Conrad C. Alford

Conrad Cline Alford, 55, of Culloden died Monday, January 12, 2004, in St. Mary's Hospital after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his father, Conrad Charlton Alford.

He was employed by Tri State Chrysler of Huntington and Oak Hill Crysler of Oak Hill. He was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane. He was a Mason, Scottish Rites, West Virginia Motor Sports Association Borad member, and member of the Mustang Club of West Virginia.

Surviving: wife, Connie; daughters, Marsha Alford of Scott Depot and Marlene Alford of Hurricane; mother, Ruth Alford of Hurricane; sister, Linda Kaye Carter of Endicott, New York.

Service was held Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at Allen Funeral Home Chapel, Hurricane. Entombment was in Valley View Memorial Park Mausolem, Hurricane.

Doris E. Gobel

Doris E. Gobel, 80, of Scott Depot died January 11, 2004.

She was in the first graduating class of Stonewall Jackson High School and attended Morris Harvey College.She volunteered with the Red Cross, Boy and Girl Scouts and involved in church activiesa. She was a lieutenant colonel in the Civil Air Patrol and taught swimming.s Sjhe loved arts and crafts and cooking and cared for her 101 year old mother.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Ross Arnols Taylor Jr.

Surviving: husband, Robert E. Gobel; mother, Doris E. Taylor; daughters, Terry E. Gillispie and her husband, Lowell, Kelly O. Baily and husband, Mike, and Tawney L. Gobel; sons, Robert E. Gobel Jr. and wife, Robin, and Craig J. Gobel and wife, Carolyn; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Service was for family only per her request. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arragements.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to Eddy Chapel, Route 2 box 55, Leon WV 25123.

Otis Addington

Otis Addington, 88, of Craigsville died January 14, 2004.

Surviving: wife, Irene Adams Addington; sons, Frank Addington of Winfield, John Addington of Scott Depot and Tom Addington of Winfield; daughter, Betty Stone of Winfield; stepson, Stephen Young of Redman, Oregon; brothers, Harlen Addington of Rossville, Georgia and Bill Addington of Tombstone, Arizona; sister, Lenora Smith of Boles, Arizona; seven grandchildren; one step-grandchild; six great-grandchildren; other family and friends.

Service was held Saturday, January 17, 2004, at Richwood Christian Church. Burial was in West Virginia Memorial Gardens, Calvin. Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, was in charge of arrangements.

Gary G. Gray

Gary G. Gray, 55, of Hurricane died of cancer on January 4, 2004, in St. Francis Hospital, Charleston.

He was a graduate of Nitro High School, Greenbrier military School, Morris Harvey College and Marshall University School of Graduate Studies. He retired from Kanawha County Schools, where he worked at Flinn Elementary and John Adams Jr. High as a teacher and coach. He was a West Virginia history teacher and honorary Golden Horseshoe recipient. He also enjoyed coaching football and hunting. He was an antique car collector and loved his Studebakers. He attended First Presbyterian Church of Nitro.

Surviving: wife, Sandra; son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Amber Gray of Hurricane; brother, Stan Gray; five nieces and nephews.

Service was held Sunday, January 18, 2004, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, Cross Lanes, with the Rev. Steve Fox officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

The family has requested memorial donations be made to John Adams Athletic Boosters.

Anna E. Sayre

Anna Elizabeth Sayre, 87, of Robertsburg died Sunday, January 18, 2004, in Teays Valley Nursing and Rehab following a long illness.

Anna was a homemaker, member of the Buffalo Baptist Church and well known for her cake baking and decorating, as well as owning a restaurant in the Buffalo area. She was also a member of the Buffalo Senior Citizens.

Surviving: husband, Gerald Sayre; daughters, Janie Campbell of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina and Carolyn Young of Pinch; son, John Scott Sayre of Gallipolis, Ohio; sister, Jackie Rhodes of Myrtle Beach; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Service was held Tuesday, January 20, 2004, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Wayne Burch officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park.

Harold A. Henson

Harold Andrew Henson, 83, of Hurricane died Saturday, January 17, 2004, at his residence.

He was retired from Union Carbide Corporation with 32 years of service. He was owner of Hurricane Auction for 40 years before retiring. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Mamie Hedrick Henson, and brothers, John and Mervin Henson.

Surviving: his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Mitchell Henson; daughter, Charlotte Henson of Hurricane; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Frank Elske of Eden, North Carolina; granddaughters and grandson-in-law, Amy and Jimmy Nance of Stoneville, North Carolina and Pamela Elske of Wilmington, North Carolina; great-granddaughter, Emily Nance of Stoneville; sisters, Betty Akers of Elyria, Ohio and Beatrice Epling of Milton.

Service was held Monday, January 19, 2004, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor Jason Black officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Mildred Berry Hill

Mildred Berry Hill, 89, of Barboursville died Saturday at home. Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, W.Va.; burial in Memory Gardens, Madison, W.Va.

Augustina Dawn Utt

Augustina Dawn Utt, 25, of Huntington, passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2004, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral service were conducted Monday, January 19 at Heck al Home, Milton, with Pastor Ron Branch officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born August 15, 1978, in Point Pleasant, WV, a daughter of Dan and Cathy Riggs of New Haven. She is also survived by her husband, James Utt; two brothers and one sister-in-law, David and Kristin Riggs of Thomasville, Ga., and D.J. Riggs of New Haven; one sister and brother-in-law, Claudine and Chadd Hussell of Ona; nephew, Gabriel Hussell; three stepchildren; eight stepgrandchildren and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church Mason, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Bernard and Wilma Riggs and her maternal grandparents, Delvin and Leta Harford.

Leroy Thompson

Leroy Thompson, 76, went to be with God Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Richard Black. Burial in Hatfield Cemetery. He was born June 14, 1927, in Cabell County, the son of the late Alfus Tary and Verna Lewis Thompson. His paternal grandparents were John Tyree and Emily Susan Hinchman Thompson. His maternal grandparents were John Wesley and Mary Griffin Stewart Lewis. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Marlene Ruley Thompson; a grandson Daniel Lee Hager II; a brother, Odell Thompson; a half-sister, Oleta Thompson Taylor and two half brothers Cline Lewis and Marco Thompson. Surviving are his children and their spouses, Donna and Steve Wood of Willow City, Texas , Sharon and Darrell Hager of Luling, La., Karen and Michael Wilmoth of Milton, David Thompson of Barboursville and adopted son, Joseph Lee Thompson of Tennessee; one sister, Gladys Faye Fields of Ona; grandchildren, Amy and Yann Wood, Todd Wilmoth and Lisa Ferris, Jessica, Kelly and Andrew Thompson and Jeff and Timmy Hager; and one great-grandchild, Abby Wilmoth. Leroy grew up and raised his family in Barboursville, W.Va., where he worked at the Barboursville C&O/CSX shop. From Milton, he died after a long stay in Wayne Continuous Care Center, Wayne, W.Va. He was formerly a deacon at Cyrus Creek Baptist Church and a member of Lewis Memorial Baptist Church.

Laymon Ohmo Templeton

Laymon Ohmo Templeton, 50, of Milton passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2004 in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 18, 2004 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Chelcie Gibson and Owen Jenkins officiating. Burial in Templeton Cemetery, Milton. He was born March 10, 1953, a son of the late John and Irene Flora Templeton. He is survived by his loving wife Beverly Smith Templeton; one son, Laymon Lee Templeton and his fiance, Jennifer Wood; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Sandra Davis and Lora and Lee Fisher; one brother, Lewis Templeton and his wife Marjorie, and a very special niece, Tammie Watts and her husband John; two very special great-nieces, Tamara Wheeler and Tabatha Watts; one very special great-nephew, Taran Watts.

Naomi L Hensley

Naomi L. Hensley, 83, of Huntington went to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 17, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Tim Jones. Entombment in Woodmere Memorial Park. She was born December 20, 1920, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Claude and Loreta Wentz LeGrand. In addition to her parents and her husband, N. Murrell Hensley, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn L. Hensley and one brother, Claude Donald LeGrand. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Donald Spurlock; son-in-law, Charles “Bud” Hensley; four grandchildren, Alan Saunders, Kimberly Tickett, Kelli Wilcoxen and her husband, Kerry, Kandi McAleese and her husband, Tol; two great grandchildren, Becca Tickett and Trey McAleese; special caregiver, Eddy Estep and her loving family.

George D. Thompson

George D. Thompson, 75, of Salt Rock, W.Va., died Jan. 11, 2004, in Mariner Health Care, Huntington, W.Va. He was born Jan. 30, 1928, at McConnell, W.Va., a son of the late Roscoe and Anna Mae Adkins Thompson. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Denver and Virgil Thompson. Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Lucy and Ernest Walls of Goodrich, Mich.; a brother Leonard Floyd Thompson of Salt Rock, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004 at McGhee-Handley Funeral Home, West Hamlin, W.Va., with Gail Lucas officiating. military graveside services were conducted by American Legion Post 111 at the Baylous Cemetery, Salt Rock, W.Va.

Conrad Cline Alford, 55, of Culloden, W.Va., passed away in the comfort of family and friends, Monday, January 12, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center after a short illness. He was preceded in death by his father, Conrad Charlton Alford. He was employed by Tri-State Chrysler of Huntington and Oak Hill Chrysler of Oak Hill; member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane; a Mason, Scottish Rite, West Virginia Motor Sports board member and a member of the Mustang Club of West Virginia. Ardith Lucille Baker

Ardith Lucille Baker, 78, of Salt Rock, W.Va., went to be with the Lord January 11, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. David Cardwell. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. She was born August 25, 1925, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Irvin and Luverna Lucas Ross. She was a member of Upper Smith Creek United Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Talmadge Oran “Fat” Baker; two brothers, Ishmael and Harry Ross; son-in-law David Jeffrey, and one great-granddaughter, Deanna Crawford. She is survived by one daughter, Janet Jeffrey; three sisters, Bernice Reeves of Alexandria, Ohio, Esther McKinley, Amesville, Ohio and Phyllis Dean of Athens, Ohio; two brothers, Thurman Ross of Milton and Hallie Ross of Ohio; two grandchildren, Phillip Jeffrey and his wife Misty, of Salt Rock, and Angle Crawford and her husband Terry, of Ona; four great-grandchildren, Brian and Jacob Crawford and Brooke and Bradley Jeffrey. The family would like to thank Hallie, Thurman, Dottie and Delores for their kindness and care during mom's illness.

Luther Martin Beckett

Luther Martin Beckett, 99, of Salt Rock, W.Va., passed away Sunday, January 11, 2004 at Cabell-Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 14, 2004, at the Wallace Funeral Home and. Chapel, Barboursville. Burial in Enon Cemetery. He was born May 28, 1904, in Logan County, a son of the late John and Augusta Browning-Beckett. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lona Lee Beckett, one grandson, Jimmy Beckett, one great-grandson, Jason Hightower, and two great-granddaughters, Whitney Beckett and Amanda Walters. He is survived by three daughters, Lenore Pratt of Branchland, Naomi Hightower of Salt Rock and Linda Lou Webb of Marysville, Ohio; two sons, Larry Beckett of Salt Rock and James Beckett of Shepherd, Texas ; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Donald Lee Presley

Donald Lee Presley, 64, of Liberty died Sunday, January 4, 2004, at his home following a sudden illness.

He was born July 6, 1939 in Liberty, a son of the late Leo and Vivian Halstead Presley. He worked for more than 20 years for Monk Brothers Construction Co., He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving: sister, Donnie Staats and her husband, Luther, of Charleston; brother, Otis Presley and his wife, Chalrlotte, of Allens Fork; nephews, Tony Presley, Craston Staats, Jimmy Staats and Glen Staats; niece Mandy Presley.

Service was held Wednesday, January 7, 2004, at Long & Fisher Funeral Home, Sissonville, with the Rev. Billy Casto officiating. Burial was in the Presley Cemetery, Froggs Creek.

Anna Mae Staats

Anna Mae Staats, 76, of Eleanor died January 4, 2004, in Putnam General Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Staats Sr.

Surviving: children, Eugene Staats Jr. of Florida, Carol Nelson of St. Albans and Patricia Cain of Eleanor; brothers, Drew Huddleston of huntington and Paul Huddleston of Virginia; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Service was held Wednesday, January 7, 2004, at Gatens Funeral Home Chapel, Poca, with the Rev. Jeff Arthur officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Paul S. Jackson

Paul S. Jackson, 87, of Midway died January 4, 2004, at home.

He is formerly of Hometown, a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, member of I.B.E.W., a former member of Eleanor Lions Club and the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, and former owner of Valley Store Service in Hometown.

Surviving: wife, Barbara Jackson; daughter, Mary Newman of Eleanor; sister, Bettie Lee Moran of Beckley; brother, James Russell Jackson of Mooreville, North Carolina; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Funeral mass was held Friday, January 9, 2004, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Dean Borgmeyer officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Refd House. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 710 W 168th Street, New York NY 10032, mark envelop “For Research.”
