MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mary Byrd Carper, 91, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.
Born Oct. 8, 1907, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late S. Fred and Samantha Kisner Weidman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Allen Carper.
She was a member of Winchester Avenue Christian Church.
She is survived by one brother, Lee H. Weidman of Martinsburg; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Cora Mason; and five brothers, Berkley, Harlan, Fred, Thomas and Lemuel Weidman.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Douglas J. Hollida will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.
John F. Shockey
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - John Frederick Shockey, 49, of Shepherdstown, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Feb. 14, 1949, in Atlanta, he was the son of Richard W. Shockey Sr. and Florence E. "Flo" Trammell Shockey of Charles Town, W.Va.
He was a 1967 graduate of Charles Town High School. He was a graduate of Potomac State College, Keyser, W.Va., where he played football; and a graduate of West Virginia University.
He was employed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Bluemont, Va. He previously was on the starting gate crew at Charles Town Races and tracks in Maryland and Delaware.
He was of the Protestant faith.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Linda Susan Cook Shockey; three stepsons, Robert C. Stone of Shepherdstown, Christopher C. Stone of Martinsburg and Scott C. Stone of Willow Grove, Pa.; one brother, Richard W. Shockey Jr. of Corpus Christi, Texas; maternal grandmother, Myrtice Hammond of Atlanta; four stepgrandchildren; and one nephew.
Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. Michael Lowrey will officiate. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Matilda M. Fargo
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Matilda M. Fargo, 97, of Charles Town, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at Integrated Health Services of West Virginia, Charles Town.
Born Sept. 7, 1901, in Raymon, Alberta, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary David.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph W. Fargo, in 1979.
She was a graduate of Raymon High School.
She retired from the accounting department of National Bank of Detroit. During World War II, she was an inspector at Ford Motor Co. plant, Dearborn, Mich. She was the first woman telegrapher with the Canadian and Pacific Railroad and the Wabash Railroad in Detroit.
She is survived by one son, Douglas C. Fargo of Tuscawilla Hills, Charles Town; and two grandsons, Douglas A. Fargo and Matthew Tarrant.
She was the last of a family of 18 siblings. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Marjorie A. Fargo; and one son, Robert W. Fargo.
Services will be held in Detroit at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Woodmer cemetery, Detroit.
There will be no visitation.

Harry W. George
HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Harry William George, 71, of Hedgesville, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998.
He was the son of the late Edward and Sarah Catherine George.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Ann George.
He worked as a mechanic for Berkeley Sanitation and Waste Management before retiring in 1989.
He is survived by one daughter, Peggy Ann Brewster of Hedgesville; four sons, William Gene George of Hedgesville, Kenneth Wayne George, Jerry Allen George and Thomas Alfred George, all of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two sisters, Luella Jordan of Marlowe, W.Va., and Mattie Starliper of Cherry Run, Berkeley County, W.Va.; four brothers, Luther George, Casper George, Easton George and Arthur George; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lester George, Evers George, William George and Carl George.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel, 2060 Rosedale Road, Martinsburg.
A private service and interment will be held for the family. Pastor Daniel Wright will officiate.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Juanita A. Cogle
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Juanita A. Cogle, 76, of Martinsburg, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.
Born July 27, 1922, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Hester Cave Mancus.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence "Weeb" Cogle.
She was a member of Second Baptist Church.
She was a member of Women of the Moose.
She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis M. Reid of Martinsburg; a son, Douglas A. Cogle at home; a brother, Vincent Mancus of Redondo Beach, Calif.; and a granddaughter.
Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. R. Shawn Edwards will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

Edward E. Lawson
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Edward E. Lawson, 61, of Martinsburg, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.
Born Aug. 25, 1937, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Arthur Harrison and Ruth Elizabeth Altman Lawson.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He was a retired supervisor at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Pilgrim Lawson; a daughter, Heather Lawson, at home; three sons, Carl Lawson of Utica, N.Y., Shawn Lawson of Hagerstown and Rick Lawson; a brother, Clarence Lawson; and a grandson.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Harry L. Burchell Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Culpeper National cemetery.
