SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Vera Lucille Branstool, 89, of Shepherdstown, and formerly of Utica, Ohio, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Dec. 5, 1909, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Myrtle Strode Hotchkiss.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis F. Branstool.
She was a member and past treasurer of Utica Presbyterian Church and of the choir. She was a member of Presbyterian Women's Association. She attended Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church.
She was a member of American Federation of Women's Clubs; Historical Society; and past Regional Council of Girl Scouts.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Sue Eldridge of Shepherdstown and Nancy Lou Branstool of Utica; two sisters, Dorothy Tanner of Mount Vernon and Maxine Stanley of Worthington, Ohio; one brother, Dwight Hotchkiss of Utica; and two grandsons.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Evelyn Torrens.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Randall Tremba will officiate.
Another service will be Saturday at noon at Utica Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dallas Dryburgh will officiate. Private burial will be in Southlawn cemetery, Utica.

Charles W. Smith
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Charles William Smith, 72, of Charles Town, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at his home.
Born May 10, 1927, in Harrisburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles C. and Mary Wagoner Smith.
He attended Harrisburg public schools.
He retired from Chantilly (Va.) Cross Quarry as a heavy equipment operator.
He was a member of Charles Town Baptist Church.
He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 948; and a volunteer firefighter at Martinsburg Fire Co. 5.
He is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Turns and Cindy Smith, both of Harrisburg; one son, Charles W. Smith Jr. of Harrisburg; one sister, Daisy Houseman of Harrisburg; two brothers, Howard Houseman of Aberdeen, Md., and Jack Houseman of Middletown, Pa.; three grandchildren; and his fiance, Betty A. Bush of Harrisburg.
A memorial service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson, W.Va. The Rev. Wyman Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.

Carlis R. Tate
BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - Carlis R. "Pete" Tate, 72, of Bunker Hill, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born July 24, 1927, in Surry County, N.C., he was the son of the late John and Inda Rigney Tate.
He retired as a plant superintendent at Tri County Asphalt.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Wright Tate; two sons, Terry V. Tate of Frederick, Md., and Carlis M. Tate of Wilmington, Del.; two sisters, Rosalee Holmes and Hazel Moser, both of Mount Airy, N.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, N.C. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
The family also will receive friends at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Burial will be in Rigney Family cemetery in Fancy Gap, Va.

Margaret G. Moore
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Margaret G. Moore, 83, of Shepherdstown, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999.
Born March 4, 1916, in Charlottesville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Bertie Cave Gardner.
Her husband, Leonard S. Moore, preceded her in death.
She was a member of New Street United Methodist Church in Shepherdstown.
She was a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary to Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire Department.
She is survived by one daughter, Janice L. Hockersmith of Shippensburg, Pa.; one son, Leonard S. Moore Jr. of Martinsburg; two sisters, Katherine Cook of Fairplay, and Mary Grove of Sharpsburg; and five grandchildren.
Services will be held Monday at noon at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. Wendy Shullenbarger will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Freda H. Grove, 76, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Born Sept. 6, 1923, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Walter T. and Nettie Logue Hess.
She was a member of the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II.
She was of the Protestant faith.
She is survived by her husband, Howard G. Grove; two sisters, Juanita M. Gregory and Deloris Scarlett, both of Martinsburg; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Walter B. Hess.

Elsie M. Heflebower
RIPPON, W.Va. - Elsie Mae Heflebower, 77, of Rippon, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Shenandoah Health Village Center in Charles Town, W.Va.
Born Nov. 16, 1921, in Clarksburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James and Marion McEwing Cummings.
She was preceded in death by her husband, H. Garland Heflebower Jr., in 1983.
She attended West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va.
She was executive director of the Jefferson County Chapter of the American Red Cross for more than 20 years.
She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Charles Town.
She was a member of Kabletown Homemakers Club in Kabletown, W.Va. She was active in the Jefferson County West Virginia 4-H Clubs; and she served as leader of Blue Ridge Live Wire 4-H Club for many years.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Ann Ott of Rippon; a son, James G. Heflebower of Charles Town; a half sister, Becky Higgins of Montgomery, Ala.; a grandson; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. James Chambly will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery in Charles Town.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
