INWOOD, W.Va. - Betty Lawson Curtis, 72, of Inwood, died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at her home.
Born March 3, 1927, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Herbert Dawes and Elizabeth Moore Lynch Lawson.
She was a graduate of Coolidge High School, Washington, D.C.
She had been a medical secretary at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington.
She was a member of American Kennel Club and the Belgian Sheepdog Association.
She is survived by her husband, William Curtis Jr.; a daughter, Linda Lee Curtis Bassoff of Eldersburg, Md.; a son, William "Bill" Curtis III of Washington; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
George L. Shoemaker
HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - George Lester "Buck" Shoemaker, 74, of Hedgesville, and formerly of Clear Spring, died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Aug. 9, 1924, in Sharpsburg, he was the son of the late George Roy Shoemaker and Lillian Anne Skelton Shoemaker.
He owned and operated G.L. Shoemaker Brick Works Co.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.
He was a member of Broadfording Bible Brethren Church.
He was a member of VFW Post 1936 in Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife, Linnie Catherine Ausherman Shoemaker of Hedgesville; two daughters, Doris L. Henson of Martinsburg and Judy M. Mullenix of Hagerstown; three sons, Roy L. Shoemaker of Central City, Ky., John S. Shoemaker of Waynesboro, Pa., and Steven E. Shoemaker of Clear Spring; a sister, Pauline V. Reid of Hagerstown; two brothers, Marvin F. Shoemaker of Gainesville, Fla., and Albert L. Shoemaker of Hagerstown; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Roger L. Shoemaker; two sisters, Margaret Gaynor and Hazel Duffy; and a grandson.
Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Revs. William Freed and Bill Wyand will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, with military honors conducted by Morris Frock and Joseph C. Herbert American Legion posts.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, which will open at 10 a.m.
Gilbert G. Youngblood
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Gilbert G. Youngblood, 75, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at City Hospital.
Born March 2, 1924, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., he was the son of the late Garland and Sarah Young Youngblood.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Louise Hoogland Youngblood.
He was a graduate of Berkeley Springs High School, West Virginia University and University of Maryland Dental School.
He was a retired dentist with 30 years of service in Martinsburg.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
He was a member of American Dental Association, BPOE 778, Berkeley Post 14 American Legion and Newton D. Baker Post 896 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by two daughters, Geri Youngblood of Durham, N.C., and Gail Evans of Hemet, Calif.; a son, Gary Youngblood of Norwalk, Conn.; a brother, James Youngblood of Springfield, Va.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John Frederick Youngblood.
Private graveside services will be held at Rosedale Cemetery. The Rev. James D. Riley Jr. will officiate.

John R. Conard
SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - John Robert Conard, 82, of Conard Homestead at Well Spring Farm, died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Feb. 21, 1917, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Charles Elbert and Edith Hendricks Conard Sr.
He was educated in public schools in Shepherdstown, W.Va.; and attended Shepherd College before transferring to West Virginia University. He earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry.
He was employed as a spectrographic engineer for the Electrometallurgy Co., later to become Union Carbide Corp.
He was a life member of St. James Lutheran Church of the Shepherdstown Parish in Uvilla, W.Va.
He was a charter member of Joseph McMurran Society; and he had been a member of the American Chemical Society for more than 50 years.
He created a trust that will fund education stipends for graduate students in the Department of Chemistry at West Virginia University.
In 1998, he was honored by having a laboratory named John Conard Laboratory for General Science located in the Byrd Science and Technology Center at Shepherd College.
He is survived by his longtime caregiver, Betty DeBerry; two sisters, Ruth M. Conard of Timonium, Md., and Reta C. Hiett of Hagerstown; a niece; two nephews; three great-nieces; and three great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred I. Conard and Mary Emma Conard; and three brothers, Lester Conard, Ralph Conard and Charles Conard.
Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church, Uvilla. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town.

INWOOD, W.Va. - Patricia K. Talbott, 50, of Inwood, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.
Born July 12, 1949, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Roy and Hermia Funk Hansrote.
She was a graduate of Martinsburg High School.
She was employed by the Internal Revenue Service.
She was a member of Chapter No. 738 Women of the Moose.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald A. Talbott Sr.; a daughter, Rhonda A. Ellis of Martinsburg; a son, Ronald A. Talbott Jr. of Martinsburg; a sister, JoAnn Keedy of Goose Creek, S.C.; four brothers, Roy C. Hansrote Jr., Stanley Hansrote and Reggie Hansrote, all of Martinsburg, and James Hansrote of Aurora, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at noon at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
