MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Ernest D. Carroll Sr., 69, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg.
Born Feb. 23, 1930, in Isabella, Tenn., he was the son of the late R.C. and Katherine Stiles.
He retired from Charles Town Races in Charles Town, W.Va.
He served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force.
He is survived by one son, Ernest D. Carroll Jr. of Frederick, Md.; one sister, Betty Harrison of West Friendship, Md.; one brother, James D. Carroll of Florida; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. William C. Crowe will officiate. Inurnment will be in Arlington National cemetery Thursday at 10 a.m.
Adam M. Prain
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Adam Martin "Scotty" Prain, 88, of Charles Town, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at Crofton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center in Crofton, Md.
Born April 26, 1911, in Aberdeen, Scotland, he was the son of the late David Stewart Prain and Margaret Moore Martin.
His wife, Gertrude Lynch "Tootie" Prain, died Oct. 21, 1989.
He worked as custodian of the Jockey's Room at Charles Town Races. A former jockey, he rode at racetracks on the East Coast. He was a racing official judge at Waterford Park Racetrack in Chester, W.Va.
He was of the Presbyterian faith.
He was a member of Charles Town Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 948 and Sleepy Hollow Golf and Country Club in Charles Town.
He is survived by one sister, Margaret Morrison of Toronto, Canada; and one nephew, John Prain of Canada.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Jesse Cates; and two brothers, David S. Prain and Jack Prain.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town. Chaplain Rick Mann will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery in Charles Town.
Friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mary M. Bartlett
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Mary Marie Bartlett, 77, of Charles Town, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 4, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Mazie Dunlap Fiddler.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Bartlett.
She was a member of Middleway Pentecostal Church.
She was a housekeeper.
She is survived by two sons, Gene Fiddler of Hagerstown and Kenneth Bartlett of Chambersburg, Pa.; a brother, Donald Fiddler of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and three grandsons.
She was preceded in death by a son, George Bartlett Jr.; a sister, Hilda Gano; five brothers, Norman Fiddler, Ralph Fiddler, Ray Fiddler, Bill Fiddler and Sam Fiddler; and a grandson.
Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home in Ranson, W.Va. The Rev. Helen E. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Manor cemetery in Fairplay, Md.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Caroline R. Zimmerman
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Caroline Rush Zimmerman, 91, of Morgantown, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at Madison Rehab and Nursing Center.
Born July 9, 1908, in Youngstown, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Rosalie Stahara.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Armour Rush, whom she married
in 1938; and her second husband, Glenn Zimmerman, whom she married
in 1973.
She worked in McKeesport
She is survived by one half-sister, Josephine Gomola of Mount Pleasant, Pa.; six nieces, Georgiana Friend, Rose Marie Hatcher, Cathlene Holmes, Karen Zuccari, Janet Mauch and Kay Hupeck; two nephews, James Gomola and John J. Porter; and two cousins.
Arrangements are by Price Funeral Home. Meyersdale, Pa. Burial will be in Addison cemetery, Addison, Pa., in the Rush family plot.
Chester L. Haines
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Chester Leo Haines, 84, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at his home.
Born June 28, 1915, in Garrett County, Md., he was the son of the late Isaac Hamilton and Ida Iser Haines.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Mae Iser Haines.
He worked in the construction business until his retirement.
He was a member of Hancock Church of God.
He is survived by four daughters, Betty Lou Strait of Needmore, Pa., Wanda M. Haines of Chincoteague, Va., Roxanna K. Carpenter and Melissa M. Younker, both of Berkeley Springs; five sons, Richard L. Haines of Augusta, W.Va., Donald R. Haines of Hancock, James W. Haines of Warfordsburg, Pa., Robert L. Haines of Hedgesville, and Jerry D. Haines of Mifflinburg, Pa.; 23 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Ruby May Fultz; four infant children; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Haines, five sisters, Bertha Lewis, Malissae Brown, Thelma Lehr, Bessie Steve and Agnes Haines.
Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Eugene Harne will officiate. Burial will be in Salem cemetery, Slanesville, W.Va.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 11 a.m.
Robert W. Stotler
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Robert Winton Stotler, 60, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.
Born July 16, 1939, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of Margaret Kelley Stotler and the late Winton George Stotler.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Hawkins Stotler, in 1979.
He was a 1957 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School. He was a graduate of Shepherd College.
He was employed as a procurement manager for Bechdel Construction on the Alaskan Pipeline. He was a substitute teacher at Berkeley Springs High School.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sisters, Carol Ann Grohs of Midland, Va., and Brenda Stotler Wood of Berkeley Springs; one niece, one nephew, four great-nieces; one great-nephew and a special friend, Tammy Liggett of Berkeley Springs.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Wayne Frum will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway cemetery, Berkeley Springs.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 10 a.m.
