Catherine E. Yurish

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Catherine E. "Cuttie" Yurish, 81, of Martinsburg, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at Heartland of Martinsburg.

Born March 12, 1917, in Altoona, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Paul J. and Anna Bittorie Yurish.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters.

She is survived by four sisters, Helen Vincent, Frances Smallwood, Theresa Wilt and Christine Yurish, all of Martinsburg; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Charles, Stephen, Paul, Joseph and Marvin Yurish; and two sisters, Anna Price and Dora Markle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The Rev. John V. DiBacco Jr. will be celebrant. Burial prayers will be in Rosedale cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg, where a vigil service will be held at 8 p.m.

The family will meet at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. on Monday before going to the church.

Charles S. Hough

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Charles Samuel Hough, 74, of Harpers Ferry, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 6, 1924, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lacy L. and Susie Mills Hough.

He was a Methodist.

He is survived by a sister, Dorothy M. Popkins Poston of Harpers Ferry.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Lacy and Delmar Henry Hough.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson, W.Va. The Rev. Lee Strickler will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town, W.Va.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Anne J. Kenzie

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Anne Jackson Kenzie, 84, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at City Hospital.

Born Jan. 17, 1914, in Winchester, Va., she was the daughter of the late Franklin R. and Mary Evelyn Smith Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard William Kenzie.

She was a supervisor at Martinsburg Paper Box Factory before retirement.

She was a member of Rosemont Grace Brethren Church.

She is survived by two nephews, Terrance D. Jackson and Kevin Jackson; a niece, Koni Jackson; a special friend, Theresa Holtsclaw; great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah E. Jackson and Theresa V. Jackson; and two brothers, Charles Barney Jackson and Franklin R. Jackson Jr.

Graveside services will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Rosedale cemetery. The Rev. Mason Cooper will officiate.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

George V. King Sr.

BOLIVAR, W.Va. - George Victor King Sr., 82, of Bolivar, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at Newton D. Baker Veterans Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born June 17, 1916, in Kimball, W.Va., he was the son of the late George and Ida Mills King of Reidsville, N.C. and Pulaski, Va.

He was a 1947 graduate of Storer College in Harpers Ferry, W.Va., earning a bachelor of arts degree in sociology. For many years, he also served as treasurer of Storer College National Alumni Association, whose scholarship funds support education at Shephard College and Virginia Union University.

He was a retired educator of 35 years, serving the Jefferson Country Board of Education. He also was a past recorder for the town of Bolivar, a founding planner and patron and 15-year vice president of the Bolivar-Harpers Ferry Public Library Board of Trustees. He also helped spearhead a successful initiative to restore Halltown Chapel and have it recognized as a West Virginia historical site and serving as chairman of the trustee board for many years.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving in the jungles of India and Burma in the 77th Engineer Light Pontoon Company, which directly supported the famed Ledo Road project under the overall command of Gen. Joseph Stillwell.

He was a deacon of Wainwright Baptist Church of Charles Town, W.Va., where he served for many years as church treasurer.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara R. Smith King, formerly of Craigsville, Va.; a son, retired Air Force Tech. Sgt. now educator, George V. King II of Lynchburg, Va.; a sister, Juanita Haynes of Queens, N.Y.; a brother, Dr. Andrew L. King of Washington, D.C.; a granddaughter; three nieces and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter Rhea King of Kimball, W.Va., Irving King of New York City and Charles E. King of Washington, D.C.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Wainwright Baptist Church, Charles Town, W.Va. The Rev. Walter Jackson will officiate.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson, W.Va.

Hugh P. Strother

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Hugh Payne Strother, 77, of Shepherdstown, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Aug. 23, 1921, in Leetown, W.Va., he was the son of the late William Lee and Mary Zue Ford Strother.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Idella Strother, in 1993.

He was formerly employed at St. Vincent's Hospital, New York City.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He was a member of Local 1199 Drug-Hospital-Health Care Employees Union, New York, N.Y.

He is survived by a daughter, Linda G. Williams of Shepherdstown; a sister, Mary Strother of Charles Town; a granddaughter, Amber Beth Williams; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Margaret Creamer, Rena Carey, Grace Johnson, Ida Jett and Harriet Walker.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. Charles Hunter will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Kenneth M. Anders

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Kenneth Miller "Kenny" Anders, 68, of Charles Town, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at his home.

Born Jan. 6, 1930, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Robert Butler and Mary Colston Henry Anders.

He attended Charles Town High School. He was the owner and operator for many years, of Home-Alter Construction Company in Charles Town. Prior, he was employed with W. Harley Miller Construction Company, Martinsburg, W.Va.

He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He was a member for 20 years of the Eastern Panhandle Officials Association; and very active with and coached Jefferson County Little League and Pony League for many years. He also was active with the Jefferson County Midget Football League. He umpired for many years in men's and women's softball leagues in Jefferson County. He was a member of Charles Town Lions Club; a former member and commander of Charles Town VFW Memorial Post 3522; had been a member of Jackson-Perks American Legion Post 71, Charles Town; and was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 948, Charles Town, where he helped coach the Moose football team.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Louise Ott Anders; a daughter, Teresa L. Greenfield of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three sons, Jeffrey T. Anders of Bunker Hill, W.Va., Kenneth Scott Anders of Charles Town and Timothy M. Anders of Chesterfield, Va.; three sisters, Lucy Winkler of Memphis, Tenn., Doris Myers of Harpers Ferry, W.Va. and Betty Wilson of Monrovia, Md.; three brothers, Randolph Anders of Rippon, W.Va., Buzzy Anders of Prineville, Ore. and Lacy Anders of Oak Harbour, Wash.; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Anders and Carroll Anders.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. Richard E. Neal will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
