MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Nicholas Peter Katsanis, 78, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Born Jan. 28, 1921, in New York, N.Y., he was the son of the late Peter Nicholas and Dimitria Kostulas Karsanis.
He was of Greek Orthodox faith.
He was retired from Consolidated Freightways and had been employed as a truck driver with Ballentine Beer, Harris Motor Express and Time D.C. Freight.
He served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps. He received the Purple Heart.
He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 896 and American Legion Post 14 and 42. He was the past vice president of Teamsters Local Union 992. He was the past commander of Shenandoah Valley Chapter of the Marine Corps League.
He is survived by one daughter, Dimitria Athena Conner of Martinsburg; one stepdaughter, Katrina Lynnette Wine of Martinsburg; his former wife, Betty Jane Kneisly Koncer of Martinsburg; one brother, Gus Katsanis of Jersey City, N.J.; one sister, Athena Lombardo of Jersey City; two granddaughters; one grandson; nine step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; six step-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Linda Ann Keesecker.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel. Father Anastasios Kousoulas will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
James T. Johns
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - James Tommy Johns, 66, of Berkeley Springs and formerly of Dundalk, Md., died Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs.
Born Nov. 24, 1933, in Killarney, W.Va., he was the son of the late Thomas Newt and Goldie Blanche Manning Johns.
He worked during the 1950s and 1960s as a millwright with Bethlehem Steel at Sparrows Point, Md. He operated a 7-11 Convenience Store Franchise in Baltimore in the early 1970s. He retired as a millwright with General Motors in Baltimore during the mid-1980s.
He was a member of Edgemere Church of God in Baltimore County, Md., where he taught Sunday School.
He was a member of United Auto Workers Union Local 239 of Baltimore, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1483, Risinger-Stotler VFW Post 4019 of Berkeley Springs, Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60 of Berkeley Springs, AARP, and the National Rifle Association.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Ruth Marie Stevens Johns; a daughter, Linda Lester of Dundalk; two stepdaughters, Denise Cutair of Baltimore and Brenda VanGosen of Berkeley Springs; three sisters, Naomi Simkins of Maine, Loretta Weiss of Georgia and Delilah Evered of Baltimore; a brother, Gary Johns of Florida; three grandsons; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Johns.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St. in Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Hennis H. Fox will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway cemetery in Berkeley Springs.
The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where there will be a Moose Lodge memorial service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral home will be open Monday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the convenience of friends.
Naomi D. Shriver
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Naomi Dick Shriver, 90, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.
Born April 12, 1909, in Davis, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Peter and Maggie Clark Dick.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Gilbert Shriver.
She was a past employee of Interwoven Mill, where she worked as a looper.
She was a life member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, where she was a member of Willing Workers Sunday School Class 23.
She is survived by three sisters, Helen Bivens, Letha O'Rourke and Martha Price, all of Martinsburg; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Gilbert Shriver; two brothers, Roy Dick and Calvin Dick; and an infant sister and brother.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel, 2060 Rosedale cemetery Road in Martinsburg. The Rev. Arlene R. Carr will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contee M. Dorsey
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Contee Matthew "Weedie" Dorsey, 76, of 425 E. North St., died Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at Integrated Health Services of West Virginia in Charles Town.
Born July 23, 1923, in Rectortown, Va., he was the son of the late William Matthew and Elizabeth Grisby Dorsey.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Marie Hughes Dorsey, in 1990.
He was a horse trainer and groomer at Charles Town Race Track in Charles Town. Earlier, he had been a mutuel clerk at the racetrack.
He attended Mount Zion Baptist Church in Charles Town, where he served as the pianist. He also was a member of Austin Grove United Methodist Church in Rock Hill, Va.
He was a former member of Charles Town Division of Horsemens Benevolent Protective Association and West Virginia Union of Mutuel Clerks Local 553. He was a member of AARP and Masonic Star Lodge 1 of West Virginia F&AM.
He is survived by a daughter, Emma I. Dorsey of Bluemont, Va.; three stepchildren, Joyce Gibson and William Hughes, both of Hagerstown, and Alexander Lane of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; three brothers, Daniel Dorsey of Middleburg, Va., John Gaskins of Centreville, Va., and Russell Gaskins of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Matthew Hughes.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Martin Luther King Boulevard in Charles Town. The Rev. Abner Carey will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg, W.Va.
The family will receive friends Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the church.

Violet N. Whittington
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Violet Naomi Whittington, 99, of Charles Town, died Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at Integrated Health Services of West Virginia in Charles Town.
Born Jan. 30, 1900, in Ranson, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Annie Willingham Whittington.
She retired from Fairchild Industries in Hagerstown, having worked during World War II and the Korean War.
She was a member of Zion Episcopal Church in Charles Town.
She is survived by a sister, Pearl E. Shaffer of Charles Town, and 10 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Katherine Ahalt and Mable Collis, and two brothers, James Whittington and William Whittington.
Graveside services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Edge Hill cemetery in Charles Town. The Rev. Jack Weise will officiate.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd. in Charles Town.
