial in Bowen Cemetery. He was born December 17, 1917, in Cabell County, a son of the late Standard Edward and Nannie Roach Wells. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was a 36-year employee of Connors Steel and was a lifelong farmer. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Shirley Wells; one daughter, Bernita McCallister and her husband Gary of Barboursville; one son, Frank Wells and his wife Debbie of Huntington; two brothers, Edward and Dorsel Wells; four sisters, Florene Arthur, Alice Loop, Vestie Hassig, and Erie Coffey; and a brother-in-law, Charles Shirley. He leaves behind a host of good friends including Mark and Jacob Sacre, Wetzel and Randy Lester, and one special buddy, Roger Wooten. Wallace Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Blaine Johnson
Blaine Johnson, 65, of Bethel, Ohio, formerly of Milton died Jan. 5, 2004. He was born June 14, 1938, son of the late Roy and Hester McCroskey Johnson. He was preceded in death by a grandaughter, Cassie Ann Booth; one sister, Gloria Porter; five brothers, Roy Jr., Billy, Chad, Rickey and his twin Wayne. He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine; two daughters, Teresa Booth, Debbie Robbins, and Bill; three sons, Anthony and Kim, David and Connie, and Kevin; 11 grandchildren, Dawn, Erica, Josh, Brittany, Rachel, Samantha, Amy, Lacey, Marcy, Angela, and Courtney; two great-grandchildren, Sadie and Devon; six sisters, Arbra Beckelheimer, Wanda McCoy, Rada Keaton, Patty Dillon, Marcia Johnston and Paula Bledsoe, all of Milton. He was a retired teamster as well as a former vice president of Teamsters Local 100, and a member of the Scottish Rite and a Masonic Lodge 678 in Mason, Ohio. Funeral Services were conducted Friday, January 9, 2004 at E.C. Nurre Funeral Home, Amelia, Ohio. Graveside services were conducted at the Ball's Gap Cemetery, Milton, WV.
Bertha Gue
Bertha Gue, 98, of Barboursville, W.Va., went to sleep in Jesus on Monday, January 5, 2004, after a short illness. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 8, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. David Cardwell and Rev. James Gilkerson. Burial in Green Valley Cemetery. She was born April 21, 1905, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Rev. Clark and Dora Cremeans. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lace Gue; two sons, Hobert and Curnis Gue; and three sisters, Gladys Jenkins, Birdie Childers, and Verla Walker. Survivors include one daughter, Sheila Gue with whom she made her home; one son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Delores Gue of Salt Rock; a daughter-in-law, Marie Gue of Barboursville; three sisters, Lusta Ross, Janice Jobe, and Ova Napier, all of Salt Rock; one brother, Linville Cremeans of South Point, Ohio; six grandchildren, Ronald “Corkie” Gue and his wife Angela of South Point, Mark Gue of Convington, Ga., Alice “Kay” Ferguson and her husband Hughie, Donna Stevens and her husband Clyde, all of Salt Rock; Marcia Warden and her husband Stephen of Huntington and Julia Hodgson and her husband John of Worcester, Mass.; 15 great-grandchildren, Angie Fletcher, Devona Adkins, Cindy Stevens, and Stephen Stevens, all of Salt Rock, Jessica and Jennifer Gue of Covington, Ga., Tonja Moore and Michael Warden of Huntington, USN 2nd Class Petty Officer Scott Warden of Bremerton, Wash., April Gue of Kenova, Michael Gue of Charlottesville, Va., Nicholas Gue of West Hamlin, Sunnie Coovert of Worcester, Mass., Sarah Gue and Kim Jones of South Point, and Michelle Norman of Beckley, W.Va.; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
She was a member of Green Valley United Baptist Church. She gave her life to God at age 14 and had many stories to tell about going to church and singing the gospel. She was an inspiration to all. In her last few days, she was comforted with tender loving care by her great-granddaughter, Cindy Stevens and granddaughters, Alice “Kay” Ferguson and Marcia Warden. Bertha was loved so dearly by many throughout her life and will be sadly missed but never forgotten.
Dr. Charles Withers
Dr. Charles Withers, 86, died Monday, January 6, 2004 at The Inn at Wyngate. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 8, 2004 at Henson Mortuary by the Rev. Jim McGehee. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. He was born June 17, 1917, in Hogsett, W.Va., son of the late Charles Herford and Emma Norton Withers. He was a retired family dentist in Barboursville. Dr. Withers graduated from Man High School, Marshall University and University of Louisville School of Dentistry. He was involved with Barboursville Lions Club for 55 years, the Masonic Lodge for 48 years, was a lifetime member of the American Dental Association. He was an Army veteran, having served in World War II and Korea. Dr. Withers was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Withers in 2002, a sister, Mariane Withers Vaughan and his brother, Melville Withers. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Jerry Hurley of Milton; grandchildren, Emma Elise Hurley and Patrick Hurley. Pallbearers were Orman Hall, Roger Hesson, Randall Barnes, Bob Maxwell, Charles Henson, and Dick Hale.
Mabel Whitman
Mabel Whitman, 95, of Culloden, died Monday, January 6, 2004 in Teays Valley Center, Hurricane. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 8, 2004 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton; burial in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.
Helen M. Tucker
Helen Marie Garrison Tucker, 88, of Buffalo died December 24, 2003, in SunBridge Nursing Home, Teays Valley, following a brief illness.
She was born August 14, 1915 in Bee, Putnam County, daughter of the late William Thomas and Flora Alice Martin Garrison. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Leo, Carl, Clell, Oda and Austin Garrison, grandson, Michael Laurence Sheridan, infant great-grandson, Errett, and infant great-granddaughter, Errett.
She was a homemaker and a member of Walker Chapel Church, Robertsburg.
Surviving: her husband of 64 years, Everett F. Tucker; son and his wife, Kenneth and Susie Tucker of Buffalo; daughters and their husbands, Phyllis and Ed Legg of Buffalo, Doris and Larry Sheridan of Sautee, Georgia; brother and his wife, Ralph and Dorthy Garrison of Rednor, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; many relatives, friends and neighbors.
Service was held Sunday, December 28, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Denver Tucker and the Rev. Jay Parkins officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park.
Loyd H. Gregory
Loyd H. Gregory, 80, of Scott Depot, formerly of Bluefield, died December 23, 2003, at home.
Born in 1923 in Thacker, he was the son of the late Payton and Margaret Gregory. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virginia L. Gregory.
He was a 1941 graduate of Iaeger High School, a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Bluefield, a 50 plus year member of Harmon Masonic Lodge 222 AF&AM, Bluefield, and the Scottish Rite Bodies, Charleston, a 30 plus year member of Beni Kedem Shrine Temple, Charleston, and a veteran of the United State Navy, serving during World War II. He was a loving father who raised his three children alone.
He was in sales for over 40 years, retiring from Certified Brokerage, Huntington. He was a longtime employee of Beechnut Baby Food Company.
Surviving: sons, Winston Gregory and wife, Patty, and Howard Gregory and Carolyn Tierney, all of Scott depot; daughter, Donna Thumm and husband, Chuck, of Lafayette, Virginia; stepdaughter, Nola Gillenwater and husband, Lloyd, of Dunbar; grandchildren, Heather Erskine and Angie Thumm of Lafayette, Whitney Gregory of Scott Depot, and Joe Gillenwater of Cross Lanes; great-grandchild, Jasmine Linkous of Lafayette.
Memorial service and entombment was held Friday, December 26, 2003, at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, West Virginia Memorial Chapel, Cross Lanes. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Nellie Virginia Fugate
Nellie Virginia Fugate, 85, of St. Albans died December 22, 2003, at Select Specialty Hospital, Charleston.
Born September 3, 1918 in Winfield, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Etta Mae Larabee Wymer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Raymond Fugate; her sister, Ada White d, and her brothers, Ausley and Lewis Wymer.
She was a retired clerk with Safeway Grocery Stores in Virginia, was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, St. Albans, and did volunteer work with both the Union Mission and Thomas Memorial Hospital.
Surviving: daughters, Wanda Fay Fugate of St. Albans, Phyllis Jean Burns and her husband, Gary of Ravenswood, Nancy Carroll Hatfield and her husband, Jim, of Charlotte, North Carolina; son, Jimmy Jarrell Fugate and his wife, Rae Ann of LaPonte, Wisconsin; sister, Thelma Trout of Coolville, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, December 27, 2003, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. Robert S. Leadman officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Ronald L. Payne
Ronald L. Payne of Vienna, Virginia, formerly of Midway, Putnam County, died at home on Thursday, December 25, 2003, following a short illness.
He was employed as a plumbing engineer in the Fairfax, Virginia area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald and Minnie Flint Payne.
Surviving: sisters, Wanda Winship and Linda Payne; brother, Tom Payne; nephew and niece, Matt and Jennifer Winship.
Service was held Monday, December 29, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Wayne Burch officiating. Burial was in the Payne Family Cemetery, Winfield.
Sheila M. Williamson, 75, of Poca died December 26, 2003, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
Sheila was a member of Poca Homemakers, Samaritan League, Heritage Day Committee, Putnam County Fair Board, Poca Library Committee, and the Upper Vandalia Historical Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Williamson.
Surviving: son, Robert Williamson and wife, Gayle of Nitro; sister, Patricia Dominguez of Hayesville, North Carolina; nieces, nephews, cousins, family and a host of friends.
Service was held Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home Chapel, Poca, with the Rev. Stephen J. White , the Rev. Jim Butcher and the Rev. Jonathan Nettles officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Norma H. Haid
Norma H. Haid, 81, of Scott Depot died December 26, 2003 in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Anna Hudson, and her son, John Christopher Haid.
She was a retired secretary from the Putnam County Board of Education and was also a former secretary for Scott-Teays Elementary School, Scott Depot, and Union Carbide, South Charleston. She was a volunteer at Thomas memorial Hospital, a United States Navy veteran of World War II and was involved in the PTA when her children were younger.
Surviving: husband, Kenneth A. Haid; son, Kenneth A. Haid Jr. of Moorefield; grandchildren, Tanner and Keegan Haid of Arthur, Whitney and Kendra Sublette of Moorefield.
Memorial mass was held Friday, January 2, 2004, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, St. Albans, with Father Patrick M. McDonough as celebrant. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Avon Leslie Jividen, 77, of Robertsburg, died Saturday, December 27, 2003, following a short illness.
He was retired from AVTEX Fibers with 27 years of service and was also employed by the Mountaineer Power Plant, New Haven. He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: wife, Donna Jividen of Robertsburg; sons, Rodger L. and Gary D., both of Buffalo; daughter, Brenda K. Hill of Buffalo; brother, Herman Jividen of Huntington; six grandchildren.
