MIDDLEWAY, W.Va. - Thomas F. White, 97, of Middleway, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Integrated Health Services of West Virginia in Charles Town, W.Va.
Born March 2, 1902, in Middleway, he was the son of the late William W. and Sarah Ella Swartz White.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna O. Zombro White, in 1970.
He retired from Dixie-Narco Company Inc. in Ranson, W.Va.
He was a member of Middleway United Methodist Church in Middleway.
He is survived by three daughters, Margaret K. Baker of Chambersburg, Pa., Betty White Poston of Middleway and Mary Ellen Castleman of Wadesville, Va.; four sons, William White and James White, both of Middleway, Robert White of Charles Town and Julian White of Houston; 24 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sons, Thomas White Jr., Charles Lee White and Richard B. White; two sisters, Millie Chamblin and Thelma Kearns; and three brothers, Gilmore "Jack" White, Leon White and Leonard White.
Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. The Rev. Charles Frum and the Rev. Patricia Drake will officiate. Burial will be in Middleway Masonic cemetery in Middleway.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Emanuel R. Shirley
BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - Emanuel Richard "Pappy" Shirley, 76, of Bunker Hill, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.
Born July 28, 1923, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ernest Randolph and Lula May Griffith Shirley.
He retired from Crown Cork and Seal in Winchester, Va., as a supervisor.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his wife, Julia Ann Shirley; two daughters, Patricia Horner and Pamela Gess, both of Bunker Hill; two sons, Ernest Richard Shirley and Dale Curtis Shirley, both of Bunker Hill; a stepdaughter, Tracy Ware of Bunker Hill; a stepson, Ricky Hess of Bunker Hill; and seven grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Rest cemetery in Rest, Va. with military services by members of Berkeley Post 14 American Legion, and Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW.
Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg, W.Va.
James E. Sims Jr.
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - James Edward Sims Jr., 55, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.
Born April 26, 1944, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late James Edward and Dorothy Mae Henson Sims Sr.
He was a self-employed carpenter.
He was a member of First Baptist Church.
He was a member of Eagles Series 4179.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Ann Snow Sims; two daughters, Michelle Dawn Sims Walker and Tonia Lynn Sims, both of Martinsburg; a son, Michael A. Sims of Martinsburg; three sisters, Mary Jane Gordon of Winchester, Barbara Jean Barnhart of Warfordsburg, Pa., and Ruth Whatmore of Martinsburg; three brothers, Charles Sims of Winchester, Va., Larry Sims of Inwood, W.Va., and Mike Curtis of Kearney, Neb.; a half brother, John Johnson of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; nieces; nephews; aunts; and uncles.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Sims.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Home, 2060 Rosedale cemetery Road in Martinsburg. The Rev. Marcus Caton will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Frances L. Price
BOLIVAR, W.Va. - Frances Lorraine Price, 70, of 307 Potomac Terrace, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at her home.
Born July 29, 1929, in Silver Grove, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Herbert Franklin Sr. and Grace Virginia Bussard Cogle.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lester W. Longerbeam.
She was a member of Church of the First Born in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.
She is survived by her second husband, W. O. Price; a daughter, Edith Kidwiler of West Ridge Hills, W.Va.; two sons, Leroy Longerbeam of Keedysville and Marshall Longerbeam of West Ridge Hills; three sisters, Gloria Grove, Gladys Gifft and Shirley Long, all of Silver Grove; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Cogle; five brothers, Frank Cogle, Russell Cogle, Luther Cogle, Ralph Cogle and Richard Cogle; and a granddaughter.
Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, 970 Washington St. in Harpers Ferry. The Rev. David A. Palmer will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Lutheran cemetery in Bolivar.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mary W. Eckerd
HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Mary Webster Rodrick Eckerd, 86, of Hedgesville, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at her home.
Born Sept. 12, 1913, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James E. and Bertha V. Rodrick.
She attended Trinity Episcopal Church in Martinsburg and Mount Zion Episcopal Church in Hedgesville.
She was a homemaker.
She helped set up the Naylor Memorial Library in Hedgesville.
She is survived by her husband, John Kermit Eckerd; one daughter, Mary Kate Moore of Martinsburg; two sons, James K. Eckerd of Tacoma, Wash., and Stephen T. Eckerd of Washington, D.C.; and one grandchild.
Private services will be held at Rosedale Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Children's Department of Berkeley County-Martinsburg Public Library.
Harry B. Gageby
ENGLE, W.Va. - Harry Brown Gageby, 79, of Engle, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.
Born March 31, 1920, in Engle, he was the son of the late William Edward and Nellie Brown Gageby.
He retired as a custodian from Jefferson High School in Shenandoah Junction, W.Va. He was formerly employed at USDA Fruit Research Farm in Bardane, W.Va., and Charles Town and Shenandoah Downs racetracks.
He was a member of Engle United Methodist Church in Engle, and was a trustee.
He was an honorary member of Jefferson High School Future Farmers of America, and West Virginia Retired School Employees.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret "Tootie" Walker Gageby; one daughter, Carole Ann D'Angelo of Engle; one grandson, Wade Hudson; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Engle and Virginia Bush; and six brothers, Charles W. Gageby, Howard M. Gageby, George W. Gageby, David A. Gageby, Samuel H. Gageby and James E. Gageby.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. The Rev. Douglas Fraim will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery in Charles Town.
Friends will be received at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.
